The Loathly Lady / La Dama Aborrecible

Sir Gawain appears in some of the oldest stories about King Arthur, whose nephew he is. This knight has some of the features of a sun god. From dawn to noon, he grows stronger every minute. But from noon to dusk he grows weaker and weaker.

One of the stories about Gawain is that of the Loathly Lady. In this story Arthur falls prisoner to a giant who will only release him if he can answer this question: What do women want? The giant gives the king a year to go find the answer to this question. If he hasn't found it when the year is up, he will have to return to the giant's dungeons once more.

Arthur and his knights search everywhere for the answer. They don't leave a stone unturned, but there is no finding it.

One day Arthur sees a hideous woman sitting under a tree. The woman says she has the answer to his question. The king agrees to give her whatever she asks him for if she gives him the right answer. "Women want to do as they please," says the loathly lady.

Arthur is now free from the giant, but his nephew Gawain has to marry the loathly lady, since that is what she asks for as a reward.

Gawain's wedding is more like a funeral. The wedding guests are all silent because they are struck dumb when they see the bride. Nothing they have been told has prepared them for something as awful.Arthur is so distressed it takes all his knights can do to keep him from giving himself up to the giant.  Gawain, however, is determined to serve his sovereign and he goes through with the wedding.

That night, when the newlyweds are alone in their bedchamber, the loathly lady suddenly turns into a gorgeous woman. She tells Gawain that she is under a spell and has to spend half of the twenty-four hours of a day looking hideous and loathly. But during the other twelve hours she is as lovely as any of the other beauties at court and can hold a candle to anyone. She also says that Gawain can choose if he wants her to look beautiful at night, when they are alone together, or by day, when everyone can see her.

Gawain wants her to be beautiful when they are alone together, but he knows that the courtiers will laugh at her and treat her cruelly by day, and he feels sorry for her. Since he can't decide what is best, he asks her to decide for herself.

The lady smiles and says he has just broken the spell because he has let her choose and allowed her to do as she pleases. Now she will be beautiful twenty-four hours a day.
