Welsh New Year Carol / Villancico de Año Nuevo Galés

A Rosy Tree Blog Entry /Entrada del Blog del Árbol Sonrosado

Levy Dew, the New Year Carol

Take a sprig of an evergreen plant, dip it in fresh water and sprinkle it on the face of those you meet while you go on your way when the sun goes down on New Year’s Eve, or at the dawn of New Year’s Day, thus blessing them kindly. You can ask for a small reward for having blessed them, especially if you sing the carol below for them. Beware of bad-tempered people who don’t understand blessings. Just bless their feet and let them move away like the Old Year. Ah, and the seven wires of gold are the strings of a harp. Below you have the carol in English and our translation of it to the Spanish.

A New Year Carol

Here we bring new water from the well so clear,

For to worship God with, this happy New Year.

Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine,

The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.

Sing reign of the Fair Maid, with gold upon her toe,

Open you the West Door, and let the Old Year go.

Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine,

The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.

Sing the reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her chin.

Open you the East Door and let the New Year in.

The Dilly Carol / El villancico del Pájaro Veraz

The Dilly Carol is a Welsh counting song that is to be sung on 12th Night,

It is also a riddle song that lists both Christian and pagan symbols.

Basically, it is about the message of love and peace to all people of good will delivered by the Dilly Bird.

Whoever you are, we wish you a Merry Christmas! / ¡Seas quien seas, te deseamos una feliz navidad!

We insist on wishing you a Merry Christmas! / ¡Insistimos en desearte una Feliz Navidad!

Fergus MacLob O’Toora

When the lights go out, it is only natural to worry. When they return, one feels happy. If you have suffered a blackout, you can’t deny this is true. Unless you have reasons to want to remain in the dark forever. These kind of reasons are generally sinister or depressing, and therefore of no interest to us here. Christmas is a festival of light. It is the arrival of the Light of the World Itself that is being celebrated. This is not just a moment of hope, but the very moment of Hope!  How can anyone in his or her sane mind feel offended because someone has wished him or her happiness even if this is during a feast that includes eating well and giftgiving? A feast during which social differences are ignored and peace is wished to anyone of good will?  This is a feast that has survived the attacks even of Christians of the kind that cannot bear to see people enjoying themselves and who would forbid it if they could.

Oliver Cromwell

We Puritans tried to do just that during the English revolution. Supposedly, we had set up a republic in England, though in truth I, the busiest body, was really a dictator. My coreligionists so loved to spend all their time arguing in Parliament that they declared Christmas a working day so they could spend more time doing what they liked to do there. The result was that our countrymen rioted and soon restored the monarchy with the so-called Merry Monarch at the fore of it. What infamy! What a superficial fool! How stupid people are!

Charles II, some ladyfriends and one of his dogs / Carlos II, algunas de sus amigas y su perrito

I happen to be the person Oliver is calling stupid. I’m Charles II, the Merry Monarch. I love the theatre, music, feasting, dressing well, eating better and above all I love women. Everything Puritans hate, of course. But I’m no fool. I knew that banning a feast which is probably the only day in the year many of my subjects have a nice meal is not a good idea. So I never made that mistake. What if there are a lot of drunks out in the street? There are probably more drunks out there any other day. Misery makes more drunks than happiness. What if families gather only to quarrel? It would be worse if they never even gathered.

Michael O’Toora

To wish someone a merry Christmas, you say “Merry Christmas.” Lately,  lots of people are saying “Happy Christmas!” instead, but the idea is basically the same. If you don’t celebrate Christmas, you can still send people cards that say “Season’s Greetings.” That covers about every nice feast celebrated during the winter, or at least, during December. Christmas, like most festivals of light, is celebrated close to the winter solstice. If you are a pagan you can wish people “Magical solstice!” or, if you are a British pagan, “Happy Yule!” What matters is that we all be happy in civilized ways. The sun has no favorites. It shines on everyone equally.

Flaccus Intrepidus Nauta

If they still haven’t fired your Latin teacher, you can make him or her happy by shouting “Io, Saturnalia!” At this time of year, we Romans celebrated a festival called Sol Invictus. We celebrated the return of the light during the winter solstice.

