Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Acratopotes / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Acratopotes

Nauta

Here I am, ready to wish all of you a happy New Year's Eve from all of us of this blog. And to ensure that you have one, I will ask the three Charites, also known as the Graces, to look after you on this festive night with special care.

They are Aglaia, whose name means Brilliance and who will see to it you shine with a special light on this night, Thalia, whose name means Bloom and who is indispensable when a party has to be luxuriant and Euphrosyne, whose name means Merriment and who will see to it you have a lot of good fun. May the goddesses of fun and joy be with you on this eve and throughout the whole new year!

Acratopotes

And I, who am the demon of fine unmixed wine, want to give you some advice. Mind what you take tonight. Don´t let anyone sell you bad quality stuff or anything you shouldn´t have and most especially, don´t take more than you can take, because those who do have no fun nor do those who have to look after them. Ah! And if you are old enough to drink wine, wear an ivy wreath like I do. It will remind you  to stop drinking when it begins to threaten to slip off your head.

Not possible this year / No es posible este año

Arley

Sure I would like to tell everybody what I really would like to have for Christmas, but it just won´t be possible this year. The person who draws the Toora Chronicles fell in a hallway and broke a vertebra and had to be operated. Now much better, but impossible yet to be on time.We do wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and we take this first opportunity to thank the many people who have been so supportive.

Merry Christmas to all!

¡Feliz Navidad a todos!

O Christmas Tree / Oh, arbol de navidad

"O Christmas Tree," has as many versions as lovely branches. Originally a German love song, it celebrates fidelity thru the symbol of a tree that is ever green. Here are a few lines you can sing to the music..

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
How lovely are thy branches!
Not only green when summer glows,
But in the winter when it snows!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are thy branches!

St. Barbara, Christ's daughter,
With paper and holy water
Inscribed in Heaven's roll,
Do not let the lightning fall.

Santa Bárbara bendita,
que en el cielo estás escrita
con papel y agua bendita
En el ara de la cruz,
Pater noster, amén, Jesús.

It is traditional to recite the little prayer above enlisting St. Barbara´s help to avoid harm by lightning during a thunderstorm.

There are two legends about St. Barbara. One tells that she refused to marry a man her father had chosen for her. So he imprisoned her in a tower with three windows where she whiled away the hours reading. When he noticed she was decorating the tower with certain symbols, he realized his daughter was a Christian. He didn't hesitate to report her to the authorities, who wanted everyone in the Roman Empire to have the same religion and worship Jupiter. And when he saw that not even the government could bully her into thinking the way they wanted her to, he himself cut off her head with a sword. But this tale doesn't end here. The minute Barbara's tyrannical father had killed her, divine justice had him struck by lightning. From Barbara we can learn to defend what we believe in. From her father, not to blandish a sword - which is pointy and made of metal - during a thunderstorm.

The other legend holds that St. Barbara's father was an expert in explosives who had given his daughter a very liberal education and had even taught her all he knew about his trade. When he died, she went to live in a convent, which she left only to aid her people in a war against a cruel enemy. Barbara managed to blast this enemy to smithereens, but died in the final explosion.

Barbara's association with blasts of lightning and explosives have made her the patron saint of miners, who are familiar with dynamite, and of artillerymen, who fire cannons.

Letters / Cartas

Alpin

Wahhhh! Mum, I´m ill. I must have Alzheimer's disease. I can´t think of any more things to ask those guys who gave me tons of candy coal two years ago for!

¡Buahhhh! Mami, estoy enfermo.

Arley

Hulloh, Alpin. Hi, Mrs. Dullahan. Are you writing to the Magi too?

Hola, Alpin.

Aislene

Hi, honey. I´m writing a letter to my nephew Finbar, the master toymaker, telling him how badly I need a bodyguard for Alpin.

Hola, cielo.

Titania

Because Curmudgeon has gone off with that banyan tree kaphre. To be frank, I thought of hiring him myself, to keep an eye on one or another of my treasures. But he's too expensive.

Aislene

He hasn´t gone off with Salty. My nephew Finbar's wife, Lira the merrow, stole him from under our noses. She wants him to watch her husband closely, day and night. You know how she thinks Finbar is irresistible and all the women are after him.

The only truly irresistible man around here is my son Darcy, your coachman, who takes after his mother. Poor Finbar is a workaholic who only talks shop and that is enough to bore anyone.

