Necessary Toora Chronicle / Crónica Toora Necesaria

Sitting on a small mount, Don Alonso and Arley are reading happily together.

Hey there, lad! Do you remember me? We met in July, 2022.

¡Eh, muchacho! ¿Te acuerdas de mí? Nos conocimos en el verano del 2022.

Of course I remember you. You are Caesar Borgia. The man whose motto was Caesar or nothing. I recorded out meeting in chapter 195 of  Tales of a Minced Forest.  What are you doing here?

As a disillusioned ghost, I am going from one place to another counselling people not to read Machiavelli´s book "The Prince."  You know how they say that book was written for or about me? Well, look how I ended up. Stabbed  more times than Julius Caesar.

Listen, my book can be read. What it can't be is used as a manual of instructions. I wrote it to portray a tyrant. Well, all tyrants. I couldn't state this openly because tyrants don't like to admit criticism. By the way, what are you two reading?

The Sermon on the Mount. People should read it more.

El Sermón del Monte. La gente debería leerlo más.

Yes.
Sí.

Discontent in the Garden / Descontento en el Jardin

Arley

We are the garden
A bunch of blooming plants
We are the garden
Our gardeners have feet
And boast they have a head
But most of all they have hands
One day they declare us weeds
And pluck us out at their will
To plant
Something else
Allowed to flower
In our place
We are the garden
A bunch of helpless plants
In an enclosed space

Somos el jardín
Un montón de plantas florecientes
Somos el jardín
Nuestros jardineros tienen pies
Y presumen de tener cabeza
Pero sobre todo tienen manos
Un día nos declaran malas hierbas
Y nos arrancan a su antojo
Para plantar
A otras
A las que permiten
Florecer en nuestro lugar
Somos el jardín
Un montón de plantas indefensas
En un espacio cerrado

Oberon

One, two, three, kick, Conga! One, two, three, kick, Conga!  Oh, my, Arley! You didn’t write that, did you? What a dreadful poem!

¡Un, dos, tres, patadita, conga! ¡Un, dos, tres, patadita, conga!
¡Caray, Arley! ¿No habrás escrito tú eso, verdad? ¡Que poesía más espantosa!

Vinny / Vicentico

No! It´s beautiful! I’m moved to tears!

¡No! Es preciosa. Me ha conmovido hasta hacerme llorar.

Frankie / Curro

It has made me glad to be a free plant living in a wild forest.

Oberon

Nonsense! It’s  worse out here! Haven’t you got anything better to be doing, son? Why are you out here alone?

¡Sandeces!

Arley

I´m not alone. I’m with my friends the Leafies.

No estoy solo. Estoy con mis amigos los Hojita.

Bob / Robertín

Right! We may be small and unimportant but we´re always here for those who need us.

¡Cierto!

Oberon

Where is that kid in red who is your girlfriend or something like that?

Arley

Rosina and Mum are busy fighting a war about the recycling business. They have no time to do anything but try to predict each other’s next mean move.

Oberon

Well, then come with me and help me find something I am looking for.

Arley

The missing Rhine gold?

¿El desaparecido oro del Rin?

Oberon

Nah! That gold sometimes changes hands but it always ends up back in its original hiding place sooner or later. It´s probably back there already.
What I’m looking for is my first love,  the Valkyrie Little Mathilda.

¡No!

Titania

Queen, eh?

Reina, ¿eh?

Puck

Only recycling queen. It´s not like she is trying to dethrone you.

Sólo reina del reciclado. No es como si estuviese intentando destronarte.

Titania

You have to start somewhere. Yes, yes, she´s trying to defy me! You know very well how hard I have worked to make homes in Apple Island for all those ungrateful garbage fairies. Better homes than they had too. But they don’t want to move there. They´re stubborn microscopic mules that insist on remaining in the mortal world at any cost, causing all kinds of trouble with the mortals.

Puck

She’s only recycling junk. I don’t see what the problem is.

Si sólo está reciclando basura. No veo cual es el problema.

Titania

Who owns the junk?

¿De quién es esa basura?

Puck

Well, that depends on how you look at things. On the one hand I could say the trash belongs to the humans, because they, without doubt, have created it. But they made it partly with materials the fairies consider their property.

Titania

So we can head for court to settle that! Let´s see what my husband thinks of this.

Oberon and the Rhine Dwarfs / Oberon y los duendes del Rin

Nun lasst uns aber wie daheim
                                                          Jestzt singen unsern Ringelreim…
So let us however as at home
Now sing our ring dance rhyme…

Así que ahora y como en casa,
Cantemos nuestra canción de danza en corro…

Titania

Listen, Oberon, will you stop fooling with your Norse drinking buddies and come over here to give me your very valuable opinion on Arley´s girlfriend? What do you think of her?

