Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Hades and Persephone / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Hades y Perséfone

Nauta

Why do the leaves fall towards the end of the year? Why do so many beautiful flowers have to die? The Ancient Greeks asked themselves these questions. And to answer them, they created one of their best known myths, the tale of Hades and Persephone.

In May I told you about Demeter, the goddess of fertility, who made cereals grow so that people could eat. Well, Demeter had a lovely, young daughter named Persephone, who loved to play with her friends in the fields while her mother was at work.

One day, she was happily gathering blossoms her mother had grown especially for her to enjoy. She did not know it, but there was someone spying on her. It was the dark lord of the underworld, Hades.

He was very powerful because he was the brother of Zeus, king of the gods. When Zeus dethroned his father Cronus, he and his brothers split the old god´s kingdom in three. Zeus became king of heaven, Poseidon - I´ll tell you about him another time - became lord of the sea and Hades went underground to be king of the underworld.

It was not a bad deal for Hades because he became very rich, since all the gold and silver and diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and all precious metals and stones were now his. But it was depressing to live down there in the dark. And even more so because everything that died went there too. Even the souls of humans that died went to the underworld, where all they did was sob and cry and miss their friends and family and wish they were alive.

Since one could hardly see a thing down there, nobody bothered to look good. Their hair was a mess, their nails grew long, they were all covered with dust and soil and everyone looked like something out of a horror film.

One day Hades decided to breathe some clean air and he rose to the surface of the earth. And when he saw the lovely Persephone with her white arms full of delicate flowers he just couldn´t resist. He decided to take her home with him, and that´s just what he did. He grabbed her and put her in his chariot drawn by fire-breathing black horses and sank down into his black realm.

Nobody dared to tell Demeter who had kidnapped her daughter. They were too scared of Hades. She wandered about the earth in a desperate search for her darling child and when she saw she couldn´t find her anywhere she went into such a decline that all the plants stopped growing and started to wilt and die. People began to die of hunger because there were no cereals and no fruits for them to eat.

The god of the sun, who sees everything that happens during the day, took pity on Demeter and the starving people. He did something very brave. He dared to tell Demeter where her daughter was. Demeter knew only Zeus could help her against Hades. So she went to see Zeus.

Zeus didn´t want to get into a fight with his brother but he had no choice because Demeter threatened to let all the vegetation die forever. He told Demeter that Persephone could return if she hadn´t eaten a single thing in the underworld. If she had eaten anything at all, she would have to stay there.

Of course, Zeus knew that Persephone had eaten something. It wasn´t much. It was only four tiny little pomegranate seeds. But it was enough for Hades to refuse to let her go. Demeter, however, would not give in. Either her daughter returned or she wouldn´t lift a finger to make plants grow.

Finally, they reached a compromise. Persephone would spend four months under the earth with Hades, one for each pomegranate seed that she had eaten. The other eight months she would be with her mother. So that´s why the seasons exist. Persephone has to spend the winter with Hades, who is now her husband, so when the summer ends her mother starts to get depressed and all the plants begin to die. But when the spring comes, Persephone returns to her mother who is so happy that she makes the most beautiful flowers bloom.

Our Rooms / Nuestras Habitaciones

Vanesa and Jesse of class 4A have described their rooms for you:

Vanesa´s Room
In my room there are two beds, because I have slept with my little sister for ten years. The room is painted yellow with a green line. I have a large closet where I keep all my clothes. I have pictures on the walls and a poster on the door of my room. I also have a desk that is where I do my work, study and have the computer. I also have a shelf with some very big photos and many books. Above the beds I have stuffed animals. From the window of my room I can see the backyard. I like my room.

Jesse´s Room
I share my room with my brother. In my room there are two beds and between them is the night table with two alarm clocks and a lamp. My bed has a cushion and a pillow and an eiderdown. The door of my room is made of wood, the walls are blue with some photos of ours.
The room also has shelves with my trophies and some books. I have a wardrobe where I have my clothes. My room doesn´t have a balcony, but it has a window with a view to the street. For me, my room is very pleasant.

Think up 6 questions to ask Jesse and Vanesa about their rooms.

Tell Off / Poner Verde

Keats

Luxviminda, have you seen Michael? I need to ask him when I get to publish my post.

Luxviminda, ¿has visto a Michael? Necesito preguntarle cúando podré publicar mi entrada.

Luxviminda

It´s October. He´s probably hiding from his family.

Es octubre. Probablemente se esté escondiendo de su familia.

Alpin

Spiridoola, I´m going to tell you off. You´re stingy. You could have given Mr. Binky the fuftie thoosan salmons he asked you for. But you didn´t. I´m not surprised many people believe Scots are tightfisted. It´s because of people like you. And you´re mean. You could have been nice to me. But you weren´t. You called me a minnow. That could have made me lose my self-esteem. And you didn´t let me eat MacMor. I bet that you wouldn´t let even Harry Potter have some salmon if he came to visit you.

Espiridula, voy a ponerte verde. Y eres mezquina. Pudiste haber sido amable conmigo. Pero no lo fuiste. Me llamaste pezqueñín.

Luxviminda

In the first place, I´m not Spiridoola. I´m Luxviminda. And you know what? I would let Harry Potter eat a bit of salmon. Circumstances made him much more mature than most lads. He lost his parents, his aunt and uncle and cousin mistreated him and he always knew which side he was on. But you - you are a spoiled brat who has everything except consideration for other people.

En primer lugar no soy Espiridula. Soy Luxviminda.

Oberon

Binky, I don´t want to hear a single word more about this educational project of yours. Everyone is annoyed about it. And they all come to me to tell me how annoyed they are. So now I´m annoyed too.

Binky

It´s a shame to hear you say that. I was going to ask you to be the first to enrol in a course about understanding humans. If you´re the leader you have to set a good example.

Oberon

I? Enrol in a course about understanding humans? I understand them perfectly well! I´ve lived with them since the beginning of time. They are greedy and always unsatisfied. What else is there to understand? Look here, Binky. You´re acting like a loon. You´ve got a sick obsession with education. If I hear the word "education" one more time I´m going to ask you to resign!

¿Yo?

Titania

Oberon, you look awful. It´s obvious you aren´t getting much sleep. Since I woke up this morning I haven´t had a minute of peace. All I hear is complains about Mango Blinky and his strange ideas about education. I don´t know what all this fuss is about. But I don´t want to be bothered with this. I don´t want to look as worn out as you do. For the sake of your health and everyone else´s get rid of Bingy this minute. Make him resign!

Oberon

If Binky has annoyed you, he´s done his job. Well done, Binky! I´m going to promote you!

¡Bien hecho, Binky! ¡Te voy a ascender!

Keats

Hasn´t anybody here seen Michael? No? I guess I´ll have to wait another while.

¿Nadie ha visto a Michael? ¿No? Supongo que tendré que esperar otro poco.
