Birthday Gifts and Knit Bombers / Regalos de Cumpleaños y Knit Bombers

Michael Toora

I´m so tired this year! All I want to do is sleep all summer. This hammock is so comfortable. Thank you for it, Garth. You´re an artist. Zzzzzzzzzzz!

Gracias, Garth. Eres un artista.  ¡Zzzzzzzzz!

Alpin

What is the meaning of this? Get up off that hammock and start celebrating your birthday this minute, you lazy bum!  It´s not just that I want some cake. I need you to do something for me.

Michael Toora

Too late. My birthday was yesterday. And only our cousin Garth remembered it.

Demasiado tarde. Mi cumpleaños fue ayer. Y solo nuestro primo Garth se acordó.

Alpin

No, it´s not too late! It must still be your birthday in New Zealand or somewhere in the universe. If you hurry, you can make it.

Listen, Cousin Michael, do you remember how the judges failed in your favor during the Curmudgeon kidnapping trial and condemned Magpie to let you have your pick from her stores and warehouses for not having duly reported she had your lost leprechaun shoe in her power?

Escucha, primo Michael.

Michael

Vaguely.

Vagamente.

Alpin

Did you ever get down to choosing something? You leave everything for the perpetual tomorrow, so chances are you haven´t.

¿Llegaste a elegir algo?

Michael

That´s right. I haven´t.

Es cierto. No lo he hecho.

Alpin

Well, give yourself a decent birthday present and go choose something now. Only the things one chooses for one´s self make perfect gifts.

Have a look at this pencil I have here. There are only four others like it in the world. And I happen to be wanting them. They say there is nothing you can´t find at Magpie's. So she is bound to have one or two or more of these.

I want you to choose those pencils for yourself and then give them to me. Understood?

¿Entendido?

Michael

That´s not the way it works. You don´t go get a fairy gift the minute you receive a voucher for one.

You wait until you know what you really need and then demand it. There could be an emergency and we might desperately need something only she has got.

Alpin

I have an emergency now. And you know I can be awfully insistent. With the stress on awfully.

Are you getting up or do I start screaming so you won´t get a wink of sleep in what´s left of the summer? If it´s really just that you don´t want to get up, you can sign a paper authorizing me to choose for you.

Garth, the Pooka / Garth, el Puca

If you disturb the peace of this place, I will come out of the bushes and stab my knitting needles into your eyes and roast them like marshmallows, you little stinking fart.

Arley

Eh… Alpin, your cousin Michael is right. He has to wait for the right moment. And Magpie is a bad person, unsafe to have dealings with. If we go see her, she´ll learn that we have a magic treasure and she might end up stealing it from us instead of us getting hers.

Plus I don´t think we need to see her to find the pencils. Mr. Ominous said to follow the white wall. I bet they have been lying out there by Owl Wood Manse all the time. We´d better hurry and return there before someone else beats us to it and claims them.

Michael

I think you frightened them away. How nice of you! Thank you again, Garth. You are so kind when you want to be. Your knit bombing is looking really pretty. And the hammock is the most useful gift I have ever received. Zzzzzzzz!

Creo que les has espantado. ¡Qué gusto!  Gracias otra vez, Garth. Zzzzzzzzz!

Garth

I am always kind. But people who disturb the peace of quiet places enrage me. Especially if they do it out in the country at night. They seem to think there is no one sleeping out there to bother. Well, there is. You are tired because you work like a human, Michael. You do things no fairy should. All we should do is protect nature and preserve peaceful rural environments. In fact, that´s all humans should do too.

Yo siempre soy amable.

Don Quijote:

What´s the weather like? What is it like outside?

¿Qué tiempo hace? ¿Qué tiempo hace ahí fuera?

Sancho Panza

Well, it´s not precisely raining cats and dogs. I would say that today we could learn to fry eggs on the sidewalk. But if you prefer, we could review weather vocabulary. And we can learn a little about Japanese art while we are at it.

Alpin and Arley have found a fine wall to do some graffiti on. It encircles the ruins of old, abandoned Owl Wood Manse, located, according to some, just outside Minced Forest but indisputably within it, according to others.

Alpin

What do you think? Is this graffito as good as my others?

Arley

I like it. But couldn´t we do something aside from your logo for a change? We always do the same word over and over.

Me gusta.

Alpin

No. We´ll cover the whole wall with my logo. Your sister gave me the magic pencil so I get to decide what gets done. And that will always be my logo, so everyone will know the work is mine.

Arley

My sister lent you the pencil. She didn´t give it to you. She can´t do that. The busker that gave it to her when he left her near the mortal school said he would return for her one day and he might want it back. After all, it is a magic treasure. And… are you sure you want everyone to know you are doing graffiti? If you were mortal, the police would have arrested you by now.

 Minafer Ominous

Hello, children. Brightening up Mr. Binky´s dull wall, eh? That´s pretty. I hope we can get to keep it.

Arley

This wall is Mr. Binky´s? We thought it didn´t belong to anybody. He doesn´t live here, does he?

¿Esta pared es del Sr. Binky? Creíamos que no era de nadie. Él no vive aquí, ¿verdad?

Minafer Ominous / Minafer el Ominoso

Mr. Binky has expropriated this house in ruins and its gardens to build his new school here.

Alpin

Has he paid a fortune for this junk? My nephew gave him a lot of dough. I´d like to know what he’s doing with it.

They say he hasn`t paid a cent. He has expropriated this place, but since nobody knows who the owner is, he hasn’t had to indemnify.

Alpin

That’s much worse than I thought. He must be keeping the money for himself if he doesn’t need to spend it. Speaking of dull walls, this is being a rather dull summer. I´m tired of doing nothing but graffiti. You think you know everything, Ominous. Have you any idea what we could to do liven things up?

Well, you´ve a magic treasure there, I see. That pencil can paint and draw almost anything you are capable of imagining. There are only five like it in fairyland. You could either use it to do something very different, like really cool graffiti in a truly stunning place. Or you could try to find the other four if this one isn´t enough for you. They say that whoever has all five could cover the whole sky with graffiti in less than a night. Imagine the effect the next morning. Something tells me there are magic treasures in the air here. I would check this place out for them. Follow the white brick wall, kids.

Alpin

There you go speaking like an oracle again, Ominous. You really have to do something about your style. It´s very annoying.

Arley, we´re leaving. I just remembered something.

Arley

‘Bye, Mr. Minafer Ominous. Thanks for your suggestions.

Adios, Sr. Minafer Ominoso. Gracias por sus sugerencias.
