Why do the leaves fall towards the end of the year? Why do so many beautiful flowers have to die? The Ancient Greeks asked themselves these questions. And to answer them, they created one of their best known myths, the tale of Hades and Persephone.

¿Por qué caen las hojas hacia el final del año? ¿Por qué mueren tantas hermosas flores? Los antiguos griegos se hicieron estas preguntas. Y para contestarlas, crearon uno de sus mitos mas conocidos, el de Hades y Perséfone.



In May I told you about Demeter, the goddess of fertility, who made cereals grow so that people could eat. Well, Demeter had a lovely, young daughter named Persephone, who loved to play with her friends in the fields while her mother was at work.

En mayo os hablé de Démeter, la diosa de la fertilidad que hacía crecer los cereales para que la gente pudiese comer. Bien, pues, Démeter tenía una hija joven y preciosa llamada Perséfone a la que le encantaba jugar en los campos con sus amigas mientras su madre trabajaba.

One day, she was happily gathering blossoms her mother had grown especially for her to enjoy. She did not know it, but there was someone spying on her. It was the dark lord of the underworld, Hades.

Un día estaba felizmente recolectando flores que su madre había hecho crecer especialmente para que ella disfrutase de ellas. Perséfone no lo sabía, pero alguien la estaba espiando. Se trataba del señor oscuro del mundo subterráneo, Hades.

He was very powerful because he was the brother of Zeus, king of the gods. When Zeus dethroned his father Cronus, he and his brothers split the old god´s kingdom in three. Zeus became king of heaven, Poseidon - I´ll tell you about him another time - became lord of the sea and Hades went underground to be king of the underworld.

Era muy poderoso porque era hermano de Zeus, el rey de los dioses. Cuando Zeus destronó a su padre Crono, él y sus hermanos dividieron el reino del viejo dios en tres. Zeus se convirtió en el rey del cielo, Poseidón - os hablaré de él en otra ocasión - se quedó con el mar y Hades se fue bajo tierra para ser rey del mundo subterráneo.

It was not a bad deal for Hades because he became very rich, since all the gold and silver and diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and all precious metals and stones were now his. But it was depressing to live down there in the dark. And even more so because everything that died went there too. Even the souls of humans that died went to the underworld, where all they did was sob and cry and miss their friends and family and wish they were alive.

Hades no hizó un mal negocio porque se volvió muy rico, ya que todo el oro y la plata, los diamantes, rubíes, zafiros y esmeraldas, todos los metales y piedras preciosas ahora eran suyos. Pero era muy deprimente vivir bajo tierra en la oscuridad. Y lo era aún mas porque todo lo que se moría acababa bajo tierra también. Incluso las almas de los humanos que se morían iban al mundo subterráneo, donde lo único que hacían era sollozar y llorar y echar de menos a sus amigos y a su familia y desear seguir aún vivos.

Since one could hardly see a thing down there, nobody bothered to look good. Their hair was a mess, their nails grew long, they were all covered with dust and soil and everyone looked like something out of a horror film.

Puesto que nadie podía ver casi ni torta ahi abajo, nadie se molestaba en tener buen aspecto. Su pelo era un desastre, sus uñas crecían a tope y estaban todos cubiertos de polvo y tierra y todos parecían algo salido de una película de terror.

One day Hades decided to breathe some clean air and he rose to the surface of the earth. And when he saw the lovely Persephone with her white arms full of delicate flowers he just couldn´t resist. He decided to take her home with him, and that´s just what he did. He grabbed her and put her in his chariot drawn by fire-breathing black horses and sank down into his black realm.

Un día Hades decidió respirar un poco de aire puro y salió a la superficie de la tierra. Y cuando vió a la hermosa Perséfone con sus blancos brazos llenos de delicadas flores simplemente no se pudo resistir. Decidió llevarsela a casa con él y eso es exactamente lo que hizo. La agarró y la metió en su carro tirado por negros caballos que respiraban fuego y se hundió con ella en su oscuro reino.

Nobody dared to tell Demeter who had kidnapped her daughter. They were too scared of Hades. She wandered about the earth in a desperate search for her darling child and when she saw she couldn´t find her anywhere she went into such a decline that all the plants stopped growing and started to wilt and die. People began to die of hunger because there were no cereals and no fruits for them to eat.

Nadie se atrevía a decirle a Deméter quién había secuestrado a su hija. Le tenían demasiado miedo a Hades. Ella vagó por toda la tierra buscando desesperadamente a su queridísima hija, y cuando vió que no la podía encontrar en ninguna parte se derrumbó de tal modo que todas las plantas dejaron de crecer y comenzaron a marchitarse y a morir. La gente empezó a morirse de hambre porque no había cereales ni frutas que pudiesen comer.

The god of the sun, who sees everything that happens during the day, took pity on Demeter and the starving people. He did something very brave. He dared to tell Demeter where her daughter was. Demeter knew only Zeus could help her against Hades. So she went to see Zeus.

El dios del sol, que ve todo lo que ocurre de día, se apiadó de Démeter y de la gente hambrienta. Hizo algo muy valiente. Se atrevió a decirle a Démeter dónde estaba su hija. Démeter sabía que sólo Zeus podía ayudarla contra Hades. Así que se fue a ver a Zeus.

Zeus didn´t want to get into a fight with his brother but he had no choice because Demeter threatened to let all the vegetation die forever. He told Demeter that Persephone could return if she hadn´t eaten a single thing in the underworld. If she had eaten anything at all, she would have to stay there.

Zeus no quería meterse en una pelea con su hermano, pero no tenía elección porque Démeter amenazó con dejar que toda la vegetación se muriese para siempre. Zeus le dijo a Démeter que Perséfone podría volver si no hubiese comido ni una sola cosa en el mundo subterráneo. De haberse comido cualquier cosa, se tendría que quedar ahí.

Of course, Zeus knew that Persephone had eaten something. It wasn´t much. It was only four tiny little pomegranate seeds. But it was enough for Hades to refuse to let her go. Demeter, however, would not give in. Either her daughter returned or she wouldn´t lift a finger to make plants grow.

Zeus, por supuesto, sabía que Perséfone había comido algo. No era mucho. Se trataba sólo de cuatro minúsculas semillas de granada. Pero eran lo suficiente para que Hades se negase a dejarle ir. Démeter, sin embargo, no cedía. O su hija volvía con ella o ella no levantaría un dedo para hacer que creciesen las plantas.

Finally, they reached a compromise. Persephone would spend four months under the earth with Hades, one for each pomegranate seed that she had eaten. The other eight months she would be with her mother. So that´s why the seasons exist. Persephone has to spend the winter with Hades, who is now her husband, so when the summer ends her mother starts to get depressed and all the plants begin to die. But when the spring comes, Persephone returns to her mother who is so happy that she makes the most beautiful flowers bloom.

Finalmente llegaron a un compromiso. Perséfone pasaría cuatro meses bajo tierra con Hades, uno por cada semilla de granada que se había comido. Pasaría los otros ocho meses con su madre. Por eso existen las estaciones. Perséfone tiene que pasar el invierno con Hades, que es ahora su marido. Así que cuando el verano se acaba su madre se empieza a deprimir y todas las plantas comienzan a morir. Pero cuando llega la primavera, Perséfone vuelve con su madre que se pone tan contenta que hace que florezcan las más bellas flores.
