Strike 1: Oberon doesn´t show / Huelga 1: Oberón no da la cara

Puck

How now, spirit? Whither wander you?

¿Qué tal, espíritu? ¿Por dónde vagas?

Glorvina

Robin Goodfellow! Hail and well met!

¡Roberto Buencompañero! ¡Hola y bien hallado!

Puck

Not so good.

No demasiado bien.

Glorvina

¿But you´re still on strike? That´s not possible. Oberon can´t do a thing without you.

¿Pero aún estás de huelga? No es posible. Oberón no puede hacer nada sin ti.

Puck

Oberon won´t show. Nobody knows where he is.

Oberón no da la cara. Nadie sabe dónde está.

Glorvina

He must have fallen into a hole and now he doesn´t know how to get out.

Puck

More likely he´s abroad hiring a genie who has lost his lamp or someone like that to take my place.

Mungo Binky

There I can help you, Goodfellow. If Oberon hires a foreigner illegally, I´ll kick him out of the country.

Glorvina

¿Oberon? Mungo, you´re brave.

¿A Oberón? Mungo, eres un valiente.

Mungo Binky

No, woman! The illegal alien!

¡No, mujer! ¡Al ilegal!

Glorvina

Binky, there have to be other ways to solve these problems.

Mungo Binky

Name one.

Nombra una.

Glorvina

Well, to begin with, somebody should find Oberon. I´m sure he must have suffered an accident of some kind. Robin can´t do it. He has to sit in front of Oberon´s favorite oak and be on strike. Make yourself comfortable, Robin. We don´t know how long this will take.

Mungo Binky

Do you know the work I have to do? I can´t play nursemaid to Oberon!

¿Sabes el trabajo que tengo? No puedo hacer de niñera para Oberón.

Glorvina

Of course you can´t! You would have to fill in a form applying for the post first. And you would have to ask yourself for references. Have you worked as a nurse before?

¿Has trabajado como niñera antes?

Mungo Binky

Very funny.

Muy gracioso.

Glorvina

I´ll do it. The first thing I´ll do is ask the moles if they´ve seen him fall through one of their holes. Moles know a lot of things.

Mungo Binky

Yes, go ahead. Laugh at Oberón.

Sí, adelante. Ríete de Oberón.

Glorvina

What I´m going to do is rescue him. If the moles haven´t seen him, I´ll ask Darcy.

Mungo Binky

What you want is to flirt with Darcy.

Glorvina

In truth I have more in common with the moles. I´m leaving. Time flies. I want to solve this problem before the eve of May.

Me voy.

Mungo Binky

¡Hey! I hadn´t thought about that.

¡Anda! No había pensado en eso.

Glorvina

Of course. We fairies have a huge party one May Eve. What would people say if Oberon didn´t show at the party and then was found by the press at the bottom of a hole? ¡And to top it all, Puck still on strike!

¡Pues claro!

Nauta

April is the month of Venus Aphrodite, goddess of beauty and love. Venus came out of the ocean with the sea foam, that was how she was born. Her birds are sparrows and doves and her flowers are roses.

Venus had many lovers but her favorite was probably Adonis. He was very handsome, and his name comes from a Semitic word that means "lord." But because he was so handsome, even today, when we want to say a young man is gorgeous we say he is an "Adonis." Venus loved Adonis so much that Mars, the god of war, was jealous and sent a wild boar to kill him. Adonis loved to hunt and he couldn´t resist trying to capture the boar.

Venus heard Adonis shout when the boar wounded him mortally. She run to him, pushing her way through bushes full of thorns. Her blood and her tears turned into roses, and that is how the first roses were born. When she reached Adonis, there was nothing she could do but watch him die in her arms. The blood of Adonis fell on some white flowers and turned them into red anemones. Anemones bloom in the spring, but they don´t last long, like Adonis, who died very young.

The Tall Tale of the Littlewell Whale / La Historia Inverosimil de la Ballena de Pozuelo

Jennifer and Aurelius of 2C have rescued from oblivion a story about a whale that terrorized their town, Littlewell.

How could a whale get into the Lagoon of the Meadow, a pretty pond next to Littlewell in La Mancha, that sometimes dries up for lack of rain?

Jennifer and Aurelius are going to tell you in their own words the scientific explanation of this incident.

We of this blog believe there are many more theories that explain it. Anyone acquainted with alternative theories is invited to share them with us. A present we are publishing a second, alternative explanation, the stork theory.

I - The Scientific Theory / La Teoría Científica

In Littlewell, many years ago, people used to tell a story about how in their lagoon, the Lagoon of the Meadow, there was a whale.

We are going to tell you how this idea developed and reached different parts of the province as a tall tale, so we can laugh for a few minutes.

This story began hundreds of years ago, since ignorance was rife in those years in all the villages of the province and people lacked the knowledge most of us count with nowadays.

Because of this ignorance, it was easy to think that a whale could be found in a lagoon that dries up in the summer.

This story began because a man who was returning from work in the fields passed by the lagoon and saw a strangely shaped object in the water that had never been there before.

When the man saw the object, he ran off to town and told the whole town about what he had seen and between them all they came to the conclusión that it had to be a whale.

After the news had spread all over town, the local people agreed to gather together on a certain day, armed with rakes and spades and other tools used to plow the land and go get the whale.

