Plurals in English / Plurales en inglés

Sancho

Today we're reviewing my list of plurals. It's not the longest list in the world, but it's got what's most frequent and important, at least in my opinion. When we're done reviewing, we'll do the Plurals Test.

1. church __ 2. fox__ 3. glass___ 4. torch __ 5. watch___6. boss___
7. witch ___ 8. wish___ 9. dish___ 10. princess___ 11. miss___

 Don Quijote

A lo mejor te puede ayudar a aprender la regla de es esta frase que encontré en un libro de gramática: Put your brush in the box and come out to the porch for a waltz and a kiss.

1. family /_______ 2. lolly / _______ 3. jelly / ______
4. lady /_______     5. city/ _______ 6. party/ _______
7. butterfly / ________ 8. lorry______ 9. valley_____

Sustantivos que terminan en is, cambian is por es: crisis – crises.
1. oasis / ________ 2. hypothesis / ___________ 3. axis / ________.

1. wolf / ________  2. calf / ________ 3. thief / _________
4. wife / ________  5. half / _________6. life /__________
7. leaf /_________ .

The cattle are lowing.

People va con el verbo en plural: People are funny. The people who live in that house are friendly. My friends are good people. Pero people puede llevar una s cuando se refiere a grupos étnicos: The peoples of Asia (los pueblos de Asia, las gentes de Asia).

Los sustantivos incontables no tienen forma plural y llevan el verbo en singular: rice (arroz), milk (leche), advice (consejo), information (información), news (noticias), baggage (equipaje), luggage (equipaje): The news is good./ Las noticias son buenas. Good advice is worth gold. / Los buenos consejos valen oro. My luggage is outside.

O sea, no tienen singular: glasses (gafas), scissors (tijeras), trousers (pantalones), pants (pantalones), pyjamas (pijamas), shorts (pantalones cortos) suspenders (tirantes).

We'll have more to say another day.

Ya tendremos más que decir otro día.

Nauta's Mini Mythology: The Grey Sisters / Mini Mitología de Nauta:Las Grayas

Nauta

They say November is a gray month. This brings to my mind the Graiai, in English, the Grey Sisters.

These ladies are three in number and live in a cave close to the Garden of the Hesperides, at the western end of the flat world of Greek mythology. They were born old and grey but their faces are beautiful, at least when they keep their eyelids down and their mouths shut, for they have only one eye and one tooth between all three. These they have always shared in perfect harmony, taking turns to use them without any cheating.

The bodies of these ladies are graceful as those of swans and they are as light as the white foam of the sea. Although they are quite stylish and like to dress well - one of them is always on the best-dressed list - it is not often that one can get to see how posh they are because they only come out of their dwelling when there is neither sun nor moon in the sky.

They are very wise. In fact, there is nothing in the world that they don't know, so if you have a difficult question to ask, they are the ones to apply to. But...their names don't encourage visits.

The first is called Deino the Terrible and her name means Dread. The second is Enyo the Warlike. Her name means Horror. And the third is Persis the destructive, also known as the Wasp. Her name means Alarm.

We will have more to say about them another day, but this will have to do for now.

Mini Test:

1. Where do the Grey Sisters live? / ¿Dónde viven las Grayas?
2. What do they look like? ¿Qué aspecto tienen?
3. Why would anyone want to go to the end of the world to visit them?
4. Why are their names scary? /¿Por qué dan miedo sus nombres?

Not a changeling / No un cambiadito

Aislene

That was me! I howled that over my dead body would I give up my baby when we were about to exchange Alpin for a human child!

Arley

You? I thought it was my human mum!

¿Tú? ¡Yo creía que era mi madre humana!

Aislene

Oh, my poor Arley! All this time you thought you were the baby we were going to take in exchange of Alpin?

Oberon

Titania, I told you we shouldn’t have taken him along with us that night. The first time you see the moon should be a beautiful experience. You should see it full up in the sky and also reflected in a pail so you will think you can have it, and it´s a good idea to taste your first ice cream while you’re meeting the moon. Vanilla, of course, it´s lighter for children.

