Alpin goes to Avalon II / Alpin va a Avalon II

Barrinthus: By Barge to Avalon / Barinto: Por barca a Avalon

Michael

And here I am leading an expedition to the Blessed Isle when I should be surfing somewhere in the South Pacific.

Don Quijote

I can´t believe you are actually taking me on a field trip to visit the land where the great Arthur reposes. ¡How nice leprechauns are!

Michael

Only the land. We´re not visiting Arthur. We are not visiting anybody, or anything. We´re not visiting monuments, we´re not seeing the sights, we´re not speaking to anybody, we´re not eating anything. On our trip to Paradise we´re not going anywhere except to claim the children´s houses. No making acquaintances, no flirting with the natives, no eating apples or any other fruit or anything at all given by this land. Absolutely no drinking any dandelion wine or mead or hydromel, not even sparkling water. No chasing the deer – that´s absolutely forbidden! No feeding the unicorns, no dallying in the meadows or on the way to anywhere, no flattering the butterflies. No listening to birds sing – it might take centuries. No noise, no games-

Sólo la tierra. No vamos a ver a Arturo. No vamos a meter ruido, no vamos a juguetear …

Fiona

No fun.

No vamos a divertirnos.

Alpin

I don´t care. I´m here on business.

No me importa. Estoy en viaje de negocios.

Michael

You said it. And no-

Tú lo has dicho. Y nada de...

Barrinthus

And no pestering the ferryman! Or I´ll whack you on the ear with my oar and you´ll get knocked off the barge and fall into the Water of the Golden Waves and get torn apart by the sharks of the pearly teeth.

And your dismembered and chewed on limbs wll sink to the bottom of the salty sea and turn into shells and coral because it won´t be me or anyone on my vessel that will fish them out for your mothers to try and sew back together.

What in the name of psychopomps is that?

Fridge

I´m the little kid´s fridge. You can´t see me well because I can´t fit into the picture.

Barrinthus

You don´t say! I´ve never seen anything the size of you move on its own.

¡No me digas!

Michael

We installed like fifty pairs of leprechaun shoes beneath it. They can walk on their own when you ask them to nicely. Pretty please and all that. We have to be really careful when we ask them to get on the barge, because I have to return them to the shoemakers´ union as soon as I can. I have half the Republic of Leprechauns walking barefooted.

Barrinthus

What! Let me see if I get this right. You want to put five people and fifty pairs of leprechaun shoes on my barge or you want to put five people, fifty pairs of leprechaun shoes and that mammoth artifact that says it is a fridge on my barge?

Michael

Eh…heh, heh. It´s a magic barge, isn´t it? Best to be had? You see, I don´t want the kid to eat anything in Avalon or he might have to stay there twenty years. What am I saying twenty? Two hundred is more like it. We´re bringing our own food in case we have to picnic on the island.

¿He dicho veinte?

Barrinthus

You want to put unequaled extra luggage on the barge of the wrathful man with eyes like flaming spears who is always enraged about the loads he has to carry?

Michael

Eh, yes?

Eh, ¿sí?

Don Quijote

How about if we tie the icebox to the mast and let it follow us floating behind? This body of water is big enough for sea monsters to dwell in, isn´t it? We have to be careful where it falls when we launch it. I doubt we could move it if it gets stuck in the sand.

Michael

I thought I would rue the day I took my pupils on a field trip but I was wrong. This one is actually helpful. Attention, leprechaun shoes! I´m going to count to three and then shout “all aboard!” When I shout “all aboard,” every shoe for himself ! You all scramble onto the barge really quick, before the icebox crashes into the water. No one need fear to drown in the resulting tsunami. We´re none of us mortal. Just remember to float instead of sinking so we can fish you out if you´re washed astray.

This space is so you can draw your own picture of the fridge and the tsunami and everyone getting splashed.

Barrinthus

What a way to earn a living! I should have listened to those who wanted me to learn to read and write!

And I´m not even allowed to charge for rides, like the other ferrymen do. I would make a fortune on this one, with the unequaled excess luggage.

Alright, everybody! Getting there is half the fun, so I´m going to turn on the celestial music and start reciting the mystical, lyrical incantations that go with the ride while I fight against the legendary strong current, so shut up, will you? Stop squeaking, leprechaun shoes! And don´t even think of dancing a jig!

Next and only stop is Apple Island, blessed isle of the most fortunate, mirthful land of youth renewed and youth eternal, land where perfection is possible, chalice of universal love, heart of the universes, product of our mother´s spells!

Home of roaring furnaces and skilled blacksmiths! Land of able healers! Land of the resplendent lights where the rays of the sun converge and warm the elixir of life and heal anyone who doesn´t feel too well and is suggestible, which all of us here on this barge are proud to be.

Land of dreams and myths, floating legend, mirror of the stars, home of soul and spirit, asylum of retiree bards!

Don Quijote

Tears are flowing down my cheeks! Oh, how lovely!

Barrinthus

Land without thorns, land without toil, land of rolling green hills and flowery, perfumed pastures, of greenhouses choke full of forests of bejeweled trees that bear golden apples and ruddy pink peaches, of vines that give plump amethyst grapes, of shimmering berries that put rubies and blue beryl to shame!

Resting place of living waters that sigh and sing and play harps of silver and gold with their wavy fingers of foam!

