The 8 Chinese Trigrams / Los 8 trigramas chinos

We always say that nine is our favorite number. In Feng Shui, nine is also a basic number. There are eight directions in which we can move away from the place where we are standing still, which would be the center. The Chinese give each of these directions – and also the center – a number. I have made a simple sketch so you can see all this better.

Siempre os decimos que el nueve es nuestro número favorito. En el Feng Shui también es un número fundamental. Hay ocho direcciones en las que nos podemos mover, partiendo del lugar en el que nos quedamos parados que sería el centro. Los chinos dan a cada una de estas direcciones - y también al centro - un número. He hecho un pequeño esquema para que veáis esto mejor.

Each of the eight directions corresponds to a trigram. Trigrams are drawn by drawing lines that may or may not be cut in half. Each trigram is related to the number of the place where it belongs. Below is a sketch similar to the one above, but with the trigrams added.

A cada una de las ocho direcciones le corresponde un trigrama. Los trigramas se dibujan con líneas continuas y/o interrumpidas. A cada trigrama le corresponde el número del lugar en el que se encuentra. Debajo va un esquema como el de arriba pero con los trigramas añadidos.

What is all this good for? To help put each thing in its place. Branna will now help you find your personal trigram so that you will know which is your place. For things to go well with you, it is convenient that the door to your house be in the direction that corresponds to your trigram.

¿Para qué sirven todo esto? Para colocar cada cosa en su lugar. Branna ahora te ayudará a encontrar tu trigrama personal para que sepas cual es tu lugar. Para que te vaya todo bien, conviene que la puerta de tu casa esté en la dirección que corresponde a tu trigrama.

Finding your trigram is an easy but slightly sexist operation. It is done one way for men and another for women. Since I am a woman and I don´t want to be prejudiced, I will be courteous and show you first how it is done for men.

Encontrar tu trigrama es una operación sencilla pero un poco sexista. Se calcula de una manera para los hombres y de otra para las mujeres.Como soy una mujer y no quiero ser sexista, seré cortés y empezaré por explicaros como se hace para los hombres.

If you are a man, you find your trigram this way:

You have to know the year of your birth, for example, 1996..

Tienes que conocer tu año de nacimiento, por ejemplo 1996.

Add the last two numbers of the year of your birth: 9+6=15

Suma los dos últimos números de tu año de nacimiento: 9+6=15

If the result has two cyphers, add the first to the second to get just one number: 1+5=6

Si el resultado es de dos cifras, suma la primera a la segunda para obtener sólo una: 1+5=6

Substract 6 from 10: 10-6=4

Resta 6 a 10: 10-6=4

The final result is 4, the numbre of the trigram SUN.

El resultado final es 4, que es el número del trigrama SUN.

Therefore, SUN is your trigram, wood is your element, 4 is your number and the southeast is your direction and the direction of the door to your house if you are to be lucky.

So KEN is your trigram, the mountain is your symbol, 8 is your number, the northeast your direction and the direction of the front door of your house if you are to be lucky.

Just one more detail.The Chinese year doesn´t start at the same time as the Western year. So if you were born in January or the beginning of February, to find your trigram you may have to work with the year before your western year of birth. For example, if you were born on January 5, 2003 you should do the operations with the year 2002.  

Sólo un detalle más. El año chino no empieza a la vez que el de occidente. Así que si naciste en enero o al principio de febrero, para encontrar tu trigrama puede que tengas que trabajar con el año anterior al de tu fecha de nacimiento occidental. Por ejemplo, si naciste el 5 de enero de 2003, debes hacer los cálculos con el año 2002.

Nine is my favorite number. And one of the things I like about it is that there is an easy way to multiply it up to by ten.
