The Chi / El Chi

Wisteria

Air is not an element. Air is similar to what we call Chi, energy that can be positive or negative according to the places through which it passes and the things it finds on its way.

Chi

I am positive. I move as smoothly as silk through harmonious places with harmonious sounds, such as the tinkling of tiny well-tuned bells and the sweet chirping of song birds..
I must not pass too rapidly or find too many obstacles in my path or be frightened by sudden or persistent noises. Should that happen, I would change.

Soy positivo.

Shar Chi

Grrr! If my path is not easy and smooth, I become negative and aggressive. I become evil Shar Chi and I bring misfortune and calamity wherever I pass.
To be lucky, it is absolutely necessary to attract good Chi and repel Shar Chi. Michael, let us now see your house.

¡Grrr!
Michael, ahora vamos a ver tu casa.

Michael

Fine. I will think of the magic keywords that will take us to my house. Hmmm. Hmmm. There you have it.

Bien. Hmmm. Hmmm. Ahí la tienen.

Master Foo Ling

¡Ayayyeeeeee!

Michael

What happened? Your rabbit doesn´t like my house? Excuse me, I mean your grandfather.

¿Qué ha pasado? ¿No le gusta mi casa a tu conejo? Perdón. ¿A tu abuelo?

Wisteria

This house is a jinx. Horrible calamities will befall its owner.

Esta casa es gafe. Horrorosas desdichas sucederán a su dueño.

Michael

But why? Is the entrance in the wrong place? It faces west. Should it face east?
¿Pero por qué? ¿Está mal situada la entrada? Da al oeste. ¿Es que debe dar al este?

Wisteria

Door in wrong direction is minor problem. You can fix that with mirrors that will fool the Chi into thinking it is in the right place instead of the wrong one. The horrible problem is the huge beams which are in plain sight of day. They are like poisoned dards that pierce the Chi and poison it.

Puerta mal situada, menor problema.

Fergus

I was skeptical but now I believe! You see? I told you I didn't like your choice of a Tudor style home at all. What kind of an Irishman has an English house?

Michael

But it is a replica of Shakespeare´s mother's house. I don´t think she had it so tough. She had a boy who grew up to be a genius.
And the beams aren't sharp and pointy.

Wisteria

That doesn´t matter. The beams are like venomous lances that produce Shar Chi, bad luck. You must cover those beams any way you can because what can´t be seen doesn´t exist. Another nefarious thing is that peach tree you have in the backyard.

Michael

The peach tree is nefarious? It is in the health sector and it happens to be a symbol of good health.

Wisteria

In that corner is the home of the five ghosts. They will perch on the tree like birds of ill omen and ruin your health.

Michael

There are five ghosts living in my house?

¿En mi casa viven cinco fantasmas?

Wisteria

There are five evil ghosts living together somewhere in every house. The owner has to see to it they are evicted as soon as possible. You must move the peach tree somewhere else and put a toilet here so it will suck up the five ghosts and remove them from here. Toilet seats are very dangerous. You always have to keep the cover down so they won´t absorb the Chi and drag away all your good luck along with it.

Michael

But how am I going to put a toilet in the middle of my garden? Well, maybe I can hide it within a shack so nobody can see what it is. But then, since what you don´t see doesn´t exist, the ghosts won´t go down the toilet. Or will they? What a mess!

Vaya lio.

An hour and a half later...

Una hora y media después...

Wisteria

Well, you now know all you have to do to fix your home. Good luck to you and here is your bill.

Michael

My bill? Wasn't this a free consultation?

¿La cuenta? ¿No era esto una consulta gratis?

Wisteria

Yes. Your cousins bought a free session as a gift for you. But the bill has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the fruit store. That kid you brought with you has eaten all our stock. One last piece of free advice. If that kid were in the place where he belongs, which is among the humans, you wouldn´t have to pay huge bills like this one.

Michael

I must admit you're right about that. I can't deny we wouldn't have this kind of problems, but it´s something we´ve decided to live with.

