Make a wish / Haz un deseo

Sancho

I wish to learn to wish in English.

Deseo aprender a desear en inglés.

So I’m going to review wishing sentences.

Examples:
I wish I were home.
Deseo / Desearía / Quisiera estar en casa.
We wish you a happy birthday.
Te deseamos un feliz cumpleaños.
I wish to have breakfast now.
Deseo desayunar ahora.

PRACTICE:

Escribe estas oraciones en inglés:

1. Quisiera ser más rápida. (quick, adjetivo)

2. Desearía no estar cansada. (tired, adjetivo)

3. Deseo irme a casa ahora mismo. (to go, verbo)

4. Ella desea irse inmediatamente. (to leave, verb)

Examples:
She wished she had cleaned her house when she saw the gossipy neighbor approach it.
Ben will wish he could be with us tonight, but I don’t think he will be able to come to our party.
Have you ever wished you could fly?
¿Alguna vez has deseado poder volar?
He had often wished he were smarter than he was.
You’ll wish you had never been born!
¡Desearás no haber nacido!

Examples:
If only you were here!
¡Ojalá estuvieses aquí!
If only I had a sister like you.
¡Ojalá tuviese una hermana como tú!
I’d love to go with you. If only I could!
Me encantaría ir contigo. ¡Ojalá pudiese!
If only I had listened to my father!
¡Ojalá hubiese escuchado a mi padre!

PRACTICE:
Rewrite these sentences.

1. I wish they would pay me today.

2. If only I could be with you.

3. I wish she could visit us.

4. We wish you had told us you were coming.

5. If only we had known Peter needed us.

Ojo con could: En las oraciones desiderativas no se usa can, se usa could.
Examples:
I wish I could swim.
Deseo poder nadar. / Desearía poder nadar. / Me gustaría poder nadar.
She wishes she could read and write.
Ella desea saber leer y escribir.

Se suele usar “would.”
Examples:
I wish my visitor would go home.
She wishes you would come to see her.
I wish Biddy would shut up!
Me gustaría que se callase Biddy! / Deseo que se calle Biddy.
If only Biddy would shut up!
We wish the pumpkin would turn into a carriage.

PRACTICE:
Subraya los dos sujetos.
1. We wish you would stop shouting.
2. They wish she would invite them to her wedding.
3. Peter had never wished his mother would buy him a bicycle before.
4. Will we wish they could come?
5. I wish someone could help me with my homework.

Examples:
I wish I hadn’t eaten so much.
¡Ojalá no hubiese comido tanto!
Sam wishes he had studied for the test.
Sam quisiera haber estudiado para el examen.
Ya ves: wish +had/hadn’t +participio

PRACTICE:

3. Deseo que te conviertas en una calabaza. (turn into, pumpkin)

4. Quisiera que este vestido fuese azul.

5. ¡Ojalá vengan a verme mis amigos!

6. ¡Ojalá estudiases más!

7. ¡Ojalá fuese todo tan fácil! (so easy)

8. Ellos nunca han deseado tener más dinero.

9. Desearía poder nadar.

10. Quisiera ser tan guapa como tú. (as beautiful as)

You can wish on a star. My experience is they are rather unfriendly. They rarely grant you wishes. Some people even believe it is unlucky to ask them for wishes. But many people think you have a better chance of having your wish come true if you ask a shooting star.

To ask a star for a wish, first you have to recite the jingle below. Immediately after doing that, ask for the wish. Good luck.

Inmediatamente despues, pide tu deseo. Suerte. De la buena.

Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

Estrella rutilante, estrella brillante,

Vincent Van Gogh

Yes, some stars are always cross.

Sí, algunas estrellas tienen mal genio.

Stars

The trouble is the rhyme lacks the magic word.

The Spanish version of "Star light, star bright," is our own translation.

Third Conditional Review / Revisar el tercer condicional inglés

Sancho

I'm getting to be so good at this that I make more mistakes in Spanish than in English.

usa en el resultado: would, could o might + have + participio
(ojo, siempre es have, nunca has)
Examples:
If you had come with me, I would have gone to the theatre.
I couldn't have gone to Jane’s party if you hadn't taken me to her house in your car.
I might have gone to the picnic if I had felt better.
Quizás habría ido al picnic si me hubiese sentido mejor.

