Nauta´s Mini Mythology -Hera, Zeus, Cronus, etc. / Mini Mitología de Nauta - Hera, Zeus, Crono, etc.

Nauta

It´s June, so I am going to tell you about the queen of the gods, about her husband and his father and ten noisy soldiers and a nurse and her goats. And a fellow named Argos.

Hera is the queen of the Greek gods. We Romans call her Juno, and that is where the name of the month of June comes from. In this picture, she is with her servant Argos, whose body was all covered with eyes.

Cows are Hera´s favorite animal, because they have big beautiful eyes like she does. But she also likes peacocks, like the one in the picture above. Peacocks came to Greece from Persia. They were consecrated to Hera because the spots on their tail looked like the eyes of Argos.

Hera´s husband is Zeus, also called Jove or Jupiter in Rome. He isn´t a good husband. He isn´t faithful and cheats on her often. Zeus thinks that because he is the god of lightning he can bully everybody. He is king of the gods because everybody is scared of him and his lightning bolts.
Why is Zeus such a tyrant? Maybe because he was traumatized during his childhood. His father
was Cronus, also called Saturn, who ruled during the Golden Age, when people were good. Do you remember the Ages of Man? I told you about them in my Mini Mythology II, on the 28th of January.

Cronus was a sad, melancholic god, who would often sit alone in the deep of the woods and brood because he had a problem he didn´t know how to solve. He knew that one of his children would overthrow him. He didn´t want this to happen, so he decide to swallow his children the minute they were born. His wife, Rhea, didn´t like this solution at all. When she gave birth to Zeus, she decided to hide him from her husband. She gave him to the Kuretes, nine soldier-priests who hung his cradle from an oak tree.

So that Cronus wouldn´t hear him cry, they took turns and spent the whole day and night pretending to fight, shouting and making terrible noise clashing their swords and shields. Now, wouldn´t that drive anyone crazy?

The lady in the picture above is Amalthea. She was Zeus´ nurse and fed him with the milk of her pet goats. She had a cornucopia, a horn of plenty, that was the source of inexhaustible riches. All sorts of good things came out of that horn. Zeus put the constellation Capra in the sky to honour Amalthea and her goats.

Mini Quiz
Answer True or False:
____1. Hera likes peacocks because they have eyes all over their bodies.
____2. Hera´s eyes are big and beautiful.
____3. Hera´s husband is a very kind and considerate fellow.
____4. Zeus is king of the gods because he frightens everybody with his lightning bolts.
____5. Cronos and Rhea are the parents of Zeus.
____6. The Kuretes made noise to frighten Zeus.
____7. Amalthea was Zeus´nanny.

8. What are the amoretti carrying? Yes, those little winged kids are called Amoretti.

Prize questions:
9. What is the singular of amoretti and of spaghetti? Why?
10. What is the name of the horrible painting below and who painted it?

I don´t think that's the way it happened, because when Zeus defeated him, Cronus threw up all his children out again and they were in perfect shape. Well, maybe a little traumatized also.

Ballad of St. Anthony and the Birdies /Canción de San Antonio y los Pajarcitos

Hi. Today is Saint Anthony´s day. Many people celebrate it all over the world, but there is a little hermitage in Madrid that is very special, where a fair called a "verbena" is held every year to honor the saint.

This hermitage has another building exactly like it standing next to it. It was built as a substitute for the first, which became only a museum because the smoke from the candles burnt there during services was blackening the paintings on the ceiling.

These paintings are very special because they are by Goya, one of Spain´s great painters. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was from Aragon, but he was for many years a painter at the court of Madrid. He was asked to decorate St. Anthony´s Hermitage and he did so.

The most famous part of Goya´s work here is on the dome, where he painted one of St. Anthony´s most famous miracles. St. Anthony´s father was unjustly accused of a murder. The saint defended his father by making the dead man resurrect and testify before the judge and thus Anthony´s father was acquitted.

