Swots Day 2013 / Día de los Empollones 2013

Happy Birthday, John!
¡Feliz cumpleaños, Juan!

In a world where certain people are ordering their kids to study only Maths, thinking that this is the only way to control it, we advise them to study everything. Doing the contrary would be like cutting off a leg, an arm or...a wing.

 Happy Swots Day, Swots!

¡Feliz día de los empollones, empollones!

No Name Day Party Yet / Todavía sin fiesta del nombre

Three days after a fairy child is born, its parents give a party. Friends and relatives gather to meet the new baby and to hear it say the name by which it wishes to be called.

Yes, the baby fairies choose their own name and they say it out loud because fairies can speak only a few minutes after being born. The average fairy child starts speaking as soon as it has been claimed by its parents. After a very little while in their company, it gets to trust them and tells them that important secret, its name.

For yes, names are important secrets in Fairyland. Fairies don’t tell just anyone their names, and if you don’t know a particular fairy’s name, it is because you are not formally acquainted with that fairy. Even if you have come to learn a fairy’s name from others, you must not call her or him by it until she or he tells it to you herself or himself. If he or she does, it means he or she trusts you, and recognizes your existence, admitting you into his or her world.

Baby fairies who are not claimed by parents grow up to be very secretive and mistrustful. Many of these feel only at home with the birds and the trees that dwell in their habitat. Some have never spoken their name out loud and never will. Yes, Name Day is a very special day for a little fairy. It is the fairy equivalent of a christening and the little fairy’s friends and family bring her or him wonderful gifts, some of which are so magical that they are invaluable.

Speak out, sweetie. Why don’t you trust your daddy? I´ve been sitting here with you for over a week doing nothing but ask you what your name is. Doesn’t all that attention deserve a little gratitude? Tell me your name, honey. If you do, we will give a spendid party for you and you will get loads of lovely presents.

Habla, bonita.

Come on, honey. Daddy is exhausted from sitting here night and day watching over you and waiting for you to say something. If you can’t think of any name yourself, all you have to do is listen and repeat. Come on. Listen and repeat one of these names. Lily? Li-ly. Rosie? Ro-sie. Daisy. Dai-sy.

Venga, nena. Venga. Escucha y repite. ¿Lirio? Li-ri-o. ¿Rosita? Ro-si-ta. Margarita. Mar-ga-ri-ta.

Come on, kid. Say something or I will tell the world they can call you Eustachiana. It’s not that bad a name if you think of it. Nice meaning. And it is the name of one of my grandmothers. Violet? Surely you like Violet. Little girls love Violet. Come on, darling. Vi-o-let. Listen, sweetie, it will do if you say Vi.

¿Violeta? Seguro que te gusta Violeta. A todas las niñas les gusta Violeta. Venga, carino. Vi-o-le-ta. Mira, nena, bastará con que digas Fe.

Titania

Why don’t you shut up? How can she get a word in if you don’t stop talking? Nothing like this has ever happened to us before. All my children spoke out their name two or three minutes after being first cuddled by us.

Heather’s first words were,“Thank you,” when we found her shivering in the heath under a harebell on a stormy night and covered her with a woolen scarf to protect her from the pouring rain.

Arley greeted us in verse when he spoke for the first time, sitting among larks and nightingales under the tree  Shakespeare planted.

And Thistle…she was like a fakir on a cardus benedictus, surrounded by buzzing bees under the sun, whispering little buzzing noises herself. She looked us straight in the eye and asked, “Are you going to take me home with you?” Of course we were.

¿Y Cardo?

All the others had a lot to say for themselves too. And as if it weren’t bad enough our new child remains mute, she has learned to fly before speaking. Now we´ll have to watch her every minute of the day and even put bars on the nursery windows, something we´ve never had to do before. How can we trust her if she doesn’t tell us her intentions?

Ibys.

Oberon / Oberón

Ibex? The kid said Ibex? We´ve had an economist?

¿Ibex? ¿La niña ha dicho Ibex? ¿Nos ha salido una economista?

Titania

Certainly not! Nonsense! Fairies don’t have pennywise babies. She said Iris. She wants to be called Iris.