S
Oberon

The kid with the little red hood? Oh! Cute! A
really cute kid, and very sweet.

¿La nena de la caperucita roja?¡Ah! Pues muy mona. Una niña monísima, y muy dulce.

Titania

Are you saying this because you’ve been drinking? To begin with, she’s not a normal kid. She´s a mad scientist. I don’t trust any kind of scientists any more than they do me. Nor should you. They deny our existence. And to make matters worse, we haven’t even been able to look her straight in the eyes.  Or have you?

Oberon

Well…no. But I feel they must be big and blue. It´s what one expects.

Pues…no.

Titania

Are you out of your mind too? The least she’s got is crazed eyes. That´s why she always keeps them covered.  It could be worse, too. She might have mutant alien viper ray eyes that strike you dead on sight.
Who knows what she may have done to herself while experimenting?

Oberon

My mother didn’t like my first girlfriend either.

A mi madre tampoco le gustaba mi primera novia.

The Rhine Gold / El oro del Rin

Oberon

You know what, Titania? My first job was guardian of the gold of the Nibelungs. Back then I was under a spell that didn’t let me grow and my parents thought it would be best for me to live among my cousins  the dwarfs. But one day I grew to my present height and was politely fired. I left, but not before they had made me a shareholder in Rhine Gold, Inc, a very anonymous corporation. Every month they send me a check to pay my dividends. But this month it hasn´t arrived. Is there some kind of a traffic jam at the post office? I doubt it, because the mail has been arriving on time ever since my PM fell asleep and stopped flooding the postman with letters.

¿Sabes, Titania?

Titania

I´ve told you many a time not to tell me stories about your German origins. I don't like them. I was born both English and queen. Some of us do things right from the very start.

Puck

So, I´m back, Oberon! You sent me for the dividends of your shares in the gold of the Rhine enterprise. Well, I´ve got news for you. I´ve got bad news, and also…well, in my personal opinion, worse news. The bad news is the gold has disappeared. It was last seen floating towards Switzerland. The possibly worse news is that the dwarfs are growing out of proportion. They used to be up to my navel and now…

Oberon

Hm. Even running a circus is a risky business nowadays.

Titania

But why have you brought these overgrown dwarfs back with you? We don´t need more wee folk here. We have got kids. By the way, where are they?

Tenemos hijos. Por cierto, ¿dónde están?

Puck

Well, Titania, it so happens that while I was running this errand I also ran into two of your little girls, the inseparable ones. They were manufacturing screeching cucumbers of the kind Germans hang on Christmas trees. If you have no clue what those are, don´t worry because you´ll learn when they give you one on Christmas Eve. It´s not likely you´ll miss much not finding out sooner. And as for the boy Arley, he was back there too, but at a university, with his scientific girlfriend, who is set on becoming a recycling queen with the support of a tribe of Rubbishies. Or is it the other way around?

The Romantic Toximeter / El toxímetro romántico

Arley

Are you positive you want to do this? I´m very grateful you offered to come with me to dinner at the garbage dump. But as a way of celebrating Valentine´s Day it might leave something to be desired.

Rosina

Of course I’m positive! This wasn’t your idea. It was mine.

¡Claro que estoy segura! Si no ha sido idea tuya. Ha sido idea mía.

This way we will kill several birds with one stone. You have managed to draw me out of my lab, you know what a recluse I am and how I don’t like to go anywhere at all and we are going to have dinner together and in a place where I can try out my new toximeter.  It measures everything noxious.  Germs, lead, mites, the chances of catching trichinosis, you name it, this measures it!

Arley

I’m not sure about this. I don’t know if examining food you are being offered to see if you might get poisoned if you eat it is quite right. This could offend our hosts.

No sé.

Rosina

Nonsense! It´s not as if we were employing a mortal taster to find out if our food is poisoned like kings and emperors have. With this gadget, there is no need for anyone to drop dead.

And as for our hosts, why should they be offended? It is not insane and pointless experimentation we will be at. They would have to be pretty stupid not to appreciate the use of what I have got here. I will explain it all to them in such a way that even the least brilliant of the lot will understand. And I will even give them this toximeter as a gift. I have more back at the lab. You have no idea how happy you have made me, inspiring me to think of assisting to such a dinner. This will be the most interesting and productive of all the Valentine’s Day celebrations I have been to in my life.

Arley

Well…if you are happy, I am content.

Bueno… si tú estás contenta, yo estoy conforme.