Alpin

Toymakers must earn a lot for Finbar to be able to better Salty´s offer.

Aislene

They do pretty well, but it´s not Finbar that paid to have someone spy on him. He's not stir crazy, that´s his wife. Her daddy is the monarch of the seas and Salty is just a simple pirate, no matter how enterprising.

Alpin

Well then, aside from a pirate daddy who will give me monkeys and horses and coffers full of gold coins, I want a mermaid girlfriend. What about you Arley? What do you want for Christmas? Speak out! Don't hesitate and be shy! I need to know so I can ask for whatever you do too. I don't want to be left without. Ask for something! What do you want????

No te cortes y seas tímido. ¡Pide algo! ¿¿¿¿Qué quieres????

Happy birthday, Pippi / Feliz cumpleaños, Pippi.

Michael

You are 65 and aren´t thinking of retiring? I suppose the way things are right now the authorities would say you are a good example.

Pippilotta
Truth is I´ve never worked a day in my life. Just had fun.

Sólo me lo he pasado bien.

Michael

Way to go.

Así, sí.

If you feel too old for me, read me to your baby brother or sister this Christmas.

Si te sientes demasiado mayor para leerme, me puedes leer a tus hermanitos menores esta Navidad.

Breaking up / Rompiendo

Breaking up with your boyfriend/girlfriend vocabulary and phonetics. The sound ai, also known as the long i is what rhymes the most in this sixties song sung by teenage star of the moment Patty Duke.

Lyrics

Please don’t just stand there
Come and kiss me like before
Please don’t just stand there,
Looking down at the floor
If something is wrong, give me just one little sign
If there’s someone else, please tell me
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind

Once when we’d meet, you’d run to hold me tight
Life was so sweet until tonight
Please don’t just stand there
Get it over if we’re through
Please don’t just stand there
While my heart breaks in two

Knowing I care, how can you be so unkind?
Please stop hurting me and help me
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind

SPOKEN:

If it’s a game, I don’t want to play it;
And if it’s goodbye, why can’t you just say it?
Why make me cry like you do, how can you be so unkind?
Please start loving me or leave me
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind

(Don’t just stand there)

Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind
(Don’t just stand there)
Tell me what, what, what, what’s on your mind
(repeat and fade out)

Poppies in November / Amapolas en noviembre

On November 11, many people in Commonwealth countries wear a poppy in memory of those who have sacrificed their lives for them during wars. Why on November 11? Because on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent, thus proclaiming the beginning of the end of the First World War. This day was first called Armistice Day. An armistice is a truce, a temporary ceasing of hostilities so that warring parties can negotiate, and what they wanted to negotiate on this occasion was, by then, peace.

During this war many people lost their lives in battles fought in fields in Flanders. Five battles took place in the fields near the strategic town of Ypres in Belgium. The second of these happened in the spring when the fields were full of  poppies in bloom. It is said that the larks were the only birds that refused to leave the sky and kept flying over the blasting cannons and the men who were killing and dying. Many of the fallen soldiers were buried in these fields.Wooden crosses were planted on their graves which were surrounded year after year by poppies. Many people travelled there to visit the graves of their loved ones. When they returned home, they had vivid memories of the white crosses and the red poppies.

Below is a video of a poem written by a Canadian physician named John McCrae when he saw a twenty-two year old friend of his dead among the poppies. It is one of the most famous poems of World War I.

The First World War was called "the war to end all wars," and many people decided to fight it precisely for this reason. But you can't end wars with a war, and in no time some people were so angry about how this last war had ended that the Second World War took place. That is when Armistice Day became Remembrance Day and unfortunately for everybody there have been new people to remember practically every year after that. We don´t approve of violence at all, but if unpleasantness does occur and someone defends you, it is only natural to be grateful.

One day we will try to do it better, but for the meantime, this poem can be translated more or less like this:

Questions:  / Preguntas:

1. What is Poppy Day? / ¿Qué es el Día de las Amapolas?
2. When did the First World War end? / ¿Cuándo terminó la Primera Guerra Mundial?
3. What is the purpose of an armistice? / ¿Cuál es el propósito de un armisticio?
4. Where did some of the most famous battles of the First World War take place?
5. Why did many people visit Belgium after the First World War?
6. When was Armistice Day renamed Remembrance Day?
And the prize question is: In spring and among larks and poppies, what do you think is the real quarrel of all the people - yes, all - who fell on Flanders fields?