¡De eso nada! ¡Memeces! Las hadas no tenemos bebés peseteros. Ha dicho Iris. Quiere que la llamemos Iris.

Heather / Brezo

Maybe she said Ivy.

Thistle / Cardo

Yes. She probably wants a name that will match with ours. We´re your role models, aren’t we, baby? Say Ivy.

Somos tus modelos a seguir, verdad, pequeña? Di Ivy. Di Hiedra.

Arley

Ibex doesn’t just have a financial meaning. It also means Pyrenean wild goat. I just looked it up in my pocket encyclopedia.

Titania

No way! My child isn’t going to be called Wild Goat just because her brother is a geek who goes everywhere with an encyclopedia in his pocket.

Arley

Alright, I haven’t said anything. And maybe the baby hasn’t either. She may just have burped. In any case, whatever she says, she must say it loud and clear in front of the guests at her Name Day party. If they don’t understand what she says, the event will be meaningless.

Vale, no he dicho nada.

Titania

Are you jealous or what? The child will do what she has to do perfectly.

Arley

I was only trying to understand her.

Sólo intentaba entenderla.

Mrs. Parry's Response / La Respuesta de la Sra. Parry

Mr. Binky has phoned his almost ancestress, Mrs. Parry, just as the Magi and the two fortunetellers suggested. And...

Mrs. Parry / Sra. Parry

It so happens that yes, I do know exactly what I can do to help you. Rest assured, my young and excessively modern relative. Your problem is as good as solved. As soon as tomorrow morning I will have obtained the money for your school, despite what I think of it. I´ll get in touch with you through one of my messenger pigeons if you don't mind, so be on the lookout for it. I get very nervous when I have to speak on the  fairy phone, many, many times great,  great nephew prime minister. I  only have one of these noisy aritfacts because my son insists on it.  He says I will want to know at once if he gets hit by a confounded car. How could I say no? You can imagine how happy I am the call was yours instead of due to that dismal motive.

¿Cómo me iba a negar?

underneath the beauty of the stars, / Bajo la hermosura de las estrellas
I strayed upon some maidens, / Tropecé con unas muchachas
who were strumming on their guitars. / Que tocaban sus guitarras.
A hula maid was dancing / Una chica hula estaba bailando
and I knew I´d found my paradise / Y supe que yo había encontrado mi paraiso,
So this is what I told her / Así que esto es lo que le dije
as I gazed into her eyes: / Mientras bebía en sus ojos:
Honolulu baby, where d´ya get those eyes / Niña de Honolulu, ¿dónde has sacado esos ojos
and the dark complexion / y esa tez morena
I just idolize? / que yo idolatro?
Honolulu baby, where did you get that style / Niña de Honolulu, ¿dónde has sacado esa gracia
and those pretty red lips / y esos labios tan bonitos y rojos
and that sunny smile? / y esa sonrisa luminosa?
When you start to dance / Cuando comienzas a bailar
your hula hips entrance. / Tus hula caderas embrujan.
Then you shake it up and down, / Entonces te empiezas a menear
you shake a little here, / Un poco aquí
you shake a little there, / Otro poco allí,
well, you got the boys going to town.
Honolulu baby, you know your stuff,/ Niña de Honolulu, sabes que loco estoy por tí,
Honolulu baby, don´t call your bluff.

Coffee at the Karaoke / Café en el Karaoke

Sir Mungo J. Binky

I´ve never been to a karaoke before. I´m not sure it’s a good idea for me to be seen here. I confess I feel like I should be wearing dark glasses like those on the sun in the headboard. I’m really a terribly shy person. Well, you said you had something so important to tell me that it would be worth my while to show up here. What is it?

Minafer

You are going to love this. We have your Christmas gift from the Magi and you are about to receive it.

Esto le va a encantar. Tenemos su regalo de reyes. Y usted está a punto de recibirlo.

Sir Mungo John

What? I don’t understand.

¿Qué? No entiendo nada.

Gemaniah / Jemanías

The Magi left your Christmas gift under our tree next to our shoes because they didn’t have your address. You weren’t on their list ever before and they misplaced the envelope of the letter you sent them what with all the stress they had with the blank check affair.