PRACTICE:
1. He _________(buy) the shirts if he _________ (have) enough money with him.
2. We _________(pick) you up at the train station if we _______ (know) you were coming to see us.
3. Sylvia _________ (open) the door if she__________ (know) you were the one knocking.
4. I ___________ (study) for the test if I __________ (not take)  my grandma to the hospital.
5. They _________ (see) you dance on TV if you __________ (tell) them you would be on that show.
6. I___________ (choose) to study French if I _________ (know) Pierre would be my teacher.
7. The girls ____________ (not give) their old clothes away if they __________ (know) Tina wanted them.
8. She ____________ (not sell) her apartment if her parents ___________ (not buy )her a new house.
9. I __________ (not plant) olive trees in your garden if I _____________ (know) you were allergic to them.
10. We ____________ (go) birdwatching if the weatherman ___________ (not say) it would rain.

If that shoe hadn’t lost a nail, my kingdom would not have been lost.

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost.
All for the want of a nail!

Yes/ no questions:
La condición es igual, pero el resultado empieza por would, could o might seguido del sujeto y luego have y el participio.
Examples:
If Gracie hadn’t married Jim, would she have married Bob?
Would you have helped me if you had known I needed your help?
If we had asked her to, could Sara have come to the meeting?
Might John have finished his work on time if we hadn’t interrupted him?

PRACTICE:
1. ________ Alice ________ (eat) the fish if her mother __________ (cook) it?
2. _______ Alfred _________ (study) medicine if he __________ (pass) the entrance exam with better marks?

5. _________ John___________ (marry) Sandra if he ________ (suspect) she was really in love with Samuel?
6. _________ Alice _______ (open) the door if she _________ (not have) a key?
7. If Aurelia _________ (eat) the poisoned fruit, _______ she _______ (die)?

Wh- Questions:
Lo mismo que las otras pero en el resultado la palabra pregunta se coloca delante de would, could o might.
Examples:
What would you have done with the money if you hadn’t given it to Susan?
Where could you have spent your holiday if you had had enough money to go on a cruise?
If they had told Peter they were leaving in good time, might he have gone with them to Brazil?

2. When ______ you ________ clean the garage if you ________ (have) time to do it?
3. Where ________ you ________ (hide) the papers if Alex _______ (trust) you with them?

Nauta's Mini Mythology - Apple of Discord / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Manzana de la Discordia

Nauta

The woman in the picture below is very dangerous to have dealings with. She appears at first as very little and weak, but soon starts growing and can reach more than an XXXL size many times multiplied. Her name is Eris, which means Discord, and her sole occupation is to make people fight, almost always with tragic results. She is so good at her job that Mars, the god of war, fondly calls her his sister.

The most notorious bit of trouble Eris caused was a conflict known as the Trojan War. It was between the Greeks and the Trojans and the latter lost and saw their city razed and burnt to cinders. Today I will explain how and why this war began. This story is known as the Myth of the Apple of Discord.

Many, many years ago, the wedding of the year was that of Peleus and Thetis. Everybody who was anybody was invited to it, and all were very pleased to be so. The goddess of discord, however, was itching for a fight because she had not been asked to attend. She had been left out because she was notorious for causing trouble wherever she went and was far from being the kind of  guest you would want at one of your parties. But Eris was not the type to shrivel up when being snubbed and didn’t hesitate to crash the party. She made a grand entrance right in the middle of the wedding banquet and threw a golden apple at those present. It was inscribed with the word “Kallisti,” which in Greek means “For the Most Beautiful.”

Unfortunately, three of the goddesses present were drawn out. They took Discord’s challenge seriously and each of them simply had to be the one to take the apple home. Zeus, king of the gods, knew the three were very arrogant and was aware how vengeful and dangerous they could be if they were crossed. He did not want to have to face the consequences of making this decision himself, so he decided to name some unfortunate mortal judge in his stead. The poor fellow he chose for this office was a young and handsome Trojan prince named Paris, who was at that moment frolicking on Mount Ida with his wife, a nymph named Oenone.

Zeus sent his messenger, the wing-heeled Mercury, a god we will have more to say about next month, to pass the hot potato – in this case the golden apple – to Paris, while the three goddesses bathed at the Idan Spring to make themselves more beautiful before the Trojan youth passed judgement.

Paris examined each of the goddesses in private, and while he was at it, they tried to bribe him. Hera, queen of the gods and model of Greek wives, offered him political power. She could make him ruler of mighty kingdoms. Athena, goddess of intelligence, offered to teach him the strategies needed to be always victorious in battle. Aphrodite, goddess of love, said she would give him the most beautiful woman in the world for a lover in exchange of the apple.

