Nicholas the Wonderworker / Nicolás el Obrador de Prodigios

December 6 is the feastday of St. Nicholas. Born in the third century A.D., he was bishop of Myra, which is in modern day Turkey. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving. He gave away anonymously the great fortune his parents left him. For instance, he would leave gold coins in people´s shoes while they were sleeping. When he died, people continued giving gifts anonymously in his name. That is why legend turned him into Santa Claus. He is the patron of children and merchants and of New York City. He is sometimes called St. Nicholas of Bari because his remains were transported to the cathedral of Bari. Last night he was busy giving out gifts in Germany.

El seis de diciembre es el día de San Nicolás. Nacido en el siglo III después de Cristo, fue obispo de Mira, que hoy forma parte de Turquía. Tenía fama de ser un gran amigo invisible. Repartió el extenso patrimonio que le dejaron sus padres de manera anónima. Por ejemplo, dejaba monedas en los zapatos de otros mientras dormían. Cuando murió, hubo gente que continuó dando regalos anónimamente en su nombre. Así es como su leyenda le convirtió en Santa Claus. Es el santo patrón de niños y mercaderes y también de la ciudad de Nueva York.

También se le llama San Nicolás de Bari porque sus reliquias fueron trasladadas a la catedral de Bari. Anoche estaba ocupado repartiendo regalos en Alemania.

I´m organizing an auction to raise funds for this library. To refurbish the guard´s cottage we live in. Pools, tennis courts, a stable for thoroughbred racehorses, etc. And I need money to pay myself a pension for my old age, one that will satisfy my needs, which from now on will be many. So, I´m going to auction the verbal tenses.

Voy a organizar una subasta para reunir fondos para esta biblioteca. Para restaurar y mejorar la casita del guarda en la que vivimos. Piscinas, pistas de tenis, establo para caballos de pura sangre ganadores de carreras, etc. Y necesito dinero para pagarme una pensión digna, acorde con mis necesidades, que a partir de ahora van a ser muchas. Así que voy a subastar los tiempos verbales.

This is how it works. Whoever buys a tense becomes the rightful owner of everything that is said, or sang or written in it. If you buy a book that is all in the present simple, you are the copyright holder of that book, no matter who held the right before the auction. We´ll start from zero. Of course if a book is written in different tenses, the owner of the said tenses will have to wheel and deal and pact.

Así es como funciona. El que se compre un tiempo verbal se convertirá en dueño y señor de todo lo que se diga, cante y escriba en ese tiempo. Si alguien compra un libro que esté totalmente en el presente simple, el dueño de ese libro tendrá el copyright de ese libro, sin que importe quién lo tuviera antes de la subasta. Empezaremos de cero. Claro que si un libro está escrito en varios tiempos verbales, los dueños de los mismos tendrán que hacer pactos millonarios.

Exactly. They are a res nullius. Or were, until I claimed them. The law is clear on that. If you find something that doesn´t belong to anyone, it´s yours. First come first served. So the verbal tenses are mine and I´m going to auction off a few because I need cash, but whatever I choose to sell, I will keep the past simple for myself because I heard somewhere it is used the most when telling stories. So don´t any of you open your mouths or you´ll be paying me for what you say.

Exactamente. Son un res nullius. Bueno, lo eran hasta que yo los reclamé. La ley está clara. Si encuentras algo que no es de nadie, es tuyo. Las cosas son del primero que las reclama. Así que los tiempos verbales son míos y voy a vender unos cuantos porque necesito dinero al contado. Pero venda lo que venda, me quedaré con el pasado simple porque dicen que es el más utilizado cuando se cuentan cuentos. When he returns from wherever it is he is at, he´ll find every single book he left here is right where it should be, which is on the shelves gathering dust for you to swat off them. Like the fat little Mata Hari I knocked unconscious and put in a cage.

