The dialogue of the man with the power / El diálogo del hombre del poder

We don´t know where it first came from, but we first heard it on TV, when watching a film called "The Bachelor and the Bobby-soxer. " Hollywood´s most elegant male, Cary Grant, said "You remind me of a man," and that was how it all started for us. It´s one of those catchy, nonsense things that someone says and everyone else ends up saying too. It is neverending because where it stops, it starts anew. That´s the neverending curse of the man with the power of hoodoo. Below you have the film version of it.

You remind me of a man. / Me recuerdas a un hombre.
What man? / ¿Qué hombre?
The man with the power. / El hombre con el poder.
What power? / ¿Qué poder?
The power of hoodoo.
Hoodoo? / ¿Quién hace? (¿Judú?)
You do. / Tú haces.
I do? / ¿Yo hago?
Remind me of a man. / Que recuerde a un hombre.
What man? / ¿Qué hombre?

This works out because hoodoo and who do are pronounced the same in English.

Esto funciona porque hoodoo y who do (quienes hacen) se dicen igual en inglés.

There is a song version you can hear in the video below. And further below you have the lyrics of this song and their meaning in Spanish.

You remind of a man. / Me recuerdas a un hombre.
(What man?) / (¿Qué hombre?)
Oh, the man with the power./ Oh, el hombre con el poder.
(What power?) / (¿Qué poder?)
Oh, the power of voodoo / El poder del vudú.
(Who do?) / (¿Qué hace?)
Oh, you do, you do / Oh, tú haces, tú haces
(Do Do what?) / (¿Yo hago?)
You remind of a man. / que recuerde al hombre.
(What man?) /(¿Qué hombre?)
Yeah, the man with the power. / El hombre del poder.
(What power?) /(¿Qué poder?)
Yeah, the power of voodoo / Sí, el poder del vudú.
(Who do?) / (¿Qué hace?)
Yeah, you do, you do / Sí, tú haces, tú haces...
(Do what?) / (¿Qué hago?)

Oh, we could take 'em out of this rex, / Podríamos sacarles de este embolado.
Save us from the man with the hex. / Salvadnos del hombre del maleficio.
Save us from his evil curse, / Salvadnos de su nefasta maldición.
It's gonna get bad, yeah, it's gonna get worse.

Uhhh, hocus pocus alakazaam, / Uy, hocus pocus, alakazam,
Save us from that evil man, / Salvadnos de ese hombre malvado.
With hairy legs and heavy feet, / Con piernas peludas y pies pesados,
He cracks up, baby, even as he creeks. /

You remind me of a man / Me recuerdas a un hombre.
(What man?) /(¿Qué hombre?)
Yeah, the man with the power / El hombre del poder.
(What power?) / (¿Qué poder?)
Oh, the power of voodoo / Oh, el poder del vudú.
(Who do?) /(¿Qué hace?)
Yeah, you do, you do / Sí, tú haces, tú haces...
(Do what?) / (¿Qué hago?)

You remind me of a man. / Me recuerdas a un hombre
(What man?) /(¿Qué hombre?)
Yeah, the man with the power / El hombre del poder.
(What power?) / (¿Qué poder?)
Oh, the power of voodoo / Oh, el poder del vudú.
(Who do?) / (¿Qué hace?)
Yeah, you do, you do / Sí, tú haces, tú haces...

uh ah, voodoo / uy, ay, vudú
uh ah, voodoo / uy, ay, vudú
uh ah, voodoo / uy, ay, vudú
uh ah, voodoo / uy, ay, vudú

Save us, save us / Salvadnos, salvadnos

Save us from the man with the hex, / Salvadnos del hombre del maleficio.
With bulging eyes and a bogey leg, / Con ojos saltones y una pata de demonio

Save us from the man with hex. / Salvadnos del hombre del maleficio.

Oh, save us, save us / Oh, salvadnos, salvadnos,
(Save us, save us) / (Salvadnos, salvadnos,)

The talking wall versus the man with the power / El muro parlante contra el hombre con el poder

When he was about to enter Owlwood Manse through the hole in its  garden wall, Arley suddenly realized that the said wall was speaking directly to him with graffiti that kept appearing on it. Why, he could hold a conversation with the wall!

 Talking Wall /Muro Parlante

Arley

I´ve heard this on TV. Now I have to ask: What man?

Esto lo he oído en la tele. Ahora yo tengo que contestar preguntando: ¿Qué hombre?

Talking Wall / Muro Parlante

Arley

What power?

¿Qué poder?

Talking Wall / Muro Parlante

Arley

Hoo doo?

¿Quién hace?

Talking Wall / Muro Parlante

Arley

I do?

¿Yo hago?

 Talking Wall / Muro Parlante

Talking Wall / Muro Parlante

 Alpin

Arley, are you coming in or what? We´ve already searched half the garden. What are you doing out there? Are you chicken? Scared to come in?

