Invitation to a Spring Fling / Invitación a una fiesta de Primavera

Petronius Arbiter

Flaccus, you can´t go to Trimalchion´s spring fling wearing those clothes.
They won´t let you in.

No te dejarán entrar.

Nauta

Actually, I was thinking of skipping that party. I´m not a big eater like Trimalchion and I´m not a sybarite like you. I´m the austere, stoical kind.

Petronius Arbiter

You´re not skipping anything. You have to assist. All you need is a new look.

You´re still wearing the same clothes you had on when you drowned the day Cleopatra fled with her ships. Why, they´ve turned the colour of aquamarines from being under the water for so long.

Heed my advice, Flaccus. You may be a ghost, but you don´t have to look like one. Get over your trauma about drowning and go see my tailor, Lukinotakis.

Since he´s my tailor, you can be sure he´s the best. I´m the arbiter of elegance. I decide what´s in and what´s out. Nobody is or has ever been or will ever be as elegant as I am.

Nauta

I´m thinking maybe I should ask Trimalchion to contribute to Glorvina´s new project. She´s trying to save a forest.

You have no idea all the stuff that´s been going on in this blog. And it looked like a peaceful blog too.

First, there was a big fuss about this kid Alpin and a bunch of infuriated forest elves.

And then Glorvina had a row with a pig-headed bureaucrat named Mungo Binky. We haven´t even had time to publish posts about it. But we´ll do it as soon as we can.

Petronius Arbiter

Yes, yes. You can ask Trimalchion for anything you like. But go see Lukinotakis. He lives in Nausica´s blog. Here´s his address:

Vale, vale. Puedes pedirle a Trimalquión lo que quieras. Pero vete a ver a Lukinotakis. Vive en el blog de Nausica. Aquí tienes su dirección.

Sancho´s Notes / Los Apuntes de Sancho

Sancho

I´m learning more English than anyone else because I´m practical and always go straight to the bottom of things.

But I had a bit of a problem with the difference between the past simple and the past continuous.

So I took some notes and made sketches of myself learning about all this, the practical way.

This is me, learning about the past continuous:

And this is me, learning about the past continuous and the past simple:

And aside from a bruise, this is what I made of all this:

The Youth of Sigüenza

Are you alright, Sancho?

¿Estás bien, Sancho?

Sancho

Yes, thank you. I´m fine. Hey! You´ve got a red cross on your breast! And you haven´t got legs. Are you Nuño Paez?

Sí, gracias. Estoy bien. ¡Eh!

The Youth of Sigüenza

Oh, I have legs. No, I´m not Nuño. I´m Martin, the Youth of Sigüenza. I´m browsing through this blog because I want to learn English too. Do you know my story?

Oh, sí que tengo piernas. No, no soy Nuño.

Sancho

I would like to hear it.

Me gustaría escucharla.

The Youth of Sigüenza

I loved to read and dream and I would have liked to live peacefully doing both, but in my time, a man had to go to war and fight for the ideas of his community.

So I fought the Moors in Granada. And I was ambushed and killed at the age of twenty six. Now that I´m dead, I have more time to myself. I´m always reading and dreaming. And now, I´m learning English.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Dickens

Charles Dickens

Thank you. I was young and good-looking once too. But I didn´t crash Nauta´s post because I don´t remember having had much to do with Hero and Leander. Did I? I´m busy writing now, but I´ll be back.

Gracias.

Sardines / Sardinas

If you have a sardine, don´t forget to bury it today.

Lourdes of Bach. 2C sends us these photos of the Burial of the Sardine in her town, Littlewell. She looked about for Nuño, but he seems to have left by the time she got there.

Here´s what Lourdes has to say about Carnival in Pozuelo:

This party in my town is celebrated during a whole week:

- We began to party on Friday with a parade of Brazilian ladies. At night, people dressed in the fashion of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
- On Saturday night, there was a dance at the Carnival Palace.
- On Sunday and Monday there were more parades. different groups, such as The Housewives, paraded in the streets. Masked people on their own wandered everywhere about, some playing jokes.
- On Tuesday was the children´s party. There were many children in costume, parading to the Carnival Palace, where they had a party with a circus and sweets. Wednesday in the afternoon we dressed up in mourning to accompany the sardine in the traditional Burial of the Sardine. We ended up at the huge tent which is the Carnival Palace where we ate sardines.
- On Friday there was a Rock parade and at night a concert.
-Saturday was the last day and my town was full of people because this is the great day of the carnival in Pozuelo.

