EASTER BASKETS AND MAY BASKETS / CESTAS DE PASCUA FLORIDA Y DE MAYO

   Easter baskets and May baskets can be a fun thing. We hope you got an Easter basket yesterday, full of painted eggs, chocolate eggs wrapped in colourful tinfoil, a toy bunny or lamb or chick and maybe some fancy Easter cookies. In Spain, godparents give their godchildren chocolate figures called  monas. The chikld gets as many as years it is old.   May baskets are a little different. They always bear flowers, most often wild spring flowers, but you can put some cookies or homemade jam in there too. You give them to neighbours you appreciate, or to someone you love. Or to someone you have a crush on and want to flirt with. The thing about May baskets is that the giver has to try to hide from the receiver. You leave the basket on the doorstep of the intended receiver's home, ring the doorbell and rush to hide. If there is a conveniently large tree nearby you can stay to spy and find out who opens the door and if the basket got to the person it was really meant for. Of course, if your intention is to flirt, you are likely to put something that can identify you in the basket or  let a bit of yourself be spied in turn while you run to hide. It will be up to the receiver to thank the spied giver or to pretend not to have seen who that was. Good luck with that we wish you.  

 Las cestas de pascua florida y de mayo pueden resultar muy divertidas. Esperamos que hayas recibido una cesta de pascua repleta de huevos pintados, otros de chocolate envueltos en papel de estaño de colorines, al menos un muñequito con forma de conejito, corderito o pollito y tal vez unas galletas propias de la estación. En España, los padrinos de un niño deben regalarle monas, esas figuritas de chocolate con formas primaverales. La costumbre es regalar al ahijado o ahijada tantas monas como años tiene la criatura. Las cestas de mayo son algo distintas. Siempre han de llevar flores, generalmente silvestres, pero también pueden incluir galletas o mermeladas caseras. Se regalan a los vecinos que aprecias, o a personas a las que quieres, También se pueden regalar a alguna persona con la que estás quedado o quedada y con la que quieres flirtear. Lo típico de este tipo de cesta es que el que la recibe no debe saber quién se la ha dado. Hay que dejar la cesta delante de la puerta de la casa del receptor, tocar el timbre y salir pitando para esconderse. Si hay por ahí cerca un árbol convenientemente grande, puedes espiar desde este para enterarte de quién ha abierto la puerta y si la cesta ha llegado o no al destinatario al que pretendías que llegase. Claro que si tu intención es flirtear, puedes meter algo que te delate en la cesta o dejar que te atisben cuando finges huir, como quién no lo quiere. Ahora le toca al que ha recibido la cesta darse por enterado o enterada de que has sido tú, o fingir que no se entera de nada. Buena suerte con eso te deseamos.

Mrs. Mortimer at the Book Fair / La Sra. Mortimer en la feria del libro

I coincided with Mrs. Mortimer at the Book Fair and if you are not already acquainted with her, I think I ought to introduce this illustrious colleague  to you. This 19th century teacher is said to have terrorized Victorian children with her books. Nevertheless, I am sure there were kids that found them fascinating. The one I brought home with me from the fair is based on several of her geography books. Today she is modern in the sense that there are still hordes of people like her of all nationalities and in all countries. I know this from my own experience. Even at a time when people who would once never have ventured to leave their tiny Spanish hometowns now vacation in Bali, I have been asked many peculiar questions about the places where I have lived and the way I look Only two examples: Was your house a tree? (Asked in Spain because I happen to be born in the Philippines) and What do you need such a long nose for? (asked in the Philippines because I have a European nose.)

Coincidí con la Sra. Mortimer en la feria del libro y si no es ya conocida vuestra, creo que debería presentaros ya mismo a esta ilustre colega. Se dice de esta maestra decimonónica que aterrorizó a los niños victorianos con sus libros. Pero aún así, algo me dice que hubo chiquillos que los encontraban fascinantes. El que me traje conmigo a casa está basado en varios de sus libros sobre geografía. Hoy en día sigue siendo actual en el sentido de que todavía hay gente como ella de todas las nacionalidades y en todos los países. Lo sé por experiencia propia. Incluso en tiempos en que gente que jamás otrora hubiese salido de su pueblecito español veranea en Bali, me han hecho preguntas peculiares tanto en como sobre los lugares en los que he vivido y sobre mi aspecto físico. Valgan de ejemplo: ¿Tú casa era un árbol? (preguntado en España porque nací en Filipinas)  y ¿Para que necesitas una nariz tan larga?(preguntado en Filipinas porque tengo una nariz europea). 

Among Mrs. Mortimer's pearls are ideas such as these:
- The Spanish language is the most beautiful of European languages, but there are few sensible books written in it.
- In Russia, only people who can run very fast dare to go out in the streets in winter. The rest would freeze and turn into statues.      
- If you don't like Lisbon when you stroll through its streets, you would like it even less if you lived there because it is full of insects that bite.
- The Turks look so serious that they appear to be intelligent.
- In all of Europe there are no cleaner people than the Dutch. If they didn't rub and scrub so much there would be rust on all their kettles.
And this is only to start with. It's not just about Europe. Africa, Asia, America and even Australia also receive her attention.

If political incorrection doesn't upset you more than it should, you will enjoy reading her.