Cuando vuelva de donde quiera que esté, encontrará todos y cada uno de los libros que dejó aquíexactamente donde deben estar, que es cogiendo polvo en las estanterias para que tú les sacudas. Hasta va a encontrar más libros de los que dejó. Libro alado que se acerque por aquí a espiar, libro al que derribaré con mi tirachinas. No, no I´m not! I´ll show you what book thieves are like. I caught two budding book thieves early this morning and I´ve put them in a cage right in the main hall of the library.

Nauta´s Mini Mythology - Melinoe / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Melinoe

How awful! I thought I would never be able to return to this blog. In October 2008 I told you all about Hades and Persephone. For October 2009, I thought I would invite their daughter to my Mini Mythology Post. You know, October, Halloween and all that. So I went off in search of Melinoe and after some searching I found her busy frightening people at night with her gang of ghosts. Melinoe, who is sometimes black and sometimes white and sometimes a bit of both is the one who makes dogs bark at things we can´t see, makes floors and doors creak when nobody seems to be anywhere about and bangs windows shut when there is no draft. Her hobby is scaring people.

¡Qué espanto! ¡Creí que nunca volvería a este blog! En octubre del 2008 os conté todo sobre Hades y Perséfone. Para octubre del 2009 quería traer a su hija Melinoe a mi Mini Mitología. Ya sabéis, por aquello de octubre y los difuntos. Así que partí en busca de Melinoe y después de buscarla un rato la encontré ocupada asustando a la gente por las noches con su pandilla de fantasmas. Melinoe, que es a veces negra y a veces blanca y a veces de ambos colores, es la que hace que los perros ladren a cosas que no podemos ver, que hace que las puertas y los suelos chirríen cuando no parece haber nadie allí y la que cierra ventanas de un golpe cuando no parece haber viento. Su hobby es asustar a la gente.

Melinoe listened to me politely while I told her what I wanted from her and then one of her ghost friends asked me if I could hold a candle a second for him. He said I was a ghost just like him and ought to do him this little favor. I did, thinking it would indeed be for a second, but Melinoe said that I now had to head her gang of ghosts in their roaming because whoever holds the candle has to do that. What happened next is I wasn´t able to get away from Melinoe and her friends until the ghost who gave me the candle returned from spending November haunting the Parthenon.

Melinoe me escuchó educadamente mientras le conté lo que quería de ella y entonces uno de sus amigos fantasmas me pidió que sostuviese un cirio un segundo. Me dijo que yo era un fantasma igual que él y que debía hacerle este favor por solidaridad. Cogí el cirio pensando que sería por un segundo pero Melinoe dijo que por haberlo cogido tenía que encabezar a su grupo mientras vagaban por ahí asustando a la gente porque quien porta el cirio debe hacer eso. Lo que ocurrió despues fue que no pude zafarme de Melinoe y sus amigos hasta que el fantasma que me había dado el cirio volvió después de pasar el mes de noviembre encantando el Partenón.

For a while there I thought I was doomed to wander about scaring people forever. If you are from Galicia you have probably heard of The Holy Company. My experience was almost as awful as meeting up with it. If you don´t know what the Holy Company is, you may want to read about it in the Wikipedia. But no more horrible, horrible, most horrible stories! I want to forget this experience and concentrate on Christmas now!

Llegué a pensar que estaba condenado a vagar asustando a gente por toda la eternidad. Si eres de Galicia probablemente habrás oído hablar de la Santa Compaña. Mi experiencia fue casi tan horrible como encontrarse con ella. Si no sabes lo que es la Santa Compaña, puedes leer sobre ella en la Wikipedia ¡Pero no más cuentos horribles, horribles y muy horribles! Quiero olvidarme de esta experiencia y concentrarme en la Navidad ahora!

I´m Mata Hari. I spied on both the French and the Germans during the First World War and got to face the firing squad. Watcha gonna do? People are bent on shooting spies. I´m being mentioned in a post this December.

Soy Mata Hari. Espié tanto a los franceses como a los alemanes durante la Primera Guerra Mundial y me mandaron al paredón. ¿Qué se le va a hacer? La gente está empeñada en fusilar a los espías. Me van a mencionar en una entrada este Diciembre.
