Like Tantalus / Como Tántalo

It was five o´clock in the afternoon of the 31st of August and Arley was standing at the door to the devil´s school in Salamanca waiting for it to be September Eve. There was a little detail that had him worried because he hadn’t thought of it before. He believed the gate opened only for groups of seven and he was only one. How was he to get in that night?

Yes, yes. That door only opens from the inside for groups of seven but from the outside I, and any hood, can open it with a credit card. You can´t imagine what a blooming credit card can open. Come on, you blasted boy, enter if you will, you´ve little idea how sick I am of waiting for you out here.

 Arley

I was going to thank you for opening the door for me, but since that isn´t polite here, I will say I don´t see what you are complaining about. I have arrived  hours early.

Si he llegado tempranísimo, horas antes.

Moll Avery / Mariálvara

Look, bloody boy, if you like, you can wait outside for the new pupils to arrive and sneak in among them. But they always arrive late and in a sad condition. Right now they are making ready to celebrate New School Year´s Eve and not precisely with fruit juice.

Once inside, Arley thought the place was deserted until he heard the pathetic howl of a soul in torment. It made him jump and turn to glance at a corner and there he saw a scene worthy of Dante’s Inferno.

Will you hold still? You make a lousy model. How am I going to paint a masterpiece if I can't even do a sketch? Draw a sad note! Hold still, darn you!

Nauta

At last! Arley has arrived. In good time! Alpin, son, maybe now we will get out of here.

¡Por fin ha llegado Arley! En buena hora. ¡Alpin, hijo, a ver si ahora logramos salir de aquí!

Arley

What´s happened? Why are you here, Nauta? Where are the others? Has the devil already chosen a servant and is it Tansy?

Alpin

Scrumptious cake! Give it to me! GIVE IT TO ME!

¡Tarta de rechupete! ¡Dámela! ¡DÁMELA!

Tansy / Tani

Don´t give him a thing or you´ll be stuck in that puddle too.

 Arley

But what is the meaning of this?

¿Pero que está pasando aquí?

 Tansy / Tani

Indeed, the devil has decided to keep me for his own, although I can´t understand why, since there is nothing more useless than a lazy servant. He hasn´t let the rest go. He has literally bounced them out of here. But Alpin had made a deal with me, which is the same as making one with the devil. He is going to remain here in my place.

Nauta

It’s all my fault for only telling you children the pretty myths. Alpin is used to being sent out of every place he goes to once he starts eating all the food there is there, so he thought it would be the same here. He believed that when he finished eating all the food in hell they would kick him out and he would have fooled the devil. I had never told him the story of Tantalus, who was a cannibal and because of that was condemned to suffer hunger and thirst for all eternity, stuck in waters that retreated whenever he bent down to drink them and unable to reach the delicious, aromatic fruit of a tree that waved its branches above him and pulled them away when he tried to pluck a piece. As soon as Moll Avery began to complain that the food in her cupboard was disappearing, the devil popped up and imprisoned Alpin in that pool.

Alpin

Those cakes! Let me eat CAKE!

¡Esas tartas! ¡Dejad que coma TARTA!

Tansy / Tani

I´m saying it twice. Don’t even think of letting him have cake unless you want to be stuck in that pool yourself.

 Arley

Alpin has sold his eternal soul for two pencils! I can’t believe it! It wasn´t necessary, Alpin. I had already made a deal with Tansy and I´ve won both. They´re ours. They´ll have to let you go.

Alpin

What two pencils, what! It was for Tansy´s piece of Michael´s birthday cake, the opportunistic scoundrel! Don’t you let him have the pencils!

 Arley

Well, even so, I think this isn´t fair. And I´m going to put a stop to it. Where is the devil? I want to have a word with him. I´ll get you out of here. People can come to an understanding if they speak and listen to each other.

Pues en cualquier caso, no es justo. Esto no va a quedar así. ¿Dónde está el demonio? Quiero hablar con él. Te voy a sacar de aquí. Hablando se entiende la gente.

And suddenly, Tansy Mandrakecot changed the way he looked...

Y de pronto, Tani Camamandrágoras cambio de aspecto...

 Devil / Demonio

You think so?

¿Tú crees?

The Two Londons / Las Dos Londres

Did you know there are two Londons?

¿Sabías que hay dos Londres?

Did you know the Lord Mayor has no salary and pays his own expenses?

The Sweet Dreamer / La Soñadora de Dulces

Since he had time to do this, Arley decided to humor the gluttonous Abundant Cestodes and stopped at the bakery that was the home of the deservedly famous scrumptious cake. After all, he had something to celebrate. He was now in possession of one more magic pencil and was about to receive yet another if Tansy Mandrakecot kept his word, for they had agreed that Arley could have the two pencils provided he deprive the Blue Men of the one they had swiped from Tansy.