Ebenezer Scrooge

And if you are one of those embittered killjoys who can’t stand seeing others happy, you had better not say more than “Bah, humbag!” when someone tries to wish you happiness this Christmas. If you don’t know who I am, you should read my story, “A Christmas Carol,” by Charles Dickens. A great classic it is! As for people who are crazy enough to be offended because you celebrate Christmas and take the trouble to wish them happiness, do try to remember that you can have a problem with this kind of people any day of the year and over any kind of humbug, as well as over more serious matters. You really needn’t let them ruin your Christmas. Let there be light!

This post is published here in both English and Spanish.

Llega bravo y arrogante.
¡Muerde, Dragón!

Sé prudente, ten cuidado,
Coge menos de un puñado.
¡Muerde, Dragón!

Si su lengua azul te lame,
Hará que tu boca clame.
¡Muerde, Dragón!

Pues se defiende si amenazas
Su dulce festín de pasas.
¡Muerde, Dragón!

Mas aunque feroz parezca,
Viene a celebrar la fiesta.
¡Muerde, Dragón!

No le temas, sé osado,
Su fuego pronto se habrá enfriado.
¡Muerde, Dragón!

Snap Dragon is a traditional game kids used to play on holidays like Christmas or Halloween. A bowl full of raisins was brought to the table, rum or brandy was showered on the raisins and then this was set on fire. The kids round the bowl would try to snatch raisins from the dragon, that is, the fire. If they managed to steal some, they would eat them immediately. Needless to say, some of the players burned their mouths or hands. But these players were called clumsy and the game went on while other, more able players, who knew how to avoid getting burned stole and ate raisins till the flames went out. In my parents' home, since we have always belonged to the Timorous Brotherhood, we fed the dragon instead of stealing from it. From a safe distance, we cast raisins into the flaming bowl. When the fire was out, we added the raisins to a dessert of ice cream and other dry fruits. Although back then the times were different and fire purifies everything, players had to wash their hands before touching the raisins they were to cast. While playing, some verses about the game are recited. We publish the original English verses below. Our translation to the Spanish can be found above.

Here he comes with flaming bowl,
Don't he mean to take his toll,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!

Take care you don't take too much,
Be not greedy in your clutch,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!

With his blue and lapping tongue
Many of you will be stung,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!

For he snaps at all that comes
Snatching at his feast of plums,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!

But Old Christmas makes him come,
Though he looks so fee! fie! fum!
Snip! Snap! Dragon!

Don't you fear him but be bold,
Out he goes, his flames are cold,
Snip! Snap! Dragon!

How the check affair ended / Cómo terminó el asunto del cheque

Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Hello. I´m here to tell you how everything went after the Dark Man’s phone call. As you know, Darcy asked my Mum to see if I was still around, and she went to the window and saw I was and called out and I heard her.  I returned home to see what she wanted and she put me on the phone with Darcy. I didn’t want to tell him I had the check, because I didn’t trust him, but, of course, I had to because nobody can say no to the Dark Man.

Hola.

He told me not to move from where I was and to close the doors and windows and draw the blinds and wait. He would hang up and come for the check immediately, which, he assured me would be safe with him. I did as he asked and  my Mum and I sat on the sofa and waited for Darcy and I explained to her what was happening and she got scared someone might arrive before Darcy and steal the check, so she put it in a heatproof  glass container and burnt it in there. She said she would show Darcy the ashes and ask him to ask her if she had really burnt the Magi´s blank check. He would believe her when she answered yes, because you can’t lie to the Dark Man if he asks you to tell the truth. All this took about seven minutes and Darcy arrived in eight, breaking a record.

He immediately called the Three Wise Men, who were already mounting their camels, to tell them the check had been found and destroyed. They were very happy to hear that, because for the first time in their lives they had used a credit card to be able to ride out that night and they weren’t too happy about it. They were given a credit card because word had gotten around that Darcy himself was out there looking for the check and it was ten to one the Dark Man would find it. Ernest, Death’s Coachman, had told the Magi that as long as they had credit they could ride, but if they should ever have to make good an abusive blank check, the only ride they would go on would be in his carriage.

