Jesus’ Bulldog / El buldog de Jesús

Carrie Nation, Hatchet Granny, described herself as Jesus’ bulldog. With the bible in one hand and a hatchet in the other, this not so little old lady who was almost six feet tall and feared nothing, made it her divine mission to destroy establishments that served alcohol.

Carrie Nation, La Abuelita del Hacha, se describía a sí misma como el buldog de Jesús. Con la biblia en una mano y un hacha en la otra, esta señora, que medía casi dos metros y no se asustaba de nada, se dedicaba a destrozar en nombre de Dios establecimientos en los que se servía alcohol.

Carrie was a teacher with a degree in History and interested in the influence of ancient Greek philosophers on local politics. She knew firsthand all about the harm alcohol caused in the society of her time. Her first husband was a physician who died from alcoholism. One night, already married to her second husband, Carrie prayed to the Lord, asking for a sign. She awoke hearing a voice say, “Go to Kiowa. I’ll stand by you. Take something in your hands and throw at these places in Kiowa and smash them.”

Carrie, una maestra especializada en la asignatura de Historia que se interesaba por la política y la influencia que los antiguos filósofos griegos tenían sobre la de su país, se había casado por primera vez con un médico que murió joven por ser alcohólico. Ella conocía de primera mano los estragos que el alcohol causaba en la sociedad de su época. Casada ya con su segundo marido, una noche Carrie se puso a rezar pidiéndole una señal a Dios. Despertó la mañana siguiente escuchando una voz que decía, “Ve a Kiowa. Yo te apoyaré. Lleva algo en las manos y lánzaselo a esos lugares que conoces en Kiowa y aplástalos.”

This encouraged Carrie to gather a pile of stones, go to Kiowa, Kansas, and cast the stones at the bottles in existence in three bars there.  When her husband joked that a hatchet would have een more effective, she procured one for herself and used it to destroy more saloons. Soon she became popular among teetotallers and members of the Temperance Movement, who gave her their support, helped pay her fines and gathered money for the cause selling stick pins shaped liked hatchets.

Esto animó a Carrie a coger un montón de piedras, irse a Kiowa, y apedrear allí las existencias de tres bares de esa ciudad de Kansas. Cuando su marido bromeó que sería más efectiva un hacha, Carrie se hizo con una y la empezó a utilizar para destrozar más bares. Pronto se volvió popular entre los grupos organizados de enemigos del alcohol y los miembros del Movimiento de la Templanza que la apoyaban, la ayudaban a pagar sus multas y a recaudar dinero para la causa abstemia vendiendo cosas como alfileres para corbatas con forma de hacha.

Carrie was arrested 32 times, led multitudinary parades against alcohol and even travelled to London for the cause. Her last words were “I have done what I could.” Those words are inscribed on her tombstone, “She hath done what she could.”

Carrie fue arrestada hasta 32 veces, lideró marchas multitudinarias contra el alcohol y hasta viajó a Londres para defender su causa. Carrie murió diciendo, “He hecho lo que he podido.” Esas palabras figuran en la lápida de su tumba, “Ella hizo lo que pudo.”