Titania

All you think about is eating! And don’t come near me with that sticky candy web. I took Arley along with us because I couldn’t bear to think someone might steal him from me while we were exchanging Alpin. Why do you think I gave in when Aislene insisted on keeping her baby against thousands of years of tradition?

Arley

Then I’m truly yours? I don’t have to go find my real family and become a human again to make them happy?

¿Entonces soy realmente vuestro?

Oberon

¡Ho, ho, ho! What an idea! What an imagination this child has!

¡Jo, jo, jo! ¡Qué ocurrencia! Menuda imaginación tiene este crío.

Titania

It’s not funny, you fool! So stop laughing this minute. And you, Arley, how could you think we would take a child without leaving another in its place? No decent fairy has ever done that. Ogres and such, well, we know what they are like, but not decent fairies, no! So why would we steal a child if we had decided not to get rid of Alpin?

Arley

I thought maybe, since you had already chosen the child that was to substitute Alpin, you felt sorry for it because it wasn’t going to have the chance to become better than human so you took him anyway.

But is it decent to exchange a dreadful child for a nice one? Without giving the nice kids’ parents a choice, too? I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Oberon

We've always had our doubts. But there are reasons for this tradition that can be explained by history. We always send people we don’t like into exile, and it seems that back in the beginning of time we got rid of people who degenerated into the first humans. We think that an egotist who is born among us is more like them and is better off among them.

Siempre hemos tenido nuestras dudas.

Titania

When we give human parents a bad child in exchange of a good one, at first they seem to have a bad bargain because the bad child wrecks their lives. But this doesn´t last long. When it sees they have nothing left to give him, the wicked creature runs away as soon as it can and goes on being a force for evil elsewhere. But think of all we do for the nice child that humans never could do. And we see to it he remains nice. Even the best of  human children can easily become odious beings when they dwell among mortals. But the child we save grows up to be very considerate and often does a lot to help his human family when it is old enough to. That should compensate.

Oberon

All's well that ends well, eh Arley?

Arley

I suppose so, but…

Supongo que sí, pero…

Titania

That's enough Arley, put an end to your absurd doubts. This is a party and you're spoiling it. Everyone wants to have fun, not listen to you rant and rave about your delusional ideas.

Alpin

Has anybody asked me how I feel about this? Well, I have no absurd doubts. I’m sure I feel offended. I’m not that dreadful a being. I’m the one who should be traumatized here. What will you give me to make up for it? I’m going to sue!

Pues yo no tengo absurdas dudas. ¡Voy a demandar!

Titania

This is what I get for being kind. I'm leaving. I have to get some sleep. I was radiant when I arrived but I'm sure I'm looking faded now.

Esto me pasa por buena. Me voy. Necesito dormir.

Darcy

Don't you worry. I'll ask Alpin to  forget about suing you. You know I'm on your side.

No te preocupes.

Problems with "to" after a verb / Problemas con "to" después de un verbo

Don Quijote

I don't always know when I can write "to" after a verb.

Sancho

You have problems with to after a verb? Look at my crib.

1. Jamás: pongas “to” detrás de would, should, could, can, must, may, might, will, shall.

2. Siempre: ought to y be able to.

I ought to go. Debería irme.

I was able to escape. Pude escaparme.

3. Have:

have + sustantivo = I have an apple. Tengo una manzana.

have + to + verbo = I have to go.

4.Want:

Sustantivos: I want water. Quiero agua.

To + infinitivo: I want to eat. Quiero comer.

Sustantivos: I like oranges. Me gustan las naranjas.

To + infinitivo: I love to sing. Me encanta cantar.

Gerundio de -ing: I hate waiting. Odio esperar.

6. Don’t mind:

Sustantivos: I don’t mind insects. No me molestan los insectos.

To + infinitivo: jamás. Eso es, ¡nunca jamás!

Gerundio de -ing: I don’t mind waiting. No me importa esperar.

Having + to + infinitivo: I don’t mind having to wait. No me importa tener que esperar.

7. Need:

Sustantivos: I need money.  Necesito dinero.

To + infinitivo: I need to sleep.  Necesito dormir.

Gerundio de -ing; jamás.

8. Listen:

She doesn't listen. Ella no escucha.

She doesn't listen to anybody. Ella no escucha a nadie.

