Wildflowers and Mabel / Flores silvestres y Mabel

We´re late for Book Day, but here are two books we bought that we can recommend if you want to read in English.

This month of May, go gather flowers out in the fields and know what you are gathering with this little guidebook. We’re allergic to pollen but we’ve always done this anyway, loaded with antihistamines. After all, we may only live once, who knows?

And for the summer, there is Peck’s good little girl, Mabel. Read it and feel five years old again and learn vocabulary or read it to your little brothers and sisters if you have any. They should be grateful.

Listening: Both read and listen. Aren't you lucky? While you are reading your copy of Mabel's adventures, you can listen to what you are reading by clicking here: Libri Vox Mabel.

Indignation and Erysichthon / Indignación y Eresictón.

Nauta

It has reached our ears that Latin and Greek have been kicked out of school. Humanities in general are considered a waste of time. Small wonder things are going so badly.  Of course, this is the work of  people who are no longer or never have been human. To deprive others of their souls is the worst thing one can do. The devil wouldn't be buying up souls if it weren't. To be deprived of one's soul is the worst thing that can happen to one. People are now supposed to think they are nothing but cells that can end up in Frankenstein's lab.I am so upset about this, that I am back. But I will probably only be telling atrocious tales from now on. Those unpleasant  tales I once avoided telling can also teach lessons. Our illustrator, however, refuses to illustrate them the way one would expect. So for the first of these tales we only have a drawing of an oak covered with votive garlands, of the Oak Dryad peering from within the tree and of Princess Mestra turning  herself into a butterfly in happier times.May Demeter take action and give the antihumanists what for!

Erysichthon was a fool with power who destroyed all the trees of a grove to build a banquet hall for himself and his rowdy friends to celebrate in. All trees are sacred, but the trees of this grove were consecrated to Demeter, goddess of agriculture and therefore under her direct protection.

The men Erysichthon had ordered to cut down these trees stopped in their tracks before an enormous oak covered with votive wreaths and other offerings placed there by people whose prayers had been answered by Demeter. Mad as a wild beast because his orders were not being obeyed, this unworthy king of Thessaly grabbed an axe and cut the tree down himself.

When he killed the tree, he also killed its nymph, a dryad who was much loved by Demeter. As she died, the dryad cursed Erysichthon. Demeter heard her and summoned Limos, demon of hunger. This evil spirit introduced itself in Erysichthon's bowels and made itself comfortable there.

The king began to feel ravenous hunger. He ate up all the food he had at hand, devoured all the food in his palace, then all there was in his realm. He spent all the money he had buying food, of which he never had enough. He sold all his belongings to obtain more food and finally all he had left to sell was his daughter Mestra.

Mestra was under the protection of Poseidon, god of the sea, who had granted his favorite the gift of shape-shifting. When Erysichthon sold her for the first time, she turned into a donkey and fled from her buyer in this guise. She returned to her father who managed to sell her a second time. This time she escaped in the shape of a butterfly. Erysichthon was able to sell his daughter several times to feed himself, but even this was not enough to sate his hunger.

Erysichthon felt so hungry he began to fear he might eat Mestra up. Rather than eat his daughter, Erysichthon decided to devour himself. It was probably the first time this selfish king thought of anyone instead of of himself. He cut off one of his arms and ate it, and followed suit until he died and in this way put an end to his suffering.

Michael

I only want to say that in ancient times, when good people had to cut down a tree, always out of great necessity, they first asked for its permission. They said something like, "Please let me have some wood to warm my home. I will let you have some too when I myself become a tree." Yes, people who were buried in earth became plants, maybe trees.

Two from Concord / Dos de Concord

Yes, David, Daniel and Xavier. I am Henry David Thoreau.

Sí, David, Daniel y Javier. Soy Henry David Thoreau.

No. My name is Louisa, but my family name isn´t Addams. And Christmas won´t be Christmas without me. I´ll give you a new clue. My father was a friend of Thoreau´s and he also opposed slavery and the Mexican-American War.

I - Why do we remember Mr. Thoreau? / ¿Por qué recordamos al Sr. Thoreau?

For at least two good reasons. / Por lo menos por dos buenas razones.