The Wise Men wanted to know where the check had been all this time and Darcy told them all about me. They were so pleased with me that they promised to send me a King Cake with a very special little figure in it every single morning from this Epiphany on to Eternity. They said they would keep sending me one forever even if they were eventually forced to move away from the world of mortals.

I told my Mum that every morning would be the Epiphany for us from that day on, and that we would always have hot chocolate and King Cake for breakfast and that she would always find the little figure and be crowned queen and I would always find the bean because I could afford to provide the next cake since I was to have one free every day. Darcy wanted to reward me too for having made his job easy for him and I asked Darcy to ask my Mum to stay awake from eight in the morning till noon every day at least and she had to promise she would. So now I´m not scared she might just never wake up again one day, or turn into a little baby from so much resting.

Happy Epiphany!

¡Feliz día de Reyes!

Snowfall / Nevada

Knickknack Nimbus continues to meditate while pretending to be a gargoyle in his garden, now under falling snow.

Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Let´s face it. I’m not good at what I do. I have a handicap. I can only steal in places where there aren’t any knick-knacks. If I were to dig a tunnel to enter a bank, once I was in I would notice the trinkets on the desk of one of the employees, see one I love and forget everything else and flee from the spot with it in my pocket before someone could stop me and take it from me.

So it turns out I hit the jackpot this summer when I filched the leprechaun. And what the deuce can someone like me do with a prize like that? What a mess I’ve put my foot into with this kind of jackpot! Well, I’m small and insignificant and shorter than the hobbit who made it to the chasm where he had to throw the ring, so maybe I can get to the Magi without being noticed. I don’t know those people, but I don’t wish them any harm. And I want to return the check. Yes, I need to get there before they get robbed. Because I certainly haven’t robbed them.

Baby, come inside. It has to be awfully cold out there. I want some tea.

Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Your tea is waiting for you on a tray on the coffee table in front of the sofa in the TV room, Mum. I also made you egg and mustard sandwiches. Get up and walk a bit and go downstairs. Don’t go back to sleep after having your tea. Lie on the couch and watch TV a while. You´re not getting prettier from sleeping anymore. You´re getting to look too young. Why, you look like my daughter instead of my mum. Sigh. Sometimes I think you sleep so much because you don’t want to look like me.

You know all I really like to do is sleep.

 Knickknack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

That´s not entirely true. You show some interest when I bring you a new knick-knack, don’t you? Look, Mum, I have to go out for a while. But I promise to be back as soon as I can.

And right then, Darcy got the right number.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!

Mrs. di Lembo / Sra. del Limbo

I have a lovely leprechaun ornament hanging right here on my bedside Christmas tree. Hmmm. I think it was this summer I got it. My son gave it to me. He always gives me cute little knickknacks because he knows I love them. Yes, he lives here, but no, he’s not at home now. He just left. Where did he go? Well, I´m not sure, but I think he went to get me a Twelfth Day of Christmas gift. He always has something for me when he returns home. When I last saw him he was walking towards the East. I think that if I got up and looked out the window I might still see him in the distance. Oh, no! Do I really have to get up?

Pues no estoy segura. ¡Ay, no! ¿De veras tengo que levantarme?

And Mrs. di Lembo did get up, because Darcy had asked her to and she couldn’t say no. And she saw her son still was within shouting distance and he heard her when she called. And the Magi is going out tomorrow whether they get their check back in time or not because they have a credit card and they've put themselves in the hands of God.

More about this another day.

Más sobre esto otro día.