This hermitage is very small, but people stand for a long time in queues on this day to be able to have a loaf of bread they have bought there blessed, or to ask the saint to find them a good husband or wife if they want to marry. They sometimes find the partner they are looking for that same night dancing at a fair held outside the chapel.

The hermitage is next to a little river, so small that some people say it is an apprentice river. It is the only one in the city of Madrid and is called the Manzanares, which means "appletrees." People sometimes picnic on the banks of the river, but there aren´t any appletrees to give them shade. There are other kinds of trees such as weeping willows.

At the fair, people can buy many things, including little printed sheets with a whimsical song about a miracle St. Anthony is said to have performed when he was a little boy. Nobody knows who wrote this song, but it was probably one of the many blind men who used to earn a living singing songs in public places mostly about legends or popular events.

Sensitive and intelligent kids - if you are reading this you are sure to be both - find this song so curious and entrancing that I´ve published Favonia´s translation here for you to read ...or to sing. I´m trying to make it possible for you to hear it too, though in Spanish - that´s the best part, it´s nice to listen to. Joaquín Díaz sings it specially well- but that may take a while. I haven´t found it on the Internet. I might have to take a CD to class.Hey, it´s 2014 and I´ve found a way to listen to it right here and now. Keep reading.

The Ballad of St. Anthony and the Birdies
Divine, glorious Anthony,
If it´s not too much a bother,
By His Grace Most Sanctifying,
Ask of our Eternal Father
My tongue to enlighten
That I might relate
The miracle you worked
At the age of eight.

His father was a Christian
- Would they were like him now! -
Who kept his family fed
By the sweat of his brow.
In a little orchard
He himself did labor
Harvesting each season
Whatever he was able.

On the morning of a Sunday,
Just before he left for Mass,
Duty that with him a habit
Of very longstanding was,
"Anthony, my darling,"
He said to his son,
"Will you do me a favor?
I must ask you for one."

"While I am away at Mass,
Son, I would that you were careful
None of the birds of the fields
Spoiled the fruit of our efforts.
They come into the orchard,
Eat what we have sown,
Peck at all the fruit
Before it is grown."

The father left for Mass,
Where he prays with great devotion.
Anthony, back in the orchard,
Rapidly goes into motion.
"Listen, little birds,
Come down from those trees
for my father says
Your banditry must cease."

Over the wide countryside,
Not a bird was to be found.
For when St. Anthony called them,
All to the last one came round.
Anthony is singing
Medleys full of glee
Which the birds all chorus
Chirping cheerfully.

Hark! The father now returns!
Anthony says they must hush
And goes to welcome his father,
Who of his son now does ask,
"Tell me, my dear son,
Anthony, my own,
Did you do as I asked
Before I left home?"

"Father, there´s no need to worry,
For the birds have caused no harm.
To keep them from making mischief,
I´ve locked them up in the barn."
The father when he saw
What he had just heard,
To his lord the Bishop
Sent immediate word.

The Lord Bishop came in answer
With a great and worthy train.
Having all witnessed the marvel
They tried to explain it in vain.
They opened wide the windows,
Flung the doors apart,
Still the little birds
Could not be made to part.

Anthony then said, "There is,
Sirs, no cause for alarm.
Until I tell them to do so,
They won´t abandon the barn."
He stood by the doorway
And he spoke like this,
"Come out, little birds,
You may leave, if you please.

"Come out, you storks, in order!
Eagles, turtledoves and herons!
Hawks, cranes, owls and finches!
Sparrows and bustards and pigeons!
No filching, you magpies!
Step it up, you quails!
Partridges and peacocks,
No one´s treading on your tails!"

When they were out to the last bird,
They arraigned in strict formation,
Waiting for Anthony´s orders,
Which would have all their attention.
"Don´t go into orchards!
"Don´t touch farmers´crops!
"Feed in the rich prairies,
Fields and mountaintops!"

