It was five o´clock in the afternoon of the 31st of August and Arley was standing at the door to the devil´s school in Salamanca waiting for it to be September Eve. There was a little detail that had him worried
because he hadn’t thought of it before. He believed the gate opened only for
groups of seven and he was only one. How was he to get in that night?
Eran las cinco de la tarde del 31 de agosto y Arley estaba como un clavo en la puerta de la
escuela del demonio en Salamanca esperando que fuesen las doce menos cinco minutos de la vispera de septiembre. Pero le preocupaba un detalle en el que no había caído
antes. Tenía entendido que la puerta sólo se abría para grupos de siete y él
sólo era uno. ¿Cómo iba a hacer para entrar?

Yes, yes. That door only opens from the inside for
groups of seven but from the outside I, and any hood, can open it with a credit
card. You can´t imagine what a blooming credit card can open. Come on, you
blasted boy, enter if you will, you´ve little idea how sick I am of waiting for

puerta se abre desde dentro para grupos de siete, pero desde fuera, yo y
cualquier chorizo la podemos abrir con una tarjeta de crédito. No veas lo que

Look, bloody boy, if you like, you can wait outside
for the new pupils to arrive and sneak in among them. But they always arrive
late and in a sad condition. Right now they are making ready to celebrate New School Year´s
Eve and not precisely with fruit juice.

cuelas con ellos. Pero esos siempre llegan tarde y mal. Ahora mismo están
preparándose para tomar las uvas del comienzo del nuevo curso escolar y no precisamente en
grano.
Once inside, Arley thought the place was deserted
until he heard the pathetic howl of a soul in torment. It made him jump and turn
to glance at a corner and there he saw a scene worthy of Dante’s Inferno.
Una vez
dentro, Arley pensó que el lugar estaba desierto, hasta que el patético aullido
de un alma en pena le hizo pegar un bote y mirar hacia una esquina. Allí le
aguardaba una escena dantesca.

Indeed, the devil has decided to keep me for his own,
although I can´t understand why, since there is nothing more useless than a
lazy servant. He hasn´t let the rest go. He has literally bounced them out of
here. But Alpin had made a deal with me, which is the same as making one with
the devil. He is going to remain here in my place.
Efectivamente, el demonio decidió quedarse conmigo de
siervo, aunque no sé
por qué, pues nada hay más inútil que un criado vago. No ha soltado a los demás. Les ha botado literalmente. Pero Alpin había hecho un trato
conmigo, que es igual que hacerlo con el demonio. Va a quedarse en mi lugar.

It’s all my fault for only telling you children the
pretty myths. Alpin is used to being sent out of every place he goes to once he
starts eating all the food there is there, so he thought it would be the same
here. He believed that when he finished eating all the food in hell they would kick
him out and he would have fooled the devil. I had never told him the story of
Tantalus, who was a cannibal and because of that was condemned to suffer hunger
and thirst for all eternity, stuck in waters that retreated whenever he bent
down to drink them and unable to reach the delicious, aromatic fruit of a tree
that waved its branches above him and pulled them away when he tried to pluck a
piece. As soon as Moll Avery began to complain that the food in her cupboard
was disappearing, the devil popped up and imprisoned Alpin in that pool.
La culpa es
mía por contar sólo los mitos bonitos. Alpin está tan acostumbrado a que le
echen de todas partes por comerse toda la comida que hay en cada lugar que se
pensó que aquí pasaría lo mismo. Creía que en cuanto acabase con la comida del
infierno le pondrían de patitas en la calle y se reiría del demonio. Yo nunca
le conté el mito de Tántalo, que por caníbal acabó condenado a sufrir hambre y
sed eterna, metido en un estanque cuyas aguas se retiraban cuando se agachaba a
beber y bajo un árbol cuya deliciosa y aromatica fruta se apartada cuando
intentaba cogerla. En cuanto la Mariálvara esa se ha quejado de que Alpin
estaba vaciando la despensa ha venido el demonio y le ha aprisionado en esa
charca.

it. Where is the devil?
I want to have a word with him. I´ll get you out of here. People can
come to an understanding if they speak and listen to each other.
Pues en cualquier caso, no es

And suddenly, Tansy Mandrakecot changed the way he
looked...
