Nauta´s Mini Mythology: Penia and Euthenia / Mini mitología de Nauta: Penia y Eutenia

 Nauta

Due to personal problems I have not visited this blog for quite a while. Ever since I suffered the attack of the image of Medusa that came to life, I have not been the same. The last time I appeared in a post was when Alpin fell into the clutches of the devil himself in the famous school of magic at Salamanca and was condemned to suffer the torment of Tantalus. I said then and now repeat that I do not like to tell the sadder stories of Greek mythology. But today, and because he considers me an authority on this matter, I have been approached by Petey I, the new king of Ravagedland, who wants to learn the name of the Greek goddess of poverty. It seems he wishes to build a monument to this lady. It is to be bigger than the Colossus of Rhodes, and if you don’t know how big that is, you have a picture of it below that I found on the Internet.

True, he doesn´t have much to do with the goddess Penia, but the illustrator of my mini mythology wasn’t able to come up with an image of this goddess, since she starts to cry whenever she tries to draw one and splotches and smudges her efforts. But since King Petey I means to put his own face on the statue and since you have seen what he looks like, perhaps it will be enough with that and an idea of the size of the monument gleaned from viewing the Colossus to imagine what the statue of the goddess will be like.

I have already warned Petey Pepperpot that other rulers, like Caligula and Nero, for example, have raised monuments of gods with their own faces on them before and that this has led to no good. But the decision is, for the time being at least, his.

Penia appears justifying her existence in my play “Plutus.” The play is about how blind the god of richness is, for he blesses rascals with wealth instead of giving it to just people. In my play a man tries to restore his eyesight, because if the just prosper, they will help everyone else to do so too and thus vanquish poverty. Plutus or Pluto is the same god as Hades, and has already appeared in this blog.

Whom I do have a little image of is Euthenia, the goddess of prosperity. This is a goddess I would certainly like all of us to make good acquaintance with, and I now take the opportunity to wish you all a very prosperous 2015, which is something most of us need and which I do not hesitate to wish for.

A Change / Un Cambio

Yes, Alpin parted for the high and mighty castle of the Greed King of Ravagedland with the disputed hen under his arm.  He could not trust Jane and her starving children not to eat the hen before he had returned with the promised provisions. It was not that he meant to reserve it to eat himself. It was because the poor hen, terrified by all the threats on her life she was hearing, had shat a little on the arm of Alpin’s polka  dotted t-shirt. Being under the spell of the Púca, Alpin thought this tiny excrement smelled like the perfume of celestial roses, for now he was only attracted to what was stinky and rotten and shied away from anything that was not stained or infected. Well, he thought the chicken smelled so good that he was enchanted with her and his subconscious mind had decided to keep her for a pet though he was still not well aware of that decision.

Intrigued by Alpin, for she had never known anyone like him, fearing for him a little, for something dreadful could perfectly happen to him up at the castle and also fearing he might not return with the promised food, Plain Jane Doe dared to follow him uphill. Behind her lagged her flock of undernourished kids, who still had enough life in them to feel curiosity.

And Alpin impressed the royal guard so strongly, for they took him for some sort of a spiritual leader, that he made it to the great hall of the Greed King, who was busy tasting a fastuous meal that was a general rehearsal of that he was to enjoy on Christmas Eve.

The Greed King  / El Raca Rey

What...? Who...?

¿Qué...? ¿Quién?

 Alpin

I want two dozen hens and a pair of cocks, a sack of potatoes, seven onions and garlic. I’m not scared of garlic. My sisters are, but not me. It’s to make a Spanish omelette with. Oh, yes. Olive oil and salt too. I might think of something else, but start by bringing me all I’ve asked for while I keep thinking. What are you waiting for? Do you want me to eat up everything there is spread out on this table to prove I’m serious? I can do it faster that the quickest of you can blink. I have spoken!

¿A qué esperan? ¡He dicho!

But it was not as easy for him to devour that food as it would have been had he not been under a spell. There was no spoiled or rotten dish among that show of delicacies. Even the oysters were fabulously fresh and the blue cheeses did not smell bad enough to tempt his new taste. The enchanted boy sighed, determined to make an effort and eat all he could any way he could when the mysterious voice that had been following him whispered some sound advice: “The locusts! The locusts will do it!”

At first he thought there might be an exotic Chinese dish with locusts in the menu, but he soon realized what the whispers were really about. He shook his floating hair and the locusts that were nesting in it dashed out and fell like a biblical curse on the table.

Jumpin’ Jehovah! There’s not a crumb left! Who is this guy? Rasputin resurrected? An alien from Mars? Scary!

¡Jopeta con el profeta! ¡Si no ha quedado ni una miga! ¿Quién será este tío? ¿Rasputín redivivo? ¿Un extraterrestre? ¡Miedo!

The Greed King / El Raca Rey

I’m not giving you the hole of a doughnut! Nobody threatens me! Off with his head!

¡A mí no me amenaza nadie! ¡Cortadle la cabeza!

And the sheriff drew out his sword and without hesitating a second cut off the head of ….the Greed King of Ravaged Land, who now has the dubious distinction of being the first person murdered on this blog.

 Oh!

¡Ay!

 Petey Pepperpot / Pedrito Botepimienta

Holly molly! That’s so dramatic!

¡Jo, macho! ¡Qué fuerte!

But dramatic or not, the Greed King still had but one idea in his head.

The Ghost of the Greed King / El fantasma del Raca Rey

I have hands! I can take it with me! I must get to the treasure room before they do!

