She´s Valen. / Es Valen.

Alpin

I did well in confiscating the bag of leftover snacks and candy from those guys’ farewell party. We deserve some compensation. To have dealings with mortals has certainly proved to be a mistake. We´ve certainly established that. Nevertheless, they have rather decent candy. Almost as good as anybody else’s, I dare say.

 Arley

I don’t know how you can have the stomach to eat anything. I have a knot in my throat that won’t let me swallow even air. What trouble I´ve caused taking the baby for an outing! I´m especially sorry for the genuine buskers and other entertainers in the area. I´m sure we are being searched for and those poor people will be questioned over and over.

Menuda he liado sacando a pasear a la niña.

Gregoria

Don´t be a worry bug, Arley. Buskers are used to being mistrusted by everyone else. And nothing really serious has happened to those two morons who hurt your sister.

The fire I spat on them was special. It was illusive fire. It looks real, and if it burns you, you have all the symptons of authentic burning for about ten to fifteen minutes. But later everything fades away and boils down to nothing. No trace of burns of any degree is left. But, yes, those hooligans will have lost their hair for a while. However, it fell off as a result of the shock they suffered, and for no other reason.

Alpin

They´ve lost a lot of face bawling and yowling like babies. As for the rest, once they´ve realized nothing really bad has happened and that the fire was not for real, why, they´ll laugh at those sissies till they split their sides. By the way, why does your sister keep sniffing and smelling Gregoria? There´s nothing strange about her perfume.

Gregoria

There you are, my little princess! Oh, you are so cute I could eat you with kisses. With kids like you, it´s a privilege to be a nanny. You sure are brave. You didn´t make a sound while I dressed your wound. They say you haven´t got a name? Well, I have a name for you, treasure. I’m going to call you Valentine. Yes, indeed. You are so lustrous and robust and healthy.  And you are truly valiant!

No has dicho ni mu mientras te he curado la herida. Te voy a llamar Valentina. Di que sí. Que eres guapa y robusta y sanota.  ¡Y  que eres una valiente!

Valentine / Valentina

Oui, Gregoria. Je m’appelle Valentine.

Alpin

Hey! The autistic kid has spoken. And in French, yet. She told my musketeer her name. Hey, kid, that nanny is mine. Don´t you forget that!
.
¡Eh!

Arley

I can´t believe this. She likes your bodyguardess better than her family. Maybe we are stupid or something. I don´t feel so good right now.

Alpin

Of course you don't. You´re a regular Uncle Misery, chronically melancholic. You are always lamenting everything you do or did. Now, this sister of yours - it´s clear this girl is a sharp kid who needs to be watched.

Naturalmente.

Valentine / Valentina

Je cherche mon Ibys, Gregoria.

Gregoria

Ibys? Oh, my precios! Ahhh, I know what you want, little hussy. We´ll go for Ibys!

¿Ibys? ¡Ay, preciosa mía! Si ya sé lo que quieres, sinvergonzona. ¡Iremos a por Ibys!

A close encounter of the third kind / Un encuentro en la tercera fase

And sitting pretty up the tree where the busker left her, the nameless baby waits to be noticed by the folks from school.

And, boy, do they notice her!

¡Y vaya que sí, se fijaron!

 Kids / Chicos

Ahhhhh! A baby with wings! She must be from a circus. There are entertainers in the neighborhood.

¡Ahhhhh! ¡Una niña con alas! ¡Seguro que es del circo! Hay titiriteros en el barrio.

The last day of school is over. The bus that will take the last dozen of kids home for the last time this school year has just arrived.

Mr. Trickster / El Truqui

Bhaer, let me have some black insulating tape. I´m going to Alicante to see my mother-in-law. I want to alter the letters and numbers on my car´s license plate. There´s a spot on the road where they take photos of people who drive by too fast.

Bhaer, the Lame Bear / Don Donoso, El Oso Cojo

You... never fail to astound me, Peter.

Alucino contigo, Perico.

Louis, the Vindicative / Luis, El Reivindicativo

Why didn´t the school hire these entertainers for our end of the school year party?

Mr. Trickster / El Truqui

Do you know what a holiday is, Louis? You´re on one. We´ll find an answer for your question in the fall. Right now you can go home and hole up in your room with your mobile phone till September. Enjoy!

¡Disfruta!