Paris never explained his choice, so we cannot be sure of his reasons for selecting Aphrodite, but it was to her that he gave the golden apple. She kept her promise and made Helen of Sparta, the most beautiful mortal woman in the world, fall in love with Paris. Helen left her Greek husband, Menelaus, and eloped with Paris, who also abandoned his wife Oenone to be with Helen.

As was to be expected, Hera and Athena were far from pleased at the outcome of this contest. To punish Paris, they urged the Greek Menelaus to stir up his compatriots and attack Troy. And that is how the most famous war in antiquity began. One of the casualties of this war was Achilles, the son of Peleus and Thetis. the couple that had provoked the wrath of Eris by not inviting her to their wedding. Thus did Discord avenge this offense.

Thanks to one of Nausica's findings, you can click on "The Fall of Troy," and see how the war Discord provoked with her apple went. I'll bet the Coppola who was in charge of  the music was related to the Hollywood clan.

Second Conditional / El segundo condicional

Sancho

Examples:
If I were rich, I would buy a yacht and sail the seven seas.
I wouldn’t be so beautiful if you weren’t my mother.
No sería tan guapa si tú no fueses mi madre.
If pigs had wings, they could fly.

Examples:
If I had a car I would visit you.
Si tuviese un coche, te visitaría.
If I had a car, I could visit you.
Si tuviese un coche, te podría visitar.
If I had a car, I might visit you.
Si tuviese un coche, quizás te visitaría.

Jamaica Farewell / Adiós a Jamaica

Jamaica Farewell  / Adiós a Jamaica

Down the way where the nights are gay / Por el camino hacía donde las noches son alegres
And the sun shines daily on the mountain top / Y el sol brilla a diario sobre la cima de la montaña
I took a trip on a sailing ship / Fuí navegando en un barco
And when I reached Jamaica I made a stop / Y cuando llegué a Jamaica hice escala
But I'm sad to say, I'm on my way / Pero siento decir que ya me voy
Won't be back for many a day / No volveré en mucho tiempo
My heart is down, my head is turning around / Mi corazón está triste, mi cabeza mira hacia atrás
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town / Tuve que dejar a una muchachita en la ciudad de Kingston
Sounds of laughter everywhere / El sonido de risas por todas partes
And the dancing girls swing to and fro / Y las bailarinas balanceandose por aca y por alla
I must declare that my heart is there / Debo decir que mi corazón está allí
Though I've been from Maine to Mexico / Aunque he viajado de Maine a México
But I'm sad to say, I'm on my way / Pero siento decir que ya me voy
Won't be back for many a day / No volveré en mucho tiempo
My heart is down, my head is turning around / Mi corazón está triste, mi cabeza mira hacia atrás
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town / Tuve que dejar a una muchachita en la ciudad de Kingston
Down at the market you can hear / En el mercado puedes oir
Ladies cry out while on their heads they bear / A señoras pregonar las mercancias que cargan en la cabeza
Ackee, rice and salt fish are nice / El bacalao con arroz y ackee está rico
And the rum is fine any time of year / Y el ron está bueno en cualquier época del año
But I'm sad to say, I'm on my way / Pero siento decir que me tengo que ir
Won't be back for many a day / No volveré en mucho tiempo
My heart is down, my head is turning around / Mi corazón está triste, mi cabeza mira hacia atrás
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town / Tuve que dejar a una muchachita en la ciudad de Kingston
Down the way where the nights are gay / Por el camino hacía donde las noches son alegres

Easter 2012 / Pascua Florida 2012

Happy Easter / Feliz Pascua Florida

We found this image of the Flower of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Pigeon Orchid, on Images from the Internet. This delicate and wonderful orchid is the national flower of Panama.

First, zero and scientific conditional / Primer condicional, cero y científico

Sancho
Today, I'm reviewing the first, zero and scientific conditionals, soMewHat mIxeD uP!!

Ex. If you study, you will pass the test.

Ex. You will pass the test if you study.

Ex. If you study, you will pass the test.

Examples: If you don’t study, you won’t pass the test.
If you don’t eat, you will die.

PRACTICE:

1. If he _________ (come) by train, I _________ (meet) him at the station.
2. I _________ (buy) the apartment if the bank loans me half the money.
3. She ________ (visit) her mother if you ________(give) her the day off.
4. If you ______ (invite) me to dinner, I _______(tell) you the latest gossip.
5. If you ______(plant)cactuses, you______(not have) to water them a lot.
6. She ________ (not come) to the party if we _________ (not invite) her.

