Ogden Nash's Guppy and Animal Vocabulary / El "guppy" de Ogden Nash y Vocabulario de Animales

Ogden Nash

The Guppy

Whales have calves,
Cats have kittens,
Bears have cubs,
Bats have bittens,
Swans have cygnets,
Seals have puppies,
But guppies just have little guppies.

Michael

You don't know what a guppy is? If you´ve seen an aquarium, you are almost sure to have seen more than one guppy. Those beautifully colored fresh water fishies are not only decorative. They also help combat malaria eating up future mosquitos.

Don Quijote

Humorist Ogden Nash's verses titled "The Guppy," are really about the names of the offspring of some animals.

Free Food / Comida gratis

And now, in the garden of Death’s Coachman, Grandpa Rabbit, who is a prankster and loves to bait difficult children, has challenged Alpin.

Grandpa Rabbit / El Abuelo Conejo

If you manage to catch me, I will give you a gift of great value. Heh, heh, heh, heh!

Alpin

The old codger thinks I will never catch him because he does Tai Chi every day in the forest, but what he doesn´t know is …

Arley

Stop, Alpin! Forget Grandpa Rabbit! He´s heading for the forest! You´re not welcome there!

¡Detente, Alpin! ¡Olvida al  Abuelo Conejo! ¡Se dirige hacia el bosque! ¡No eres bienvenido ahí!

Alpin

that I have a shotgun!

¡qué tengo una escopeta!

Arley

No! It´s not worth chasing him! He is clearly kidding! He won´t give you a thing!

¡No! ¡No merece la pena perseguirle! ¡Te está tomando el pelo! ¡No te va a dar nada!

Alpin

Bite the dust, bunny!

¡Muerde el polvo, conejillo!

Bang!

¡Pum!

Arley

Help! Armed madman on the loose! Ohh! Look, Alpin, food!

¡Socorro! ¡Loco armado anda suelto! ¡Ohh! Mira, Alpin, ¡comida!

Alpin

It's true. Somebody forgot their picnic here. And I'm starving. Well, finders keepers, losers weepers.

Arley

Maybe we shouldn't take this. At least not while you have the gun. They might accuse us of armed robbery.

Alpin

Nah! I bet Grandpa put this here because he knows I would have caught him. It's the gift he promised me.

¡Qué no!

A voice from behind the trees

I put that there for you. Would you like an apple?

Yo puse eso ahí para vosotros. ¿Os apetece una manzana?

Alpin

Yow!

¡Miedo!

Woods Expo / Expo del bosque

LeafyVinny / Vicentico Hojita

If I were you I would go see this.

Arley

I've already seen it. What I liked best was how pretty the colours of the pollen are. And you can see that there without sneezing.

Crush / Quedado

Arley

Oh, hi! Good morning to you all, sirs. No, there’s nothing wrong…with me.

¡Ah, hola! Buenos días a todos, señores. No, no me pasa nada…a mí.

Leopold / Leopoldo

You see? He even calls us “sirs.” Great kid!

¿Lo veis? ¡Hasta nos llama “señores”! ¡Gran muchacho!

Malcolfus / Malcolfo

Tell us about it, kid. You can trust us. Many hide their secrets in woods, so we know lots of secrets. But we´ve never told a secret we’ve been asked to keep. Ask around and you’ll hear how they say clever people trust the Leafies of Minced Forest with their secrets while fools bury them in Pharoahs’ tombs.

Vinny / Vicentico

What’s that you´re hiding?

¿Qué es eso que escondes?

Arley

I´m not hiding anything. I´m clutching something against my broken heart. It´s nothing but a valentine I didn´t dare send because I know my love is impossible.

No escondo nada.

Vinny / Vicentico

And who was it for?

¿Y para quién era?

Arley

Well, for…well, someone older than me and very much in love with someone else and …I know very well that she´s not interested in me. But she’s always been very kind to me and I like her a lot so I thought that maybe it wouldn’t matter if I told her so. But then I didn´t dare because she is the mum of a friend of mine and maybe he wouldn´t understand.

Frankie / Curro

Listen, kid, are you saying you have a crush on the demon bride? Because we are all of us in love with her at times. We can´t help it. She is fatally attractive.

Arley

You really mean that? You’ve noticed how wonderful she is? Since everyone is always insulting her and calling her a witch, I thought I was the only one who had noticed how kind she can be.