Miss Stress on the Antepenultimate Syllable / La Esdrújula

I was never bored during the summer holidays. I woke up every morning bathed in the earliest sunlight. I had brekfast outdoors. I rode my bicycle. I went to the library for books to read. I helped my dad with his stamp collection. I went fishing and had picnics on the banks of a river with my friends. I went to the swimming pool twice a week. I watered the plants every evening and I gathered cherries and blackberries. I sewed some simple sundresses and bikinis for my little sister and me. I made cool gazpacho soup and lemonade and sugar cookies. My mum was very happy to have me at home because she loved me and enjoyed my company and because I helped her wash and hang the clothes. I ironed for her at night, because it was cooler, in a balcony under the moonlight. We went to the market and to the supermarket together. Times have changed, I suppose. But I had so much fun I still do all those things. Look, children, take the candy and snacks that were left over from the goodbye party with you. But don´t eat this stuff on the bus. Oh, good heavens! A little girl up a tree! We must bring her down immediately!

Bhaer, the Lame Bear / Don Donoso, El Oso Cojo

I’ll climb up and get her! But start calling the firefighters in case I fall or get stuck up there.

Sticks and Stones / El Palos y El Piedras

If we are to wait for that guy... Miz Stress has spoken. She must be brought down immediately.

Si hemos de esperar que ese.... La Esdrújula ha hablado. Hay que bajarla inmediatamente.

Nameless Baby / Bebé sin nombre

Ow!

¡Ay!

Good Kids / Niños buenos

What have you done? Poor thing! Have some cheese curls, cutie! Ignore those beasts. We´ll protect you.

¿Qué habéis hecho? ¡Pobrecita! Toma unos gusanitos, bonita. Ignora a esos bestias. Te protegeremos.

Sticks and Stones / El Piedras y El Palos

Shut up or we´ll lash you with the branches we broke off the trees.

Louis, the Vindicative / Luis, El Reivindicativo

You´ll hit us anyway. You don´t know how to do anything else. And you don´t want to learn.

Nos vais a atizar igual. No sabéis hacer otra cosa. Y no queréis aprender.

Mr. Trickster / El Truqui

This happened outside our school. All we have to do is alert the police. They can´t sue us. Hand me your mobile phone, Brigid.

Esto ha ocurrido fuera del centro. Cumplimos con avisar a la policía. No nos pueden demandar. Déjame tu móvil, Brígida.

Arley

Excuse me, sirs. I´ve come to fetch my sister. We´re leaving right now.

Perdón, señores. Vengo a llevarme a mi hermana. Ya nos vamos.

Louis, the Vindicative / Luis, El Reivindicativo

No, don´t go. Stay and do us a favor. Sue these idiots. Maybe they will learn a lesson.

No, no te vayas. Haznos un favor. Quédate y denuncia a estos impresentables. Puede que aprendan una lección.

Arley

I would love to stay and sue everybody, just as you suggest, but we really have to go. The show must go on, and all that.

Mr. Trickster / El Truqui

Street entertainers don´t like to have dealings with the law. That child is better off with her family even if they make her fly about for her bread. Let them go in peace.

But then the cavalry arrived. Gegoria Tenoria took charge and charged.

Pero en estas llegó la caballería. Y Gregoria Tenoria se hizo cargo y cargó.

Gregoria Tenoria

Roast, chatâigne!

¡Ásate, chatâigne!

Sticks / El Palos

¡Arrrgghhh!

Stones / El Piedras

Awesooooooome! The broad spat fire and your hair is in flames! I want to see their show!

Now that summer is coming up, you are probably thinking of keeping your shoes and wearing sandals instead. As you probably know, we Romans were fond of wearing sandals. My ghost still wears a pair of mine. They are quite comfortable, but they are easy to lose if they aren´t properly tied. Perhaps that is why there is a Spanish saying that goes: "As tied up as a Roman´s leg." This phrase is used to say that something is very difficult to undo.

Today I will tell you about a man who lost a sandal and how that complicated his life. I will tell you about the complications in other posts.

Once upon a time there was a man called Pelias who wanted to be king of a Greek city called Iolcus. The trouble was that Iolcus already had a king. This was Pelias´ half brother, Aeson. But that didn´t stop Pelias, who didn´t hesitate to attempt against the lives of Aeson and his friends and family.

