Auden's Shield of Achilles / El escudo de Aquiles según Auden

As you can see, today as well as ever, this is a more of the same poem. Some people don't learn. War after war. In case you are one of those who haven't learnt, this poem is about how horrid war is. The beautiful Nereid Thetis orders the god of the forge and of volcanoes, Hephaestos, to make a shield for her son, Achilles.Achilles, who is the ultimate warrior, kills a lot of other blokes during the Trojan War and is soon after killed himself by Paris, who is clumsier on the battlefield but has priviledged information. Paris knows what Achilles' weak spot is. Later, Paris also gets himsel killed. Unlike in Greek mythology, in this poem Hephaestos engraves on the shield images that show the horror of  totalitarian societies instead of the benefits of civilization. A prize for the first to guess what the execution described in the poem resembles.  

Como podéis ver, hoy igual que ayer, esta es una poesía de más de lo mismo. Algunos no aprenden. Guerra tras guerra. Por si eres de los que no aprendieron, esto va de lo horrible que es la guerra. La hermosa nereida Tetis encarga al dios de la forja y de los volcanes, Hefesto, un escudo para su hijo Aquiles. Aquiles, que es el no va a más de los guerreros,  se carga a un montón de gente durante la guerra de Troya y Paris, más torpe en el campo de batalla pero más enteradillo, le mata a él. Paris tenía información privilegiada. Conocía el punto débil de su enemigo. Luego también muere Paris, claro. En la mitología griega, el escudo de Aquiles está decorado con imágenes preciosas. En la poesía Hefesto graba en el escudo imágenes que muestran los horrores del totalitarismo en vez de los beneficios de la civilización. Premio al primero que se dé cuenta de a que se parece la ejecución que describe el poema.

Y así quedó de viejo. 

Some interesting facts about him are that he was born in England in 1907. There were several members of the proCatholicAnglican clergy in his family. He first published in school magazines as a kid. He went to Oxford where Tolkien sparked his interest in old English poetry. For a time he was a much loved schoolteacher in Scotland. He came to Spain to back the republicans during the Civil War, offering help in medical and sanitary affairs and helped raise funds for Ayuda Médica Española. In 1939 he went to the U.S.A and became an American citizen. He married author Thomas Mann's daughter Erika to get her out of Germany during the Second World War. He taught for a time at various universities, including the University of Michigan, was a candidate for the Noble Prize, and is considered one of the three best English language poets of the twentieth century. He died in 1973 in Austria, where he used to spend his summers.     

Algunos datos interesantes sobre él son: Nació en Inglaterra en 1907. En su familia había varios clérigos anglicanos de orientación pro-católica, Empezó publicando de niño en revistas escolares. Estudió en Oxford, dónde Tolkien avivó su interés por la poesía inglesa antigua. Fue durante un tiempo un maestro de escuela muy querido en Escocia. Estuvo en España apoyando al bando republicano. Se dedicó a cuestiones médicas y sanitarias, recaudando fondos para Ayuda Médica Española. En 1939 se fue a los Estados Unidos de América y se nacionalizó norteamericano. Se casó con la hija del escritor Thomas Mann para poder sacarla de Alemania cuando la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Enseñó durante un tiempo en varias universidades, incluyendo la de Michigan, fue candidato al Premio Nobel, y es considerado uno de los tres mejores poetas en lengua inglesa del siglo XX. Murió en 1973, mientras estaba veraneando en Austria, donde solía pasar los veranos.

The Miracle of the Birdies / El Milagro de los Pajarcitos

Years ago we published in this blog our translation to the English of the Ballad of St. Anthony and the Birdies. This song is based on a mediaeval legend about a miracle performed when he was a child by St. Anthony of Padua, or St. Anthony of  Lisbon for the Portuguese. The ballad's innocence and candor makes it worth listening to. So today we send you to The Rosy Tree Blog where we have published it again, this time next to the original Spanish version, which makes it easier to print. Our English version is as alike as possible to the original Spanish and can be sung to the same tune. We hope you enjoy listening to Joaquín Diaz sing this ballad or even singing it yourselves. Hace años, un junio, con motivo de la verbena de San Antonio, publicamos en este blog  nuestra traducción al inglés de la canción que cuenta el milagro que obró de niño con unos pajaritos San Antonio de Padua, que es para los  portugueses San Antonio de Lisboa. Esta canción, basada en una leyenda medieval sobre el gran santo, es de una ternura y una inocencia conmovedoras. Hoy os mandamos a visitar el Blog del Árbol Sonrosado, donde es posible imprimir ambas versiones a la vez muy fácilmente porque allí hemos vuelto a publicar nuestra traducción al inglés ahora con  la versión original en español al lado.
