Martin Goes to The Hebrides / Martin se va a las Hébridas

It looks like we are going to be stuck on the wrong side of a door to hell for at least a month. So since we're grounded in a school, infernal to boot, and despite this being August, we´ve decided to get on with our work and learn more English. Moll Avery has let us have a computer and we´ve done some research on the area Arley is visiting. We´ve  prepared a short text about it for you to read with some questions to answer. 

Parece que nos vamos a quedar atrapadas en el lado equivocado de una puerta al infierno por lo menos un mes. Así que como estamos en una escuela, que encima es infernal, y a pesar de que es agosto, hemos decidido seguir con nuestro trabajo y aprender más inglés. Mariálvara nos ha dejado un ordenador y hemos investigado sobre la zona que está visitando Arley. Hemos preparado un texto para leer y unas preguntas sobre el mismo.

Martin Goes to the Hebrides / Martín se va a las Hébridas.
   
I – Read the text:

Martin's hobbies are walking, gardening and bird watching, so it isn't surprising that he decided to go on holiday to the Hebrides. He has been having a great time this summer touring this area. He arrived in time to see the machair flowers in bloom. These are many different kinds of wild flowers, including orchids, that blossom splendidly thanks to seaweed and shellfish that have been ground down, washed ashore and blown inland. This mixture, called machair, makes the land very fertile, and thanks to it, fields in the Hebrides are splendid to behold for a few weeks in summer.

Los pasatiempos de Martín son caminar, la jardineria y la ornitología así que no es de sorprender que se haya ido de vacaciones a las Hébridas. Se lo ha estado pasando pipa en este lugar. Llegó a tiempo de ver las flores de machair en plena floración. Estas son distintas variedades de flores silvestres, incluyendo orquideas, que florecen espectacularmente gracias a algas y crustáceos reducidos a polvo que ha sido arrastrado hasta la orilla del mar por las corrientes y que el viento esparce por los campos. Esta mezcla, llamada machair, hace qe la tierra sea muy fértil y gracias a esto los prados de las Hébridas lucen espléndidos durante unas cuantas semanas en el verano.   

Martin got to see a lot of birds too. Razorbills, shags, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes  are only a few feathered friends he has seen. New to him were the bonxies, great skuas that are the winged pirates of the seas. They frighten and harass other birds to steal their food and even make a meal of smaller birds. And they are not at all daunted by humans. 

Martin también ha conseguido estudiar a un montón de pájaros. Alcas tordas, corvos marínos, pájaros arao, fulmares boreales y gaviotas tridáctilas son sólo algunos amigos aladas que ha visto. Nuevos para él  eran los bonxies, enormes skuas que son los piratas alados de los mares. Asustan y acosan a otros pájaros para quitarles la comida y hasta se zampan a algún que otro pájaro pequeño. Y no les dan miedo los humanos.   

 

Before he leaves for home, he wants to spend three days in one of the Shiant Islands, which are in the heart of the Minch, a strait in north - west Scotland.  He will take a dinghy to get there. The ride will cost him about five hundred pounds, but he thinks it will be money very well spent because he expects to see wonders when he gets there. He hopes he won´t have any trouble with the basking sharks or the Blue Men of the Minch on his way there. 

Antes de volver a casa, Martin quiere pasar tres días en una de las islas Shiant, que están en el corazón del Minch, un estrecho que hay en el noroeste de Escocia. Llegará hasta allí en un botecito. El viaje le va a costar cosa de quinientas libras, pero el piensa que el dinero va a estar muy bien empleado porque espera ver maravillas cuando llegue hasta allí.  

Martin hopes he won´t have any trouble with the basking sharks or the Blue Men of the Minch on his way there. The first are the second biggest fish in the world and used to be fished for liver oil but are now a protected species. As for the second, they are legendary creatures that haunt the deep and come out during storms to recruit new members for their tribe. Martin is fond of the sea, but would rather not be drowned in a tempest, so he is quite happy that the weather forecast says it will be fine all three days of his stay at the island he is visiting.

Martín espera no tener problemas con los tiburones peregrinos, ni con los hombres azules de Minch. Los primeros son el segundo pez más grande del mundo y los pescaban para obtener aceite de hígado, pero ahora son especie protegida. En cuanto a los segundos, se trata de unos seres mitológicos que habitan en lo más profundo del estrecho y salen durante las tormentas a reclutar nuevos miembros para su tribu. A Martín le encanta el mar, pero preferiría no ahogarse durante una tempestad, así que se alegra de que el parte meteorológico anuncie que va a hacer buen tiempo durante los tres días que piensa permanecer en la isla que va a visitar.   

When he gets to the island, a shepherd, who is the only person who lives on it, will give him a key to a stone cottage where he will sleep during his stay. He won´t have to pay for the use of this house, which is more of a shelter than a home. It doesn´t have a toilet or running water and there is no electricity on the island. 

 Cuando llegue a la isla, un pastor, que es la única persona que vive allí, va a darle la llave de una casita de piedra en la que podrá dormir durante su estancia. No va a tener que pagar un céntimo por hospedarse en la casita, que es más un refugio que un hogar. Pero no tiene baño ni agua corriente y no hay electricidad en la isla. 

However, he can get drinking water from a well a little ways from the house. He will have to bring food for three days with him, but must be very careful where and how he keeps it because there are black rats on the island that eat up anything they find. He has been told not to bury or burn his garbage, but to bring it back with him when he leaves the island. 

Sin embargo, podrá obtener agua potable de un pozo que está relativamente cerca de la casa. Tendrá que llevar con él comida para los tres días, pero debe tener mucho cuidado dónde y cómo la guarda, pues hay ratas negras en la isla que están dispuestas a comérsela toda. Le han dicho que no debe enterrar ni quemar su basura. Tendrá que llevársela con él cuando se vaya de la isla.  

Why would he want to stay at a place like this? Because his favorite bird is the Atlantic puffin and there is a colony of these birds on the island. They won´t be there for long. In a few days it will be mid-August and they will be leaving for the Bay of Biscay.

 ¿Por qué iba a querer quedarse en un sitio así?Porque su pájaro favorito es el frailecillo común y hay una colonia de estos pájaros en la isla. No van a permanecer allí mucho tiempo. Dentro de unos días será mediados de agosto y partirán para el golfo de Vizcaya.