When they got there they realized that it was nothing but a rumor and that the object the man had seen when returning from work wasn´t a whale but some packsaddles of the kind donkeys wore to transport products, tools, etc., that somebody had thrown in the lagoon, thus confusing thw whole town.

Once upon a time there wa a pretty big baby. Big even for a baby whale.
Now, a stork had to carry the baby all the way from Paris to Baja California, Sur, Mexico, where his proud parents waited anxiously for her arrival.

The baby whale proved to be so heavy that she was just too much for the stork, who dropped it...right in the middle of the lagoon of Pozuelo and flew off towards home.

This is where the stork was going to deliver the baby.

This is where she dropped it:

Aquí es donde la dejó caer.

A while later, a stubborn and obstinate kid began to play near the lagoon, heedless of his mother´s warnings to keep away from the water.

"Don´t go into the water! You don´t know how to swim!"

The kid ignored his mother and waded into the lagoon.

"Come to your granddaddy!" called his grandfather, who was just returning from work in the fields.

"Come to your Ma!" insisted the kid´s mother.

The kid finally went to his ma and his granddaddy when the Littlewell whale suddenly rose to the surface and gave the kid the fright of his life by calling the kid "Mama!"

And now you may ask, why didn´t the villagers find the whale when they came to lynch it?

Because while they were preparing themselves for the hunt the stork returned with several coleagues and together they recuperated the baby whale from the water and flew off with it to Mexico, where its mother was anxiousy looking up at the sky wondering why her baby was taking so long to arrive.

These are the storks looking for the baby whale in the water.

This is the baby whale´s mother looking anxiously at the sky.

Now, the moral of this story is clear from the beginning: don´t carry loads that are too heavy for you without help if you want to avoid having an hernia, causing a panic or being the motive for tall tales.

It is also true that moms and grandparents have always told kids there were monsters in places they mustn´t go near.

And coming up as soon as possible, a quiz about Grey Whales and other stuff.

Here´s April / Aquí está Abril

They say April is a cruel month because lilacs are in bloom.

Here are verses about lilac-time in the botanic gardens at Kew, near London, from a poem called "The Barrel Organ," by Mr. Alfred Noyes.

Go down to Kew in lilac-time, in lilac-time, in lilac-time;

Go down to Kew in lilac-time (it isn't far from London!)
And you shall wander hand in hand with love in summer's wonderland;
Go down to Kew in lilac-time (it isn't far from London!)

The cherry-trees are seas of bloom and soft perfume and sweet perfume,
The cherry-trees are seas of bloom (and oh, so near to London!)
And there they say, when dawn is high and all the world's a blaze of sky
The cuckoo, though he's very shy, will sing a song for London.

The nightingale is rather rare and yet they say you'll hear him there
At Kew, at Kew in lilac-time (and oh, so near to London!)
The linnet and the throstle, too, and after dark the long halloo
And golden-eyed tu-whit, tu-whoo of owls that ogle London.

For Noah hardly knew a bird of any kind that isn't heard
At Kew, at Kew in lilac-time (and oh, so near to London!)
And when the rose begins to pout and all the chestnut spires are out
You'll hear the rest without a doubt, all chorusing for London:--

Come down to Kew in lilac-time, in lilac-time, in lilac-time;
Come down to Kew in lilac-time (it isn't far from London!)
And you shall wander hand in hand with love in summer's wonderland;
Come down to Kew in lilac-time (is isn't far from London!)

Sakura , Haiku and Haiga / Sakura, Haiku y Haiga

I got so stressed with the Minced Forest affair that I simply had to find a way to chill out a little.

I remembered Lady Murasaki and I had agreed to have tea together during Cherry Blossom time. Remember Lady Murasaki?

Now I´m in Japan sitting under the cherry trees and munching rice crackers with Lady Murasaki.

The thing to drink is sacred saki, but that´s a wine made from rice and it is highly alcoholic, so I prefer tea. Green tea, naturally.

We´re enjoying the tea ceremony and listening to "Sakura" on a koto.
If you don´t know what a koto is you can see one in the blog of Cala High´s music department, Ocarina 2007.

Ocarina 2007.

"Sakura" means "cherry blossoms". They are the national flower of Japan and "Sakura," a song about cherry blossoms, is the official hymn of Japan.

You can´t see us in the pictures because we´ve made ourselves invisible so no one will bother us.

Everything is so peaceful here right now that I think I will feel like new when I get back home.

Now we are going to read haiku. These are poems composed of up to 17 syllables. They are written in three lines. The second line must create a link between the first and third lines.
Ahora vamos a leer haiku. Haiku are about small details. They frequently capture a moment in time. They usually deal with something beautiful one has noticed. Often, there is a word in them that tells us in what season of the year the poem is happening.

The poet Basho is one of the most important writers of haiku. This is one of his poems:
old pond
a frog jumps
the sound of water
viejo estanque
una rana salta
el sonido del agua

Sometimes haiku are illustrated. They can be illustrated with simple traces, generally in black Chinese ink. But there are also very elaborate, coloured haiku illustrations. Illustrated haiku are called haiga.
These are some lovely haiga we found on the Internet.

they haven´t seen among the stones

en las grietas entre las losas
las malas hierbas crecen felices.