Wisteria

If you ever tire of him, we can place him among the E Gui ghosts, Chinese spectres that are always hungry. He won´t stand out so much among them.

I suggest you do this project.

Os propongo un proyecto.

Project
Now that you have a list of parts of the house and this list of furniture and similar stuff, Feng Shui something. For example, make a sketch of your bedroom, locate the different sections using the rough bagua from the Toora Chronicles and describe how you would decorate it. Remember the right colours for each section and which things should go where.

Proyecto

Another thing you can do is Feng Shui your English classroom. Where should each pupil sit according to his or her trigram? Make a little map. The result could be surprising. Will this arrangement bring peace and quiet to the class or would it be explosive? Lol. (Lots of laughs)

Don Quijote

They say an Englishman’s home is his castle. Or, as we would say in Spain, in it he is the master of an Andalusian farm. And speaking of homes, I have a cowbell, a goat and some musical instruments they call by the newfangled name of maracas in the health zone of my house. Which is the equivalent of having a hatter, a March hare and some nuts in English.

Sancho Panza

Don´t remove those things. The place is very clean and full of lignt and freshly painted in the right colours and that stuff is what make you unique. Shall we review the parts of a house in English? I go through house vocabulary like, as we say in Spanish, Peter moves about his home.

No quite esas cosas.

Two Cycles / Dos ciclos

Watch this video about the productive and destructive cycles of the the five elements in the art of Feng Shui.

Bagua / Bagua

Fergus

In the western world there are four elements, which are fire, water, air and earth.

Wisteria

In the art of Feng Shui the elements are five, and they are metal, water, wood, fire and earth. Metal contains water, water nurtures wood, wood feeds fire, fire produces earth and earth is where metal can be found. For a place to be auspicious, all these elements have to be present there in the necessary quantity to produce this cycle on and on. If one of these elements is missing or if there is an excess of a certain element in your house, there will be no good luck. Only horrible misfortunes will happen.

Alpin

Nonsense. If metal contains wáter, I have never seen it. And I think it can hardly hold enough water to put out a fire.

Branna

Alpin, allow these people to do their job or go straight home.

Fiona

Above is a sketch of  a map I made when I furnished my house. It is called bagua and is divided into nine sections, one for each of the eight directions and trigrams, plus the center. Each section is related to something important in life: health, career, marriage, etc. If you put an onion paper map of your house on this map you will be able to see in what spots you can work to obtain wealth, love, health, etc. You must lay your map on this scratch bagua placing the entrance to your house on top of the section where it really is. For example, the door to my house is in the southeast. That means that the front door and the hall of my house are the spots that can make me prosper if I decorate them properly with objects that represent what I wish to obtain. There is a list of examples of such objects in each section.

Branna

If your house is square or rectangular or round, your map and the bagua will be easy to work with. But if your house is L-shaped, or has some other kind of strange shape, sections may be missing. If, for example, the southeast corner is missing, you will have money problems unless you apply a remedy. Look at my scratch bagua to see what each section is about and what there should be in it.

Fiona

You can also put in each section objects from the section of the element that favors the element of the first section.

Alpin

I don´t understand anything.

No entiendo nada.

Fiona

How will you understand if you don´t look at the bagua?

¿Cómo vas a entender si no miras el bagua?

Branna

For example, if you want to get married, you can put in the southwest section, which has earth for an element, objects that represent fire, because fire produces earth and will make the southwest section stronger. But don' t put objects that represent metal there, because your chances of marrying will diminish, since metal exhausts earth. Don't put objects that represent water either, because water turns earth into mud. Incompatible elements must not be put together except when you have too much of one element and want to reduce it.

Alpin

Then why should I put ducks in this corner? I´m getting dizzy. I need some air.

Me estoy mareando. Necesito aire.

Fiona

Because a pair of ducks or swans is a symbol of marital bliss.

Noah Found Grace / Noé halló gracia

Lyrics of Noah Found Grace in the Eyes of the Lord

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
And landed high and dry!