Ex. If it is sunny tomorrow, we may / might go to the beach.

Ex. If you mix blue and yellow, you (will) get green.
En estas condicionales se puede usar when en vez de if.
When / If you don’t eat, you (will) die.
When / If you don't swim, you (will) eventually sink.

Do you know the dilemma of the lady or the tiger?

If a young man chooses the wrong door, a tiger devours him.
If he chooses the right door, he marries a beautiful woman.
And...
If a princess doesn't help her lover, a tiger will devour him.
If she helps her lover, she will lose him to a hated rival.
So...

Read Frank Stockton's story clicking on "The Lady or the Tiger."

If the children were quiet, they stayed up late.

Ex. If you fix the apartment, paint it blue.

Examples:
If you don’t study, you won't pass the test.
Si no estudias, no aprobarás el examen.
Unless you study, you won’t pass the test.
If it doesn´t rain tomorrow, I will go sailing.
Si no llueve mañana, iré a navegar.
I will go sailing tomorrow unless it rains.

PRACTICE:
Complete these sentences so they make sense and first, zero o scientific conditionals.
1. You won’t go the cinema ___________ you finish your homework.
2. If you don’t clean the kitchen, they __________ (close) your restaurant.
3. If Elizabeth calls me, ________ (say) I am not at home.
4. Pat ________ come to visit us if there is room for her in the Smiths’ car.
5. If you hear Paul shouting outside, ________ (throw) the keys to him.
6. If I win the contest, I ________ travel to Jamaica.
7. She won’t go to Thea’s party __________ you go with her.
8. Dad won’t believe our story_______ Mum assures him it’s true.
9. If you bake a pizza, I ________ have a piece or two.
10. I will go to school tomorrow _________ Mum needs me at home.
11. If you mix blue and red, you ________ (get) green.
12. If you drive drunk, you ________ have an accident.
13. If you helped Mrs. Jones in her garden, she _________ (pay) you.
14. You were grounded for a month if you _________(return) home late.
15. If the sun rises, it __________ (be) in the east.

The Bodyguardess / La Guardaespaldesa

Finbar

How awful, Lira! They've been buried right in front of my workshop since February. And I had no idea. And they didn't even have coats on because they thought they would only be here for a half hour or so and it's burning hot in my workshop. People always say it's like being in a furnace in here. I always feel cold, though, like a lizard.

Aislene

So we have hibernated on a bed of ice under blankets of snow for months without being missed by anyone, which is very, very sad. I don't blame you, of course, because we didn't tell you we were coming. But if I didn’t know how absentminded my husband is, I would divorce him. And now more than ever you should understand why I am asking for what I’m asking for, sweet Finbar, darling nephew of mine.

Lira

Don’t go too far telling my husband how much you appreciate him because it makes me very nervous to hear that within the same speech in which you threaten to divorce Uncle Ernest. By the way, it’s not true no one noticed you were missing. My fortunetellers saw you stuck in the snow in their crystal balls and I was going to arrange for you to be rescued but they said they would take care of that. How come they didn’t?

Finbar

You consult fortunetellers, dear heart? Whatever for?

¿Tú consultas a videntes, corazón? ¿Para qué?

Lira

So I will know beforehand if you mean to cheat on me.

Finbar

I should have guessed that! You’re wasting time and money. Need I say you know very well I am only interested in you and my job?

¡Debí imaginármelo! Malgastas tiempo y dinero. ¿Tengo que recordarte que sabes perfectamente que a mí sólo me interesáis tú y mi trabajo?

Lira

So I am told. But…you know what? All these dolls in this workshop are beginning to get on my nerves. I hate April and May because they’re the months you manufacture dolls.

Finbar

Oh, for Og’s sake, let’s change the subject! Ok, let’s see. What should the nanny be like?

Bien, veamos. ¿Cómo ha de ser la niñera?

Alpin

The what? The what did you say? The what?

¿La qué? ¿La qué has dicho? ¿La qué?

Aislene

Erh, what I want for Alpin is a...a...a bodyguardess. Not a nanny. She must be like one of Charlie’s Angels, or like Uma in Kill Bill.

Finbar

Ah. I see. Can do. No problem at all! All I have to do is adapt one of the Barbies. And breathe life into her, of course. One female bodyguard coming up. As I speak, I create! Aberah KeDabar!

Ah. ¡Conforme hablo, creo! ¡Aberah KeDabar!
