Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Galatea / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Galatea

Hi. I'm Nauta. Someone has stolen my picture and made it so it can't appear in this post. I have also had to try to restore today's main illustration. Let's see if I can. Looks like yes.  Today I am going to introduce you to Galatea. She is the person in the illustration who needs a twice 50+ sun protection factor. Galatea stood out among the other Nereids or sea nymphs because she had the whitest skin anyone had ever seen. It was so white that it attracted the attention of Polyphemus, the cyclops or one-eyed giant that is towering behind the rocks in the illustration.

Hoy voy a presentaros a Galatea.

Polyphemus was a goatherd who was very proud of the quality of the milk his goats gave. He boasted it was the whitest thing ever until he set eyes on Galatea. It was for this reason that he felt she had to be his. He wanted to be famous for being the proud vendor of the whitest goat's milk as well as the fellow with the whitest girlfriend. It would be great publicity for his business. But Galatea had other plans. She was in love with a handsome young shepherd named Acis, the third person in the illustration.

One day Polyphemus spied on them while they were together and felt so jealous and frustrated that he threw a boulder on Acis. It was so large it covered the young man entirely, but when Galatea saw his blood start to seep out from under it, she knew she had to act quickly. She turned the blood into water and poor crushed Acis into a river. It was the best she could do for him.

All this happened in Sicily, near Mt. Etna, where Galatea built for herself a home near the river that eventually became a famous temple. The image above is of a painting of  Mt. Etna by the Anglo-American painter Thomas Cole.

Somewhere in the South Pole... / En alguna parte del Polo Sur...

                               Michael

Yes. This summer I think I managed to get away. I lay low for a while and then disappeared entirely quite early. Sure, I had to give up on palm trees and paradisiacal beaches. I had to come all the way to the South Pole to finally feel free during the summer. It may not be much of a vacation but this year at least no one is annoying me. Of course that is because there is no living being here in the South Pole excepting me and a few microbes that can survive rather well in the ice. Supposedly birds called skuas sometimes pass by but I have yet to see one. So here I am ready to celebrate my birthday with a huge cake I might end up sharing with the microbes because I can't see too well. It is winter in this place, and the only light that shines during this season is moonlight. Still, I've managed to light four candles. What is that noise?

Pero he conseguido encender cuatro velas. ¿Qué es ese ruido?

The pilot of the helicopter sees the light and goes straight to it.

This will probably continue. Mr. Binky has some explaining to do.

Grey City / Ciudad Gris

Arley

In this human city you can play the little clover lottery game. It´s a quiet place, so we are as safe here as we could possibly be anywhere else. But don't take your cap off even for a second. It is five o´clock in the afternoon. It's so hot here and the sun so bright it would shrivel you up in a minute or ignite you in a flash. But it´s best to come at this hour because there are less people in the streets.

Vinny / Vicentico

I sure will keep my cap on. And I´m carrying a little bottle of dew water with me so I won´t dry up, just like you advised me. And I´m even wearing sunglasses too. It´s true, I see, that the ground here is like a river of stone, flanked by banks of flat rocks. There is neither grass nor piles of fallen leaves on it and it is hard as the hearts of the horrid humans. Is it true there are monstrous traps on the hard city ground and that delicate and airy things can get stuck to them forever if they step into one or are stepped on?

Arley

I’m not sure what those black spots are. But they might be worse than black holes, so don't step on the floor at all. Terrible things could happen. Just try to hover over the ground flying with your ears.

Remember, if we run into a mortal, we´d better get out of his or her way before we are taken for mosquitoes.

Vinny / Vicentico

These aren´t my ears, they´re my wings. I´m wing-headed. If I see a mortal, I´ll take off like a bat out of hell. Yes, yes, I know, I mustn´t lose my head. I have to keep cool and be alert and move fast and with intention among mortals.

How dreadful! What is that? Why have they put that poor little tree in the pillory?

Arley

That is a city tree. The wooden stick is supposed to help the tree stand. It's so the tree has something to lean on till its roots become familiar with this new ground and grow strong enough to hold it up.

Vinny / Vicentico

How could it not need something to lean on here! Surely it can´t have grown in such a place. It must be scared to death! Alone and tied to a stick when it should be with its parents! Among its kith and kin! You´re lying to me. Of course it´s in the pillory. They´ve even thrown things at it! Look at all the garbage there is around it.

Me estás mintiendo.

Arley

I´m not lying. It's true they've put that stick there to try to help it. Some humans like trees and miss them and try to have them nearby. That's why they brought it here. But, yes, others are mean and throw things around them. And everywhere else too. Hence the saying so popular among us that where there are humans there is trash.

No te miento.

Vinny / Vicentico

What happens to the leaves that fall to the ground? Can they return to the earth fusing into this solid stone ground?

Arley

Certain…persons are paid to come for them and take them to a place where they can melt into…their surroundings.

Vinny / Vicentico

I would like to check that place out. Can we visit it?

¿Podemos visitarlo?

Arley

Eh... Better on another outing. It might prove too much for one day. Let´s concentrate on our present purpose. Look, we´ve arrived at the place we wanted to get to. I am going to shift my size so I will pass for a human. You sit on my cap and you will see everything well from there. They will take you for a collectible doll if you hold still and are quiet. The owner has just opened her business. She looks like one of the nicer ones. Perhaps we will be lucky.

Eh... Tal vez tengamos suerte.

Lottery seller / Lotera

Certainly not. You´re a minor. You can´t buy lottery tickets.

Claro que no. Eres un menor. No puedes comprar lotería.
