I don't always know when I can write "to" after a verb.

No siempre sé cuando puedo escribir "to" detrás de un verbo.

1. Jamás: pongas “to” detrás de would, should, could, can, must, may, might, will, shall.

2. Siempre: ought to y be able to.

I ought to go. Debería irme.

I was able to escape. Pude escaparme.

3. Have:

have + sustantivo = I have an apple. Tengo una manzana.

have + to + verbo = I have to go. Tengo que irme.

Nunca pongas un gerundio de esos de –ing detrás de have.

4.Want:

Sustantivos: I want water. Quiero agua.

To + infinitivo: I want to eat. Quiero comer.

Nunca pongas want con gerundio de los de –ing.

5. Like, dislike, love, hate: pueden ir con las tres cosas:

Sustantivos: I like oranges. Me gustan las naranjas.

To + infinitivo: I love to sing. Me encanta cantar.

Gerundio de -ing: I hate waiting. Odio esperar.

6. Don’t mind:

Sustantivos: I don’t mind insects. No me molestan los insectos.

To + infinitivo: jamás. Eso es, ¡nunca jamás!

Gerundio de -ing: I don’t mind waiting. No me importa esperar.

Having + to + infinitivo: I don’t mind having to wait. No me importa tener que esperar.

7. Need:

Sustantivos: I need money.  Necesito dinero.

To + infinitivo: I need to sleep.  Necesito dormir.

Gerundio de -ing; jamás.

8. Listen:

Una cosa es listen (escuchar) y otra es listen to (escuchar a).

She doesn't listen. Ella no escucha.

She doesn't listen to anybody. Ella no escucha a nadie.

Recuerda que en inglés cualquier cosa que se escucha se "escucha a" si se dice lo que se escucha.

Sí: Listen to music. Escuchar música.
No: Listen music. ¡Jamás!
Sí: Listen to me. Escúchame a mí.
No: Listen me. ¡Jamás!
