Nauta

It´s almost winter and the sun is sleeping a lot longer than it usually does. A lot of animals I´m acquainted with are hibernating and my wife and I are tempted to do so too. But, just as we used to do when we were alive, we get up with the sun and we retire with the sun.


Es casi invierno y el sol duerme mucho más de lo habitual. Un montón de animales de cuya amistad me honro están hibernando y mi esposa y yo sentimos la tentación de hibernar también. Pero, al igual que hacíamos cuando estábamos vivos, nos despertamos con el sol y nos acostamos con él.


We sleep a lot more in late autumn and early winter than we do the rest of the year. But we don´t sleep only because it´s cold and dark. We sleep because Hypnos and his sons have to do their job and - you guessed it - their job is to make us sleep...and dream.

Dormimos mucho más a finales del otoño y al principio del invierno que durante el resto del año. Pero no dormimos sólo porque está oscuro y hace frío. Dormimos porque Hipnos y sus hijos tienen que hacer su trabajo y, lo adivinasteis, su trabajo es hacernos dormir...y soñar.


In the picture, Hypnos - we Romans call him Somnus - is sleeping in his dark cave, where there is never much light. That´s all he ever really does. His beard is very long because he never shaves it. In it, there wander, twining, a lot of dreams that his three sons create for him. These three are called the Oneiroi. They are Morpheus, Icelos Phobetor and Phantasos.


En el dibujo, Hipnos (los romanos le llamamos Somno) está durmiendo en su oscura cueva, donde nunca entra mucha luz. En realidad, dormir es lo único que realmente hace. Su barba es larguísima porque como nunca se despierta no se la afeita por las mañanas. Por ella vagan enredándose los sueños que sus tres hijos crean para él. A estos tres se les llama los Oniros. Son Morfeo, Icelo y Fantaso.



Morpheus makes us dream with people. He ties on different masks so we will think he is this or that person, but what we see in our dreams is only an ilusion. It cannot be denied that in the arms of Morpheus we can sometimes find comfort and forget our worries and our pain. But, I repeat, this is just an illusion. He can´t do more than that for us.

Morfeo nos hace soñar con personas. Se ata distintas caretas para que pensemos que es ésta o aquella persona, pero lo que vemos en nuestros sueños no es más que una ilusión. No se puede negar que a veces, en brazos de Morfeo hallamos consuelo y olvidamos nuestras penas y nuestro dolor. Pero, repito, es sólo una ilusión. No puede hacer más que eso por nosotros.

Icelos makes us dream of the sea. Why the sea? Partly because it is very important to people who live on islands and are surrounded by it like the Greeks, but mostly because the sea is like the subconscious mind - vast, unknown and uncontrolable. He is also called Phobetor, which means "frightening" because he can give us the worst nightmares.

Icelo nos hace soñar con el mar. ¿Por qué el mar? En parte porque es muy importante para las personas que viven en islas rodeadas por él, como los griegos, pero fundamentalmente porque el mar es como el subconsciente, vasto, desconocido e incontrolable. También se le llama Fobetor, que significa "miedoso" pues nos puede dar las peores pesadillas.

The third brother, Phantasos gives us dreams of animals and /or of inanimate objects. He has wings not only because he can take the shape of a bird but also because he can fly very quickly and very far beyond what we think we know.


El tercer hermano, Fantasos, nos hace soñar con animales y/o objetos inanimados. Tiene alas no sólo porque puede tomar la forma de un pájaro sino también porque es muy rápido y puede volar muy lejos, mucho más allá de lo que creemos conocer.

The names of these gods are similar to a lot of words in European languages. Hypnos is related to the words hypnosis, hypnotize and hypnotic. Something that is oneiric is something that has to do with dreams. The drug morphine takes its name from Morpheus because it makes us sleep, rest and forget even if only for a while. Phantasos inspired the words fantasy and fantastic. Phobetor is similar to phobia and phobic. And insomnia is linked to Somnus, although he is no insomniac.

Los nombres de estos dioses son semejantes a un montón de palabras de los idiomas europeos. Hipnos está relacionado con las palabras hipnosis, hipnotizar e hipnótico/a. Algo onírico es algo relacionado con los sueños. La droga morfina toma su nombre de Morfeo porque nos hace dormir, descansar y olvidar aunque sólo por un rato. Fantaso inspiró las palabras fantasía y fantástico. Fobetor se asemeja a fobia y fóbico/a. E insomnio está vinculado a Somno, aunque este no es ningún insomne.

Hypnos´ mother was the goddess Nyx or Nox, the goddess of the night. Do you remember her? She is one of the Protogonoi, the very first gods. She´s in a picture in my Mini Mythology I. She´s the one with the dark cloak.

La madre de Hipnos es la diosa Nix o Nox, la diosa de la noche. ¿La recordáis? Es una de los Protogonoi, los primeros dioses. Está en un dibujo en mi Mini Mitología I. Es la de la capa oscura.
