Dirt and Worms / Tierra y Gusanos

Glorvina

Hi! Here I am in my kitchen. I don´t like to go to a party empty-handed, so I´m preparing a desert for Michael´s Halloween Party.

¡Hola!

It´s called "Dirt and Worms". And it´s very easy to prepare. You only have to combine a few ingredients. Here´s a copy of my recipe. Maybe you´ll have to enlarge the images to see them better.

Remember, the flowerpot has to be new, never used yet. You don´t want to eat real dirt, do you?

As you can see, the recipe is very easy. The bad news is that Alpin the Changeling is going to Michael´s party. So I have to prepare five hundred flowerpots!

One last thing. If you´re going to cook, remember to clean up the kitchen afterwards. And recycle all the leftovers.

Nut Brittle / Nuegados

Señora Estrella

Good evening, I´m Estrella, Don Alonso Quijano´s housekeeper. Don Alonso doesn´t like to go to a party emptyhanded so he´s asked me to whip up something quick for All Saints´Eve. The trouble is I have to make enough of it for 500 people. Don Alonso says there won´t be 500 people at the party. Most of the food will be eaten up by one little boy with an appetite that puts Camacho´s guests to shame.

Camacho

I! I´m Camacho. You can hardly see me because I´m in the middle of my wedding banquet. But it doesn´t matter if you don´t see me because what really matters about me is that I´m fabulously rich. Let me tell you about my wedding banquet. I´m so rich I´ve employed more than fifty cooks. The number of cheeses I´ve bought for the occasion could serve to build a brick wall big as the one in China. I have six huge pots, big as wine vats, choke full of different kinds of meat. I cut down more than a good sized forest to use as firewood to cook my provisions with. I -

Señora Estrella

Hold it right there, Camacho! If a certain little boy hears about your wedding banquet he might crash your party and I have a feeling even you, rich as you are, will end up poorer than your rival Basilio.

Camacho

Eh?

Señora Estrella

I don´t believe everything people tell me, and I certainly know Don Alonso sometimes says and does strange things, but...something´s happened that´s made me believe every word he said to me this time.

The other night I was out trying to pick asparagus by the light of the moon. I didn´t see any asparagus. What I saw was...an elf? I said to myself, tomorrow is another day and the one-eyed woman will see the asparagus and not an elf, and I returned home and went to bed.

But yesterday I was out in broad daylight and I saw...an elf. I returned home and there was Don Alonso waiting for me impatiently. He told me his English teacher was giving a party and he was invited and...

If there´s anyone who knows what she is seeing, it´s me, the one-eyed woman. When I see an elf, what I see is an elf. So if Don Alonso says he wants me to cook for five hundred, for five hundred people it shall be.

Now, it´s clear I need something quick and easy and that will appeal to a little boy. I know! I´ll make nuegados - nut brittle! My friend Pepe gave me a recipe from a cookbook published by his sister who is a teacher and her pupils from Daimiel. Here it is!

Nut Brittle

Ingredients:
2 kg. of nuts.
1/2 kg. of honey
1 spoonful of sugar

Utensils: Frying pan, wooden spoon, dish or tray

Preparation: Break the nuts in pieces and toast them a little. Boil the honey during half an hour together with the spoonful of sugar. Add the toasted nuts to the mixture of sugar and honey, stir a little and transfer mixture to a plate. When the mixture cools, cut in pieces and eat.

Time employed: One hour

Difficulty: Easy

Season: Since today there are nuts all year round, you can make nuegados whenever you please.

Comments: In the olden days, nuegados were made in the summer to be eaten on Sundays, since they had few ingredients. They could also be made only with sugar, without honey, but the result wasn´t as good.

Don Quijote

We´ve got to start working, Estrella. There´s a lot to be done.

I´ll help you in the kitchen. It´s not beneath me. Everyone should do a little housework. It´s good for one´s health and reminds one that one is human and that little things matter.

I´ll start by cracking the nuts.

