What we in Spain call Fat Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday to the British. Churches ring their bells to call the faithful to confession, so they will be ready for Lent. This day is also known as Pancake Day. One can't eat eggs during Lent, so all eggs have to be eaten before Ash Wednesday so they won't spoil and be lost. So many pancakes are made on Tuesday that even pancake races are held. Yes, ladies put a scarf on their heads and an apron round their waists and run out in the streets with a frying pan in their hands, tossing pancakes in the air and trying to catch them again. It is said that this tradition started in 1445 when a woman who was preparing pancakes heard the church bells call for confession and she rushed off so as not to be late for it with her frying pan still in her hand. There are other traditions too. School children knock on the doors of their neighbours and gift them with little bouquets of flowers and a song in exchange of a little money that is later used to buy school supplies. Even today, there are still kids who go up to the manors and each receive a penny and a bun with fruits in it.
Martes Gordo o el Dia de las Tortitas
Lo que nosotros llamamos Martes de Carnaval o Martes Gordo, es Shrove Tuesday para los británicos. Las iglesias de allí hacen sonar sus campanas para que los fieles acudan a la iglesia para confesarse antes de que empiece la Cuaresma. Ese día también es conocido como el día de los panqueques, o las tortitas. La tradición manda comerse todos los huevos de los que uno dispone porque no se debe comer huevos durante la Cuaresma y hay que utilizarlos todos antes del Miércoles de Ceniza para que no se estropeen y pierdan. Se preparan tantas tortitas que hasta se celebran carreras de tortitas. Sí, las mujeres se ponen pañuelos en la cabeza y delantales en la cintura y salen corriendo por las calles portando sartenes con tortitas que van lanzando al aire y pillando otra vez con la sartén. Se dice que esta tradición la empezó en 1445 una señora que estaba preparando tortitas cuando escuchó sonar las campanas de su iglesia llamando a los fieles a confesión. Salió corriendo de casa con la sartén todavía en la mano para no llegar tarde a la iglesia. Hay otras tradiciones que también se siguen practicando ese día. Niños de escuela llaman a las puertas de los vecinos y regalan a estos unos ramilletes de flores y cantan una canción. Normalmente los vecinos les dan un poco de dinero que suelen usar para comprar material escolar. Todavía hoy, algunos niños visitan mansiones que fueron de los grandes terratenientes y reciben un penique y un bollo con frutas cada uno.
