Nauta´s Mini Mythology - The Hours / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Las Horas

Nauta

How time does go by! I can´t believe a whole year has passed since I first opened this section! If Janus hadn´t stopped by to close the old year and open the new one, I would hardly have noticed so much time had gone by. That´s why we Romans are famous for saying things like "Carpe Diem" or "Tempus Fugits."

And that´s what I want to tell you about today, time. Do you remember old Cronus, the Titan who devoured his children? Well, he is the god of time. Yes, that´s what he looks like, an old man with a long gray beard, famous for his melancholy air. You can see him sitting under a tree brooding in my Mini Mythology VIII. He can´t bully the gods any longer. Zeus put an end to that. But he is still important to poor mortals who age and die.

The Horai, or Hours of Day, have a more cheerful aspect. They fly by very quickly but they return the next day. They are twelve, and their names are:

Auge, or First Light / La Primera Luz.
Anatole, or Dawn / El Amanecer.
Mousika, or Morning Hour of Music / La Hora de la Música.
Gymnastica, Morning Hour of Gymnastics / La Hora de la Gimnasia.
Nymphe, Morning Hour of Bath / La Hora del Baño.
Messembria, Noon Lunch Hour / La Hora del Almuerzo, el Mediodía.
Sponde, Hour of Libations and Offerings / Hora de las libaciones y ofrendas.
Elete and Acte, the Afternoon Hours / Las horas de la tarde.
Hesperis, the Evening Hour / El Atardecer.
Dysis, Sunset / El Ocaso o la puesta del Sol.
Arktos, or Bear, the Last Light, the shy twelfth hour who is named after a constellation in the night sky / Osa, la Última Luz, que es muy tímida y lleva el nombre de una constelación del cielo nocturno.

Mini Quiz

3. What about the Months? Do you remember them? Who and how many are they?/¿Y los meses? ¿Los recuerdas? ¿Quiénes y cuántos eran? (Mini Mythology X)

B) Three new questions on what you´ve just read: / Tres nuevas preguntas sobre lo que acabas de leer:

4. How long is it since Nauta started to tell us about Greek Mythology on this blog?

Mr. Eddy I - Interview with the Goth / Entrevista con el Gótico

Michael

Yesterday afternoon I visited Glorvina in Greenland, where she is busy watching icebergs melt. She asked me how my pupils were doing. I said I wanted them to learn how to interview someone famous in English.

Me preguntó cómo iban mis alumnos.

She gave me a strange smile. When she does that, I know she´s up to something. And sure enough, the next day she told me my pupils were going to interview Mr. Eddy. She had made all the arrangements. That´s just like Glorvina. She makes arrangements without consulting you first.

Glorvina said it was Mr. Eddy´s bicentennial birthday. It would be a shame not to honour him on this blog. Now, Mr. Eddy is very popular among the banshees. He is also a personal friend of my father, since both enjoy a good drink in a colourful bar. Mr. Eddy is really friendly and always interesting. And he´s undeniably good at what he does. But...Mr. Eddy gives me the creeps.

Ah, you might not know who Mr. Eddy is. He is Edgar Allan Poe.
Ah.

Don Quijote

He´s after my time, isn´t he? I´ve heard he is a great writer, but I haven´t read any of his works.

Michael
It´s probably better so. You are prone to becoming emotionally involved with what you read.

Don Quijote

But it´s both rude and unprofessional not to do research on someone you are going to interview, isn´t it?

Sancho

I´m reading "The Fall of the House of Usher." My wife leafed through the book. She said I had better burn it before the Inquisition censors it.

Michael

Come to think of it, if you´ve lived during the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, surely you can survive an evening with Edgar Allan Poe.

Sancho

Here you are, Don Alonso. I suggest you start by reading "The Masque of the Red Death."
It´s about something we know well - plagues.

Tenga, Don Alonso.

Michael
How awful! I hope you can sleep tonight!
¡Qué espanto! Espero que podáis dormir esta noche.

Sancho
I? Like the dead!
¿Yo? ¡Como los muertos!

Ganymede

Somebody said I was needed on this blog. Who is thirsty? But where´s the party?

Nauta

We don´t need a caterer. We´re not having a party. We need a sign of the zodiac. We couldn´t agree which calendar to distinguish our months by this year. Glorvina wanted the Celtic tree calendar, but the Celtic year began in November. Fergus wanted the Republican Calendar. Michael voted for the Aztec calendar. And so on. We finally agreed to use the signs of the zodiac this year and you are one of them. It´s because it´s astronomy year and you have a bit to do with that.

Ganymede
Yes, I´m Aquarius. But you´ve got this wrong. The zodiac usually starts with Aries.
Sí, soy Acuario. Pero lo estaís haciendo mal. El zodiaco suele empezar por Aries.

Nauta

Never mind. We have to start somewhere, and you start to work as a member of the zodiac on 20 January. Just tell everyone here a bit about yourself.

No importa.

