Since he had time to do this, Arley decided to humor the
gluttonous Abundant Cestodes and stopped at the bakery that was the home of the
deservedly famous scrumptious cake. After all, he had something to celebrate.
He was now in possession of one more magic pencil and was about to receive yet
another if Tansy Mandrakecot kept his word, for they had agreed that Arley
could have the two pencils provided he deprive the Blue Men of the one they had
swiped from Tansy.
Michael’s birthday cake had given the students at the
infernal school a taste of heaven, but not as substantial a taste as they
would have liked to have had. So instead of buying a scrumptious cake for
fourteen, Arley bought fourteen scrumptious cakes for forty, quite sure that
those eaters would make good account of them. After all, Alpin and Cestodes
were among them. In fact, he didn´t take more because that was all he could
carry.
The master baker who had invented scrumptious cake was a sugar fairy named Mary Sweet. She spent twenty out of twenty four hours asleep
dreaming up delirious delicacies. She declined to accompany Arley to hell,
alledging that she could not leave her meringue bed for long, much as they
might appreciate her work in the basements of Salamanca. But she made Arley a gift of a box of chocolates
with exquisite stuffings for having been such a good client and for giving her
establishment such good publicity.
The bakery had a little terrace where one
could order smoothies and slushies and ice cream to wash down the cakes and
cookies with. When he walked out, Arley noticed there were three men sitting at
one of the tables, which was covered with rolls of parchment instead of sweets.
One of the three men was an acquaintance of Arley´s and when he saw the fairy
child he waved to him, asking him to come to the table.
Omar
I want to invite you to fruit juice and cookies.
Quiero
invitarte a zumo de frutas y galletas.
Arley accepted and sat with them, not wishing to be
discourteous, and offered the men chocolates from the box he had been given,
which they were pleased to taste. The waitress arrived with their order and the
two men drew all the papers there were on it off the table. Up close now, Arley
saw that these were maps of the firmament.
Arley
Omar
Did you come out the same way you went in?
¿Saliste por
donde entraste?
Arley
Yes. But unfortunately I have to return to the school
because my companions are being held prisoners in there.
Omar
Well, make sure once more that you come out the same
way you entered.
Pues
One of the other two men also had something to say. It
turned out he had studied at the devil’s school.
Uno de los otros
dos hombres también tenía algo que decir. Resultó que él había estudiado en la
escuela del diablo.
Lord Henry / Don Enrique
Haven´t you seen a shadow that moves by itself there?
You haven´t noticed? Well, should you see it, say hi to it from me and tell it
I´m sorry I wasn´t able to get it out of there. I can´t return there for any
reason whatsoever.
¿No habrás
¿No te has fijado?
Arley
Who shall I
say says hi?
¿Quién digo
que dice hola?
Lord Henry / Don Enrique
Oh, just say its onetime owner says hi.
The Querent / El consultante
Ehem!
¡Ehem!
The third man didn´t say anything because he was there
only to consult the astrologers and he had no interest in anything else.
Arley said goodbye and flew off with his
cakes because he didn't want to risk being late.
hiciese tarde.