She is the only person who reads my poems whole and who puts them on her fridge and makes comments about them, which is how I know she really reads them. And whenever she bakes a cake, she always keeps the piece that is decorated the prettiest for me, which is no mean feat, knowing how fast Alpin gobbles everything up.

Frankie / Curro

Yep, the lady is enchanting when she is in a good mood. We all have reasons to like her, because she can make us happy when she wants to but she´s a very difficult person to make happy herself. You could have given her the valentine. She would have found it touching. But you should find yourself a new love, like we all have. And that’s it.

Arley

Maybe I should begin to look this same morning. But I promised Alpin I would go over to his place to play with him. Bueno, tal vez me ayude a buscar...

Well, maybe he will help me look...

Nauta's Mini Mythology - Amazons / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Amazonas

I think March might be a good time to introduce you to the daughters of the god that gave this month its  belligerent name, Mars, god of war. They are the Amazons, women who like to fight their own battles. To avoid being bossed by men, the Amazons live in all female communities. When they have children they keep the girls and send the boys away, back to their fathers. One of the most famous Amazons is Queen Hippolyta, who is wearing her crown to distinguish herself  from the others in the picture below.

Amazons could ride and fight like the best of male horsemen and warriors. They are credited with having invented the battle-ax, which is maybe why in English aggressive and / or fierce-looking women are called battle-axes. Even today, women who ride very well on horseback are said to be splendid Amazons, and in Spanish riding sidesaddle is called "montar a lo amazona." In case you don´t know what a sidesaddle is, here are a picture of a lady riding sidesaddle today as well as a picture of a sidesaddle that we found in Images on the Internet. The sidesaddle was invented so women could ride wearing skirts. Personally, I think it has to be more difficult to ride like this.

Now you tell me, what else can you think of that is named after the Amazons?

Leafy Frankie / Curro Hojita

And the good news is that they won´t chop down our forest to redecorate Binky's office. The Feng Shui fairy told Binky that his office was perfect in every way and that the only thing he had to do was find one of those containers where they dump paper so it can be recycled and throw all there is in his office there and never hoard any more.

The Feng Shui fairy thinks just like we do, but since Binky never understands anything they tell him that he doesn´t want to hear, he isn´t going to pay any attention to her or to us. What he made out of this is that he has to be modern and make use of the new technologies. And the bad news is that for telling him what we constantly tell him for free, she has charged thousands and thousands of fairypence.

Malcolfus / Malcolfo

Fairypence don’t exist. They are a project of Binky´s.

Los hadapeniques no existen. Son un proyecto de Binky.

That is why Wisteria Tai tai said that she would rather take what was owed her in tried and true fairy favors, like we fairies always have done. And now there is no telling what she will ask him for when she needs it.

Leopold / Leopoldo

Yes, that´s the worst thing about trading fairyfavors. You hardly ever know what they will ask you for in exchange of a favor or when they will want to ask for it. It’s like handing out a blank check. Oh, well, as they say in Spanish, let the sun rise where it pleases. Wisteria´s last name is Tai tai?

Frankie / Curro

No. That means “Mrs.” and you say it after a lady´s name. And after discussing the bill they went off to have a business lunch at The Poultice.

Vinny /Vicentico

The Poultice is a poshy restaurant frequented by those of us who act like humans. At first I was shocked by what I saw and heard there, but after a while I got hungry and concentrated on the food which began to look interesting and I think that eating there has to be some kind of an experience. If I win the lottery with the little clover on it, I might go try the tasting menu.

Malcolfus / Malcolfo

Wow! Even watching power play corrupts!

¡Caray!¡Hasta observar al poder corrompe!

Frankie / Curro

Nonsense! He´ll never win the little clover lottery. Look! Here comes Titania´s boy.

¡Tonterias! ¡Mirad! Por ahí viene el niño de Titania.

Leopold / Leopoldo

I like that kid. He does no harm to the plants or animals in this forest.

Malcolfus / Malcolfo

Well, he looks sad today.

Pues hoy parece triste.

Leopold / Leopoldo

It’s probably because soon he’ll be plagued by allergy. To think that we are the ones that make precisely him suffer.

Frankie / Curro

No, we aren´t. It´s the junk the humans put in the environment all mixed up with the lack of love between us. We are not the bad guys.

No somos nosotros.

Vinny / Vicentico

Hey, kid! What’s the matter with you? He hasn´t answered. Is he a sleepwalker?

¡Eh, niño! ¿Qué te pasa? No ha contestado. ¿Será sonámbulo?

Is he? /¿Lo será?
