The Listeners / Los Oyentes

Here's a  creepy poem by Walter de la Mare and its translation to the the Spanish below. The poem rhymes in English, the translation doesn't, but rhyme is not what's most important here. The atmosphere is.

He aquí un poema inquietante por Walter de la Mare, con su traducción al español debajo. El poema rima, la traducción, no. Pero la rima no es lo más importante aquí. La atmosfera es lo que cuenta. 

The Listeners

“Is there anybody there?” asked the Traveller,    

Knocking on the moonlit door; 

And his horse in the silence champed the grasses

Of the forest’s ferny floor:

And a bird flew out of the turret,

Above the traveller’s head:

And he smote upon the door again a second time;

“Is there anybody there?” he said.

But no one descended to the Traveller;

No head from the leaf-fringed sill

Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes,

Where he stood perplexed and still.

But only a host of phantom listeners

That dwelt in the lone house then

Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight

To that voice from the world of men:

Stood thronging the faint moonbeans on the dark stair

That goes down to the empty hall,

Harkening in an air stirred and shaken

By the lonely Traveller’s call.

And he felt in his heart their strangeness,

Their stillness answering his cry,

While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf,

‘Neath the starred and leafy sky;

For he suddenly smote on the door, even

Louder, and lifted his head:-

“Tell them I came, and no one answered,

“That I kept my word,” he said.

Never the least stir made the listeners ,

Though every word he spake

Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house

From the one man left awake:

Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup,

And the sound of iron on stone,

And how the silence surged softly backward,

When the plunging hoofs were gone.

Los Oyentes

“¿Hay alguien ahí?” preguntó el viajero,

Llamando a la puerta iluminada por la luna,

Y su caballo mordisqueó en el silencio

Las hierbas del helechoso suelo del bosque.

Y un pájaro salió de una torreta, volando

Por encima de la cabeza del viajero,

Que golpeó la puerta una segunda vez y

“¿Hay alguien ahí?” preguntó.

Pero nadie descendió para atender al viajero,

Y por el alfeizar de la ventana, enmarcada por hiedra,

Ninguna cabeza asomó  y se fijó en sus ojos grises,

Ahí donde esperaba de pie, quieto y perplejo.

Solo una hueste de fantasmales oyentes,

Que entonces habitaban aquella casa aislada,

Escuchaban en el silencio de la luz de la luna

Esa voz, procedente del mundo de los hombres.

Allí estaban, abarrotando los tenues rayos de luna

Que llegaban a la oscura escalera que bajaba a l vestíbulo vacío,

Atentos en el aire sacudido y agitado

Por la llamada del solitario Viajero,

Y, mientras su caballo se movía, recortando el oscuro césped

Bajo un cielo cubierto de estrellas y hojas,

 Él sintió en su corazón la extrañeza y la quietud

Con que contestaban su grito, 

Porque de pronto golpeó la puerta con más fuerza,

Y alzó la cabeza y dijo,

“Decidles que vine, y que nadie me recibió.

¡Qué he cumplido mi palabra!”

Ni el menor ruido hicieron los oyentes,

Aunque cada palabra que dijo el viajero retumbó,

Haciendo eco por la penumbra de la silenciosa casa,

Cuando las pronunció el único hombre que seguía despierto.

Sí, oyeron su pie en el estribo,

Y el sonido de hierro sobre piedra,

Y cómo el silencio surgía suavemente hacia atrás

Cuando los ruidosos cascos se alejaron.

9. How can the Traveller see in the dark? / ¿Cómo puede ver el Viajero en la oscuridad?

10. Did clouds cover the sky? / ¿Había nubes cubriendo el cielo?

12. Alliteration is a figure of speech. It occurs when the initial letter of several succesive words is the same. Find an example of alliteration in the English text. La aliteración es la sucesión de sonidos semejantes en palabras que van una detrás de la otra. Ocurre, por ejemplo, cuando la letra inicial de palabras que van una detrás de la otra es la misma.  Encuentra un ejemplo en el texto inglés.
