Builders / Constructores

Lonefellow and Ty Shyboy / Solitario y Tyrone Apocado

Armed with a shotgun and a large can of Shyboy ointment, which aside from being dangerous because of its narcotic properties is highly inflammable, Lonefellow Shyboy heads for the office of the Prime Minister bent on having his property restored to him. He travels in the filthy, tacky van of his nephew, Ty, the graffiti artist, whom he has enlisted for this battle with the promise of mentioning him again in his will.

Meanwhile, totally unaware that war has been declared against him, Mr. Binky bitterly complains that September is almost gone once again without his having been able to inaugurate his cherished dream school.

He has spent the summer dealing fruitlessly with builders. First he contacted the Earl of Pearl, prizewinning manufacturer of the ideal homes in Apple Island. But the man rejected Mr. Binky´s offer with these words:

The Earl of Pearl / El Conde de la Perla

I can barely build ideal houses for all the fairy children that are being born. I hate to have to say this, but I can´t accept your tempting offer. However, I would be lying if I didn´t also say that I am not sure it is a good idea to have dealings with humans instead of to flee from them.  Yes, I know that you think the Apple Island Project is pure escapism. But for those of us who believe in it, it is our only hope.

After many a failed attempt, Mr. Binky was finally able to sign a contract with an aged  Romanian master builder who boasted of having taught the trade to the great Magister Manole. This fellow never once showed up at Owl Wood Manse in the whole summer, for which reason not even the demolition of the old building was accomplished.

When Mr. Binky, impatient and stressed, phoned him to ask what was happening or rather why nothing was happening, the man said he would visit the site once he had gathered all the material he needed to build the school. After every one of the Prime Minister´s calls he would send a sack full of sand or a bag of nails to the Ministry to appease Mr. Binky, and this went on all summer. When Mr. Binky saw autumn was right around the corner, he decided to show up personally at the builder´s office to put pressure on him. The builder said he lacked an indispensable element without which he could not begin to work. He couldn´t find a soul for the building.

Master Builder Viorel Wadim / Maestro Arquitecto Viorel Wadim.

A building is like a person. A body cannot stand up without a soul in it. It collapses because it is dead. The same would happen to your school. It could never hold itself up. We have searched everywhere and even published ads in the fairypapers but we have been unable to find a single fairy batty enough to want to be locked up forever within your little school. We have only one alternative left us. But I would only do this under your responsibility. Don´t count on me to do it if the state doesn´t authorize it. We could kidnap a mortal and annex him to the building.  They have  souls, too, you know?

Sir Mungo John Binky

But…What are you saying? Certainly not! I can´t begin to build a school meant to reconcile fairies and humans by walling up some unfortunate mortal within it.

Viorel Wadim

Well, then it´s up to you. I can´t do more than this.

Pues usted me dirá. Yo otra cosa no puedo hacer.

It was clear that Mr. Binky had to resort to another kind of school of architecture. But which? He had already tried to negotiate with all the ones he was acquainted with. But it is when it is darkest that it dawns, and since he had been good and refused to wall up anybody, the greatest  storyteller herself appeared to Mr. Binky to inspire him.

Scheherazade

Speak to the genie of Aladdin´s lamp. He can build a palace in only one night.

Mr. Binky

They speak truly, those that call you wise.

Con razón te dicen sabia.

Scheherazade

I´m also practical, which is why I am going to ask you for a commission. I need to buy a lot of new digital books for my digital library.

The genie Batish Afsoon / El genio Batish Afsún

I´ll build in only one night anything you ask me for. You´ll be able to make your pupils start school before September is up like the impatient mortals do instead of listening to Nature and Good Sense and starting school after Columbus Day. Your school will face the East and have gardens and fountains with lions, and orange tree courtyards everywhere about. I will build it in nothing less than Makrana marble, like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul´s Cathedral and Buckingham Palace in London. I myself will supply the materials. You can return all the screws you have here to your ex-builder. My name is Batish Afsoon, but as soon as you formalize our contract by polishing the magic lamp with one of those metal-cleaning cloths you can buy at dimestores, you will be able to call me Abdi, which means “my servant.”

Mungo J. Binky

And I can get to hear you say that my wish is your command? I´ve always dreamt of hearing that said to me.

But before Batish Afsoon could reply…

Declaration of War / Declaración de guerra

As Arley told Mr. Shyboy what the wall needed him to know, the vet began to change color. If he had been red before, now he was mostly purple. Smoke seemed to pour out of his nostrils and rise from the crown of his head, and when he spoke, he roared.

Over my dead body!

 ¡Sobre mi cadáver!