Oh, the Lord looked down from His window in the sky and said,
"I created man but I don't remember why.
Nothin' but fightin' since creation day,
I'm gonna send a little water and I'll wash'em all away."

The Lord came down to look around a spell
And there was Mr. Noah behavin' mighty well
And that is the reason the Scriptures record
That Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
And he landed high and dry!

Oh, the Lord said,"Noah, there's gonna' be a flood
And there's gonna be some water and there's gonna be some mud,
So take off your hat, Noah, and take off your coat,
Get Shem, Ham and Japeth and build yourself a boat."

Noah said, "Lord, I don't believe I could."
The Lord said, "Noah, get some gopher wood.
Now, you never know what you can do till you try,
Build it 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high."

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
And he landed high and dry.

Oh, Noah said, "There she is, there she is, Lord!"
The Lord said,  "Noah, it's time to get aboard!"
Take of each creature a he and a she,
And, of course, Mrs. Noah and your whole family."
Noah said, "Lord, it's gettin' mighty dark!"
The Lord said,  "Noah, get those creatures on the ark!"
Noah said, "Lord, it's beginning to pour!"
And the Lord said,  "Hurry up and shut the door!"

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
And he landed high and dry!

Oh, the ark rose up in the middle of the deep
And after 40 days Mr. Noah took a peek, said,
"We´re not moving,  Lord. Where are we at?"
The Lord said, "You´re sitting on the Mount Ararat."

Noah said, "Lord, it´s getting mighty dry!"
The Lord said,  "Noah, see my rainbow in the sky!"
Take all those creatures and people the earth,
but be sure you´re not more trouble than you're worth."

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord!
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord,
And he landed high and dry!

The 8 Chinese Trigrams / Los 8 trigramas chinos

Fiona

We always say that nine is our favorite number. In Feng Shui, nine is also a basic number. There are eight directions in which we can move away from the place where we are standing still, which would be the center. The Chinese give each of these directions – and also the center – a number. I have made a simple sketch so you can see all this better.

Each of the eight directions corresponds to a trigram. Trigrams are drawn by drawing lines that may or may not be cut in half. Each trigram is related to the number of the place where it belongs. Below is a sketch similar to the one above, but with the trigrams added.

What is all this good for? To help put each thing in its place. Branna will now help you find your personal trigram so that you will know which is your place. For things to go well with you, it is convenient that the door to your house be in the direction that corresponds to your trigram.

Branna

Finding your trigram is an easy but slightly sexist operation. It is done one way for men and another for women. Since I am a woman and I don´t want to be prejudiced, I will be courteous and show you first how it is done for men.

If you are a man, you find your trigram this way:

You have to know the year of your birth, for example, 1996..

Add the last two numbers of the year of your birth: 9+6=15

If the result has two cyphers, add the first to the second to get just one number: 1+5=6

Substract 6 from 10: 10-6=4
Resta 6 a 10: 10-6=4

The final result is 4, the numbre of the trigram SUN.

Therefore, SUN is your trigram, wood is your element, 4 is your number and the southeast is your direction and the direction of the door to your house if you are to be lucky.

If you are a woman, you find your trigram like this:

You have to know your year of birth, for example, 1984

Add the last two númbers of your year of birth: 8+4=12

Since the result has two cyphers, add the first to the second to obtain only one: 1+2=3

Add 5 to the result above: 5+3=8
Añade 5 al resultado de la operación anterior: 5+3=8

The final result is 8, which is the number of the trigram KEN.

So KEN is your trigram, the mountain is your symbol, 8 is your number, the northeast your direction and the direction of the front door of your house if you are to be lucky.

If we take a door´s direction into account, it comes as no surprise that there are so many unhappy people.

Change the doors to my houses this minute! Mine and my parents. Hey! Why have I only got two houses?

¡Eh! ¿Por qué sólo tengo dos casas?

Just one more detail. The Chinese year doesn´t start at the same time as the Western year. So if you were born in January or the beginning of February, to find your trigram you may have to work with the year before your western year of birth. For example, if you were born on January 5, 2003 you should do the operations with the year 2002.