Sir Mungo John

You are saying the Magi got my letter and left me a gift care of you? But…when was that? February is coming to its close.

Minafer

Well, the gift the Magi left us was to spend the winter in Hawaii. Haven’t you noticed our gorgeous tans? But now we are back and ready to get down to business.

Sir Mungo John

I can’t believe this. The Magi listened to me and actually left me a blank check?

Well, man, it´s not exactly that, but this gift will serve your purpose. They’ve left you a phone number. Mrs. Parry’s, to be precise.

Parry.

Sir Mungo John

But I already have that madwoman’s phone number. Oh. I didn’t mean to say that. I meant to say that grand old lady’s number. You see, she happens to be my grandfather’s great aunt and I know her very well. Of course, there is no fairy she isn´t related to.

Uy, no he querido decir eso. De esa gran dama, he querido decir.

Well, use it, friend. Tell Fairyland's granny all about your plans for the future.

Sir Mungo John

But she is a reactionary of the first water. She trembles like an aspen leaf when she hears the word “future” and then throws seven fits in a row.

Minafer

Well, use that to your advantage, man. There's nothing easier to control than those who would control. If she’s already afraid of the future, half your work is done. Explain how useful it will be to her to cooperate with you in controlling what is to come. By the way, when you see Oberon, tell him not to worry about his new daughter. She’s a true blue fairy and will grow up to make him and Titania very proud of her. And now, the owner of this place, who happens to be me,  would love to have you honour us with a song.

Imperative / El imperativo

Michael
How good we all are at using the imperative! All you have to do is yell the base form of the verb. Look how nicely this Buckingham Palace guard orders some kids to GET OFF THE FENCE!

Teddy Roosevelt

And should you feel hoarse, you can speak softly and carry a big stick.

Mini prize for the first to say what Teddy and the big stick are all about.

We found the image of Teddy in Images from the Internet.

Birth of a fairy / El nacimiento de un hada

Titania

I´ll take off my slippers and put on a pair of boots so my feet won’t get cold. That will have to do. I´ve no intention of dressing. I´m going out in my robe and nightgown.

No pienso vestirme. Voy a salir en camisón y bata.

Oberon

What are you murmuring? Hey! What are you doing up? Where are you going
at this time of night? It’s a freezing winter night, crazy.

¿Qué estás murmurando? ¡Eh! ¿Por qué te has levantado?

Titania

I know there´s something out there I crave for.

Oh. Well, get into bed, I’ll go for whatever it is. What is it? You have no idea? Well, I’ll take the first out of place thing I see. I’m sure that will be it.

Vaya.

Titania

No, you’ll want to keep it.

No, que luego te lo quieres quedar.

In the garden…

En el jardín…

Oberon / Oberón

Look! A ladybug eating clover. How strange in winter! Eh, there´s a whole trail of them. Let´s follow it.

Mira.

Titania

There it is. I´ve found what we are looking for. It´s in the lotus tree.

Ahí está. He encontrado lo que buscamos. Está en el árbol de loto.

Oberon / Oberón

Yes, I´ve seen it too. It´s in the pink flower.Well, it´s ours because we are the first to see it. That´s the law. Why didn’t you tell me we were expecting a baby?

Titania

I ordered one from Lucina, but she didn´t answer me. Tonight I had a hunch.

Indignant Tree / Arbol indignado

Are you going to stay out here all night arguing? The baby is turning blue. Do you want her to be another blue fairy or what? Take her inside if you want her. If not, we´re ready to take her below. She’ll be better off next to our roots than with folks like you.

Titania

Calm down, we´ll take over right now. Oberon, you climb up the tree and bring the baby down and carry it home. I’ll lead the ladybugs to the greenhouse. They won’t freeze there and they will find something to eat.

Helen did come down / Elena sí que bajó

For February, a very romantic song: "Lady, Come Down."