Glorvina, the Banshee / Glorvina, la Gritona

Michael

Hello, everybody! Here I am strolling through one of my favorite cemeteries with my friend Flaccus Intrepidus Nauta.

There are a lot of people I like buried here. I´ll tell you what. I´ll show you pictures of a couple of them, and if you can tell me who they are and what they did for me, I´ll get your teachers to give you some points.

Here they are.

Aqui están.

I´ll give you a clue. The man isn´t Abraham Lincoln. I like Lincoln too, but this is someone else.

Nauta

Give them an extra point if they can tell you the name of the cemetery. It has something to do with Halloween.

Glorvina

Hey, Mikey!

¡Hola, Migue!

Michael

Oh, noooo! Horrors! I think it´s the banshee who laid a spell on me. Nauta, whatever you do, don´t pick up her comb. Erh, is that you Glorvina? What are you doing here?

¡Oh, noooo! ¡Horror! Eh, ¿eres tu, Glorvina? ¿Qué haces aquí?

Glorvina

The same as you. And... I want to know why I´m not invited to your Halloween Party.

Is it that I´m the wicked fairy in this story? Do I have to do something mean to you and your guests because I´m not invited?

Why is it no one understands me? Sniff! I´m good at heart! Sniff! It´s because people think I´m depressing, isn´t it? I think I´ll start crying! Whaa-

¿Por qué no me comprende nadie? ¡Sniff! ¡Tengo buen corazón! ¡Sniff! ¡Uaaa-

Michael

No! Don´t do that! No, no wailing, please! You can come if you want to. I didn´t think you´d want to. Why, even I don´t want to come to my Halloween party. There will be all sorts of horrible people there and-

¡No!

Glorvina

Well... it so happens I want to go. And I want to know what you are going to tell Flaccus Nauta about me.

I heard you saying you´d tell him about banshees on Halloween. If you don´t mind, I´d rather tell him myself.

Sir, we haven´t been introduced. But don´t believe a single word people tell you about me. I´m much maligned.

Me calumnian mucho.

Some beings have the gift of knowing what will happen in the future. I´m one of them. When I know someone I like is in great danger and might die, I go and warn them. What could be more natural? Wouldn´t you?

That´s what we banshees do. Cry before someone we like dies. Not after. Before. When something can still be done to avoid this. The trouble is most people don´t believe us. They just get scared when they hear us. And they want us to go away and leave them alone.

No despues. Antes.

Nauta

I think I understand, miss. I know of a young lady who did something like that. Cassandra of Troy.

Glorvina

I know Cassandra. We named her an honorary banshee, poor thing.

Conozco a Cassandra. La nombramos banshee honoraria, pobrecita.

Cassandra

I! I´m Cassandra of Troy! Can I come to Michael´s party? I´m not as depressing as I used to be now that I´m dead. And I can foretell the party will be terrible, but not as bad as you are thinking it will, Michael.

¡Yo!

Michael

Really? That´s the best news I´ve heard all month! Of course you can come to my party!

Cassandra

Thank you! It´s the first time anybody is happy to hear me speak.

¡Gracias!

Michael

You´re very welcome, Cassandra. Glorvina, you are not here on business, are you? Because if you are, we´re leaving. I can´t take all your shouting. And you know what else? You can pick up your own combs.

No puedo soportar tus gritos. ¿Y sabes que más?Puedes recoger tus peines tu misma.

Glorvina

Oh, so we´re still sour about that, are we?

¿Así que seguimos enfadados por eso, eh?

I can´t help laying spells on people who pick up my comb. It´s a tradition. What would people think of me if I didn´t?

No puedo evitar hechizar a quienes recogen mis peines.

No, I´m not here on business. I´m happy to say that business is slow. People live much longer nowadays than they did in the past. So I have less to do, and I´ve had to find something else to cry about.

Michael

Now you have something else to wail about? What is it? Not being invited to my party? Well, you are. That´s one thing you needn´t cry about.

