Happy birthday, Pippi / Feliz cumpleaños, Pippi.

Michael

You are 65 and aren´t thinking of retiring? I suppose the way things are right now the authorities would say you are a good example.

Pippilotta
Truth is I´ve never worked a day in my life. Just had fun.

Sólo me lo he pasado bien.

Michael

Way to go.

Así, sí.

If you feel too old for me, read me to your baby brother or sister this Christmas.

Si te sientes demasiado mayor para leerme, me puedes leer a tus hermanitos menores esta Navidad.

Breaking up / Rompiendo

Breaking up with your boyfriend/girlfriend vocabulary and phonetics. The sound ai, also known as the long i is what rhymes the most in this sixties song sung by teenage star of the moment Patty Duke.

Lyrics

Please don’t just stand there
Come and kiss me like before
Please don’t just stand there,
Looking down at the floor
If something is wrong, give me just one little sign
If there’s someone else, please tell me
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind

Once when we’d meet, you’d run to hold me tight
Life was so sweet until tonight
Please don’t just stand there
Get it over if we’re through
Please don’t just stand there
While my heart breaks in two

Knowing I care, how can you be so unkind?
Please stop hurting me and help me
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind

SPOKEN:

If it’s a game, I don’t want to play it;
And if it’s goodbye, why can’t you just say it?
Why make me cry like you do, how can you be so unkind?
Please start loving me or leave me
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind

(Don’t just stand there)

Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind
(Don’t just stand there)
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind
(repeat and fade out)

Poppies in November / Amapolas en noviembre

On November 11, many people in Commonwealth countries wear a poppy in memory of those who have sacrificed their lives for them during wars. Why on November 11? Because on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent, thus proclaiming the beginning of the end of the First World War. This day was first called Armistice Day. An armistice is a truce, a temporary ceasing of hostilities so that warring parties can negotiate, and what they wanted to negotiate on this occasion was, by then, peace.

During this war many people lost their lives in battles fought in fields in Flanders. Five battles took place in the fields near the strategic town of Ypres in Belgium. The second of these happened in the spring when the fields were full of  poppies in bloom. It is said that the larks were the only birds that refused to leave the sky and kept flying over the blasting cannons and the men who were killing and dying. Many of the fallen soldiers were buried in these fields.Wooden crosses were planted on their graves which were surrounded year after year by poppies. Many people travelled there to visit the graves of their loved ones. When they returned home, they had vivid memories of the white crosses and the red poppies.

Below is a video of a poem written by a Canadian physician named John McCrae when he saw a twenty-two year old friend of his dead among the poppies. It is one of the most famous poems of World War I.

The First World War was called "the war to end all wars," and many people decided to fight it precisely for this reason. But you can't end wars with a war, and in no time some people were so angry about how this last war had ended that the Second World War took place. That is when Armistice Day became Remembrance Day and unfortunately for everybody there have been new people to remember practically every year after that. We don´t approve of violence at all, but if unpleasantness does occur and someone defends you, it is only natural to be grateful.

One day we will try to do it better, but for the meantime, this poem can be translated more or less like this:

Questions:  / Preguntas:

1. What is Poppy Day? / ¿Qué es el Día de las Amapolas?
2. When did the First World War end? / ¿Cuándo terminó la Primera Guerra Mundial?
3. What is the purpose of an armistice? / ¿Cuál es el propósito de un armisticio?
4. Where did some of the most famous battles of the First World War take place?
5. Why did many people visit Belgium after the First World War?
6. When was Armistice Day renamed Remembrance Day?
And the prize question is: In spring and among larks and poppies, what do you think is the real quarrel of all the people - yes, all - who fell on Flanders fields?

Nauta's Mini Mythology - Amphion and Orpheus / Mini mitología de Nauta - Anfión y Orfeo

Nauta

Hello. It is now November and the one thing there is plenty of in this month is falling leaves. Whenever I look at a tree in Autumn I am reminded of two fellows that sang really well.

Hola.

This is Amphion. Whenever he sang, trees danced. Yes, they liked his music. They are not running away. That´s all I´m going to tell you about him.

Tennyson

’Tis said he had a tuneful tongue,
Such happy intonation,
Wherever he sat down and sung
He left a small plantation...

Se dice que su voz era melodiosa
Y tan feliz su intonación,
Que al sentarse para cantar cualquier cosa
A su alrededor dejaba una plantación...

Byron

It's the first of November. This blog should be posting on Don Juan. That's tradition.

Zorrilla

I believe they first want to visit my house in Valladolid. Maybe they´ll be ready next year.

Nauta

We'll try and do something about that next year, gentlemen. Right now I was going to do Orpheus and Eurydice. It's a sad story, but quite apt to listen to in melancholic autumn. They were very much in love, and wandered through fields and woods together, he singing, she dancing around him. His voice was so beautiful that all things animate and inanimate responded to it. It made stones move and changed the courses of  rivers. But one day Eurydice stepped on a viper that retaliated by biting her foot and that was the end of their bucolic bliss. Poor Eurydice went straight to Hades, where things are so dark and gloomy that nobody feels much like dancing.

Orpheus couldn't resign himself to living without her. It is not difficult to enter Hades, unless you want to do it alive. But Orpheus entered singing and no one stopped him, so mesmerized were all the inhabitants of the underworld by his fantastic voice. He got to go all the way up to Queen Persephone and King Hades Pluto unmolested. In his song, he asked them to return Eurydice to him. Moved to tears of iron, Hades agreed to do it. But there was one condition. Orpheus would walk out of Hades without once looking back to see if Eurydice was following him. Orpheus should have waited until he was well out of Hades before looking back, but he looked back too soon. Eurydice was still in the cavern and she was sucked back into the darkness crying a sad farewell. There was no second chance for Orpheus, who wandered alone making stones cry with his tragic songs until he met his own death. Sob.

Sniff.

Christoph Willibald Gluck

I composed an opera about Orpheus and Eurydice in three acts, with a chorus and dances. It was first performed in Vienna in 1762.

Mini Quiz

1. What happened when Amphion sang? / ¿Qué pasaba cuanto Anfión cantaba?
2. Where did Mr. Zorilla have a house that is now a museum?
3. Why did Eurydice die? / ¿Por qué murió Eurídice?
4. What did Hades Pluto do when he heard Orpheus sing? / ¿Qué hizo Hades Plutón cuando escuchó cantar a Orfeo?
5. Why did Eurydice have to return to the underworld?
6. Who mentioned Amphion in a  poem and who composed an opera about Orpheus and Eurydice?

Byron

I have a question. Shouldn´t that "sung" in "whenever he sat down and sung" be "sang"?

Tengo una pregunta. Ese "sung" ¿no es participio? ¿Y no debería ser "sang," pasado simple?
