What do the Olympics have to do with democracy and human rights? Nauta will speak first. He will tell you about their origins.

¿Qué tienen que ver las Olimpiadas con la democracia y los derechos humanos? Nauta hablárá primero. Os va a contar sus orígenes.

I will do it as simply as possible. Ancient Greece was divided into different states. They didn´t always see things eye to eye. In fact they often fought. But for a time they decided to come together every four years to hold a special festival. During this festival, athletes from the different states competed peacefully, playing games. The idea behind this was to see which state had the strongest men.

Lo haré de la forma más sencilla posible. La Antigua Grecia estaba dividida en distintos estados. No siempre se entendían entre ellos. En realidad se peleaban con frecuencia, Pero durante un tiempo decidieron reunirse cada cuatro años para celebrar un festival especial. Durante este festival, atletas de los distintos estados griegos competían pacíficamente, jugando. La idea detrás de esto consistía en ver cuál era el estado que tenía los hombres más fuertes.

During a war, these men would be soldiers. And it was easy to think that the men who could win the games might also win a war. Because of this, the state that had the best athletes was feared and respected by the others. And people thought twice before starting a war with these state. When they could, they just let this state be boss.

Durante una guerra, estos hombres serían soldados y era fácil pensar que los hombres que podían ganar los juegos también podían ganar una guerra. Por esto, el estado que tenía los mejores atletas era temido y respetado por los otros y la gente se lo pensaba dos veces antes de empezar una guerra contra ese estado. Siempre que podían, dejaban que ese estado mandase.

It was better than having a war, where many people, soldiers and civilians, would be killed and where armies would destroy everything that got in their way.

Era mejor que meterse en una guerra en la que moriría mucha gente, soldados y civiles, y en la que los ejércitos destruirían todo lo que se les pusiera por medio.

Some people began to think, hey, the Greeks are smart! This is a good way to settle who is going to be boss. It´s better than going to war over small issues and losing everything we have if we don´t win.

Algunas personas empezaron a pensar ¡eh, que listos son los griegos! Esta es una buena forma de decidir quién va a ser jefe. Es mejor que meterse en una guerra por asuntos de poca transcendencia y perder todo lo que tenemos si no ganamos.

There was another thing the Greeks did. Although Greek men oppressed women and had a lot of slaves, they didn´t like to be bossed by other men. So they would gather together in an assembly and discuss important issues. And so that all of them could feel they counted, they would make decisions by voting.

Había otra cosa que hacían los Griegos. Aunque los Griegos oprimían a las mujeres y tenían un montón de esclavos, no les gustaba que les mandasen otros hombres. Así que se reunían en asamblea y discutían los asuntos importantes. Y para que todos pensasen que contaban, tomaban decisiones votando.

Many people believe that this was the beginning of democracy. That´s why Greece is called the Cradle of Democracy.

Mucha gente cree que éste fue el principio de la democracia. Por eso hay quien llama a Grecia la Cuna de la Democracia.

The absolute rulers of other states wanted to dominate the Greeks and make them part of their empires. The Persian king Darius I, was one of them. He was able to control most of Greece, but when his armies fought with the Athenians in a place called Marathon, the Persians lost even though they were very superior in number. This battle is considered one of the triumphs of democracy. And it is important for Europe because if the Greeks hadn´t won, the rest of Europe might have been conquered by the Persians and their absolute rulers.

Los gobernantes absolutistas de otros estados querían dominar a los griegos y convertirles en parte de su imperio. El rey de los persas, Darío I, fue uno de estos. Pudo controlar la mayor parte de Grecia, pero cuando sus ejercitos se enfrentaron a los atenienses en un lugar llamado Maratón, los persas perdieron aunque eran mucho mas numerosos. Esta batalla se considera uno de los triunfos de la democracia. Y es importante para Europa porque si los griegos no hubiesen ganado, el resto de Europa podría haber sido conquistada por los persas y sus gobernantes absolutos.

The Greeks eventually lost their independence. They became part of the Roman Empire. And by the 19th century, they were part of the Ottoman Empire. Your turn, Byron.

Los griegos eventualmente perdieron su independencia. Se convirtieron en parte del imperio romano. Y en el siglo XIX, Grecia era parte del imperio otomano. Tu turno, Byron.

When I was twenty one years old, I was poor though I had inherited a title. And I certainly wasn`t famous. But I was full of energy and I wanted to live life to the hilt. I decided to use what money I had to travel and see what I could learn about the world. I visited several European countries, including Spain. And I wrote about my travels in a very long poem called "Childe Harold," which was published when I returned to England. It became a bestseller overnight. One morning, I woke up and I was famous.

