Zadok the Priest / Sadoc el sacerdote

Those of you who have watched the very interestsing coronation of Charles III on TV have had the chance to listen to Zadok the Priest, a British hymn composed for the coronation of George II. This piece has been played at every British coronation since and is a highlight of these ceremonies. Its lyrics are very simple. There is below a link to a video. This video has subtitles in both English and Spanish, so you can follow the words of the coronation anthem easily. Above, an image of the bottle of the oil used to anoint the new king. Below, Zadok anointing King Solomon.

George Frederic Handel was born in Halle, Germany in1685. His father wanted him to study law, but he insisted on being a musician and managed to attract the attention of important people who helped him do this. All his life he alternated sacred and profane music. He was, for example and for a time, organist at the Calvinist cathedral in Halle and on the other hand travelled to Italy to learn all aout Italian Opera.

In 1711 Handel went to London, where he became director of London's Opera House. We won't go into all he did there, but only say that he was mostly successful in England, until 1734 when he suffered a stroke that left him speechless and deprived him of the use of four of the fingers of one of his hands. He managed to recover and was invited to Ireland, where he was asked to give concerts meant to benefit local hospitals. Handel loved Dublin and its people, and it was here that he composed his probably most famous work, a dramatic oratorio in the English language. The Messaiah was played in public for the first time on April 13, 1742 in the New Music Hall at Fishamble Street. It was sung by 26 boys and five men from the choirs of the cathedrals of St. Patrick and of the Most Holy Trinity. Handel's Festival, Messaiah on the Street,  takes place every year in Temple Bar in Dublin. It can be good fun, whether you like baroque music or not, and we recommend it.

Handel eventually became a British subject and died rich and respected. So respected that he had a funeral with full state honours and is buried in Westminster Abbey. This man is also remembered for having helped less fortunate musicians and many other people. He is still making many happy with the music he left behind him.

How to be Mayor / Como ser alcalde

 Sancho

What does one need to be mayor?

¿Qué hace falta para ser alcalde?

Don Quijote

According to what I have read, a cat.

Según he leído, un gato.

Dick Whittington / Ricardito Whittington

That is so. I was thrice Lord Mayor of London thanks to my cat.

Así es. Yo llegué a ser Señor Alcalde de Londres tres veces gracias a mi gato.

The Mayor-Making Cat / El gato que puso un alcalde

I´m going to tell you the story of how I made Dick mayor of London.

Dick was a poor orphan who had heard that the streets of London were paved with gold. Since he didn´t have anything better to do, he thought it might be a good idea to go to London and make his fortune there.

When he reached London he soon saw that the streets were made of cobbles, dirt and mud. He was tired and hungry and had no money and no place to sleep. Fortunately for him, a rich merchant named Mr. Fitzwarren took pity on him and let him sleep in the garret of his fine house. Unfortunately for him, the garret was full of rats.

It was very dangerous to have a rat bite you back then because you might catch the plague as a result and there was no cure for this. With the first money Dick earned in London, he bought a cat. The cat - that is, I - was a splendid hunter and soon there were no rats in the garret nor anywhere in Mr. Fitzwarren´s fancy home.

One day Mr. Fitzwarren told Dick and his other servants that he was about to travel to distant lands to engage in trade there and try to make more money that way. He advised them to send something of theirs on his ship. He would try to make money for them with it. Dick had nothing but his cat, that is, but me. He didn´t want to lose me, but he felt obliged to send something with Mr. Fitzwarren.

As soon as  Mr. Fitzwarren had sailed away, Sarah, the cook, who had never liked Dick, began to make life impossible for him. Dick felt so oppressed that he finally decided to leave Mr. Fitzwarren's home and London.

On his way out of London, just when he had reached Highgate Hill, the Bells of Bow began to ring. Dick stopped to listen to them thinking it would be the last time he would hear them. Suddenly, to his surprise, the bells spoke to him. "Turn again, Whittington, once Lord Mayor of London," they sang. "Turn again, Whittington, twice Lord Mayor of London! Turn again, Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London!"

Dick turned back and learned that Mr. Fitzwarren´s ship had returned. The Sultan of Barbary, whose palace was infested with rats had paid a fortune for Dick´s cat, that is, for me. Dick was now rich enough to marry Mr. Fitzwarren´s daughter, Alice, and become this gentleman´s business partner. Dick was so successful that he got to be Lord Mayor of London not just once, but three times. And he bought me back from the sultan, as you can see in the engraving below. We were even buried in the same church, St. Michael Paternoster Royal!

The Lambeth Walk / El Andar de Lambeth

Here's a song about London's Lambeth street from a musical about Cockneys called "Me and My Girl." It first run in 1937 and it was said that while dictators raged and statesmen talked, all Europe danced - to the Lambeth Walk!

Lambeth you have never seen (Nunca has visto Lambeth)
The skies aint´t blue, the grass ain´t green (Los cielos no son azúles, la hierba no es verde)
It hasn´t got the Mayfair touch (No tiene el toque de Mayfair)
But that don't matter very much.(Pero eso no importa mucho)
We play the Lambeth way, (Nosotros jugamos al estilo de Lambeth)
Not like you but a bit more gay (No como vosotros, sino algo más alegre)
And when we have a bit of fun (Y cuando nos divertimos)
Oh, boy! (¡Caray!)
Anytime you're Lambeth way (Siempre que andes por Lambeth)
Any evening, any day, (Cualquier noche, cualquier día)
You'll find us all doin' the Lambeth walk. Oi!
Ev'ry little Lambeth gal (Toda muchachita de Lambeth)
With her little Lambeth pal, (Con su amiguito de Lambeth)
You'll find 'em all doin' the Lambeth walk.Oi!
Ev'rything's free and easy, (Todo es libre y relajado)
Do as you darn well pleasey, (Haz lo que te plazca)
Why don't you make your way there, (¿Por qué no te diriges allí?)
Go there, stay there, (Vas allí. Te quedas ahí)
Once you get down Lambeth way, (Una vez que llegues a Lambeth)
Ev'ry evening, ev'ry day,(Cualquier noche, cualquier día)
You'll find yourself doin' the Lambeth walk. Oi!

The Pearly King / El Rey Perlito

What are the couple on the cover of this record dressed us?

More than 135 years ago a thirteen year old boy named Henry Croft left the orphanage in which he had been brought up and began to earn a living as a sweeper in a market. There he made friends with the costermongers, apple sellers with a lot of personality. The clothes the costermongers wore were peculiar. They were in the habit of sewing pearl buttons to their trousers, vests, jackets and caps to distinguish themselves from other workers. Aside from being picturesque, these apple vendors were very supportive and looked after mates who were in trouble. Henry also wanted to do something to help others and began to raise funds for the children of his old orphanage. He realized that to raise money he had to attract attention and he started by changing his look. He sewed all the pearl buttons he found while sweeping to his clothes and people began to call him the Pearly King. By the time Harry died, he had raised more than five thousand pounds for different institutions, the equivalent of two hundred thousand of today´s pounds. He had become a famous person and many families from his neighborhood had followed his example, filling their clothes with buttons (some of these suits have more than ten thousand buttons and weigh about thirty kilos) and collaborating with orphanages, hospitals and churches. These persons called themselves pearly kings and queens. Parents are succeeded by their children, who continue their supportive labor and a tradition that the Cockneys, neighbors of London's East End, are very proud of.

And in the next post, learn how they walk in Lambeth, Cockney territory, doing The Lambeth Walk!