Entre las perlas de la Sra. Mortimer encontrarás ideas como las siguientes: 
- La lengua española es la más bonita de Europa pero hay pocos libros sensatos escritos en ella.
- En Rusia, sólo los que pueden correr muy rápidamente se atreven a salir a la calle en invierno. Los demás se congelarían y convertirían en estatuas.
- Si no os gusta Lisboa cuando paseáis por sus calles, aún os gustaría menos esta ciudad si vivieseis allí, porque está llena de insectos que pican.
- Los turcos son tan serios que parecen inteligentes.
- En toda Europa, no hay gente más limpia que los holandeses. Si no frotasen y fregasen tantísimo, la humedad cubriría de óxido todas sus cacerolas de latón. 
Esto sólo para empezar. No sólo va de Europa. África, Asia, América y hasta Australia también reciben su atención.

Titanic Memorial Raffle / Sorteo Conmemorativo del Titanic



Today Sunday, April 15th, 2012  is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Tomorrow, Monday, we will raffle a few Vinolia soaps in class, exactly like the ones they used in the state rooms and Turkish baths of the Titanic, so that the fortunate winners can close their eyes and sniff it and imagine...that's up to them. You can get a huge big one if you are the best at singing the famous song of the film "Titanic" in perfect English without wandering too far out of tune.

Hoy domingo, 15 de abril, es el centenario del hundimiento del Titanic. Para conmemorar esta fecha mañana  lunes sortearemos unos cuantos jaboncitos Vinolia en clase, exactos a los que se utilizaban en los camarotes de primera y baños turcos del Titanic, para que los afortunados puedan cerrar los ojos e imaginarse que...eso es cosa de ellos. Te puedes llevar uno enorme si eres el/la que mejor canta la famosa canción de la película en perfecto inglés y sin desafinar demasiado.

American Women´s Club Bazaar:  From 12 a.m. to 19 p.m,  on Sunday, November 13th, at the Intercontinental Hotel, Paseo de la Castellana 49 (Subway Station Gregorio Marañon). The entrance ticket costs 5 euros but for kids under 12 entrance is free.  

Bazar del Club de Mujeres Norteamericanas: De 12 a 19, el domingo 13 de noviembre en el Hotel Intercontinental,  Paseo de la Castellana 49 (Metro Gregorio Marañon). La entrada cuesta 5 euros, pero los niños menores de 12 años entran gratis.

British Ladies´ Association Bazaar: From 12 a.m. to 18 p.m. on Sunday, November 27th, at Apartamentos Centro Norte, Mauricio Legendre, 16 (between Plaza de Castilla and Chamartin Station. The entrance ticket costs 3 euros for adults. For children from 3 to 10, one euro.

Bazar de la Asociación de Damas Británicas: De 7 a 18, el domingo 27 de noviembre en Apartamentos Centro Norte, Mauricio Legendre, 16 (entre la Plaza de Castilla y la Estación de Chamartin). La entrada de adultos cuesta 3 euros y la de niños de 3 a 10 años, un euro.

In both markets you will find a great variety of stands with first and secondhand articles at bargain prices. Plus you will be able to taste typical food of the countries that organize the bazaars. You might also win a prize in the raffles and Santa will drop by to chat with the kids. Both bazaars offer many interesting items, including clothes. We recommend books and table games because they are not easy to obtain in Spain at such prices.

En ambos mercadillos encontrarás gran variedad de puestos con artículos nuevos y de segunda mano a precios asequibles, podrás degustar comida típica del país que organiza el bazar, tal vez ganes un premio en las rifas y aparecerá Santa Claus que charlará con los niños. Entre uno y otro, ofrecen muchas cosas interesantes, incluyendo ropa. Recomendamos los libros y los juegos de mesa que son difíciles de conseguir a esos precios aquí en España.

My sister Thistle and I are planning a tea picnic. We lacked teacups, so we went shopping for them and bought ones we both liked - that's not easy - in a shop in Canterbury. The teacups are Bavarian and say the name they have in common is "Monika." The treasure hunting site where we found them is called "The Children's Society Shop." Everything there glows with a special little light.

Mi hermana Cardo y yo estamos preparando un té en plan picnic. No teníamos tacitas, así que salimos a buscarlas y compramos unas que nos gustan a las dos - eso no es fácil - en una tienda en Canterbury. Las tacitas son bávaras y dicen que el nombre que tienen en común es Monika. El lugar donde fuímos a buscar tesoros es "La Tienda de la Sociedad de Niños." Todo lo que hay allí brilla con una lucecita especial.

Name a star after you / Pon tu nombre a una estrella

Do you know you can name a star after you? Click on Name a Star. For less than thirty bucks you can give a star your name. Or you can name it after a friend or a loved one. If you can´t think of a gift for someone who has everything, this is at least original and they say it lasts forever.

But here you have the IAU refusing to sell star names and preferring to call a star by a number. Personally, I think star names should be sold and the money used to buy glasses for people who need but can´t afford them. They are the closest thing to a telescope.

Pero aquí están los de la IAU negándose a vender nombres de estrellas y prefiriendo identificarlas sólo por una cifra. Personalmente creo que se deben poder vender y comprar nombres para las estrellas y el dinero se debe utilizar para comprar gafas a los que no pueden pagar por ellas. Son lo más parecido a un telescopio.

Sweet Violets / Dulces Violetas

They´re here too, since the last days of February, the sweet violets.

Están aquí también, desde los últimos días de febrero, las dulces violetas.

They look blue in these pictures but they are really intensely purple when you´re up close.

Parecen azules en estas fotos pero son realmente violetas de cerca.

I visited the almondtree field too, and the trees were all in full bloom too.

También visité el almendral, y los árboles estaban todos en flor.

And you know what else ? I found another shoe. But no, it isn´t mine. So, is it yours?

I´m not having much luck finding my lost shoe, but at least I know where to find violet candy.
