Mini Mythology: Marcus Curtius / Mini mitología: Marco Curcio

 Today I am going to tell you the short and simple story of a man who sacrificed himself for the welfare of Rome. First, you have to know what the Roman Forum was. The picture below should help you see that the forum was the civic centre of the city of Rome.There you could find the finest temples, the law courts, the senate, the most important monuments of this city. 

Hoy os voy a contar la historia sencilla y breve de un hombre que se sacrificó por  el bien de Roma. Primero deberíais saber lo que era el foro romano. La imagen de abajo os debería ayudar a ver que se trataba del centro cívico de la ciudad. Ahí se hallaban los templos más importantes, los juzgados, el senado y los monumentos más emblemáticos de la ciudad. 

But the forum had been built on what was once swampland. And one day, there was an earthquake and a hole appeared in the middle of the Roman forum. To make matters worse, the local augurs said that this hole was an entrance to the underworld, and that all sorts of dreadful things could come out of it and wreak havoc in the city. The only way to save the city from destruction was to offer Hades Pluto, the lord of the underworld, a sacrifice. Not just any sacrifice would do. This god demanded the best thing that could be found in Rome in exchange for his protection.

Pero el foro había sido construido sobre terreno pantanoso. Y un día hubo un terremoto y apareció un agujero en medio del foro romano. Para colmo, los augures locales dijeron que este agujero era un portal al inframundo y que toda clase de cosas espantosas podrian surgir de él y causar graves daños en la ciudad. La única manera de salvar a Roma de la destrucción suponía ofrecerle a Hades Plutón, señor del averno, un sacrifico. No iba valer cualquier sacrificio. Este dios exigiría lo mejor que se pudiese encontrar en Roma a cambio de su protección.   

Nobody seemed to know exactly what that was, but a young warrior named Marcus Curtius had no doubt about it. He believed the best thing Rome had was the men who were willing to die to defend their city. So he dressed in his best clothes, put on his finest armour, decked his magnificent horse for the occasion, and carrying his splendid weapons, rode to the hole and jumped directly into it. The hole closed over him and his horse, and the gateway to hell was thus shut. 

Nadie parecía saber que exactamente era lo mejor que había en Roma, pero un joven guerrero llamado Marco Curcio no tenía duda alguna. Él pensaba que lo mejor que tenía Roma eran los hombres que estaban dispuestos a morir para defender su ciudad. Así que se puso sus mejores galas, su armadura buena, vistió a su estupendo caballo para la ocasión y llevando con él sus armas cabalgó hasta el agujero y se lanzó a él. El agujero se tragó a Curcio y a su caballo y se cerró, con lo que quedó sellada la puerta al inframundo.