Still Searching / Todavía buscando

Today is the fourth of January and it is already dusk. The dark man is still phoning to see if he can find the person who took the little ornament shaped like a leprechaun that holds the Magi´s blank check within it. Thank heavens phone calls are free in the fairy world. He has already called half the numbers in the fairy phone book. And time after time he has a conversation similar to this one:

"Hello? This is Darcy, the Dark Man, speaking. Please don’t hang up. I’ll be with you in a second. If there is anyone eavesdropping, stop at once. Forget about what has just happened and go to sleep for the rest of the week. Hello? Yes, this is the Dark Man and this is no joke. I need to know if you or someone you know have a little ornament shaped like a leprechaun in your power? Blah, blah, blah. Ok, thank you. Goodbye and happy new year. Carry on with whatever you were doing and forget about this call. Hello? This is Darcy, the Dark Man, speaking. Please don’t hang up, I’ll be with you in a second. Blah, blah, blah…"

"¿Hola? ¿Hola? Darcy, el hombre oscuro, al habla. Por favor no cuelgue. Estaré con usted en un segundo. Blah, blah, blah..."

The person Darcy is looking for is sitting next to the backdoor of his house pretending to be a gargoyle so as not to attract the neighbours' attention.

His house is full of knickknacks.

Su casa está llena de maritatas.

Darcy, the Dark Man / Darcy, el hombre oscuro

When you haven’t a clue, consult a medium. Gentlemen, I want you to tell me who has the Magi’s blank check.

If we knew who had it, we would have it. But we were expecting you to call on us. So we’ve prepared a profile of the thief.

We visited the scene of the theft, which is leprechaun Michael Toora’s house, and the vibes there told us that this person is not the average thief, because all he took was a cheap ornament.

Of course, stealing nothing more than the ornament would make sense if he knew that the check was inside it, but we don’t think he knew this at all. If he had known, he would have made use of the check by now.

Though we believe he didn’t know what he was stealing when he took the ornament, we think he does now. Everyone does, so it is reasonable to suppose he does too.

We believe this person is neither important nor powerful in his field and that he doesn’t have what he needs to make the check good. Someone lacking power or contacts would only be robbed of the check if he tried to cash it.

We also feel that this person is a loner, because he hasn’t breathed a word to anyone about the check. You can’t speak about something like that without a leak. So we suggest you look for a loner who isn’t stupid or imprudent and who has a fixation on ornaments. Ah! And it is likely that he lives with his mother.

¡Ah! Y probablemente viva con su madre.

Darcy

Give me a name!

¡Dadme un nombre!

Gemaniah Worrywart / Jemanías, el Ansioso

We´re almost a hundred percent sure his name is in the fairy telephone directory. His mom is probably too old to know how to use a cell phone properly.

If he's not in the pink pages, he might be in the blue. We suggest you phone everyone with a suspicious name. Start with those who own a motel.

Come, Gem! Don’t be prejudiced and make the poor guy look worse than he is till we really know what he's like. You should know better. There are those who consider us rather shady too.

Venga, Jem.

Right. Especially me.

Pues sí, sobre todo a mí.

The Vicious Villains Society's Annual Assembly / La asamblea anual de la Asociación de Villanos Empedernidos

At the end of December, the Vicious Villains Society holds a meeting in the terribly uninviting dungeon of its clubhouse, which is illuminated only by chochinobakes, to make a balance of all the harm they have done that year.

Although this has been a fruitful year for evil, not all is sweet success in the society because its members are divided and the chasm between the two existing factions is wider every day.

On one side are the traditional bad guys. They know that goodness exists and their only purpose in life is to put an end to it. These members of the society call themselves “the consecrated,” because they consider their devotion to evil a sort of priesthood. They not only behave badly. They dress badly, doing their very worst to look dreadful, and they even smell bad too. But at odds with the traditional bad guys is the other faction, whose followers do not believe in the existence of good. They believe that only evil exists and that it is something so natural that there is no reason to hide it. Therefore, they do not dress the role. They prefer to wear the latest, coolest fashions. The traditional bad guys call their opposition “the confounded shameless ones,” whereas these call those “the dorks with a goon complex.” It goes without saying that they hate each others’ guts.

Because it is rather lax and far less demanding, the number of those who defend the second tendency increases daily. And to avoid becoming a minority when it is time to vote and make decisions, the traditional bad guys have had to visit unemployment offices to hire petty delinquents whom they have infiltrated in their society with a view to gaining votes.

