The Romantic Toximeter / El toxímetro romántico

Are you positive you want to do this? I´m very grateful you offered to come with me to dinner at the garbage dump. But as a way of celebrating Valentine´s Day it might leave something to be desired.

¿Estás segura de que te gusta este plan? Yo te agradezco mucho que te hayas ofrecido a acompañarme a la cena en el vertedero, pero como plan para celebrar San Valentín puede que deje algo que desear.

 This way we will kill several birds with one stone. You have managed to draw me out of my lab, you know what a recluse I am and how I don’t like to go anywhere at all and we are going to have dinner together and in a place where I can try out my new toximeter.  It measures everything noxious.  Germs, lead, mites, the chances of catching trichinosis, you name it, this measures it! 

Así matamos varios pájaros de un tiro. Tú has conseguido sacarme a pasear, que ya sabes que yo soy una reclusa y no me gusta salir del laboratorio, vamos a cenar juntos y yo voy a poder probar mi nuevo toxímetro.  Mide todo lo nocivo. Gérmenes, plomo, ácaros,  las posibilidades de coger triquinosis… ¡de todo!

I’m not sure about this. I don’t know if examining food you are being offered to see if you might get poisoned if you eat it is quite right. This could offend our hosts.

No sé. Eso de examinar la comida a la que te están convidando para ver si te vas a envenenar si la comes no me parece del todo bien. Esto podría ofender a nuestros anfitriones.

Nonsense! It´s not as if we were employing a mortal taster to find out if our food is poisoned like kings and emperors have. With this gadget, there is no need for anyone to drop dead.  

¡Tonterías! No es como si estuviésemos utilizando a un catador mortal para comprobar si la comida está envenenada, como hacían los reyes y los emperadores. Con este aparato de última tecnología, no tiene porque caer muerto nadie.

And as for our hosts, why should they be offended? It is not insane and pointless experimentation we will be at. They would have to be pretty stupid not to appreciate the use of what I have got here. I will explain it all to them in such a way that even the least brilliant of the lot will understand. And I will even give them this toximeter as a gift. I have more back at the lab. You have no idea how happy you have made me, inspiring me to think of assisting to such a dinner. This will be the most interesting and productive of all the Valentine’s Day celebrations I have been to in my life.

Y en cuanto a nuestros anfitriones, ¿por qué habrían de ofenderse? No se trata de un experimento chiflado y sin sentido. Tontos tendrían que ser para no apreciar lo útil que podría resultar lo que tengo aquí. Además, se lo voy a explicar todo de forma que lo pueda entender hasta el menos brillante,  e incluso les voy a regalar este aparato. Tengo más en el laboratorio. ¡No tienes ni idea de lo feliz que me has hecho inspirándome la idea de asistir a semejante cena! Va a ser el San Valentín más interesante y provechoso de toda mi vida.