Nauta's Mini Mythology - Amphion and Orpheus / Mini mitología de Nauta - Anfión y Orfeo

Nauta

Hello. It is now November and the one thing there is plenty of in this month is falling leaves. Whenever I look at a tree in Autumn I am reminded of two fellows that sang really well.

Hola.

This is Amphion. Whenever he sang, trees danced. Yes, they liked his music. They are not running away. That´s all I´m going to tell you about him.

Tennyson

’Tis said he had a tuneful tongue,
Such happy intonation,
Wherever he sat down and sung
He left a small plantation...

Se dice que su voz era melodiosa
Y tan feliz su intonación,
Que al sentarse para cantar cualquier cosa
A su alrededor dejaba una plantación...

Byron

It's the first of November. This blog should be posting on Don Juan. That's tradition.

Zorrilla

I believe they first want to visit my house in Valladolid. Maybe they´ll be ready next year.

Nauta

We'll try and do something about that next year, gentlemen. Right now I was going to do Orpheus and Eurydice. It's a sad story, but quite apt to listen to in melancholic autumn. They were very much in love, and wandered through fields and woods together, he singing, she dancing around him. His voice was so beautiful that all things animate and inanimate responded to it. It made stones move and changed the courses of  rivers. But one day Eurydice stepped on a viper that retaliated by biting her foot and that was the end of their bucolic bliss. Poor Eurydice went straight to Hades, where things are so dark and gloomy that nobody feels much like dancing.

Orpheus couldn't resign himself to living without her. It is not difficult to enter Hades, unless you want to do it alive. But Orpheus entered singing and no one stopped him, so mesmerized were all the inhabitants of the underworld by his fantastic voice. He got to go all the way up to Queen Persephone and King Hades Pluto unmolested. In his song, he asked them to return Eurydice to him. Moved to tears of iron, Hades agreed to do it. But there was one condition. Orpheus would walk out of Hades without once looking back to see if Eurydice was following him. Orpheus should have waited until he was well out of Hades before looking back, but he looked back too soon. Eurydice was still in the cavern and she was sucked back into the darkness crying a sad farewell. There was no second chance for Orpheus, who wandered alone making stones cry with his tragic songs until he met his own death. Sob.

Sniff.

Christoph Willibald Gluck

I composed an opera about Orpheus and Eurydice in three acts, with a chorus and dances. It was first performed in Vienna in 1762.

Mini Quiz

1. What happened when Amphion sang? / ¿Qué pasaba cuanto Anfión cantaba?
2. Where did Mr. Zorilla have a house that is now a museum?
3. Why did Eurydice die? / ¿Por qué murió Eurídice?
4. What did Hades Pluto do when he heard Orpheus sing? / ¿Qué hizo Hades Plutón cuando escuchó cantar a Orfeo?
5. Why did Eurydice have to return to the underworld?
6. Who mentioned Amphion in a  poem and who composed an opera about Orpheus and Eurydice?

Byron

I have a question. Shouldn´t that "sung" in "whenever he sat down and sung" be "sang"?

Tengo una pregunta. Ese "sung" ¿no es participio? ¿Y no debería ser "sang," pasado simple?

Michael´s 2010 Halloween Party / Fiesta de Halloween 2010 de Michael

Leafies / Hojitas

Havah happy Halloween!

¡Papasad un feliz Halloween!

Glorvina

Wooooooooooooooooe!

¡Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Aislene

Well, the party is sure off to a good start if the banshee begins to wail. What was that about? Oh, who cares! As I was saying,  my advice to mothers is, get your children a bodyguard. I´ve never enjoyed a summer as much as I have the past. Relax! Relax! Relax! That's all I´ve done.

¡Relajarme! ¡Relajarme! ¡Relajarme! Eso es todo lo que he hecho.

Lira

I´m thinking maybe I should get someone to watch my husband.  But it has to be someone I can trust. Is Curmudgeon available?

Estoy pensando que tal vez debería contratar a alguien para vigilar a mi marido. Pero tiene que ser de fiar. ¿Está disponible Cascarrabias?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Binks, now that we´ve had a couple of drinks and mean to have some more, it´s time for a toast! To the headmaster of your dream school!

