Cures for the Common Cold / Remedios para un resfriado

Alpin

John Keats, Michael isn´t here with me. He´s on sick leave.

John Keats, Michael no está aquí conmigo. Está de baja por enfermedad.

As for you, Henbeddestyr Parry, you´re lazy and in all likelihood good for nothing. Your business will fold up before the Gregorian year is over and we´re but a few days from December already.

There are two clients standing here and if you´ve asked them what they want, why, I must be stone deaf. Now, don´´t waste any more time and tell us what we ought to buy to cure two bad colds.

Henbeddestyr

Three things are enemies of a cold: proper clothes, the right diet and short nails.

Alpin

You see? You´re a bad salesman. We can´t buy any of those things here. Show me a potion I would give you good money for. What´s that you´ve got there?

Henbeddestyr

That´s ginseng. You could try ginseng, which reduces upper respiratory infections, but it´s got side effects. It can increase hormones and it can affect your blood pressure and cause insomnia and worsen anxiety if you take it with tea or coffee. Personally, I don´t think it´s right for either of you.

I would recommend ginger for Mr. Keats, since he´s not sure he´s got a cold yet. A nice cup of hot ginger tea can stop a cold dead in its tracks.

Astragalus is good too. If you take a bowl of astragalus soup once a week during the cod months, it´s not likely you´ll catch a cold at all.

It also helps of you eat fermented cabbage, like sauerkraut or kimchi.

Of course, if you´re practically sure you´ve caught a cold, sucking on a zinc lozenge might make your cold last quite a lot less longer.

I´ve noticed you don´t have a cold, lad, but being exposed as you are to people with colds, if I were you I would take two or three drops of extract of echinacea to avoid contagion.

Alpin

I don´t have a cold nor will I have one because I take a lot of vitamin C. I have 300 oranges for breakfast every morning. It takes my mum and my sisters about an hour to make my daily orange juice. You see how my mum does love me? What´s in the little bottle?

Henbeddestyr
Essential oil of oregano. You put some water into a difuser and a few drops of the oil and light a candle underneath and this produces a mist that helps you breathe when you have a cold and may decrease its duration.

Eating garlic also helps. I can offer you the odourless kind if you´re not into the Mediterranean diet.

Alpin

I have loads of strings of garlic back home. My sisters use it to study Maths with. The only thing I see that I personally want from your shop os your dragon, but I have a list of stuff the people who sent me here want me to fetch for them.

Henbeddestyr

Why didn´t you give it to me before? Let me see. Hmm. Honey, propolis extract, echinacea root extract, organic apple cider and essential oil of eucalyptus. Yes. we have all that. What about you, Mr. Keats?

¿Por qué no me la has dado antes? Dejame ver.

What about you, Mr. Keats?

¿Y usted, Sr. Keats?

Keats

I just want some lemons, some honey and some tea. Make it ginger tea, please.

Yo sólo quiero unos limones, algo de miel y algo de té. Que sea té de jenjibre, por favor.

Take me to an asclepieion! I have a bad cough! Cough, cough! I can´t stop sneezing! Achoo! Aaaachoooooo! My head aches. My nose is running! I can´t stop shivering! And yet I´m sweating! I´m sure I have a fever! I may be dying! And, above all, I want to play with the doggies and the snakes.

¡Llevadme a un asclepeion! ¡Tengo una mala tos! Ejem! Eeeejeeeeeem!

Hygieia would tell you to wash your hands and put you on a diet. And Panacea would probably give you an awful tasting medicine. I think you´d better go somewhere else. Do us a favor. We´ll send you on an errand. Here´s a list of things we need. Go see...

What kind of a name is Henbeddestyr?

¿Qué clase de nombre es Henbeddestyr?

Henbeddestyr

It´s Welsh. It means "old pedestrian."

Es galés. Significa "viejo peatón."

Alpin

What kind of a mother would call her child "old pedestrian?"

Henbeddestyr

One who hates automobiles. She hoped I would never drive a car. And she was scared I might be run over by one and killed. She wished I would live to be an old pedestrian.

Alpin

Your mother is not only mean. She´s also nuts.

Tu madre no es sólo mala. También está majareta.

Henbeddestyr

I´ll be sure to let her know you think so. This rude boy has to be a changeling. Are you a changeling?