¿Ahora tienes otro motivo para gritar? ¿Cual es? ¿No estar invitada a mi fiesta? Pues lo estás. No necesitas llorar por eso.

Glorvina

I´m crying about the planet, Mikey. It´s dying. And I like this planet. So I´ve become an ecologist. We are still in time. Can I come and wail for it on your blog?

Estoy llorando por el planeta, Mikey. Se está muriendo. Y me gusta este planeta. Así que me he hecho ecologista. Todavía estamos a tiempo.

Michael

Well...if your voice will shatter glass-

Bueno...si tu voz va a romper cristales-

Glorvina

It´s about the planet, Mikey. And your favorite colour, I´m sure it must be green.

Michael

I guess I´ll have to allow that on my blog, then.

Glorvina

To thank you, I´ll give you something you can use at your Halloween party. It´s an address.

Go to "The Devil´s Tramping Ground.com" It´s s a site I found on the web where you can watch really spooky Halloween videos, including one about a banshee.

Ve a "The Devil´s Tramping Ground.com".

If you are easily scared, better not go.

I don´t like to be scared, but I like this video because like the poet Yeats, it calls banshees good at heart.

Michael

Woe is me! Woe is me!

¡Ay de mi! ¡Ay de mi!

Don Quijote

Michael, what´s the matter?

Michael, ¿que ocurre?

Michael

It´s almost Halloween, that´s what´s the matter. Halloween is the Celtic New Year´s Eve, and I have to see the old year out and the new year in. Every Halloween, I give a party. And I have to invite my family.

Don Quijote

Of course you do. It´s only natural. Are you out of funds? If it´s that, I can help you. We´ve just harvested the grapes and-

Claro que sí. Es lo natural. ¿Es que le faltan fondos? Si es eso, puedo ayudarle. Acabamos de vendimiar la uva y -

Michael

No, thank you very much , but it´s not that. Most members of my family are nice, but others... They´re frightening!

Don Quijote

Frightening?

¿Miedo?

Michael
I´m scared to death of them and what they might do. Every year I promise myself I´ll never give this party again. But I know that if I don´t, they´ll be really angry and it will be worse.

Don Quijote

Come, man! They can´t be that bad.

¡Venga, hombre! No pueden ser tan malos.

Michael

I´ll tell you what. I´ll invite you to my party. I know you don´t lack the courage to come. And that way you can see for yourself.

Don Quijote

I´ll be very pleased to go to your party. And I promise to help you any way I can.

Estaré encantado de ir a su fiesta.

Michael

Just so you will know what you are getting into, I´m going to show you my family album.

This is a picture of my brother Kevin. He is the Amadán, the jester of the Fairy Queen´s court.

Kevin looks like a dork, but he is really very clever. And mean and sneaky. Some of his jokes go too far.

Every year, in June, Kevin goes on a holiday. He visits the human world. Any human who has the misfortune to bump into Kevin goes completely mad.

Look, these girls are my cousins Branna and Fiona. Branna´s name means "raven". She´s the one with the silky black hair. Fiona means "blonde and pretty."

Fiona significa "rubia" y "bonita".

Don Quijote

They are both very pretty indeed.

Michael

Yes, but unfortunately, they are also dearg dur.

Sí pero desgraciadamente también son dearg dur.

Don Quijote

Dear- what?

Dear- ¿qué?

Michael

Irish vampires. In justice to them, I must say they never go where they aren´t invited.

Vampiras irlandesas.

Don Quijote

Well...at least there´s that.

Bueno...al menos tienen eso.

Michael

But...wouldn´t you invite them?

Pero... ¿No las invitaría usted?

This is their mother, my aunt Aislene. Her name means "vision" or "dream".

Esta es su madre, mi tía Aislene. Su nombre significa "visión" o "sueño".

And that´s just how she appears to her victims. They fall in love with her, she steals their hearts and leaves them and they die of a depression. In Ireland, people call her The Demon Bride.