Mungo Binky

Curmudgeon Finn? Well, I know Curmudgeon can now read, but I´m not sure he will be adequate. This isn´t a regular school. This is a school to teach the fairy people how to coexist with humans. What does Finn know about humans?

¿Cascarrabias Finn?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Curmudgeon! Curmudgeon indeed! ´Tis me, the man here before you, that is your man, Binky! I, I am the man! I taught Curmudgeon how to read! I gave him a reason to learn! That´s motivation, Binky! I´m the best of teachers! I´m the top! I´m the tower of Pisa! I´m the Mona Lisa! I´m Napoleon Brandy! And all that jazz.

¡Cascarrabias! ¡Yo! ¡Yo soy el hombre! Yo enseñe a leer a Cascarrabías. ¡Le di un motivo para aprender! ¡Eso sí que es motivar, Binky! ¡Soy el mejor de los maestros! ¡Soy el no va más! ¡Soy la torre de Pisa! ¡Soy la Mona Lisa! ¡Soy brandy Napoleón! Y todo lo demás.

Mungo Binky

Oh. Oh, I see. What can I say? Erh, I´m sure you´re a born teacher, Boogerbeard. But we´ve got to give credit where it's due. If Michael hadn´t given Curmudgeon the video and Curmudgeon hadn´t had the patience to watch it over a thousand times... But, in any case, like I said, I need someone who understands humans and...don´t be offended, please, but I was thinking of someone who might give the impression of being a little more...respectable.

Oh. Oh, entiendo.

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

But that´s why I want to do this. To turn respectable! Look here, Binks. I understand human motivation better than anyone does. I´m perfect for this! But there is one condition. Those who flunk get eaten. By me. There´s no other way I will do this, because it´s the only way that works.

Pero por eso quiero hacer esto. ¡Para volverme respetable! Mira, Binquito.

Mungo Binky

I...I don´t see how I can meet that requirement. It doesn´t seem fair to make school compulsory and then devour the underachievers.

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

What! Name another way of getting people who don´t want to learn to learn! Name one! There´s no other way! Binks, if you don´t see things my way, I´m bound to feel hurt. And let me warn you, Binks, I don´t take kindly to being disappointed. And there´s a lot of villains very similar to me out there who will want to know why I´m not good enough for you and your school. The Vicious Villains' Society will want to know why I can´t be headmaster of your school, Binks. You´ll have a lot of explaining to do and...Hardy, har, har, Binks! You´re going yellow-green! It´s a joke, mate! You don´t understand my sense of humour!

Mungo Binky

What do I have to laugh at? What you just said or what you said before that?

Salty Boogerbeard / Saladito Barbamocos

Someone like me has better things to do than teach, Binks! You know what they say. If you can do, do. And if you can´t do, teach. Since we are drinking together, I will reveal to you my secret plans! I mean to bring gas and electricity to Bumps Island. I´m going to build a power station or two there so those nitwits can live by night without losing more neurons. On a sunny island like that, they don´t need artificial lighting for anything. It´s like selling ice to the Eskimos But since the Bumps are stupid, let them learn to pay bills and make me rich!

Curmudgeon Finn / Cascarrabias Finn

And Salty is letting me in on this. Now that I know how to read, I´m just the person to supervise the construction of the power plants and to run them once they´re ready. Salty´s going to give me half the benefits.

Basiliska

Curmudgeon, you hunk! How nice to see you again!

¡Cascarrabias, tío bueno! ¡Qué estupendo volverte a ver!

Mungo Binky

And you, Boogerbeard, are going to call this progress?

¿Y usted, Barbamocos, va a llamar a esto progreso?

Arley

Achooo!

¡Achís!

Leafy Thaddeus / Tadeo Hojuela

Binky is conspiring with developers! Get them!

Michael

It wouldn´t be my Halloween party without a fight. Well, have a happy Halloween, you who can.

Mildew Finn

Today is library day. Although it is Sunday, the Job Hobbs Library is open. Actually, it is always open on Sundays, because Sunday is a very good day to visit a library. We're open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There may be people who say I haven't got a life, but they're wrong. I have an infinite number of lives. You multiply your lives when you read.

So, take one from the shelves.

Así que saca uno de las estanterías.