The Lord of the Goon-Dorks / El Señor de los Tontos Acomplejados

Ok! The emergency plan guys. Where are you?

¡A ver! ¡Los del plan de emergencia! ¿Dónde están?

Knick-knack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

They´re already in the assembly hall. Only I am still to enter. Nimbus di Lembo at your service. As well as at evil’s, sir.

The Lord of the Goon-Dorks / El Señor de los Tontos Acomplejados

Then what are you waiting for? Put on your hood and enter the assembly dungeon, the meeting is about to begin. Oh, what we have come to! Here you have us hiring useless bunglers like this one! Because in these times you have to be a real idiot to be a thief and be unemployed. You guys are lazy and hate to work, that’s all there is to it.

¿Pues a qué esperas?

Knick-knack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

Don’t say that. I have a curriculum. I mean, I have a record. Last summer I was hired to steal books by the Wizard Freston himself.

The Lord of the Goon-Dorks / El Señor de los Tontos Acomplejados

And I’m sure he fired you the minute he hired you or you wouldn't be here. C´mon, go into the assembly dungeon.

The Lord of the Shameless Ones / El Señor de los Sinvergüenzas

What are sharp guys like us doing in a joint like this? You don’t find seats as hard or as dirty as these even in the cheapest sections of the worst theatres. And need I mention the ******* Japanese ghost lanterns? Who put those in here? My interior designer would die of a heart attack if he saw them.

Members who wish to assist to an assembly must do so masked, to avoid having problems with other members. If they weren’t unrecognizable, more than one might take the opportunity to even a score with another. So that acts of violence will not interrupt the normal functioning of the assemblies, the clothing to be worn by those who assist is designed and regulated to make everyone look as equal and uniform and unrecognizable as possible.

But in this, as in everything else, the differences that exist between both gangs have become visible. Those who consider themselves consecrated wear black from the top of their heads to the tips of their toes. But the shameless ones sustain that wearing black is the same as being ashamed of being delinquents, and although they cover up to avoid incidents, they wear yellow.

The Lord of the Shameless Ones / El Señor de los Sinvergüenzas

Let us analyze the grade of achievement of our goals:

Blah, blah, … We are effectively turning this planet into a desert. Despite the existence of protected areas, in short time we will have sent most of those bumpkins who insist on caterwauling pastorally in the green to the place where they belong in this millennium, which is the local city dump. We shall not rest until we see them hopping and skipping through tons of garbage. We congratulate all those who have again this year contributed to making allergy to pollen pandemic. We hope this leads to the total disappearance of vegetation in any place held to be habitable.

As for education, once again we find ourselves acclaiming the Wizard Freston for his zeal in making books disappear. We hope his plan to charge for lending library books prospers. We are also aware that he has quite a flair for making intellectuals look like whackos. But now he doesn’t only make them look like ridiculous and ineffectual lunatics. He has achieved far more, and thanks to him, in the mind of most ignorant citizens, the image of a man quietly reading a book by himself is immediately associated with that of a mass murderer. You only have to listen to how the news always insists on the great intelligence of the heartless perpetrators of blah, blah, blah…

And last but not least, I have to take off my hat to and ask for a huge ovation for…the crook who swiped the blank check from the Magi! Whoever you are, you have given us a lesson in evildoing.

Knick-knack Nimbus / Maritatas Nimbo

What a drag. I'm leaving early because they are waiting for me at home and I am no use to anyone here anymore. I really hope they honestly pay me for having been here and listened to all this and don’t swindle me. I suppose I should return the costume. I’ll leave it hanging here in the closet. I don’t want these guys to accuse me of stealing it. Hey! There’re two moles in that corner!

Rupert / Ruperto

These blokes have no idea who took the leprechaun with the blank check hidden in it.

Swithin / Suitino

Nor do we. Let´s leave. We´re wasting our time here. Come, before someone sees us.

Pero nosotros tampoco. Vámonos, que estamos perdiendo el tiempo aquí. Venga, antes de que nos vea alguien.
