Sakura , Haiku and Haiga / Sakura, Haiku y Haiga

I got so stressed with the Minced Forest affair that I simply had to find a way to chill out a little.

I remembered Lady Murasaki and I had agreed to have tea together during Cherry Blossom time. Remember Lady Murasaki?

Now I´m in Japan sitting under the cherry trees and munching rice crackers with Lady Murasaki.

The thing to drink is sacred saki, but that´s a wine made from rice and it is highly alcoholic, so I prefer tea. Green tea, naturally.

We´re enjoying the tea ceremony and listening to "Sakura" on a koto.
If you don´t know what a koto is you can see one in the blog of Cala High´s music department, Ocarina 2007.

Ocarina 2007.

"Sakura" means "cherry blossoms". They are the national flower of Japan and "Sakura," a song about cherry blossoms, is the official hymn of Japan.

You can´t see us in the pictures because we´ve made ourselves invisible so no one will bother us.

Everything is so peaceful here right now that I think I will feel like new when I get back home.

Now we are going to read haiku. These are poems composed of up to 17 syllables. They are written in three lines. The second line must create a link between the first and third lines.
Ahora vamos a leer haiku. Haiku are about small details. They frequently capture a moment in time. They usually deal with something beautiful one has noticed. Often, there is a word in them that tells us in what season of the year the poem is happening.

The poet Basho is one of the most important writers of haiku. This is one of his poems:
old pond
a frog jumps
the sound of water
viejo estanque
una rana salta
el sonido del agua

Sometimes haiku are illustrated. They can be illustrated with simple traces, generally in black Chinese ink. But there are also very elaborate, coloured haiku illustrations. Illustrated haiku are called haiga.
These are some lovely haiga we found on the Internet.

Artemius / Artemio

Fiona

So now I am a thief.

Así que ahora soy una ladrona.

Michael

How could you go on your own to threaten the Goblin Men? That was rash and pointless. Creatures like that never listen to reason.

Don Quijote

Whoever steals from a thief should be sentenced to a hundred years of pardon.
They stole the forest elves houses. All you did was run off with a shoe.

Michael

Is that...the shoe you stole?

¿Es...ese el zapato que robasteis?

Fiona

Yes, it is.

Sí, lo es.

Michael

That shoe is mine.

¡Ese zapato es mío!

Don Quijote

Is it one of the shoes you are always looking for?

Michael

It is. It´s one of the pair I lost. Fiona, did they have the other?

Lo es. Es uno del par que perdí. Fiona, ¿tenian el otro?

Fiona

There was only one shoe like this one hanging from a cane that the goblin man carried. There were other shoes, but none like this one.

Michael

Thank heavens you took the shoe. Shoes made by leprechauns have certainn magic powers. You can´t imagine the trouble they could have caused if they´d had the pair. Now more than ever I need to find the pair of this one.

Fiona

Then going to Goblin Market wasn´t such a bad idea.

But not by yourselves! You should have told us ou were planning to go. As if we weren´t trying to put an end to the problem of Minced Woods.

Branna

Doing it Mungo Binky´s way will take forever. We need a quicker solution.

Haciéndolo como exige Mungo Binky no acabaréis nunca. Necesitamos una solución más rápida.

Michael

I knew there would be trouble here when I returned. I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I stayed with my friend Dan Bloom and his uncle, Malachi Bloom. Malachi is the major authority on the cabala. One of his friends, Mrs. June Moon, predicted my future casting seashells. I´m not superstitious and I don´t believe in those things but the truth is that she told me there would be a bunch of problems waiting to be solved when I returned to my blog.

And Malachi said that three Romans would solve the first of my problems for me.

Nauta

The truth is that I have been thinking about this affair and this brought to my mind a wood near a lake in which I once sailed. It was a huge boat, one of those pleasure boats for tourists.

Alpin

I want to ride on that boat!

¡Quiero montar en ese barco!

Nauta

That is Lake Nemi, also known as Diana´s Mirror. Diana is the goddess of the moon and of forests.

The thing about this wood is that it had a rather special guard. A fellow known as the King of the Woods. Well then, this man was originally a fugitive slave that had sought refuge in the woods. The authorities couldn´t bring him out so they made a deal with him. They decided that he could stay in there if he could defend the woods from anyone who wanted to harm it. At first, all went well because sensible people don´t harm forests, especially if they are consecrated to a goddess. And defended by a fiend.

Nauta
Things got a bit complicated when another fugitive slave entered the woods thinking of escaping from his master by stealing the job of  King of the Woods. He decided to challenge the King of the Woods to a duel. Mortal combat it would be. If the king lost, he would die and the second slave would be the new King of the Woods.

Michael

I have a feeling I´m not going to like this story.

