Halloween Greetings

Mungo Binky

Holiday greetings, all!

¡Feliz fiesta a todos!

Leafies Malcolfo and Leopold

We warned you he was on the dark side.

Michael

Now what?

¿Y ahora qué?

Mungo Binky

This is just a costume. I thought I might dress up as an infernal bureaucrat for Halloween. It´s a joke on myself, of course, and meant to make me more popular.

Michael

You must definitely be kidding.

Debes de estar bromeando de verdad.

Leafies Malcolfo and Leopold

That is no costume. He´s finally showing his real face.

No es un disfraz. Por fin muestra su auténtico rostro.

Mungo Binky

I´ve had a brilliant idea aside from this one. I thought I might give a speech on Halloween reminding the fairy people of all I´ve done this year and explaining all I mean to do next year. Like the mortals do on TV.

Michael

We don´t have TV. A few of us have crystal balls, but I don´t think they are connected in some kind of a network.

No tenemos tele.

Mungo Binky

That´s why I want to ask you if I can make my speech on your blog.

Michael
I´ll tell you what. If you have nothing better to do, I´ll invite you to my Halloween Party. You can try to make your speech there. One more weird guest won´t make a difference, I guess. As for my blog readers, I´m not inviting you guys because I know for sure you don´t want to be at a party like this one. Me neither. So have a happy Halloween wherever you can have one!
Happy Halloween, You-All! / ¡Feliz Halloween a todos!

Sleeping over at Alpin´s/ Durmiendo en casa de Alpin

This is a draft. / Es borrador.

Alpin

Arley, my sisters said I should do something nice for someone so I thought I could ask you to come sleep over at my new palace and tell you all about my trip to the Blessed Isle. And now that I´ve done both, to be even nicer, I´m going to do you a third favor. I´m going to tell you that I too have nightmares. At least, I had one last night. I´m sure you want me to tell you all about it, so here goes.

I dreamt I saw a green book with blue wings and something like golden fruit on a corner of the cover. It was inside a cage of gold. It was trying to smile and not to look desperate because it didn´t want to frighten me. But it kept whining "Heeeeeeeelllppp meeeeee!" Or at least I thought it did. Do you like my nightmare, Arley? Is it better than yours?

Arley

I´m sure it´s a very good nightmare, Alpin. And it must have a meaning, because dreams all do. I´m really glad you invited me to sleep over at your posh palace. And I´m really happy you told me all about your trip to Apple Island because it has given me a great idea. If the answer to everything can be found in the Royal Library, maybe we can read something there that will explain our nightmares. There is a spot in my mum´s garden where it is still summer. There is a gate there by which you can pass into Honey Meadow. My daddy often crosses it to get to the cider mills, they´re close by. But you know what else is close by? The Royal Library. What if we get up at dawn...?

Heed the Leafies / Escuchad a los Leafies

Glorvina

In Autumn, lots of people visit forests and try to gather mushrooms. Listen to what the Leafies have to say about the four most dangerous mushrooms in Minced Forest.

Leafy Frankie (Curro Hojita)
No! Poison! Don´t even touch! Take a picture of it with your mobile phone camera and go do something else!

¡No! ¡Veneno!

Amanita muscari

Leafy Vinny (Vicentico Hojita)

Amanita muscari is the Latin name of the elf´s toadstool, also known as the fly killer or fly agaric because people put bits of these mushrooms in bowls of milk and used them to trap flies with. Don´t do that! You have no business killing flies or anything!

Don´t let mushroom hats deceive you. The older the mushroom is, the more they look like the broad-brimmed picture hats some ladies wear at weddings and less like the woolen caps you pull down to cover your ears with in winter.

As for the warts, or white spots, they were once part of a veil that covered the mushroom when it began to grow. The veil broke open, and the spots are what is left of it.

Amanita pantherina

Leafy Frankie

The one above is pure poison. It´s a good idea to beware of almost all mushrooms that have white warts on their hats. This one also has a ring round the stalk. If it´s got both, and looks like an amanita pantherina, it is an amanita pantherina.

Leafy Vinny

The one below is public enemy number one. Eat it and you´ll need a liver transplant. If you live long enough to get one. It looks like a champignon when it is young, so many people get confused...and poisoned.

Young Amanita phalloides

Leafy Frankie

It´s like we said. When it gets older, it´s hat spreads out, but it is just as deadly. Look, it has a basal cup, also called volva or sack.

Older Amanita phalloides

Leafy Vinny

Looks succulent, doesn´t it? Deeelicious! Bit like a pumpkin, so orange. And it smells good too. It´s got a friendly name, but don´t let that fool you. The Jack-o-lantern is a poisonous mushroom too. They also call it the olive mushroom because it often grows under olivetrees.

Parece suculenta, ¿a qué sí? ¡Deeeliciosa! Parece una calabaza, tan naranja. Y huele bien.

Omphalotus olearius

Ah! Some mushroom glow in the dark! The Jack-o-lantern had to be one of them. It has an enzyme that makes its gills glow.

¡Ah!

Leafy Frankie

We dwell around and sometimes in mushrooms, so we know a lot about them. We don´t believe in supermarkets, but if you are a mortal kid, our advice is: Pick your mushrooms in the supermarket!

If you like to visit forests, be respectful and try not to touch or take or break things. How would you like it if we invaded your home and touched and took and broke stuff?

Glorvina
Draw a mushroom and put the names of its diferent parts next to where they can be found in the drawing: / Dibuja una seta y pon los nombres de sus distintas partes cerca de donde se encuentren en el dibujo.

1. Pilcus, cap, sombrero.
2. Warts or remnants of the veil, verrugas, o restos del velo.
3. Lamellae, gills, láminas. They´ve got spores. Tienen esporas.
4. Stipe, stalk or stem, tronco.
5. Annulus, ring, anillo.
6. Volva, basal cup or sack, membrana o calza.
7. Mycelium, root, raíz.

When you are done, find the Latin names of these four perfectly edible mushrooms you can usually find in supermarkets.