Fortunately, she retired after World War I, when she married my Uncle Ernest. I´ll tell you about him later.

Don Quijote

I see the girls have someone to take after.

Michael

This is my cousin Alpin, poor thing. No one can stand him. He´s completely unbearable.

Este es mi primo Alpin, pobrecito. Nadie le puede soportar. Es completamente insufrible.

In the past, Alpin would have been a changeling. When fairies had unbearable children, they would find a mortal child who was good and healthy and beautiful and zap! They´d switch the babies.

The poor human family that got stuck with the dreadful fairy baby was completely ruined by this child. It would eat everything there was in the house and demand more. It would complain and scream day and night. Nobody could sleep or rest.

It was a completely unfair exchange, so today, most fairies just give their unbearable babies in adoption to ogres. They know how to deal with spoiled children.

This handsome fellow is another of my cousins, Darcy. Darcy is the Far Dorocha, the Dark Man.

He is the messenger of the Fairy Queen. When she wants to see a human, Darcy mounts his black stallion and rides off to fetch her or him.

The minute the mortal sees Darcy, he or she knows there is nothing to be done except to climb up behind Darcy and be carried off.

This picture is from last Halloween. In the picture, Darcy is waiting to take Alpin trick-or-treating. The poor people who were visited had to give them everything they had. Nobody can say no to Darcy.

But then, Darcy also has someone to take after.

This is the Dullahan. In this picture he is winning the 1001 Fairy Derby. His horse is laughing because he knows he doesn´t even have to make an effort.

People call him the Messenger of Death. I call him Uncle Ernest.

He rides a black horse that breathes fire or drives a sombre carriage, always carrying his head in his hand. When he stops in front of a human and speaks out his name, the poor mortal immediately drops dead.

He is dangerous even when he isn´t out to get you. If you see the Dullahan, you must turn your head quickly away and run like mad. If you don´t, he´ll throw a bucket of blood at your face and you might lose an eye.

Fortunately, when he isn´t working he is usually in a very good mood.

But this - this is the worst of all.

He may not look like much, but he is the black sheep of our family, Garth, the Púca.

He hates humans. He likes to hide in lonely places, near crossroads or bridges and wait for unwary travellers. When someone comes along he takes the shape of an animal - a wild horse or an angry cow or an aggressive bat mostly - and attacks them, for no reason at all.

There are other members of my family who aren´t so bad but who are also difficult to put up with. This young lady is my sister-in-law, Lira Ronan, wife of my brother Finbar who is a true saint.

Lira is a merrow. That´s ans Irish mermaid. Merrows wear special clothes. You can´t see it well in the picture, but her cap is made of red feathers. In the north, where the waters are colder, merrows also wear a sealskin coat.

Many sailors and fishermen want to marry merrows because they are very rich and own a lot of treasures from the sea. But merrows are dangerous. They can make you drown if they don´t like you.

The only way to catch them is to steal their cap or coat. They can´t swim well without them. You have to hide these clothes very well, because if they find them, they return to the sea. They even abandon their children if they have them.

Lira is very jealous and is always threatening my brother with a divorce, even if she was the one who insisted on marrying him.

And this is my Uncle Niall. His name means "cloud" but it should mean "fog".

People call him the Far Liath, The Grey Man, because he wears a huge grey cloak.

When he spreads it out, people can´t see a thing and they have all sorts of accidents. He says he isn´t bad, he was just born a natural disaster.

And this is Uncle Gerry, the Grogoch.

Y éste es Tío Gerry, el Grogoch.

He´s really very sociable. And he can be helpful too. He likes to help humans who live on farms and does a lot of chores for them. All he asks for in exchange is a bowl of cream.

The trouble is his personal hygiene leaves a lot to be desired. Who is going to want to sit next to him? Well...do you still want to come to my party?

¿Quién va a querer sentarse junto a él? Bueno...¿sigue queriendo asistir a mi fiesta?