Cuando yo cumplí los veintiún años. era pobre, aunque había heredado un título nobiliario. Y no era en absoluto famoso. Quería vivir la vida a tope. Decidí emplear el dinero que tenía en viajar y ver que podía aprender del mundo. Visité varios países europeos, incluida España, y escribí sobre mis viajes en un poema muy largo titulado Childe Harold, que fue publicado cuando volví a Inglaterra. De la noche a la mañana, se convirtío en un bestseller. Una mañana me desperté, y era famoso.

One of the places I wrote about in this book was Greece. I wrote how I had visited Marathon, where the battle for Greek independence had taken place. And how sitting there for a while I dreamt that Greece could do it again. Greece could fight for independence one more time and maybe win again.

Uno de los lugares sobre los que escribí en este libro era Grecia. Escribí sobre como había visitado Maratón, donde la batalla por la independencia griega había tenido lugar. Y como sentado ahí durante un rato, soñé que Grecia podía volver a hacerlo. Podía luchar una vez más por su independencia y tal vez podía volver a ganar.

This made me popular with a lot of people who thought like I did. Some years later, I went with the representatives of the movement for Greek independence to fight the battle we had been dreaming of. A fever killed me before the battle was won. But now the Greeks are independent and they consider me a hero. If I had lived, I might have been crowned king of Greece, although I was British.

Esto me hizó popular con un montón de gente que pensaba como yo. Años después, me fuí con representantes del movimiento para la independencia de Grecia a luchar en la batalla con la que habíamos estado soñando. Una fiebre me mató antes de que se ganase la batalla, pero ahora Grecia es independiente y me consideran un héroe. De haber vivido, es posible que me hubiesen coronado rey de Grecia, aunque era británico.

That´s another thing I did. I urged people to interfere in what they probably thought was no business of theirs.

Esa es otra cosa que hice. Animé a la gente a que se metiese en lo que probablemente pensaban que no era asunto suyo.

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Artemis and Endymion / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Artemisa y Endimión

Artemis is goddess of the moon. We Romans call her Diana. She is also called Selene. She is very independent and athletic. A past mistress with her bow and arrow, she and her best friends, the forest nymphs, protect the flora and fauna of forests from evil hunters, abusive woodsmen and others who are a threat to their existence. We showed you a sculpture of Artemis and her sacred grove at Nemi in the 28-March-08 post and you can see her most famous temple in the 23-June-08 post.


Artemisa es diosa de la luna. Los romanos la llamamos Diana y también Selene. Es muy independiente y atlética, maestra con el arco y las flechas. Con sus mejores amigas, las ninfas de los bosques, protege los bosques de cazadores malvados, leñadores abusivos y otros que constituyen una amenaza para los mismos. Os enseñamos una escultura de Artemis y su bosque sagrado en la entrada de 28-marzo-2008 y podeis ver su templo en la entrada de 23-junio-08.




Artemis has a pet hind. It is white and it has golden horns and silver hoofs. Her tree is the cypress that points at the sky. Her favourite flowers are white, like the moon. She likes white poppies, that can make people sleepy and jasmine that perfumes gardens at night and waterlilies, that float in ponds like the moon´s reflection.

Artemis tiene una cierva por mascota. Es blanca y tiene cuernos dorados y pezuñas de plata.El árbol favorito de Artemis es el ciprés, que apunta al cielo. Sus flores favoritas son blancas, como la luna. La gustan las amapolas blancas, que pueden dar sueño, los jazmines que perfuman los jardines de noche y los nenúfares que flotan en estanques como el reflejo de la luna.

The fellow who is asleep on a crescent moon at the bottom of the drawing is Endymion. Endymion is very popular with poets because he is a poet himself. He spends most of his time asleep, dreaming beautiful dreams. Endymion and Selene fell in love and had fifty daughters called the Menai. These daughters are the fifty Greek months that have to pass from one set of Olympic Games until the next. You know how the Olympic Games are held every four years. Well, in Ancient Greece, it was every fifty months.

El joven que está colgado de la luna es Endimión. Es muy popular entre los poetas porque el también es poeta. Se pasa la mayor parte del tiempo dormido soñando sueños bellísimos. Selene y Endimión se enamoraron y tuvieron cincuenta hijas, las Menai. Estas niñas son los cincuenta meses del calendario griego que tenían que transcurrir entre unas Olimpiadas y las siguientes. Sabéis como las Olimpiadas se celebran cada cuatro años. Pues en la Antigua Grecia, era cada cincuenta meses.