Ganymede

Ok. Well, my name is Ganymede and I´m cupbearer at Olympus. That means I´m a sort of bartender. I serve the drinks during the banquets of the gods. The drink they like best is called "nectar." I used to be mortal, but I was so goodlooking Zeus made me immortal. He changed himself into an eagle and carried me up to Olympus. I also work as part of the zodiac from 20 January to 18 February, give or take a day. That´s it, I guess. Ah, and I love to party but I hate fights, so I suppose that´s why the Age of Aquarius is supposed to be a peaceful period.
Vale.
If you want to hear a song about the Age of Aquarius and the hippies that is from a musical called "Hair" that was very popular in the sixties you can do it here:
And if you want to see what my constellation looks like, go here:

Prize question: / Pregunta con Premio:
Aquarius' motto is / El lema de Acuario es:
a) Enjoy today! You´ll be gone tomorrow. /¡A disfrutar que son dos días!
b) Cheers! / ¡Salud!
c) Parties should be peaceful fun! / ¡Tengamos la fiesta en paz!

Searching / Buscando

On the eve of the Epiphany I left one of my shoes on the windowsill for the Magi to put gifts in - or coal. It was the shoe I had lost and that my cousins Fiona and Branna had retrieved from the Goblin Men. I got to thinking where the other shoe might be, and how I had to find it so it wouldn´t fall into the wrong hands. So, on the afternoon of the sixth of January I went out to look in an almond tree field near the cottage of some friends of mine.

The moon was already in the sky.
La luna ya estaba en el cielo.

I walked past a lot of thistles.

I entered the almond tree field.
Entré en el almendral.

I looked everywhere about. I thought I saw something that might be it near a big thistle.

This is what I found.
Esto es lo que encontré.

It´s not mine. Is it yours? It was soon dark and there was only a slice of the moon and a single star.

I didn´t have my glowworm lamp with me. I made my way back home.
No llevaba mi lámpara de luciérnagas. Así que regresé a casa.

Good luck! / ¡Buena Suerte!

Fergus

You´re the lad who is sleeping in a mortal´s car in the middle of a big city. You have an allergy because you don´t want to live in Avalon, isn´t that it? Why don´t you? It can´t be because you are bored there. No one ever is. People only leave because they have important things to do in this world that we share with the mortals.

Thistle

He hasn´t said a word of this to anyone but me because he doesn´t want our mum to be worried, but the truth is he can´t sleep in Avalon because he has dreadful nightmares. They only go away when he sleeps in the car.

Fergus

Nightmares, is it? What are they about?

¿Pesadillas, eh? ¿Y de que van?

Arley

You know how the humans are ruining this world we share with them? I was born under a certain mulberry tree that a callous person cut down sooner than to have to share its beauty with others. When I had to move to Avalon to cure my allergy to pollen, I felt like I was being kicked out of my own real place. I started having nightmares about how humans would start ruining other places after they had finished with this one. Even Avalon. I have to live among them to know exactly what they are doing.

Fergus

I see. Now, what would the opposite of a dreadful nightmare be?

Don Quijote

The impossible dream.

El sueño imposible.

Fergus

Chorus, we´ll have to sing for this lad one of the dream songs. Don Quijote is right, Arley. Follow this fellow´s example. Have yourself a dream. The only way to stop having nightmares is to have beautiful dreams. You´ve got to see the bright side of life first and think that rainbows always come after storms. You´ve got to have a fixation with rainbows. Stare at them fixedly, until you´ve hypnotized yourself into believing all will go well eventually.

Keats

Zzzzzzz!

Byron

Stop that! Stop it immediately!

¡Para! ¡Para inmediatamente!

Keats

Wha- I – I´m sorry. Was I snoring? I was waiting here to see if I could publish my post tonight. I got a little tired of waiting and I dozed off.

¿Qué-? Yo- yo lo siento. ¿Estaba roncando?

Byron

What post? Not the one you were going to publish in August? Tell me that´s not it. It is! This is a scandal, Keats! Where is the irresponsible person who runs this blog?

Michael

I´m right here. And Keats can say whatever he likes anytime he wants to here. He should know that.

Clock inside Donald Telly

Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong!

Robert Burns

Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne?

Alpin

Lira, why haven´t you peeled me twelve thousand grapes?

Lira, ¿por qué no me has pelado doce mil uvas?

Byron

The New Year´s grapes have found you here! Keats, you´re pusillanimous!

¡Te han dado aquí las uvas! ¡Keats, eres un pusilánime!

Keats

Well, you´re here too, you know.

Bueno, tú también estás aquí, ¿o no?

I´m just shy of saying this, because I don´t want to sound superior or anything, I know I didn´t make myself, but I think people who can clearly see how beautiful this world could really be have no choice but to wait until other people can see it as clearly. That´s why we fall asleep so easily. We´re tired of waiting for the rest to catch up with us, but there´s is no other way. Of course, we can try to make people see, but we can´t bash their brains out if they don´t want to look, because what would they see then? It´s up to them – they have to want to use their eyes. There´s no other way.

Lira

Speaking of seeing, I see you´ve brought your husband with you, Spiridoola. I´m watching what mine is doing every second in this crystal pearl he gave me. It´s like a video conference, or something.

Spiridoola

Oh. Dinky.

Oh. Muy mono.

Alpin

Mr. Burns, yours is the first foot that stepped through our door at midnight. Will we be lucky all year because you´re a man and you´ve got dark hair and you´re carrying shortbread and you´re young? Are you young? Aren´t you a lot aulder than you look? How auld are you?

Robert Burns

Do you want a petticoat tail, laddie?

¿Quieres una galleta, chaval? Se llaman puntillas de enagua.

Alpin

I want 2009 petticoat tails!

¡Quiero 2009 puntillas de enagua!

Woof MacTecla

May I have one?

¿Puedo tomar una?
