Leo the Lion / Leo el León

Hello! It´s the last week of July and I´m Leo the Lion, here as the new sign of the zodiac. My story is similar to Cancer the Crab´s.

¡Hola! Es la última semana de julio y soy Leo el León y estoy aquí por ser el nuevo signo del zodiaco. Mi historia se parece bastante a la de Cáncer el Cangrejo.

I wasn´t an earthling. My mother was the lunar goddess Selene (mini mythology X). I was born in the moon where I lived quite happily...and peacefully. There is no record of my ever having attacked anyone up there.

Yo no era un terrícola. Mi madre era la diosa lunar Selene (mini mitología X). Nací en la luna, donde vivía feliz...y pacíficamente. No hay noticias de que yo haya atacado a nadie ahí arriba.

But one day the queen of the gods, Hera, (mini mythology VIII) brought me down to earth with the sinister purpose of having me draw out her stepson Herakles, whom she hated.

Pero un día la reina de los dioses, Hera (mini mitología VIII) me bajó a la tierra con el siniestro propósito de que me enfrentase a su hijastro, Heracles, al que odiaba.

Yes, that Herakles or Hercules, the superhumanly strong fellow who also killed the Hydra of Lake Lerna and squashed Cancer the Crab while he was about it.

Sí, ese Heracles o Hércules, el individuo dotado con una fuerza sobrehumana que también se cargó a la Hidra del lago de Lerna y aplastó a Cáncer, el Cangrejo, mientras estaba en ello.

Since Herakles was a hero and went about slaying monsters and beasts, Hera hoped I would have to eat him up to defend my life.

Como Heracles era un héroe que iba por ahí matando a bestias y mónstruos, Hera esperaba que yo me lo tuviese que comer para defender mi vida.

I wandered for a while about a place called Nemea for a while, where I had trouble with the natives, who were horribly hostile, before Herakles was told I was there and came after me. This is why I am sometimes called the Nemean Lion. But, I insist, I´m not Nemean. I´m a Lunatic.

Vagué durante un tiempo por un lugar llamado Nemea, donde me las tuve que ver con los nativos, que eran horriblemente hostiles, antes de que apareciese Heracles y viniese a por mí. Pero insisto en que no soy nemeano. Soy lunático.

He couldn´t hurt me with his bow because the arrows he shot at me only bounced off my hide.

The same thing happened when he tried to bash me to death with his club.

No podía hacerme daño con su arco porque las flechas que disparaba rebotaban al tocar mi piel. Lo mismo ocurrió cuando intentó aniquilarme a golpes con su mazo.

So what he did was strangle me. All I got to do to him before he ended my life was tear off one of his little fingers. So I suppose I wasn´t as tough as everyone wanted to think I was. I just had great fur.

Así que lo que hizo fue estrangularme. Lo único que yo le hice a él antes de que me matase fue arrancarle un dedo meñique, así que no creo que yo fuese tan terrible como todos querían que fuese. Sólo tenía una piel extraordinaria.

Herakles realized this, and not content with murdering me, he skinned me and made himself a protective cloak out of my hide. That way arrows bounced off him too.

Heracles se dio cuenta de esto y no se conformó con asesinarme, sino que también me despellejó y se fabricó una especie de capa protectora con mi piel. De esa manera las flechas que le disparaban también rebotaban en lugar de hacerle daño.

As was to be expected, my mother, the moon goddess, made a big fuss about all this business and Hera felt obliged to find me a place among the stars. So that´s why I have my own constellation. I also got my fur back. But I still have a trauma and low self-esteem.

Como era de esperar, mi madre, la diosa de la luna, montó un cirio ante estos hechos y Hera se sintió obligada a encontrarme un lugar entre las estrellas. Y así es como llegué a tener mi propia constelación. También me devolvieron la piel. Pero todavía tengo un trauma, y baja autoestima.

There are many bright stars in my constellation. One of the brightest is Regulus, the lion´s heart. Together with others it forms the shape of a sickle that represents my head and mane.

Denebola is another of my stars and it means “lion´s tail.”

Denebola es otra de mis estrellas y significa “cola de león.”

When I am prominent in the sky, which is in the summer, the river Nile is brimming and the lions that lived by it used to fight the heat by gathering near its waters.

En la época en la que destaco en el cielo, que es el verano, él río Nilo está rebosante y los leones de por ahí combatían el calor reuniéndose junto a sus aguas.

They also call me the star of Bacchus because this wine god is said to be my father and because I´m around watching how the grapes grow for the harvest coming in September.

También me llaman la estrella de Baco (ver mini mitología XI) porque se dice que este dios del vino es mi padre y porque estoy muy presente vigilando como crecen las uvas para la cosecha que será en septiembre.

I searched for my Bulfinch´s Mythology book in my treehouse. It wasn´t there. This is what it looked like before it grew light blue wings and took to flying from one place to another.

Busqué mi libro de La Mitología de Bulfinch en mi casa árbol. No estaba allí. Éste es el aspecto que tenía antes de que le saliesen alas de un azul celeste y empezase a volar por todas partes.

If any of you know where it is, I´d appreciate your telling me.

It´s Today / Es hoy

So, today is Mr. Bulfinch´s birthday and the best tribute I can render is to show everybody what a terrible state my original copy of "Bulfinch´s Mythology" is in. But I can´t find it anywhere because it´s got wings and is always flying from one place to another. So I can´t scan and publish that here right now. Maybe it´s in my treehouse. I´ll check this afternoon.

Así que hoy es el cumpleaños del Sr. Bulfinch y el mejor tributo que puedo rendirle es mostrar a todos el mal estado en el que está mi copia original de su obra "La Mitología de Bulfinch." Pero no la puedo encontrar en ninguna parte porque tiene alas y siempre vuela de un sitio a otro. Así que no puedo escanear y publicar ahora mismo. Puede que esté en mi casa árbol. Voy a buscarla allí esta tarde.