Arley, ¿vas a entrar o qué? Ya hemos registrado medio jardín. ¿Qué estás haciendo ahí fuera? ¿Eres gallina? ¿Te da miedo entrar?

Arley

Guess what? I´m talking to a wall.

¿Sabes qué? Estoy hablando con un muro.

Alpin

No, you´re not. I am. Listen to me and come in here once and for all. That´s enough reading stupid graffiti. We´ve enough with one mad reader! Come in here and start searching. And you´d better leave no stone unturned!

¡Entra aquí dentro y ponte a buscar!

Nauta´s Mini Mythology: Medusa and her sister Gorgons / Mini Mitología de Nauta: Medusa y sus hermanas gorgonas

The Gorgons / Las Gorgonas

Nauta

Where have I been? I was making my way here in July on a drawing of the ship Argo when a wind blew me off it and the ship was lost in the wide sea. The illustrator rotundly refused to make a new drawing and for the present cannot be convinced to the contrary. So I have no choice but to make my appearance here today in the company of the Gorgons, three ladies who have good reason to be very illtempered. They wouldn´t wait for me to introduce them and insisted on walking into the post first, hoping in this manner to take you by surprise and perhaps turn you into stone.

¿Qué dónde me había metido?

This is no joke. Of these three sea demons, whose names are Medusa, Sthenno and Euryale, the first has the power to turn to stone those who look straight into her eyes. Which is why our illustrator has taken the precaution to paint them with their eyes well shut.

What happens when the blood of a Gorgon is shed? Well, this blood petrifies and turns into coral. That, according to mythology, is how the corral reefs were formed. They are one of the wonders of this planet, although dangerous for those who sail the seas.

We will have more to say about the Gorgons some other time, when we speak of a fellow called Perseus.Today I say goodbye with a warning. If you are lucky enough to be on holiday near the sea, keep away from the jellyfish. They are Medusa´s godchildren  and in Spanish they are named after her. Like their godmother, they don´t hesitate to harm those that come too close to them.

Don Quijote

Whoever has a comic has a treasure.

Quien tiene un tebeo tiene un tesoro.

Alpin

What´s that you murmured about a treasure?

Don Quijote

While studying the list of vocabulary on jobs, professions and occupations my attention was drawn to that of super hero. Michael has lent me all these comics so I can learn what a super hero is. I’m delighted with them. I´m going to spend what is left of the summer reading comics. Oh! What I would give to be a super hero! Flying in the sky, jumping over skyscrapers, cavorting on the rooftops! And always to do good! It´s like being a knight errant but with a bit of science in it. Could an unbeliever like Samson Carrasco object to something this scientific? And I wouldn´t be breaking my promise to refrain from being a knight errant. Nobody ever asked me not to be a super hero.

Arley

Why don´t you come with us? There´s a hole in the wall you are leaning on and we mean to pass through it and search the ruins of the house it surrounds for magic treasures. We´ve been warned this could be dangerous, so, the more the safer.

Vinny / Vicentico

Yes, it´s dangerous. We Leafies are well aware that visitors aren´t welcome in the manse.

Alpin

We´re not visitors. We´re trespassers. And there´s no sign that says no trespassing.

No somos visitas. Somos allanadores.

 Vinny / Vicentico

You can tell that to the man with the sack. I´m sure he´ll see things your way.

Arley

There´s a man with a sack in there? Like the bogeyman?

Vinny / Vicentico

We call him Uncle Jumbisack. My cousin Johnsie fell through one of the chimneys of the manse one dark evening. Tell them how it went with you, Johnsie.

Johnsie /Juanico

I wish I could. I can´t remember a thing, but I know for sure something dreadful occurred. After my fall, I woke up in a nest hanging from a eucalyptus tree somewhere in the tropic of Capricorn. It took me months to get back home. But I consider myself lucky. I don´t know how, but I´m sure I eluded a sad fate. Although I can´t remember what happened, I have nightmares about sacks that are full of moving, writhing things to this day.

Don Quijote

All the more reason to barge in there! That sinister and unfriendly creature owes everyone civilized an explanation! And if he is up to something dastardly, we´ll invite him to put a stop to it. Oh, how excited I am! I’m about to return to my chivalrous ways, but this time with the blessing of Science. However, there are two details I must see to first. I will need a mask. This scarf will have to do for now. And I will also need a new name. It would defeat the purpose of the mask if I were to act under my authentic name. “Super Quijano” won´t do because I would be giving myself away. “Mancha Man” is so good that somebody is probably already using it.

“Super Quijano” me delataría.

  Alpin

Call yourself “The Raving Reader.”It suits you best. And that´s enough chitchat for today. Let´s get this done right now. Ready, get set, go, my valiant bookworms!

Llámate “El Lector Liante.” Es de lo más adecuado. Y basta de cháchara. Hagamos esto de una vez. ¡Adelante, mis valientes ratones de biblioteca!

For those who are reading this post in Spanish and because of Michael's comment below: /