Alpin

You´ll find out when I start to order. I can tell you in advance I´m a valuable client, so don´t offend me. But let me tell you something. Good kids can´t tell wether their parents really love them or not. But I can, because my mother didn´t change me for a nicer kid.
I see you have a dragon. How come your dragon is green? I think it´s unpatriotic of you to be Welsh and not have a red dragon. I happen to need a dragon. Why don´t you get yourself a red dragon and let me take this one off your hands? Of course, I want to see it´s teeth first. I don´t want to be fooled into taking a second rate dragon. What´s it´s name?

Taffy

My name is Taffy. It means "beloved." And if you come any closer I´ll burn your head to cinders.

Alpin

Yow! He´s worse than a pitbull! You shouldn´t be allowed to have a pet like that. I´ll have to ask Mr. Binky if you have a license.

¡Ay!

Taffy

What people shouldn´t be allowed to have is children like you.

Keats

Good morning, everybody. Alpin, is Michael here with you? I need to ask him when I can publish a post. I also need to buy a few things. I think I might be about to catch the flu.

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Asclepius and his team / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Asclepio y su equipo

Nauta

Achoo! It´s November and it´s cold and everyone on this blog has caught a cold or the flu. So I think it might be useful if I introduce you to a family of healers.

¡Achis!

Asclepius is the god of medicine and healing and he works as a team with his children to keep people healthy. In the picture are two of his daughters, Hygieia and Panacea and his youngest son, Telesphorus.

Hygieia does all she can to prevent disease. She teaches people healthy habits like being clean and eating right. We would all do well to follow her advice. But should we fall ill, Panacea, goddess of pharmacy, might have the right medicine for us to take.

As for Telesphorus, he´s the god of convalescence. He reminds us to be careful while we are still recovering from illness so we won´t relapse. Telesphorus wears a kind of overcoat and his head is covered by a hood so he won´t catch cold a second time.

In the picture there is a cock. Asclepius and his children like these animals because they remind them of their father and grandfather respectively, Phoebus Apollo, who, as god of the sun, is greeted every morning by the crowing of cocks.

This family also likes snakes, because many of them produce substances that can be used as medicine even if they are poisonous if you don´t know how to apply them properly.

In Ancient Greece there were places called asclepieions that were part sanctuary part hospital. People who were ill went there to pray and to consult doctors and try to find a cure for their illnesses.

The sick sometimes came from very far away, so they had to sleep overnight at these sanctuaries, in huge communal dormitories. Tame snakes wandered about these dormitories and there might also be dogs trained to lick the wounds of patients, because doctors then believed this would help them heal sooner.

Asclepieions were not very expensive. In most one usually paid with an accessible donation because the doctors that worked there were supposed to cure anyone who was sick without distinction. The most famous of these doctors was Hippocrates, who invented an oath that described the ethical code of doctors back then. Today, in many countries doctors still have to take that oath. It is called the Hippocratic Oath. You can read the oath here:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/doctors/oath_classical.html

More of Sancho´s Notes / Mas Apuntes de Sancho

Sancho

I´m learning the ías.

Estoy aprendiendo los "ías".

If you don´t know what the ías are, they are would, could and should.
Por si no sabes lo que son los ías, pues son "would," "could" y "should".
You have to use would with another verb. But the verb doesn´t always have to be visible. You can say: "I would!" and nobody knows what you are talking about unless they know what the invisible verb is. In my case, the invisible verb is love. Like in "I would love to learn English without making an effort!"

I call would an ía because in Spanish you add ía to a verb to make it mean would. I know it sounds confusing, but it´s not, if you think about it. The two other ías are easier.

Could means podría sometimes. For example "I could eat an ostrich if I weren´t vegetarian." That´s Michael´s example, not mine. Other times could is the past tense of can. For example, "I couldn´t sleep last night because my wife was counting ostriches."

"Could" significa "podría," a veces.

And should is the easiest ía of all because it always means you ought to. The easiest to understand, I mean. It´s not always easy to do what you should, is it?

¿O no?

A legendary German lady that was a role model for Marilyn Monroe helps me remember these three words. She was so pretty people wondered why she didn´t use her looks to make money seducing rich men. In a song she explained why not:

"It´s not because I wouldn´t! It´s not because I shouldn´t! And you know it´s not because I couldn´t! It´s because I´m the laziest girl in town."
Can you tell me what´s the lady´s name?
¿Puedes decirme como se llama la señora?

Cole Porter

Didn´t I write that song? Today, all I can hear is the beat of tomtoms.
¿No escribí esa canción yo?