When they heard that they could fly,
They did so in sweet celebration,
Trilling goodbye to their patron
And to the whole congregation.
Monseñor the Bishop,
Once his tongue untied,
Had the portent published,
Both far and wide.

Tree of grandeur! Fount of Love!
Ark of all the virtues!
Mirror of God most exalted!
Canon for all of the faithful!
Anthony divine,
By thy intercession,
May we all rejoice
In eternal salvation!

The video below will allow you to hear this ballad in the original Spanish.

This is Joaquín Díaz, who sings this ballad and many other songs beautifully. Below are some of his CDs or records.

Cheating /Chuletas

Sancho

I wouldn´t be true blue Spanish if I didn´t cheat during exams. So, I´m going to make myself a "chuleta." I wonder how you say that in English.

Of course, I know "chuleta" means "steak". But I´m not going to make myself dinner. I´m going to cut a wee bit of paper and write something on it that I can copy during my final English test.

I can´t ask Michael what the name for this kind of paper is in English. He´s sure to suspect I´m going to cheat.

First, paper and scissors.

Primero papel y tijeras.

There. That ought to be tiny enough.

Ahí. Ya debe ser lo suficientemente pequeña.

Now, pen.

Ahora, bolígrafo.

Now...What do I write on it?

Ahora...¿qué escribo en ella?

Come to think of it, there´s nothing I don´t know. I´ve studied everything I had to. I know all the irregular verbs. I can form the perfect tenses easily. I don´t need this thing. But...how can I go to a test without a "chuleta"? It wouldn´t feel right!

He estudiado todo.

Don Quijote

If Michael catches you with that, he´ll mark your test with a zero. Be honest and throw it in the recycling bin.

Sancho

I´m not interested in the grade I get. I´m happy with what I´ve learned. That´s what´s really important! Even if I get a zero.

No me interesa la nota que saque. Estoy conforme con lo que he aprendido. Eso es lo realmente importante. Aunque saque un cero.

Don Quijote

Recycle the "chuleta" then. Not everyone Spanish cheats. I never have.

Entonces recicla la chuleta. No todos los españoles se copian. Yo nunca lo he hecho.

Alpin

The name for "chuleta" is cheat sheet. You can also say "crib" or "trot."

"Chuleta" se dice "cheat sheet." También puedes decir "crib" o "trot."

May apologizes and June busts him out.

Hi! I´m May. Sorry. I forgot to come and say goodbye on the 31st. But then, everybody knows I´m an irresponsible month. I was too busy having fun.

¡Hola! Soy Mayo. Estaba demasiado ocupado divirtiendome.

Well, I´m June. And it´s my month. So leave! It´s my turn now. I´m famous for busting out all over and if you don´t leave peacefully I´m busting you out of my space!

Pues yo soy Junio.

Titania

Darcy, do you think Oberon is senile?

¿Darcy, tu crees que Oberón está senil?

Darcy

Senile?

¿Senil?

Titania

Or has one of those diseases of the memory humans have?

Darcy

Erh...no.

Eh...no.

Titania

Why not? I was watching him at the May Eve party and he seemed to be trying to remember something that escaped him. And there was something strange about his eyes.

Darcy

Erh...no. I didn´t notice anything strange. No. There was nothing strange.

Eh...no. Yo no he notado nada raro. No. No había nada raro.

Titania

Well, I did. And I suspect he´s been up to something while I was enjoying my beauty sleep all of last April.

Darcy

Your beauty sleep?

¿Tu sueño de belleza?

Titania

Every goddess and fairy queen knows there is nothing better than sleep to make you look beautiful. We all have a little box full of our beauty secret. That is, full of sleep. When we open it and it comes out, we fall asleep. Sometimes for a couple of hours. Sometimes for a day or a week. Other times for a month or a year. Some of us have even slept during centuries, like the Sleeping Beauty, who slept for a hundred years and was radiant when she woke. Or like Persephone, the goddess of the underworld, who sleeps for six months is awake only during the other six of a year.

Darcy

So that´s why you sleep so much. I thought you might have narcolepsia.

