It takes two to make a pair. / Hacen falta dos para hacer un par.

Don Quijote

Michael, what are you doing?

Michael, ¿qué estas haciendo?

Michael

I´m looking for one of my shoes. Whenever I have a little time to spare, I look for my lost shoe.

I look for it everywhere, because it could be anywhere.
It has to be somewhere.

Don Quijote

I noticed you only wore one, but I didn´t say anything because I thought it was an excentricity of yours. If you can´t find it, why don´t you just wear another pair?

Michael

I wish I could! You see, a leprechaun´s shoes are not just any kind of shoes. We receive a pair as a gift when we are born and they usually last us all our lives.

We leprechauns are both bankers and shoemakers. As bankers, we are in charge of protecting the gold that belongs to the fairy community. Fairies aren´t rich. Nor are we interested in making money.

We don´t use gold among ourselves. We keep some to use in our dealings with humans, who love gold. Most times, we use it to pay unscrupulous mortals ransoms so they will release members of the fairy community that they have kidnapped.

Don Quijote

There are quite a few unscupulous mortals. I understand that´s why you keep away from us.
But what happened to your shoe?

Michael

In truth, I lost both my shoes. But I was able to make myself a new one. Only one, because a leprechaun can never make a pair of shoes. He can only make one.

The leprechaun who wants to make a pair, needs to find another leprechaun who will make the other. We are very independent, solitary creatures. You rarely see two or more leprechauns together. But everyone needs help from other people. And so we won´t forget that, tradition rules that we must ask for help when we want a pair of shoes, since without shoes, you can´t really get anywhere.

I made myself a new shoe but...I can´t make a pair on my own.

Don Quijote

How did you lose your shoe?

¿Como perdiste el zapato?

Michael

It´s a long and embarassing story, but if you don´t mind listening, I´ll tell it.

Don Quijote

Yes, please. I would like to hear it.

Sí, por favor. Me encantará escucharla.

Michael

Now that you know most of my relatives, you might be wondering why my father wasn´t at my Halloween party.

The truth is, we´ve fallen out. So he decided to celebrate Halloween elsewhere. To be precise, at a pub in Manchester. Perhaps you remember that my brother Finbar had to go fetch him. And that his wife Lira Ronan was very upset about it, and ranted all night.

Don Quijote

Actually, yes. It is hard to forget.

Pues sí. Es difícil de olvidar.

Michael

Well, my father likes to celebrate lots of things besides Halloween. In fact, he parties all the time.
If he celebrates at a pub we, his family, are acquainted with, the owners often have the deference to call us when he needs help to get home.

A few months ago, my father was celebrating because his favorite football team, from Drogheda, had won an important game. The owners phoned me around midnight and I went to fetch him.

This particular pub is located on the side of a very lonely and spooky road. The moon was new, which means it wasn´t there at all. I didn´t have my glowworm lantern with me - my glowworms had taken the night off and gone to watch the football game with my father - and I couldn´t see a thing. I was advancing very slowly... very cautiously... very prudently...when...Pow! Suddenly, I was flying in the air.

When I hit the ground, for a second I didn´t know where I was. Then two lanterns full of glowworms suddenly lit up and shone in my eyes, blinding me. And I heard my father´s voice shout: "What are ye doing lying there on the ground with your arse on the heather? Are ye daft or what? You´ll catch blooming pneumonia. "

I realized I had been hit by my father´s jaunting car. I got up and checked to see if I was alright, and found I was, except for a few bruises and that I had lost my shoes. I started to look for them, but I had to keep an eye on my father at the same time. And except for the spots illuminated by the lanterns my father has tied to his jaunting car, I couldn´t see a thing.

So I decided I would take him home and return at dawn to search for my shoes. My father didn´t want to let me drive. He insisted he could do it himself, but, of course, I didn´t let him.

We got into a tremendous fight on the way home because he had been driving without asking the gloworms to light up, and I said he was very irresponsible and had to mend his ways. And he took offence.

Fergus MacLob O´Toora

Is it speaking ill of me ye are again? Me own son?

¿Me propio hijo?

Michael

I, ill of you? I´m only speaking the truth. What are you doing here? You can´t come into my blog speaking like that.

Fergus

Och! I can´t speak like an Irishman on me son´s English blog? Is that what you are saying?

¡Och!