Field of golden grains and kitchen with ovens where bread cooks and bakes itself before dawn breaks, birthplace of the pink salmons of knowledge and black and brown and white and pastel colored fleecy sheep!

Plain of joy, fiddler´s green, land of evensong, nest of larks and nightingales, lake where the enamoured swans embrace but never sing swansongs!

Land of hope and wishes come true, safe of the thirteen treasures and realm of the sisters nine, site of rainbow colored crystal cities of glass castles and free brick and granite stone houses!

We´ve arrived.

Hemos llegado.

Don Quijote

I´m going to kiss the ground.

Voy a besar la tierra.

Barrinthus

You have two minutes to get off. I´m way behind schedule. Remember to leave your swords and axes on board. We´ll return them later if this is a round trip.

Remember to knock thrice on the strong door. Do it hopping on your left foot , covering both your ears and breathing only through your mouth.

Michael

What? What nonsense is that? I´ve never had to do any of that to get in before.

Barrinthus

Ah, I was teasing. The strong door is right behind those yew trees today. All you need do is knock.

Michael

Time on this island is even slower than on our blog. Once we´ve knocked on the strong door, news from us might take a while to get to you....but...

to be continued!

¡continuará!

(Remember to do the drawing about the tsunami yourself.

Cousin Michael, can I see your Harry Potter-like scar?

Michael

What I have is a lump and the fervent wish to be surfing in the Pacific. Help me find the flyer with the bargeman´s schedule and let´s go claim those houses.

Kevin
So you are a bit upset because you got hit by a note while celebrating your blog´s birthday with the leaves that live on the branches of your treehouse. I´m so sorry about that! Do you have a significant scar on your head now, like Harry Potter? Incidentally, I´ve heard you are going to Apple Island. Do you have any idea why I´m not welcome there? Or anywhere else?
Incidentalmente, te he oido decir que te vas a Isla Manzana.

I want you to know that I did not throw that brick. If I had, it would have been to wish your blog a happy birthday! But I did not. I have been crouching here waiting for lonely passersby for the past two years.

Bricks / Ladrillos

Michael

We were two years old a couple of days ago, and on this remarkable occasion we would like to remind some of our dear readers that they don´t need to throw bricks wrapped in notes through the windows of my treehouse to tell us that this blog is audacious, incisive and a genuine breakthrough. Beneath every post there is written the word "comments," and by clicking on it
one can fill in a form telling us exactly what one thinks of us in a modern and progressive manner.

Leafy Vinny

We don´t throw bricks.

Nosotros no tiramos ladrillos.

Leafy Benny

We don´t write or read either. We just look at the pictures to see if you made us look good.

Leafy Melvin

Well, a few leafies do know how to read, but we try not to hold it against them. We´re civilized.

Somos civilizados.

Leo the Lion / Leo el León

Hello! It´s the last week of July and I´m Leo the Lion, here as the new sign of the zodiac. My story is similar to Cancer the Crab´s.

¡Hola!

I wasn´t an earthling. My mother was the lunar goddess Selene (mini mythology X). I was born in the moon where I lived quite happily...and peacefully. There is no record of my ever having attacked anyone up there.

But one day the queen of the gods, Hera, (mini mythology VIII) brought me down to earth with the sinister purpose of having me draw out her stepson Herakles, whom she hated.

Yes, that Herakles or Hercules, the superhumanly strong fellow who also killed the Hydra of Lake Lerna and squashed Cancer the Crab while he was about it.

Since Herakles was a hero and went about slaying monsters and beasts, Hera hoped I would have to eat him up to defend my life.

I wandered for a while about a place called Nemea for a while, where I had trouble with the natives, who were horribly hostile, before Herakles was told I was there and came after me. This is why I am sometimes called the Nemean Lion. But, I insist, I´m not Nemean. I´m a Lunatic.

He couldn´t hurt me with his bow because the arrows he shot at me only bounced off my hide.
The same thing happened when he tried to bash me to death with his club.

So what he did was strangle me. All I got to do to him before he ended my life was tear off one of his little fingers. So I suppose I wasn´t as tough as everyone wanted to think I was. I just had great fur.

Herakles realized this, and not content with murdering me, he skinned me and made himself a protective cloak out of my hide. That way arrows bounced off him too.

As was to be expected, my mother, the moon goddess, made a big fuss about all this business and Hera felt obliged to find me a place among the stars. So that´s why I have my own constellation. I also got my fur back. But I still have a trauma and low self-esteem.

There are many bright stars in my constellation. One of the brightest is Regulus, the lion´s heart. Together with others it forms the shape of a sickle that represents my head and mane.
You can see this very well in this drawing from:

http://stardate.org/

Denebola is another of my stars and it means “lion´s tail.”

When I am prominent in the sky, which is in the summer, the river Nile is brimming and the lions that lived by it used to fight the heat by gathering near its waters.

They also call me the star of Bacchus because this wine god is said to be my father and because I´m around watching how the grapes grow for the harvest coming in September.

Winged Book / Libro Alado

Michael

I searched for my Bulfinch´s Mythology book in my treehouse. It wasn´t there. This is what it looked like before it grew light blue wings and took to flying from one place to another.

No estaba allí.

If any of you know where it is, I´d appreciate your telling me.

You´re not going to believe this, but it took off straight for Apple Island. Maybe it´s waiting for you in your house there.
