Preconditions / Cuestiones previas

Inside the Cave of Salamanca, Tanacetum Mandrakecot began to state what he would have in exchange for the magic pencil Arley and Alpin were after. As he spoke, a small but unquiet shadow that belonged to none of those present made its shy but sly appearance and slipped from one side to the other of the cave. 

En el interior de la cueva, Tanaceto Camamandrágoras empezó a exigir  lo que esperaba recibir a cambio del lápiz mágico que buscaban Alpin y Arley. Mientras hablaba, una menuda pero inquieta sombra que no pertenecía a ninguno de los presentes hizo su tímida y a la vez ladina aparición, deslizandose de un lado a otro de la cueva.

So that I will give you my pencil, you must first bring me one like it that was stolen from me by the Blue Men of Minch.

Para que yo os de mi lápiz, primero tendréis que traerme uno igual que me robaron los hombres azules de Minch.

I don´t understand. You say that you will give me your pencil if Arley brings you another one that is in the power of the Blue Men of Minch. But what sense does that make? If Arley gets hold of that pencil, I will want to keep it too.

 No entiendo. Tú dices que para que tú me des tu lápiz, primero Arley tiene que conseguirte otro que está en poder de los hombres azules de Minch. ¿Pero qué sentido tiene eso? Si Arley consiguiese ese lápiz yo querría quedármelo también.

 Why would Arley go all the way to Scotland to confront a gang of sea monsters - don´t think we are so ignorant we ignore who those guys are and how they go about their business – to bring here a pencil and confront you, who are not just any milksop either and might break your word and try to keep both pencils? Either you are a fool or your intentions are quite questionable.

¿Por qué iba a irse Arley hasta Escocia a vérselas con unas fieras marinas, que no creas tú que somos tan tontos que no sabemos quiénes son esos mindungis y cómo se las gastan,   para traer aquí un lápiz y vérselas contigo, que tampoco eres manco, y a lo mejor cambias de parecer e intentas quedarte con los dos? O eres tonto o tienes muy malas intenciones.

I already said I wasn´t a bigger fool than anyone else here. Granted I am rather lazy. But what is really happening here is that I am no occultist, nor do I wish to be. I´m an artist. I came here because I had heard that this was originally an art school founded by Hercules.

Ya he dicho que no soy más tonto que cualquier otro. De acuerdo que soy algo vago. Pero lo que realmente pasa es que tampoco soy ocultista, ni lo quiero ser. Soy artista. Yo vine aquí porque tenía entendido que esto originalmente era una escuela de arte fundada por Hércules.

Hercules? Mr. Muscles Between the Ears? What can someone with muscle dysmorphia know about Art? Maybe he posed for some sculptor, but that is probably it.

¿Hércules? ¿El musculitos? ¿Qué puede tener que ver un vigoréxico con el arte? A lo mejor posó para algún escultor, eso como mucho.

To learn what Hercules knew about Art, I came all the way here. They told me he had left a talking statue in this cave that gave art classes to anyone who cared to listen. I came to see if there was anything worth hearing.

Para saber lo que sabía Hércules me vine hasta aquí. Me habían dicho que dejó aquí una estatua parlante que daba clases de las siete artes a cualquiera que quisiera escucharla, y como nadie podía decirme lo que tenía que decir, me vine aquí por si descubría algo que mereciese la pena oír.

Oh, yes, indeed. That kid is leaving because he will return. I´m a good judge of character and that kid won´t leave his friends trapped in here. They will be my hostages. Besides, what does all this have to do with you? So long as I stay. I’m the one that’s in your class. You have about a month, whatever your name is, kid. You need to be back before September Eve if you want this to work out.

Arley isn´t going anywhere alone! I don´t care if he´s more than seven. The child mustn´t go face sea monsters on his own!

Standing by the door and with her back to it was the demoness Moll Avery, only being authorized to open the door from the inside. Behind her, the shadow was doing its best to take the shape of the door, that no one might notice it was there. 

 De pie junto a la puerta y de espaldas a ella se hallaba la demonesa Mariálvara, el único ser autorizado para abrir la puera desde dentro. Contra la puerta, la sombra intentaba tomar la forma de ésta, para que nadie se fijase en que estaba allí.

 As soon as the demoness opened the door, Arley flew off like a bat out of hell. He was so quick that the poor shadow was blown to a side and remained trapped in the cave.

En cuanto abrió la puerta la demonesa, Arley salió disparado a cumplir su misión. Fue tan rápido que la pobre sombra cayó hacia un lado, quedando encerrada dentro de la cueva. 



In a question of no time, Arley was in a field in the Hebrides among machair flowers, trying to persuade a giant yellow bumblebee to rent him a dinghy, so he could row to the Shiant Islands, which are in the heart of the Minch.

En cuestión de nada, Arley estaba en un prado de las Hébridas, entre flores machair, intendando convencer a una abeja amarilla gigante que le alquilase un botecito para ir a las Islas Shiant, que están en el corazón del Minch.

Arley promised not to frighten the ewes or their lambs, not to mess with the birds even if they were obnoxious bonxies, to refrain from provoking the basking sharks and from feeding the black rats. He wasn´t going to leave any food or garbage about because he meant to take none with him, so that would be easy to do. Also easy would be not to cause a conmotion falling off the basalt cliffs, because, of course, he had wings and could fly. Last but not least, he had to promise not to raise a storn, and he explained that he was not a weather spirit and didn´t have much of an idea how that was done anyway.   

Arley prometio que no asustaría a las corderas y sus corderitos, que no se metería con los pájaros, ni siquiera con los conflictivos bonxies, que bajo ningún concepto retaría a los tiburones peregrinos e incluso que no daría nada de comer a las ratas negras, ni dejaría comida o basura en las inmediaciones. Esto último sería fácil de cumplir porque no pensaba llevar ninguna consigo. También sería fácil no montar un escándalo cayéndose de los acantilados de basalto, ya que él podía volar. Por último, tuvo que prometer que no provocaría una tormenta, y explicó que él no era un hada de las nubes y no tenía muy claro como se hacía eso de todos modos.

Shamus Yellowbee - that was the giant bee's name - told him that aside from paying rent, he would have to leave a deposit in case the Blue Men decided to drown him and sink the dinghy and he would therefore obviously be unable to return it.          

Jaime Abejamarilla, pues ese era el nombre de la abeja propietaria del bote, le dijo que además de pagar el alquiler por adelantado, también tendría que dejar una fianza por si los hombres azules decidiesen ahogarle y hundir el barquito, en cuyo caso estaba clarísimo que no podría devolverlo.  


To all this and a bit more Arley agreed without arguing. So he got his dinghy.


A todo esto y más accedio Arley sin protestar. Así que consiguió su bote.