Michael’s birthday cake had given the students at the infernal school a taste of heaven, but not as substantial a taste as they would have liked to have had. So instead of buying a scrumptious cake for fourteen, Arley bought fourteen scrumptious cakes for forty, quite sure that those eaters would make good account of them. After all, Alpin and Cestodes were among them. In fact, he didn´t take more because that was all he could carry.

The master baker who had invented scrumptious cake was a sugar fairy named Mary Sweet. She spent twenty out of twenty four hours asleep dreaming up delirious delicacies. She declined to accompany Arley to hell, alledging that she could not leave her meringue bed for long, much as they might appreciate her work in the basements of Salamanca.  But she made Arley a gift of a box of chocolates with exquisite stuffings for having been such a good client and for giving her establishment such good publicity.

The bakery had a little terrace where one could order smoothies and slushies and ice cream to wash down the cakes and cookies with. When he walked out, Arley noticed there were three men sitting at one of the tables, which was covered with rolls of parchment instead of sweets. One of the three men was an acquaintance of Arley´s and when he saw the fairy child he waved to him, asking him to come to the table.

 Omar

I want to invite you to fruit juice and cookies.

Quiero invitarte a zumo de frutas y galletas.

Arley accepted and sat with them, not wishing to be discourteous, and offered the men chocolates from the box he had been given, which they were pleased to taste. The waitress arrived with their order and the two men drew all the papers there were on it off the table. Up close now, Arley saw that these were maps of the firmament.

Omar

Did you come out the same way you went in?

¿Saliste por donde entraste?

Arley

Yes. But unfortunately I have to return to the school because my companions are being held prisoners in there.

Omar

Well, make sure once more that you come out the same way you entered.

One of the other two men also had something to say. It turned out he had studied at the devil’s school.

 Lord Henry / Don Enrique

Haven´t you seen a shadow that moves by itself there? You haven´t noticed? Well, should you see it, say hi to it from me and tell it I´m sorry I wasn´t able to get it out of there. I can´t return there for any reason whatsoever.

¿No te has fijado?

 Arley

Who shall I say says hi?

¿Quién digo que dice hola?

Lord Henry / Don Enrique

Oh, just say its onetime owner says hi.

The Querent / El consultante

Ehem!

¡Ehem!

The third man didn´t say anything because he was there only to consult the astrologers and he had no interest in anything else.

Arley said goodbye and flew off with his cakes because he didn't want to risk being late.

Poor Kitty Popcorn / Pobre Gatita Palomitas

If somebody is hankering for snow, maybe this song will resign him or her to the heat of what’s left of this summer. Maybe we will sing it on January 19 which is popcorn day, whether it snows or not. And go get some kleenex. It´s a tearjerker.

If you think this song is absurd, remember many of the soldiers that fought in the American Civil War were kids who played baseball with their relatives from the opposite faction between one call to battle and murder each other and the next. That is even more absurd than taking your pet to war with you in your knapsack. Below the video you have a mini test to answer about the song, to see if you got it right.

Poor Kitty Popcorn / Pobre Gatita Palomitas
Did you ever hear the story of the loyal cat? Meyow!
¡Miau!)
Who was faithful to the flag and ever followed that. Meyow!
(Era fiel a la bandera y siempre la siguió. ¡Miau!)
Oh, she had a happy home beneath a southern sky,
(Oh, tenía un hogar feliz bajo un cielo sureño)
But she packed her goods and left it when our troops came nigh,
And she fell into the column with a low glad cry, Meyow!
Round her neck she wore a ribbon – she was black as jet – Meyow!
And at once a gallant claimed her for a soldier´s pet, Meyow!
All the perils of the battle and the march she bore,
Climbing on her master’s shoulder when her feet were sore,
Whispering in his ear with wonder at the cannon’s roar, Meyow!
Now the cruel war “is over” and the troops disband- Meyow!
Kitty follows as a pilgrim in the Northern land – Meyow!
Ah! But sorrow overtakes her, and her master dies,
While she sadly sits a gazing in his dim blue eyes,
Till by strangers driven rudely from the door she cries, Meyow!
So she wanders on the prairie till she sees his form – Meyow!
Carried forth and buried roughly ‘mid the driving storm – Meyow!
Oh! Her slender frame it shivers in the northern blast,
As she seeks the sand mound on which the snow falls fast,
And alone amid the darkness there she breathes her last Meyow!
Poor Kitty Popcorn!
(¡Pobre Gatita Palomitas!)
Buried in a snowdrift now,
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!
Never more shall ring the music of your charming song, Meyow!