Cupid and Mr. de la Mare / Cupido y el Sr. de la Mare

The Little Old Cupid

´Twas a very small garden;
The paths were of stone,
scattered with leaves,
with moss overgrown.

And a little old Cupid
Stood under a tree
With a small broken bow
He stood aiming at me.

The dog-rose in briars
Hung over the weeds,
The air was afflock
with the floating of seeds;

And a little old Cupid
Stood under a tree,
With a small broken bow
He stood aiming at me.

The dovecote was tumbling,
The fountain dry,
A wind in the orchard
Went whispering by;

And a little old Cupid
Stood under a tree
With a small broken bow
He stood aiming at me.

El Cupido canijo

Era un jardin muy pequeño
con caminos de piedra
cubiertos de hojas,
musgo y hiedra

Y un Cupido canijo
bajo un árbol ví,
Con un arco partido
apuntaba hacia mí.

Sobre hierbas silvestres
zarzas de escaramujo colgaban
y semillas flotantes
el aire atiborraban

Y un Cupido canijo
bajo un árbol ví,
Con su arco partido
apuntaba hacia mí.

El palomar, desmoronado,
La fuente seca estaba,
Y al pasar por el huerto
una brisa susurraba

Y un Cupido canijo
bajo un árbol ví,
Con su arco partido
apuntaba hacia mí.

This poem is by Mr. Walter de la Mare, who, although a dead poet, is a relatively recent author. One of you is going to have to tell us about him and his sensitive world.

In poems, punctuation can be a little erratic because they are more about voices and feelings than about rules. If you find anything odd about the punctuation of the English original or the Spanish translation, you may suggest changes.

If any of you want some points, I want you to tell me the name of a plant that has crept into the garden of the Spanish version and wasn´t there in the original English version. That´s a way to prove you´ve read both. And you must define in Spanish what "escaramujo" is. Yes, I know it´s dog-rose in English. But what kind of plant is it?

I have two little old Cupids with broken bows in my house. So I will put a picture of one up front and I´m putting another down here, as soon as I can.

It´s Fat Tuesday! Es Martes Gordo.
We´re the Glowworms! Somos Las Luciérnagas.

Isabel is the coreographer of our dance!

Michael

A lass named Tess told us Nuño would be out in the streets tonight, celebrating Fat Tuesday.

So we decided to look around and see if we could find him.

First, we went to the friendly town of Archers, where we run into some people in masks. The glowworms approached them.

Glowworms

Has anybody here seen Nuño?

¿Alguien de aquí ha visto a Nuño?

Masks

Are you speaking to us?
Who is who?
The glowworm costume is so cool.
¿How did they mange to shrink so much?

¿Es a nosotras?
¿Quién es quién?
Mola ese disfraz de luciérnaga.
¿Como han conseguido encogerse tanto?

Glowworms

N-u-enye-o?

¿N-u-ñ-o?

Masks

Why do they pronounce ñ so strangely?
Because they are glowworms.
No! Because they are Irish.
You do know English.

¡No! Porque son irlandesas.
Tú sí que sabes inglés.

Glowworms

¿Has anybody here seen Nuño?
Tell us what you know!

¿Ha visto alguien de aquí a Nuño?
Decidnos lo que sepais.

Masks

Why are they looking for that Nuño?
Have we seen him?

¿Por qué buscan a ese Nuño?
¿Le hemos visto?

Glowworms

We need to know where this fellow is
´Cos we found a coin that could be his.

Masks of the Krewe of Sweet-toothed Ladies

They´re good people.
We should help find this Nuño.

Son buena gente.
Deberíamos ayudar a encontrar a ese tal Nuño.

Glowworms

Has anybody here seen Nuño?

¿Alguien de aquí ha visto a Nuño?

Masks of the Krewe of Sweet-toothed Ladies

If that Nuño is a fellow who floats in the air, he went towards Littlewell.

Glowworms

Nuño from Cala High!
Thank you!

¡Nuño de Cala High!
¡Gracias!

Masks

Goodbye! Good luck!

¡Adios! ¡Suerte!
