Mr. Two Shadows / El Señor Dos Sombras

The Devil / El Demonio

Boo!

¡Buu!

The devil caught Arley off-guard, but the lad soon got over his surprise and began to try to reason with him.

Arley

You know this isn´t right. Alpin is only a pathologically hungry child. He is ill. The contract is not valid because Alpin never is in his right mind when it comes to food. He isn’t qualified to negotiate about food.

Devil / Demonio

You wish to disqualify Alpin? You think he is legally incompetent? You should have done it earlier. There he stands and there he stays.

¿Quiéres incapacitar a tu amigo? Haberlo hecho antes. Ahí está y ahí se queda.

Arley

I will ask you one more time to let him go. You know this is not fair and can´t be legal.

Devil / Demonio

Oh, aren´t you funny! Right now I´m cracking up, but if you keep insisting, you’ll end up in trouble too. Come on, get out of here before I lose my temper. There´s the door, wide open for you! Go!

¡Fuera!

Arley

No. Let him go. That´s justice. I´m not asking you any more. I´m telling you to.

No.  Suéltelo.

Devil / Demonio

¡Arrrrrrrrghhh!

The devil made a series of menacing faces, more threatening than those on cannibals that dance and yell around big cauldrons. He also blandished his fork. But he wasn’t able to frighten Arley, who turned out to be the one who lost his temper and began to shout, even louder than the devil, ordering him to stand back.

Arley

Stand back! Alpin, get out of the puddle. You can do it! He has no right to keep you there and therefore no power over you! We´re leaving! Stand back! Alpin, think of the scrumptious cakes and go for them! I´ve flung them outside! Out! Through the door!
Everybody out! Now! Stand baaaaaaaack!

¡Ahora mismo! ¡Atráááááááááás!

The next thing Arley knew was that he was sitting on a sidewalk café, choking. He had run out of breath, but Nauta and Lord Henry´s shadow were slapping him on the back and soon he managed to focus on how Alpin was devouring  the scrumptious cakes, arguing all the while with a waiter who said he mustn´t eat them there because he hadn´t ordered them at that café.

 Nauta

Don´t quarrel with the child, sir. He´s going to have fifty cherry cokes. Go for them. Yes, fifty! Look, here you are. I´ll pay for them beforehand. And bring some water for the other lad. And bring me some linden tea. I need a tranquilizer myself.

Shadow / Sombra

Can I have an orgeat?

¿Puedo pedir una horchata?

Alpin

You were spectacular, Arley. Yum. You should have seen yourself. Yum! Yelling orders at the top of your voice. Red as a ripe tomato about to burst. And with your fists clenched in fury! Yum! You almost hit the devil. Take that! Pam! And that! Yummmmm! Anyone would have thought you were the energumen.

Has estado espectacular,  Arley. ¡Yum! ¡Tenías que haberte visto! Chillando órdenes a grito pelado. ¡Yum!

Arley

I just did what you told me when we first wanted to enter the cave. I gave orders instead of explanations. And it worked. But I feel I didn’t do this right, I lost my composure. I´m ashamed of myself.

He perdido la compostura. Estoy avergonzado de mi mismo.

Alpin

Fusspot! Good manners are of no use among fiends.

¡Tiquismiquis! De nada vale la educación entre cafres.

Shadow / Sombra

What do you think they teach in that school? To give demons orders. That´s necromancy for you. And, Arley, my lad, you sure have learned! I want to tell you that I will never leave you. Henry lost me and you saved me. From now on, you will have two shadows. Few who can boast of that.

¡Y tú, Arley, muchacho, vaya que si has aprendido! Quiero decirte que nunca te abandonaré. Enrique me perdió y tú me has salvado.

Arley

That´s fine by me if it is by you and Henry. But I have a bitter taste in my mouth about how things have happened. I don´t like the way I did things.  I think the devil let us go because he got what he wanted. He made me act like a beast. Next time I have a show down with the devil, I won´t lose control.

And suddenly the next time seemed to be alarmingly next.

Hey, Arley! Hey!

¡Eh, Arley! ¡Eh!

But there was no next time right there because everybody ran from the café like bats out of hell.

Am I that ugly? I only wanted to give him his pencil.

¿Tan feo soy? Sí sólo quería darle su lápiz.