Este cuento no me estás gustando nada.

Alpin

I think it´s cool.
Pues yo creo que mola.

Nauta

To draw out the king, he broke off a branch from a tree. The king was furious. He fought to defend his territory and won. So he continued being King of the Woods. The trouble was that after that fugitive slaves kept coming to the woods. One of them managed to beat the first King of the Woods, but he too died at the hands of another slave. The slaves killed each other and the winner was king only as long as he could defend the forest.

Michael

Tell me this has nothing to do with our forest.

Nauta
But it does. This story made me think of a certain young man I know who is looking for a job. This young man belonged to a pirate band that wreaked havoc on the Mediterranean Sea. I was sent to capture them and eventually I did. They sent the pirates to the circus to be killed by the gladiators but my young friend was saved because he turned out to be meaner than anyone else.
Yo fui enviado a capturarlos y conseguí hacerlo.

Michael

This is moving from bad to worse.
Esto va de mal a peor.

Alpin
Triple sweet.
Triple guay.

Nauta
The public managed to get him a pardon and he became a gladiator. I am only going to add that he died young and once he was dead he realized how absurd his life had been. ¿What if we hire this young man to defend our forest?

Michael

You want us to stick a murderer in Minced Forest? Well, why not? That´s probably the only thing there isn´t in there. It´s all we need.

Don Quijote
There are precedents of knights guarding forests. Sancho and I could patrol Minced Woods. We needn´t hire a Sicarian.

Michael
Eh...better not. We´re very busy preparing the invasion of England. It´s essential that we reserve ourselves for that.

Nauta

He hasn´t killed anyone since he died and that was about two thousand years ago.

Glorvina
Does that mean he is something like a reformed ex-convict?

Nauta
Very reformed. And he´s a Roman, like I am.
Muy reformado. Y es romano, como yo.

Michael

The second Roman. But hiring someone like that would be like payng a sicarian. Wouldn´t it be like taking justice into our own hands?

Alpin
Sicarian. What a sweet word! What does it mean?
Sicario. ¡Mola la palabra! ¿Qué quiere decir?

Michael
A sicarian is a criminal one pays to kill someone else. But why am I telling you this?

Glorvina
If he is reformed, he´s no longer a criminal. And he´s not going to kill anyone. We´re all more or less immortal here. That´s one advantage we have over live humans.

Fiona
It will be more like hiring a detective.

Branna
Or a security guard.
O a un guardia de seguridad.

Glorvina
A forest ranger. There´s nothing wrong about that. And I´m all for reinserting ex-convicts in society.

Nauta
Well, it would be more like inserting him in a forest. He´s a bit of a loner. He´s willing to to live in there all the time.

Michael

¿Where would we get the money to pay this person?

Nauta

I think we could ask Trimalchion for it.
Creo que podríamos pedírselo a Trimalquión.

Michael

The third Roman? Why would he give it to us? Do you think he cares about Minced Forest?

Sancho

What he cares about is being more splendid than anyone else. We´ll tell him that if he can´t do it, Camacho will.

Nauta
He needn´t fork out a lot. In truth, I think my man would do it for free, but I want to be able to offer him something even if he decides not to accept it.

Glorvina
We have to pay him. If not, the syndicate of forestkeepers will jump at our throats. They´re on the warpath lately. They have grown very irritable and they jump at the least provocation since Mungo Binky forces them to stay cooped up in offices doing all sorts of paperwork. Who becomes a forest ranger to do paperwork? Puck himself told me this. By the way, he himself is on strike.

Puck
Yes! I am! What´s the matter?
¡Sí! ¡Lo estoy! ¡Qué pasa?

Michael
Because of Mungo Binky?
¿Por culpa de Mungo Binky?

Puck
No. Because of Oberon. You can´t imagine the things I´ve done for him. If there ever was a model employee, that was me. The times I´ve circled the globe in a twinkling just to run an errand that was nothing but one of his whimsies. And now it happens that I´m not good enough to be his chauffeur.

No. De Oberon.
¿Do you know what he´s had the cheek to ask me to do now? Oberon wants me to fool Darcy into leaving Titania and coming to work for him. He wants me to replace myself with that puppy.

Mungo Binky

You can´t go on strike just because you want to. And you can´t do it without agreeing to certain conditions. Minimum services are a must. You have to fill in this form asking for permission-

Puck

Look what I´m going to do with your form.

Alpin

Bring it on!

¡Pelea!

Puck

You´re lucky there´s a minor present, Binky.

Glorvina

Nauta, what is the name of the future lord of the forest?

The Lord of the Forest

Artemius.

Artemio.

Mungo Binky

Excuse me. Do you have a work permit?

Perdona. ¿Tienes permiso de trabajo?