Oscar Wilde

I wrote a poem about how the Trojan prince Paris felt while he was waiting in his galley for Greek Helen to show up for her date to elope with him. I also wrote the funniest play ever. Its title is "The Importance of Being Earnest." And it was first produced on Valentine's Day, 1895. Somebody made a film version of it, and my poem became a song that became a hit. How could it have been otherwise? I was involved. If you have any taste at all, you will listen to it and like it. Below the video are the lyrics and a bit of the dialogue from the scene of the film where the song is sang. There is also a Spanish translation of the lyrics and dialogue.

Below you can hear the song whole and better, but no images.

Algy: After you, dear boy. / Despues de ti, querido muchacho.
Jack: Oh, no, after you. / Oh, no, despues de ti.
Algy: No, no, no, do go first, / No, no, no, ve tú primero,
I'm not really good at the high bits.
Much better low / Mucho mejor las bajas
Jack: Oh, we'll see... / Oh, ya veremos…
Hm, hm, hm, hmm / Hm, hm, hm, hmm
Algy: 1, 2, and... / Uno, dos y…
Jack: The western wind is blowing fair / El viento del oeste sopla a favor
Across the dark Aegean Sea / Cruzando el oscuro mar Egeo
Algy: And at the secret marble stair / Y en la escalera secreta de mármol
My Tyrian galley waits for thee / Mi galera tiria te espera
Both / Ambos: Come down, the purple sail is spread / Bajad, la vela púrpura está extendida
The watchman sleeps within the town / El vigía duerme en el interior de la urbe
Oh, leave thy lily flowered bed / Oh, dejad vuestro floreado lecho de lirios
Oh, lady mine, come down / Oh, señora mía, bajad
Come down / Bajad
Lady come down / Señora, bajad
Come down / Bajad
Lady come down, / Señora, bajad
Oh, Lady come down / Oh, Señora, bajad
She will not come, I know her well / No vendrá, la conozco bien
Of lover's vows she hath no care / Nada le importan los juramentos de amantes
And little good a man can tell / Y poco es lo bueno que un hombre puede decir
Of one so cruel and so fair / De una tan cruel y tan bella
Jack: True love is but a woman's toy / El amor verdadero sólo es el juguete de una mujer.
They never know their lover's pain / Jamás perciben el dolor de sus amantes
Algy: And I who loved as loves a boy /Y yo, que he amado como un chiquillo,
Must love in vain / Tendré que amar en vano
Both / Ambos: Must love in vain / Tendré que amar en vano
Come down / Bajad
Lady, come down / Señora, bajad
Come down / Bajad
Lady, come down / Señora, bajad
Jack: I think your high notes may have damaged our chances, old boy. / You do want them to come down, don't you? / ¿Tú quieres que bajen o  que no?
Algy: Well, she is never going to come down if you're singing like that. / Pues ella no va a bajar jamás si cantas así. /You're completely out of tune / Desentonas de lo lindo.
Jack: How dare you! / ¡Cómo te atreves!
Algy: I'll take this bit. / Yo cantaré este trozo.
Jack:You leave this to me. / Déjame hacer a mi.
You go have a lie down, old man. / Tú vete a echar una cabezadita, tío.
Algy: No, I'll take this bit / No, yo cantaré esta parte.
Jack: Out of my way, I'm coming through / Fuera de mi camino, que voy a pasar.
Algy: Go easy, my dear fellow / Con calma, colega.
Jack: COME DOOOOOWWWNNN / BAJAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD
Come down / Bajad
Lady, come down / Señora, bajad
Algy: Don´t over do it, less is more / No te pases, menos es más.
Jack: Come down / Bajad
Lady, come down / Señora, bajad
Jack: That wasn't so bad, was it? / ¿No ha estado tan mal, verdad?
Hmmmmhmhhhhmmmmm
Algy: They’re not going to come down. / No van a bajar.
D'you think we should go up? / ¿Crees que deberíamos subir? Maybe we should go up. Tal vez deberíamos subir.
Jack: Algy, you’re always talking nonsense. / Algy, siempre estás diciendo bobadas.
Algy: Well, it’s better than listening to it. / Pues es mejor que escucharlas.
Jack: Lady, come down./ Señora, bajad.
Algy: Doo bee doo bee doo bee doo bee doo / Du bi du bi du bi du bi du