Much concerned and worried about his new acquaintance´s health, Don Alonso advised him to take it easy.

Don Alonso

Please, calm down, sir! For your own good sake! Problems like this can be solved by talking them over. I suggest you ask the prime minister for an audience as soon as possible.

But Mr. Shyboy grew even angrier. So angry in fact that he now looked like the bogeyman the Leafies had suspected he was. When he began to speak again, it was if toads and snakes were leaping out of his mouth instead of words.

Mr. Lonefellow Shyboy / Sr. Solitario Apocado

I ask that madman for an audience? Sure, any day now! He´d better get ready! His relatives, hell´s devils´s, had better find he has confessed before they come to take him! He doesn´t know who he is messing with, that humanoid agent of the mortals! This means WAR

While the wall showed its effusive gratitude towards Arley, Alpin got caught up in the hysteria and began shouting too.

Alpin

Look what you´ve done, Arley! You had to go and tell on poor Mr. Binky, you busybody! You´ve started a war and there you stand as fresh as a new born lettuce leaf! Have you no shame or measure?

As Alpin insulted Arley, Arley began to change color, getting, in fact, as green as a new born leaf.

Arley

Me? Start a war? The wall had a right to be heard! Everyone does! It´s called freedom of speech!

¿Yo? ¿Empezar una guerra? ¡La pared tenía derecho a expresarse! ¡Todo el mundo lo tiene! ¡Se llama libertad de expresión!

Alpin

Mr. Binky could have built his school without this guy´s even noticing. That´s how out of it this fellow is. But you had to go and squeal. You had to go pay attention to nonsense written on a wall. Who told you you could go about reading what is written on walls?

Arley

You do graffiti, Alpin, and you don´t want me to read it? Don´t you want your graffiti read?

Alpin

My graffiti is naturally wonderful and nobody can help reading it. Eyes are drawn to it however reluctant they may be to read at all. You read everything you set your eyes on, no matter how offensive or banal. You have no taste and no criteria.

This stupid adventure you took me on is over. Take me home this minute, Arley. I’m starving so I´m losing my eyesight. I can´t get home on my own! I couldn´t see my way there! Get me out of here before I drink all the Shyboy potion at hand and become seriously ill. That will be your fault too!

Llévame a casa ahora mismo, Arley.

Arley

Ok, I´ll help you, though I´m not too happy about having to do it. But first I have to speak to the wall. Or you might later say we´ve wasted the afternoon.

On a Schoolroom / Sobre un aula

The Schoolroom by Francesco Bergamini / El aula - Francesco Bergamini

Fergus

Where did you find this?

¿Dónde has encontrado esto?

Somewhere among Images from the Internet. What do you think of it?

Por ahí entre Imágenes de Internet.  ¿Qué te parece?

Fergus

The umbrella is open because there are leaks in the ceiling?

Michael

I´m not sure. I believe there are leaks in the umbrella. Maybe that kid is hyperactive.

No estoy seguro. Creo que hay goteras en el paraguas. Puede que ese niño sea híperactivo.

Fergus

Do you think the teacher looks happy?

¿Crees que el docente parece feliz?

Michael

Well, there are only nine kids in class. That should make the teacher happy.

Fergus

What are you saying? This might be a private school. I don´t think that fellow is making much money. There were more kids in the average family back then than there are in this classroom.  The kids do look attentive, though, don´t they?

Michael

I don´t think more would fit round the brazier. I think they are doomed to have varicose veins if they don´t die of pneumonia.

Fergus

Well, all the kids seem to be paying attention. Is it studying used to pay back then?

Michael

Oh, Dad! To judge from the teacher´s umbrella...well, maybe what it used to be was fun.

Fergus

You´re such an optimist. Will you ask your pupils to comment on this picture?

The Parafairy / El Parahada

Once they entered the garden of Owlwood Manse, Alpin, Arley and Alonso began to search it, the first two seeking magic pencils and the last looking forward to confronting the sinister bogeyman with the sack.

Alpin

Well, what? Spotted any pencils?

Bueno, ¿qué? ¿Se divisan lápices?

Don Alonso

I’ve spotted…headstones? Come here, lads, and tell me if I am seeing right.

Yo he divisado…¿lápidas?

Alpin

Don´t tell me we´re going to have to dig tombs up to find the treasures, like Egyptian grave robbers. I can´t do that. It´s not against my principles.  It´s that I’m famished and about to faint.  I’ve had nothing to eat in quite a while now, so you guys will have to do it by yourselves. There are spades in the garden shack. I noticed them while I was searching it.

Pues yo no puedo hacerlo.