Michael

You´ll confuse me pupils. Erh, I mean, my pupils.

Confundirás a mes discípulos. Eh, es decir, a mis discípulos.

Fergus

Fine! But confused it is you are yourself! Speaking English like the English on a blog! Arrghhh! Is it on that Englishwoman´s payroll that you are? What kind of a leprechaun are you? Sure and you´ll be the death of me, you will!

¡Bien!

Michael

Me, the death of you? You were almost the death of me.

¿Yo, matarte a ti? ¡Casi me matas tú a mi!

Fergus

There ye go again! ´Tis exaggerating ye are! Never in all me life have I ever seen anyone who likes to exaggerate like ye do. But, ´tis an elegant blog ye´ve got here, though, I must say. I´ve never seen or been in one as elegant in me life.

Michael

Of course you haven´t. You´ve never seen or been in a blog before. Where did you park your jaunting car? In the middle of the Internet?

¿Donde has aparcado tu carro irlandés? ¿En medio de Internet?

Fergus

Ah, the Internet! ´Tis a grand invention, it is. All full of addresses of Irish pubs worldwide, every one of which I mean to visit. ´

¡Ah, Internet!

´Twas yer cousin Darcy brought me here, on his fine horse. He wanted to show me his picture that ye put on the web, and him so handsome. Ye know how well he thinks of himself.

I left me jaunting car safe at home, where ´tis being repaired because of the harm ye´ve done it.
He dejado mi carro a salvo en casa, donde está siendo reparado debido al daño que le has hecho.

Michael

I?

¿Yo?

Fergus

Sure, ye´ve knocked it inside out when ye run into it, never looking where ye were going, charging against it like a raging bull!

Michael

I? You can´t be serious. How can you say such things? You´re not only irresponsible, you´re impenitent as well! And you are laughing at something that could have had serious consequences. If I were mortal, I would have had to report you to the police before you harmed someone else. And I would have, too!

¿Yo?

Fergus

Report your father to the police! Would you, you traitor? As if I could harm me own son! And what harm have I done you, may I ask? ´Tis well enough you are to insult your father!

¿Denunciar a tu padre a la policía? ¿Lo harías, traidor? ¡Como si yo pudiese hacerle daño a me propio hijo! ¿Y puedo preguntarte que daño te he hecho?

Michael

I´m not insulting you! I´m asking you to be a little less featherbrained. Look at me! Limping all over the place! And it could have been worse. I could have suffered a trauma and become one of those phantom hitchhikers that stop drivers on dark roads.

No te estoy insultando.

Fergus

You could walk perfectly well if you had a second shoe. And you could have a new shoe if you apologized for insulting me.

Michael

Apologize? Me? You ask me what kind of a leprechaun I am. Well, look at you. You´re the kind of leprechaun that makes us all look like irascible, irresponsible loons.

¿Disculparme? ¿Yo? Me preguntas que clase de léprecan soy. Pues mirate a ti mismo.

Most respectable leprechauns stay at home, where they are needed, so it´s only philanderers like you that wander off to human taverns and make trouble there, and get into trouble there. And then we, the respectable silent majority, have to go and rescue you and maybe pay your kidnappers a ransom with the gold that belongs to our community.

Fergus

Are you saying you spend your money on ransoming us? Because we lose no time in stealing it back again, and you never lose a cent, you greedy, selfish misers!

Michael

It´s not that! It´s how you can´t look after yourselves. And you never thank us for it!

Don Quijote

Michael, why don´t you introduce me to your father before one of you says something he might regret? I know a tavern in Valdepeñas where I would like to buy your father lunch. Maybe we can have a little talk and I might persuade him to make you a new shoe.

Fergus

Did I hear the word "tavern"?

¿He oído la palabra "taberna"?

Don Quijote

I only drink a little wine with my meals because in my time water was often undrinkable, full of germs and quite unsanitary. It was safer to drink wine. But today, it is definitely safer to drink water.

Michael

Father, may I introduce you to Mr. Alonso Quijano, also known as Don Quijote de la Mancha? Mr. Quijano, this is my father, Fergus MacLob O´Toora.

Fergus

I thought it might be Don Quijote! You´re the spitting image of yourself, sir! I´m very pleased to meet you!

Don Quijote

I´m pleased to meet you too.