The first is that he wrote an essay called "On Civil Disobedience." It inspired many people, including Ghandi and Martin Luther King.

Inspiró a muchas personas, incluyendo a Ghandi y a Martin Luther King.

Thoreau lived in 19th century America at a time when slavery was legal in many states of that nation. Thoreau was an abolitionist. That means he wanted to abolish slavery, to put an end to it.

His country got into a war with Mexico known as the Mexican-American War. Many people believed that as a result of this war, slavery would be extended to more parts of the territory of the United States.

Thoreau didn´t want that to happen, but there didn´t seem to be much he could do about it. What he did was stop paying taxes as a way of protesting.

He was put in jail for doing this but one of his aunts paid the taxes in his name and he was released in a few days.

Thoreau was angry about being released in this way and he began to write his famous essay to tell the world that when a government was bad, people had to face up to it and demand change. Jail was the place for a just person to be in if a government was unjust.

The other reason why Thoreau is remembered is because he was one of the first ecologists.

For two years Thoreau left "civilization" behind and went to live by himself in a tiny cabin on the banks of Walden Pond.

In the Walden woods he experimented a simple way of life that he believed to be much healthier and saner than life in crowded cities. He wrote a book about this called "Walden."

http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/walden/index.htm

While he was at Walden Pond he documented everything that happened there during the four seasons.

He jotted down everything he observed and experienced in notebooks that are very valuable to students of natural history. He documented local fauna and flora. There are at least 1905 species of flora and fauna in this area.

A lot of people think Thoreau was a sage and an example to be followed, but not everybody liked him.

It isn´t only unjust governments that dislike Mr. Thoreau. Some people, like Robert Louis Stevenson, said his ideal way of living was very boring and didn´t contribute to progress.

But it is possible to have progress and live ecologically too. And if putting a stop to slavery and living ecologically isn´t progress, we would like to know what is.

Exercises: Description of a place.
Use a dictionary or bug your teacher. Maybe he/ she will listen to you.

If your level is at least intermediate, based on the photos, describe both the exterior and the interior of Thoreau´s cabin. Then describe the woods and the pond where it is located. Next, try to join both descriptions in one essay. Call it "Looking at Pictures of Walden Pond."

If your level is advanced, write an composition about how you would feel living by yourself at Walden Pond during the four seasons. It´s not just about feeling cold or hot or lonely. Would you learn anything from living in this way? Would you feel you had really lived?

If you are a beginner, you might want to do something more simple. Try these exercises:

1. Match these words with their Spanish equivalents. It´s ok to guess. That´s a way of learning. If you make a mistake, you learn from your mistake.
___1. owl
___2 mushroom
___3. blue chickory
___4, duck
___5. lady´s slipper
___6. toad
___7. primrose
___8. pond

a. sapo
b. pato
c. seta
d. lago
e. zapatilla de dama
f. achicoria azul
g. buho
h. prímula

2. Use "there is" or "there are" to write sentences about the plants and animals in Walden Pond and its woods. Example: 1. There are fishes in the pond.

3. Write negative sentences about animals you don´t think there could possibly be in Walden Pond and its woods. Example: 1. There aren´t any lions in Walden Woods. 2. There isn´t a whale in Walden Pond.

4.. Match these words with their Spanish equivalents:
___1. table
___2. bed
___3. chair
___4. pitcher
___5. firewood
___6. trunk
___7. fireplace
___8. sheet
___9. blanket

a. cama
b. baul
c. chimenea
d. silla
e. manta
f. mesa
g. jarra
h. sabana
i. leña

5. Use "Is there...?" and "Are there...?" to write questions about things that there are or aren´t in Mr. Thoreau´s cabin. Example: 1. Is there a bed? 2. Is there a telephone?

6. With one of your classmates, practice speaking by asking and answering the questions you wrote in exercise 4.

7. What are the names of the four seasons?

Prize Question: What is the name of the two little animals in one of the photos?
We got the pictures we used to illustrate this post from the Internet. We learned that some are by a photographer called Scott Miller who did an exhibit on Thoreau at Harvard. Thoreau studied there. No, he wasn´t rich. He was clever.

II - This space reserved to write about the other person from Concord. Hurry up and identify her.
