Children's Day / Día del Niño

We know what we want this world to be like.

Sabemos cómo queremos que sea este mundo.

In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie next to the baby goat, the calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all.

Pons,Fons and November Blackberries / Pons, Fons y zarzamoras de noviembre

The fauns Pons Greenthorn and Fons Redthorn are sitting in a blackberry bush chatting amicably in Minced Forest about Michael Toora’s  peculiar Halloween party.

Pons Greenthorn / Pons Espinaverde

And don´t ask me how I got on the stilts because I have no notion how I did. And finally there was no significant brawl because Michael´s creative brother Finbar hooked huge barrels of whisky to most of the affluents of the dark chocolate river and more barrels of Williams’ Pear Brandy to all but one of the tributaries of the milk chocolate river. That one was for the kids. Galo managed to  camouflage the barrels as dunes, so tutti contenti.

 Fons Redthorn / Fons Espinaroja

And the food? Is it true they only served hardboiled eggs?

¿Y la comida? ¿Es verdad que sólo sirvieron huevos duros?

Pons

Serve, what one would say serve… Well, there were some eggs trapped in tables that looked like small sofas that looked like lips, but the people heard about this in time to bring food of their own to the party. There would have been enough to fill a horn of plenty, save that this annoying kid who should have been a changeling showed up and began to devour all there was. The guests took to hiding in the craters to eat their viands unmolested, for that kid is shameless and even tore a chocolate cookie from the hands of a little girl who is like two years old. Titania’s youngest. You should have seen the blow her French nanny belted him.

Alpin

Even so, I ate the cookie. I am that annoying kid you are gossiping about. Now get off that blackberry bush you are leaning on because I need its fruits. I don´t see why you don´t get pricked by the thorns. You must be really thick-skinned.

Pons

What do you want the blackberries for?

¿Para qué quieres las moras?

Alpin

There was a blackberry tart at the party which should have been mine, but one of the stupid girls that baked it made it her business to see I got no more than a ridiculously tiny serving. How can one be so cheap? I´m still hankering for blackberry tart and I´m going to pick some berries so my mum can make me one twice as big and twice as good just for me.

Fons

Listen, haven´t you been told that blackberries are not to be picked in November? Yes? And you mean to pick them anyway? But do you know why no one does? The Púca spits and pees on them. Do you want to eat that? You'll be sick for sure.

Vas a enfermar seguro.

Alpin

Old wives’ tales.

Cuentos de viejas.

Pons

None of that. We are witnesses. We´ve seen him do it year after year. We´ve seen him do it this year, right here, on this bush. In a fit of rage.

De eso nada. Somos testigos.

`
Alpin

You lie. If you´d seen him do that, you would not be leaning on the bush, piggies. And the Púca would never pollute the fruits and berries he would like to reserve for the forest creatures.

Mientes.

 Fons

Dork, it doesn´t affect forest creatures. We´re immune. Like vaccinated. But it does humans and outsider fairies. The saliva and the urine of the Púca are more toxic than any insecticide. But go right ahead, buddy. See for yourself. Try this plump, shiny and befouled blackberry right here and see if something happens to you or not.

Alpin

¡Puuuuuuke! It tastes awful! I´m going to try another to see what this is about. And a couple more. Disgusting. You might be right. But they will wash them for me at home.

¡Puaaaak! Está malísima. Voy a probar otra a ver de qué va esto. Y un par más. Asquerosas. Puede que tengáis razón. Pero ya me las lavarán en casa.

When Alpin tried the first polluted blackberry, slowly, but not so slowly, hair began to grow out of his nose. And from his ears.

When he tried the second, his eyes began to flash.

After the third, his hair began to float and tangle.

And at the fourth, a cloud of locusts appeared out of nowhere and traced three circles round his head before sitting on it.

There was no need for him to take yet another before he was assaulted by a fever and dizzied by a spell. He did not fall to the ground, struck dead, but he lost his sense of direction and began to meander meaninglessly about the forest barefooted, giving little hops and skips as if he were dancing a ceremonial dance. Spots also broke out on his T-shirt.

With him wandered through the woods a winding whisper: “Beware! Beware of him, beware! For he on foul food hath fed and drank the milk of murkiness!”

Pons

We had better follow him. So we can tell his people what has become of this twerp.

Fons

Fine, but from a distance.

Sí, pero de lejos.

Why Wednesday? / ¿Por qué Miércoles?

Have you ever wondered why Wednesday Addams is named Wednesday?

Well, it is because of an old rhyme that aims to determine our fate according to the day of the week on which we were born.

Saturday´s child must work hard for a living, / El que nace en sábado trabajará para sobrevivir,
But the child that is born on the Sabbath day, / Pero el que nace en el día del Señor,
Is bonny and wise and good and gay.  / Es hermoso y sabio y bueno y alegre.