Michael

You can be sure I drove my father´s jaunting car with him in it safely home and left it there in perfect condition. But I don´t have a picture of it to show you and I want you to know what a jaunting car looks like, so here´s a grand picture of an Irish jaunting car I found on the Internet.

Just so you´ll know why I´m not around.

Hi. I´m still recovering from my Halloween Party. I have so much stuff to clean up and so many knots to untangle that I don´t know when I´ll be back in circulation. But at least I´ve survived.

Dirt and Worms / Tierra y Gusanos

Glorvina

Hi! Here I am in my kitchen. I don´t like to go to a party empty-handed, so I´m preparing a desert for Michael´s Halloween Party.

¡Hola!

It´s called "Dirt and Worms". And it´s very easy to prepare. You only have to combine a few ingredients. Here´s a copy of my recipe. Maybe you´ll have to enlarge the images to see them better.

Remember, the flowerpot has to be new, never used yet. You don´t want to eat real dirt, do you?

As you can see, the recipe is very easy. The bad news is that Alpin the Changeling is going to Michael´s party. So I have to prepare five hundred flowerpots!

One last thing. If you´re going to cook, remember to clean up the kitchen afterwards. And recycle all the leftovers.

Nut Brittle / Nuegados

Señora Estrella

Good evening, I´m Estrella, Don Alonso Quijano´s housekeeper. Don Alonso doesn´t like to go to a party emptyhanded so he´s asked me to whip up something quick for All Saints´Eve. The trouble is I have to make enough of it for 500 people. Don Alonso says there won´t be 500 people at the party. Most of the food will be eaten up by one little boy with an appetite that puts Camacho´s guests to shame.

Camacho

I! I´m Camacho. You can hardly see me because I´m in the middle of my wedding banquet. But it doesn´t matter if you don´t see me because what really matters about me is that I´m fabulously rich. Let me tell you about my wedding banquet. I´m so rich I´ve employed more than fifty cooks. The number of cheeses I´ve bought for the occasion could serve to build a brick wall big as the one in China. I have six huge pots, big as wine vats, choke full of different kinds of meat. I cut down more than a good sized forest to use as firewood to cook my provisions with. I -

Señora Estrella

Hold it right there, Camacho! If a certain little boy hears about your wedding banquet he might crash your party and I have a feeling even you, rich as you are, will end up poorer than your rival Basilio.

Camacho

Eh?

Señora Estrella

I don´t believe everything people tell me, and I certainly know Don Alonso sometimes says and does strange things, but...something´s happened that´s made me believe every word he said to me this time.

The other night I was out trying to pick asparagus by the light of the moon. I didn´t see any asparagus. What I saw was...an elf? I said to myself, tomorrow is another day and the one-eyed woman will see the asparagus and not an elf, and I returned home and went to bed.

But yesterday I was out in broad daylight and I saw...an elf. I returned home and there was Don Alonso waiting for me impatiently. He told me his English teacher was giving a party and he was invited and...

If there´s anyone who knows what she is seeing, it´s me, the one-eyed woman. When I see an elf, what I see is an elf. So if Don Alonso says he wants me to cook for five hundred, for five hundred people it shall be.

Now, it´s clear I need something quick and easy and that will appeal to a little boy. I know! I´ll make nuegados - nut brittle! My friend Pepe gave me a recipe from a cookbook published by his sister who is a teacher and her pupils from Daimiel. Here it is!

Nut Brittle

Ingredients:
2 kg. of nuts.
1/2 kg. of honey
1 spoonful of sugar

Utensils: Frying pan, wooden spoon, dish or tray

Preparation: Break the nuts in pieces and toast them a little. Boil the honey during half an hour together with the spoonful of sugar. Add the toasted nuts to the mixture of sugar and honey, stir a little and transfer mixture to a plate. When the mixture cools, cut in pieces and eat.

Time employed: One hour

Difficulty: Easy

Season: Since today there are nuts all year round, you can make nuegados whenever you please.

Comments: In the olden days, nuegados were made in the summer to be eaten on Sundays, since they had few ingredients. They could also be made only with sugar, without honey, but the result wasn´t as good.

Don Quijote

We´ve got to start working, Estrella. There´s a lot to be done.

I´ll help you in the kitchen. It´s not beneath me. Everyone should do a little housework. It´s good for one´s health and reminds one that one is human and that little things matter.

I´ll start by cracking the nuts.