Titania

That´s why I look so good. No dark circles under the eyes. It used to be easy to be queen. All you had to do was be the most beautiful. That was it. You were the most beautiful, so you were queen. Everyone accepted that. But today, things are getting a little more complicated. Ever since Oberon hired that Manga Blinking person.

Darcy

His name is Mungo Binky.

Se llama Mungo Binky.

Titania

Yes. I don´t know exactly what that fellow is doing. That´s why I haven´t stopped him.

Darcy

All he is doing for the moment is giving himself and others headaches.

Titania

As long as he doesn´t give me one. Well, in any case, now, more than ever, I have to keep an eye on Oberon.

Darcy

What do you care what Oberon does?

Titania

Well, he´s my husband, isn´t he? And he´s the only opposition I´ve got. I´ve got to watch him so I can stop him if I don´t like what he´s doing and so I can steal the credit for what he´s done if I do like it. That´s what an opposition is for.

Darcy

If you say.

Si tu lo dices.

Titania

So, do you really think he isn´t up to anything?

Bueno. ¿Realmente crees que no está maquinando algo?

Darcy

Not just now.

Ahora mismo no.

Titania

Then can I go to sleep for a while so I will look good on St. John´s Eve?

Darcy

I´ll watch over your sleep.

Yo velaré tu sueño.

Titania

You´re so sweet, Darcy. I´m going to open the box. You get out of the way. I don´t want the contents of this box to knock you out too.

Eres tan dulce, Darcy.

Kevin

Psstt! Darcy, is she asleep?

¡Psstt! Darcy, ¿está dormida?

Darcy

Yes, she is. Hush! Speak softly. Why are you here?

Sí, lo está. ¡Calla! Habla bajito. ¿Por qué estás aquí?

Kevin

I have a little something for you.

Tengo una cosita para tí.

Darcy

For me?

¿Para mí?

Kevin

From Oberon.

De parte de Oberón.

Darcy

I asked him to leave me be.

Le pedí que me dejase en paz.

Kevin

It´s a gift. It´s James Bond´s car. There is no way he can remember why he bought it, but he believes it was for you. So he asked me to give it to you.

Darcy

I don´t want it. Take it back to him.

No lo quiero. Devuelveselo.

Kevin

I can´t. He says the infernal gadget takes up too much space and is always getting in his way. Puck refuses to drive it, the magic horses are upset when they see it, and he wants to get rid of it once and for all.

No puedo.

Darcy

Well, I don´t want it either. Do me a favor. I can´t do this myself because I have to watch over Titania. Throw it away somewhere. But not anywhere. Glorvina will probably scream at me if she sees it littering the environment.

Kevin

Darcy, if you don´t want it, can I have it?

Darcy, si tu no lo quieres, ¿puedo quedarmelo yo?

Darcy

It´s all yours.

Es todo tuyo.

Kevin

Thank you so much. I owe you one.

Muchismas gracias. Te debo una.

Darcy

You don´t owe me a thing. Just take it with you when you go.

No me debes nada. Sólo llevatelo cuando te vayas.

Kevin

Darcy is right. I don´t owe anyone a thing. I deserve this car because I worked hard to get it. I manipulated everyone to get it. I made Oberon want to hire Darcy. And I got Puck all worked up about the way Oberon treated him. And I suggested to Oberon he should buy James Bond´s car. And I´ve been putting it in his way every minute since he did.

Darcy tiene razón. No debo nada a nadie.

Now, why would I want to do all this? Because it´s almost June, that´s why. Every June I go on vacation and visit the human world. There, I drive all the mortals I meet as crazy as I can. Can you imagine how many girls will go mad over my new human car? Aren´t I wicked and clever? To take life seriously, is serious folly! You´ve got to laugh, yes, you´ve got to sing!

Michael

To think we´re in the hands of people like Kevin!

We need a picture of Kevin living it up with all his girlfriends in James Bond´s car. Will you do one for us?