Sí: Listen to music. Escuchar música.
No: Listen music. ¡Jamás!
Sí: Listen to me. Escúchame a mí.
No: Listen me. ¡Jamás!

The Spectacle / El espectáculo

What happened when Arley arrived at Michael Toora’s Halloween party and we’re sorry we couldn’t tell you about until belated today. Although everyone had heard about it at the party, it should have been confidential and we weren't sure we should publish until today.

Oberon

Arley! Why aren’t you wearing a costume? Come here and have a taste of my web. It´s both cotton candy and marshmallow.

¡Arley!

Arley

Oh, I’ve come as a ventriloquist. This is my doll.

Oh, he venido disfrazado de ventríloquo. Este es mi muñeco.

Titania

Why, the doll is Dr. Freud! What an original idea! Are you going to entertain us?

Arley

Yes, especially you and Dad. I don’t know if you are aware that this summer, while I was in London for the fairylympics, I took the opportunity to visit Dr. Freud at his home there.

As you all know, I have persistent nightmares that don’t allow me to live like the average fairy would and I felt it was time I learned what they were about, so last Christmas I asked the Magi for a consultation with Dr. Freud and the gift they gave me was a check to pay for it. But I also wanted to help Mr. Binky by giving him money to finance his school just as the parapsychologists Jemaniah and Minafer had suggested I do. I couldn’t help both myself and Mr. Binky, because all I could honestly have would be the amount Dr. Freud would charge to treat me. I decided that f it were small, I would use it to help myself. But if it turned out to be big, I would use it to help Mr. Binky.

So I asked Dr. Freud, who happened to be at home when I called, how much he would charge for a consultation. I thought it would be a lot of money because psychiatrists are said to be very expensive, but he hasn’t raised his fees since the year he died.

It was ridiculous to think I could finance Mr. Binky’s school with such a small sum. So I asked the good doctor for an appointment and he said he could receive me then and there because it was Sunday and on Sundays he doesn’t drop down to Hell to see his patients but it is ok for him to work. It seems most of his patients reside down there.

I lay down on his couch and told him all about my nightmares and he said it was all crystal clear to him. He said he had never seen as clear a case as mine since he had studied Hamlet’s, and he wouldn’t take my money because mine was a truly elegant case and he would like to use it as a classic example with my permission, of course.

And now, with your permission, I will allow Dr. Freud to explain to you himself what he has concluded about my nightmares.

The patient complains that he cannot sleep when in his home in Apple Island without having a recurring nightmare. He can only avoid having this nightmare when he sleeps in a car parked in the garage of a human. Now, to my knowledge, the Apple Island Housing Project – an ideal home for every member of the fairy family – is the basis of Queen Titania’s political policy. The queen intends to protect her subjects from human expansionism creating an ultra luxurious reserve on this island. Apple Island is the place where this lady wishes to keep and protect her people like a mother keeps and protects her child in her womb. And since the patient cannot rest peacefully in his mother’s womb – that is, in Apple Island - it is clear he doesn’t think he belongs there. He thinks he belongs in a human womb, as symbolized by the car and the garage of a human female, which is the place where he can rest in peace.

To get rid of my nightmare, I must find out where I really belong. When my nightmare begins, I find I am inside a box without a lid. The box is moving forward in space and I feel a little strange because it is dark and I don’t know where I am going.

I look up and suddenly I see something round and white that pours light on me, and I know it is the moon, but I don’t really know that it is in my nightmare because I haven’t seen it before, as if I had never been out at night before, and I am wondering what that thing is.

I sense – I know – there are people present near me, but they are silent. Very, very silent, advancing, moving forward in dead silence.

Suddenly, the silence shatters like glass. What I hear is crying. Not sad crying, but angry, hysterical crying, demanding crying that gets louder and louder and becomes utterly unbearable. Someone is in a rage, but doesn’t say, or can’t say why.

My ears hurt. And when I think I can’t bear to hear the wailing and bawling any longer, the box I am in comes to a halt with a screech and a jolt and a woman’s voice rises above the screaming and says ferociously: “Over my dead body will they take my child!” And I wake up bathed in cold sweat...

Mis oidos me duelen mucho.