You have probably noticed the author favors those born on Sunday, probably for religious reasons. But what has he or she got against those born on Wednesday?

Michael had foresight and hired people to do for him what he couldn’t do for himself. But it doesn´t look as if his Halloween party will be a bed of roses this year either. His exterior decorator has just turned his lovely autumn garden into a surrealistic scenario.

 Michael

I would like to congratulate you on doing a wonderful job, but I  can´t see very well, so you will have to tell me what you´ve done with my garden. It´s beautiful and very spacious, but it´s not a very spooky garden, so I imagine you’ve had to work a lot to give it the right atmosphere for a Halloween party. There are loads of rose trees and bushes and they´re still flowering, so I imagine it must have taken you a while to paint all the roses and the mums black. I hope the paint you´ve employed hasn´t caused the vegetation any harm.

 Cucuphas Galo / Cugat Galo

Flowers in widow's weeds? No way!

¿Flores que llevan luto? ¡Ni hablar!

Michael

Ah. I understand. That´s why all I see is grey. You painted them grey because that's the in color now, or so I've heard. I believe they are painting even babies’ rooms grey.

Ah. Entiendo.

Cucuphas Galo / Cugat Galo

Grey, yes. Roses, no. A tree with a wig at the entrance is all the vegetation we need. No leaves either, fallen, falling or holding fast. I´ve turned all this into a lunar scenario, but with a certain touch that will make one feel there has been a terrible cataclysm.

Michael

What?

¿Qué?

Cucuphas Galo/ Cugat Galo

It's Halloween, isn't it? People need to feel disturbed and unquiet.

Es Halloween, ¿no? Hay que sentir desazón, inquietud.

Michael

That is how I feel right now.

Cucuphas Galo / Cugat Galo

You see? It works.

¿Lo ves? Funciona.

Michael

Tell me you haven´t destroyed the trees or the plants in my garden.

Cucuphas Galo / Cugat Galo

Oh, heck! I thought you would say that. So I have hidden them under hills with craters and deserts of silver dust. You needn´t worry about the local fauna either. I have told the spiders that live in this garden they won´t be welcome here tonight. I told them to go spend it at some other party. I am going to fill this place with ants any minute now and I don´t want quarrels.

Michael

But the spiders are among my most decorative guests, along with the black cats and -

Cucuphas Galo / Cugat Galo

Not one! Not one black cat do I want here! Black telephones have taken their place. Unhung, they sound more nerve-wracking  than a meowing cat. And they will give us a retro touch. Nor do I want pumpkins. They are so obvious. Instead, I have decorated this place with clocks that will destroy themselves when they strike twelve. We don’t need pumpkins. What I have certainly brought over is a couple of elephants. I never decorate anything without including elephants. I still don’t know very well how they will fit into this scheme, but as they are grey, at worst they will blend into the surroundings.

Michael

I don't know if my guests will understand all this...

Cucuphas Galo / Cugat Galo

Which reminds me that the guests who come wearing masks must leave them at the entrance along with their hypocrisy. We will hang them from the tree with the platinum wig, which will double as a coat-hanger. Those of your guests who have special abilities may be able to leave their own faces hanging from the tree too. And also at the entrance we will give everyone a pair of very tall stilts to walk on during the feast, so they will feel they are above everything, which should work wonders for their self-esteem and make them all the life of the party. I have also taken the liberty to call the caterer and order him to serve nothing but hard-boiled eggs. We will offer them encased in those tables over there shaped like half-open red lips with vampire fangs. We will play at drawing them out of the tables with our mouths instead of bobbing for apples. Whoever fails to trap an egg gets nothing to eat. Such is the fight for survival. But there will be drinks for everybody to drown in, overflowing, running rivers of hot chocolate lava, dark and with milk. We will use gigantic straws to drink so as not to have to get off our stilts. Èsta bé? Is that ok with you? Of course it is. There is no arguing with genius.

Michael

Let me see how I can tell you this so you will understand the problem I have without feeling offended and without losing my smile, which, incidentally, has frozen on my lips. Organizar aquesta festa és una moguda. Organizing this party is a headache. It´s not that I mind being the riota – the laughing stock – of my guests. If it were only that!  My guests…my father, for example... El meu pare és molt carca. My father is very traditional. He will think you are com un llum. Nuts. I went to one of those gatherings he has with his friends and they broke my glasses and it was only a Sunday luncheon. Now I´ve been almost sightless for over a month. I don´t even dare to think what will happen if they only get hot chocolate to drink. I´m scared shitless! Estic cagat!

¡Estoy aterrado! Estic cagat!