¡Tengo manos!

Look here, Petey. On this throne thou shalt sit, this crown thou shalt wear and all thou shalt command, but what I order thee thou had better do! The king is dead! Long live the king!

 Petey Pepperpot /Pedrito Botepimienta

Kingmaker!

¡Creador de reyes!

The Sheriff of Bananawood Forest / El Sheriff del Bosque Sherbanano

I don’t make or break kings, but I keep the peace and enforce order, because that is what I pay myself for. The late king wanted a showdown with this stranger and it looked like we would be much the worse for it. We must give him what he asks for while it is little and in this way get him out of here as fast as possible, for holy men are nefarious for governments and as for aliens, the further off in space they are the better.

 Petey Pepperpot / Pedrito Botepimienta

I’m going to impoverish everybody. I love poor people. Pitiful people are so movingly vulnerable. They have such lousy self-esteem that they bring out the best in me. I always feel a superior being when with them, a hero, a demi god, a saint. In my kingdom there will only be poor people and the sheriff and I will be the only exceptions that prove the rule. Because we must control everybody else, we will keep all the money for ourselves. I want to be known as Petey I, the Pauperphile. And the first thing I will build is an enormous, spectacular, megalomaniacal monument of myself dressed as the goddess of poverty. By the way, what's her name?

Me haré llamar Pedrito I,  el Pobréfilo.

 The Sheriff / El Sheriff

Mr. Alien, you’ve seen how things have changed here. We are going to give you the chickens and the potatoes and even black garlic, if you prefer it that color. And as for this…lady, your protégée, who is, I believe, at the root of this problem, I will find her a post in my kitchen and her kids won’t go hungry again since there are always lots of leftovers to be had there. You see how you have solved the problem you came up here to fix. You needn’t intervene in our affairs any further. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and I’m sure they are waiting anxiously for you at home. We’ve come to the end of the story and the kids will eat bits of pheasant and quail and caviar right off my very own dirty plates happily ever after. So please leave the same way you came or any other of your choice, but go. Goodbye, goodbye! Yes, that is the way out.

 Alpin

If you are happy with this deal, I’ll be leaving now, Jane. But if you need me, summon me. Cackle and I’ll come. That’s all you need do. I told you I wasn’t just anybody. I’m taking this chicken with me, because now you have a few of your own. Remember not to eat them.  I can’t believe it! I’ve done a good deed and I have a pet I dote on and would kill for! There’s no recognizing me! To my hair, gallant locusts, we’re out of here!

A short while after Alpin had left that mortal site, Arley arrived asking for his friend and was taken to see Plain Jane.

 Plain Jane / Simplemente Mari

Yes, Mr. Alpin helped me and my children before setting off in that direction, following his nose to the city dump of the neighboring country.

 Arley

Thank you, Jane.  In gratitude for the information you have given me and since you now work in a kitchen, I will grant you the gift of making good use of the chestnuts from the forest nearby, since we fairies are able to do such things. You will know how to make bread from chestnut flour, which is inexpensive food for the poor, and marrons glacés, considered food for the rich. They will both taste delicious. Merry Christmas!

Gracias, Mari. Ambos sabrán a gloria. ¡Feliz Navidad!

Milk Sweet Au Bain Marie / Dulce de Leche al Baño María

Heather, Mary the Jewess and Thistle / Brezo, María la judía y Cardo

Hi. Heather and Thistle here. Today, we are going  to make Milk Sweet. Milk Sweet is very easy to make thanks to a technique invented by our Mum’s great friend, Mary Prophetisima, also known as Mary the Jewess. Mary is considered the first true alchemist of the Western world and has been practicing for far more than a thousand years. The technique we are going to employ is named after her.  It is called bain-marie, or Mary´s bath. It consists of putting something you wish to cook in a container and then putting that container in a second container about half filled with water or some other liquid. Then you boil the thing in the first container in the water of the second. This isn’t only done in kitchens. It is also useful in science labs.

Hola.

Here goes our recipe for Milk Sweet, step by step.

1.  Take a can of condensed milk and remove its label.

2.  Make two tiny holes in the top of the can with a can opener. The holes should be on opposite sides of the top of the can.  If you don´t do this, the can might turn into a domestic bomb and explode, leaving the Milk Sweet all over your ceiling. And that is the least that can happen.

3.  Put the can in a small pot and fill the pan with water leaving only one inch of the can uncovered by the water. You must do this so the water won´t enter the can through the holes you made.

4.  Put the pot on the cooker at medium heat. Keep an eye on the water until it comes to a boil, then lower the heat.

5. Be patient. The longer you allow the milk to boíl, the harder the Milk Sweet will be. The process can take from three to four hours depending on how hard you like the milk.  / Ten paciencia.

6.  If milk starts to come out of the holes you made, try to remove it with a spoon. Don´t let the milk fall into the water.

7. After three or four hours have passed, according to your choice, turn off the heat and remove the can from the pan with pincers or kitchen gloves so you won’t burn your fingers. Allow the can to cool on a rack.

8. Open the can carefully with a canopener.  Turn the can upside down over a bowl or deep plate and let the Milk Sweet fall out, scraping whatever clings to the can with a spatula./ Abre la lata con cuidado con un abrelatas.

 9. You can beat the Milk Sweet if you like so it will all have the same texture.

10. Enjoy it or keep it in the fridge. But don´t forget to clean up the kitchen.