Aeson was forced to flee from Iolcus and his wife had to send their little son to live with the centaur Chiron, who agreed to hide him. Chiron, who run a sort of boarding school for kids, educated the boy while he lived with him. And the boy grew up to be brave and strong and very well-instructed.  Oh! The boy´s name was Jason.

¡Oh! El niño se llamaba Jasón.

Meanwhile Pelias, who was reigning in Iolcus, felt very insecure and consulted all manner of fortunetellers to learn how it would go with him as usurper of this throne. An oracle prophesied that one day a man with one sandal would show up and that would signal the beginning of the end of Pelias´ reign.

When he was in his twenties, Jason decided it was time to travel to Iolcus and reclaim the throne for his father Aeson. And thither he went. And he went walking. To get there, he had to cross a river. And when he was about to do so, he saw a little old lady who was trying to do the same. He didn´t know this, but she was the goddess Hera in disguise. He saw that this was going to be very difficult for her to do and he felt sorry for her and decided to help her. He carried her across the river, but while he was doing this and because the currents were strong, he lost a sandal.

Before I proceed with my story I want you to click on Aries, the Golden Fleece, if you don´t remember what that is. I told you that story some time ago.

Somebody told Pelias that there was a fellow with one sandal who wanted to have a word with him. For some reason beyond my understanding, Pelias did not kill Jason right then and there, not even when Jason told him what he had come for. Instead, he said, "I´ll return the throne when you bring me the golden fleece." For another reason also beyond my powers of understanding, Jason didn´t realize that Pelias was mocking him. He took what his uncle said seriously and left to fetch the Golden Fleece, which was easier said than done. One of those things that happen. And things did happen when Jason went for the fleece, and I will tell you about some of them in subsequent posts. Good night, that´s enough for today.

Can you or I or anyone know (¿Podemos tú o yo o cualquiera saber)
How oats, peas, beans, and barley grow?

First the farmer sows his seed. (Primero el granjero siembra sus semillas.) Stands erect and takes his ease. (Se erige y se relaja)

And turns around to view his lands. (Y se vuelve para contemplar sus tierras.)

The music must go on and on / Que siga la música

The Muses / Las Musas

We´re getting real tired of being bullied everywhere. What do Philistines have against joy?

Our most musical friends have asked us to sign a petition so that Music will not be removed from the secondary school curriculum. We love music and want to support this cause. They have also asked us to publish an address where readers of our blogs, webpages, etc. can also sign in favor of Music if they should choose to.

http://www.coaem.org/comunicado-ante-la-lomce/manifiestoconjuntodelasensenanzasmusicalesydelosprofesionalesdelamusicacontralalomce/famosos-contra-la-lomce

The Magic Pencil / El lapicero mágico

Hovering in the clouds over a school bus, Harpagophytum reveals his intentions.

 Harpagophytum / Harpagofito

You don’t be scared, doll. I don’t mean to exploit you. I don’t approve of child labor. I only kidnapped you to remove you from the influence of those rotten kids you were with. You don’t want to grow up to be rude and mean like them, love.

Tú no te asustes, muñeca.

But the life of a wandering minstrel can be tough for a kid. You see that school bus down there? There’s a school nearby. I’ll leave you there. They are sure to take you in. They’ll prune your wings, but you´ll learn a lot and when you are grown up I’ll come and fetch you and if you like, I’ll turn you into a great entertainer. I´ll be your fairy godfather. Don’t think I don’t know people, because I do. I´ll be able to do a lot for you.

Now, I don´t want anyone to say you were abandoned without anything but the clothes on your back, so you can have this pencil I always carry with me. It looks kind of used up, but the truth is it is everlasting. And you can do graffiti with it even on the clouds.

Meanwhile, back at the field where the children were having breakfast before the kidnapping, Gregoria Tenoria finds the charge she has rather reluctantly been seeking for.

Gregoria Tenoria

There you are, you little ruffian. What are you up to out here? I don’t see anything worth eating. Aller vite. Let´s return home.

Aller vite. Volvamos a casa.

Alpin

Not so fast. Alpin's new sister has been kidnapped by one of those alternative types. I wasn´t thinking of helping him find her because I don´t think she's worth the effort, but now that you have showed up, maybe we should try. I'll enjoy watching you give that jerk his comeuppance.

No tan deprisa.