Arley

I don´t think these graves are old enough for us to treat them like an archeological find. I wouldn´t touch them. The most I might do is walk around them and see if there is a pencil lying somewhere about. And if I did see one, I´m not sure I would have the nerve to pick it up and take it from a place like this.

Alpin

The old codger will do it. We´ll tell him this is an Iberian archeological site. He might believe us. He is so worried about not knowing what he is seeing.

Don Alonso

I´m seeing a man with a sack. Is that so?

Estoy viendo un hombre con un saco. ¿Es así?

Alpin

Yaaaaaaah! Uncle Jumbisack himself!

¡Ayyyyy! ¡El mismísimo tío del jumbisaco!

Arley

Where? Where?

¿Dónde? ¿Dónde?

Alpin

Right there, digging a grave before our eyes. I can´t believe it! We caught the monster in the act! And in broad daylight! I want out! Where was the hole?

Don Alonso

Calm down, children. The last time I saw something that looked like that sack it turned out to be a wineskin instead of a giant. This man´s face is quite red. He´s probably fond of a drink or two. We shall be very scientific and verify this! Hey there, sir! You of the jumbisack!

Tranquilizados, muchachos.

Hey! Careful what you prick with that sword! Some of us are mortal! I mean I myself and the lady I´m carrying in the sack.

¡Eh!

Don Alonso

You villain! Free that lady at once!

¡Villano! ¡Soltad inmediatamente a esa dama!

Uncle Jumbisack / El tío del jumbisaco

It´s a she cat, but fine, I´ll release her. It would be better if I did it deeper in the forest. She´s feral and lives there. I´m neither a monster nor a wino. I´m a veterinarian with cuperosis. But why am I telling you all this? You should be telling me why you are invading my property.

Pilar, the feral cat / Pilar, la gata salvaje

Meow? / ¿Miau?

Don Alonso

Mr. Jumbisack, we have come to enquire about whatever is going on in this place. One of your neighbors had a most unpleasant experience when he accidentally fell through a chimney in this house.

I see. I suppose you are speaking of a leafy that landed in a pot of my oil. Fortunately, though I had not removed it from the fireplace, it was already quite cool. It serves to cure wounds that would otherwise be mortal. But not without making the patient fall into a deep stupor, so profound that when he comes out of it he rarely remembers what has been happening for a day or so. The leafy did not rub it on. He swallowed it through the mouth and nose while swimming in it. I would have succored him if he hadn´t flown off like a bat out of hell.

By the way, I am not Mr. Jumbisack. I am Mr. Lonefellow Shyboy. My grandfather was Reverend Thomas Shyboy, which is why people call this house a manse, though  it is no such thing, for he was retired when he built it.

Por cierto, no soy el Señor Jumbisaco. Soy Lonefellow Shyboy.

My father, Mr. Hermeticus Shyboy, only left this house once after he first entered it and that was to fetch his bride, my mother, Miss Lorna Pineaway.  They had been corresponding by mail for years and were as in love as they were misanthropic. They are buried in the garden along with my grandparents and other family members.

And I was not digging a fresh grave. I was planting matico, also known as soldier´s weed. I am telling you all this instead of aiming my shotgun at you because I hope to be left well alone once your curiosity is satisfied.

I use this sack to transport wounded creatures I chance upon in the forest. Once I have cured them, I return them to their habitat. I like animals better than people, be they mortal or immortal. And, yes, I am a parafairy.

Alpin

A what?

¿Un qué?

Mr. Lonefellow Shyboy / El Señor Solitario Apocado

A parafairy is a human who would have preferred to have been born a fairy person and who in consequence lives like one, and who may get to develop some magical skills out of sheer insistence.

My grandfather was a paraghost. He built this house so he could haunt it, because he was afraid he might never be able to haunt a place once he was dead. He had always wanted to be a practicing ghost after passing away but became a bit afraid he might not get to be one at all after having read Mr. Charles Darwin. Of course, he is now one, though it isn´t here he usually does his haunting. He prefers his old parsonage for that purpose, and there he wanders at will.

And by now your curiosity should be satisfied, so I will ask you to please leave.

 Arley

Sir, I can´t leave until I deliver a message I have for you. But before I tell it you and if you don´t mind, I would like to know if  Pinky´s tomb is of pink marble and if matico is what I call soldier´s herb. Yes? Thank you. Your garden wall wants me to tell you that the Prime Minister has expropriated this house and plans to tear it down to build here a school that will teach fairies to understand and appreciate humans.

Mr. Lonefellow Shyboy´s reaction to this news was most immediate, though it will be a while before we can tell you about it.
